Excellent, Marty's playing took Megadeth to a whole new level. His phrasing, exotic scales, and down to earth nature kept that band fresh and always pushing boundaries. They haven't been the same without him.
Ellis Gordon, Mustaine actually started improving his soloing after he got Marty in the band. Granted, a major part of it was Mustaine being sober & open to the idea of learning. But, Mustaine adopted more of Friedman’s techniques into his own playing. Since, Mustaine now learns from every new lead player he hires. But, Friedman put Mustaine on the path to improvement.
I remember getting "Dragon's Kiss" on cassette (yeah, I'm old). The album was great but the big takeaway, for me, was Marty's love of using interesting and unusual scales and modes. He got me into African, Arabic and Asian influences and using them in different ways. If nothing else, it's a great learning tool. Another great lesson... as usual. Cheers.

It's hard to tell if the tape was making weird noises or it was Marty making those weird kwirky noises. All respect to Marty. His stuff is hard to figure out what he is doing. Great lesson video!
Before Cacophony, Marty was in a very early 80s band called HAWAII. Check out the phenomenal instrumental called "Rhapsody in Black." You'll hear a lovely segment in there that Marty recycled later on in "Concerto" from the 1st Cacophony album!
I gotta mention Marty's guest spot on Skyharbor's debut album - guest solos on Catharsis and Celestial. Two of my favourite solos by him! Check them out if you haven't, Dave.
Still have both Cacophony "albums" on cassette (and CD of course), as well as both Marty and Jason's debut solo albums on cassette (and again, on CD too lol). Loved both of their playing right from the start. Marty's "Scenes" still gets an occasional listen and, like the licks in this lesson, contains many excellent examples of his playing without the use of distortion. In fact I'd say there's more playing without distortion than with on that album. [Sigh] I just realized... Marty gave us "Wall of Sound" and the best I can do is "Wall of Text" with this verbose comment. Oh well. Great lesson. Cheers!
Okay you got me, Marty is one of my all time favorite players. I have met him and he was a super nice guy and when you mix that in with his style (his own style) it just really resonates with me. I really like the licks you picked out and I can't wait to get home from work to pick up my guitar and try them out. Thank you for the video very good stuff. Also Marty's feel is so different, like his accent notes fall different than most peoples and then his bends that he incorporates are the icing on the cake. Hey, I’m new to your channel, but have you done any videos about either Paul Wardingham or Per Nillson? I’m sure you’re aware of both of these monstrous players and would LOVE to hear you break down their styles a bit. Best I can describe their styles are futuristic sci fi post apocalyptic steampunk cyborg shred lol. Especially Wardingham wow his style just excites me. I’m not super knowledgeable on scales I’ve always just been a kind of get-my-hands dirty kind of player but I know it’s to my detriment after 33 plus years of doing it that way. Anyways take a listen to anything from these guys…for Per I especially love his works with his band Scar Symmetry on their album The Singularity-Phase I and the solos on Neohuman are just other worldly. For Paul Wardingham…sheesh pick anything from him…maybe Earth 2.0 is a great representation of his spacey style shred. Thanks Dave!

Talking of unique guitarists, would you consider doing a video on Ian D'Sa from Canadian punk band Billy Talent? His style is very interesting, combining drop D power chords with simultaneous melodies, sounding like 2 guitars. Songs like River Below and This Suffering are good examples.

On future videos, could you talk about the picking hand? You seem to have a great technique and your tips on that would add greatly (even more) to your videos. Keep on with this great channel!
In classical music they think about scales as in brightness. Major is in the middle and as you sharpen any note it is a brighter scale. This means there are dozen and dozens of scales far more than guitar players know. If you want to hear how incredible they can sound you have to get into classical music. It's all there to be explored and learned. There are also more modes than guitar players know like super Locrian ect..
I practice distorted but no other effects. I find practising clean all the time makes unwanted string noise control harder when distortion is turned back on again.
Love late night lessons. Please do one on Jerry Cantrell. Like myself he says he's not trained or doesn't know what scale or mode that he plays his stuff in. Just what sound good to him. Think he'd be very interesting to do a lesson on. Thanks David. Rock on.

Geez dude your hands look huge. I have big hands but yours look way bigger lol. I agree on the distortion thing but you also need to practice with your effects especially distortion to be able to control it. It's not easy if you don't practice you technique for muting etc to make it sound smooth

The biggest thing I took from Marty's playing was his use of half-step bends because I was too slow to figure out any of his shred.

Marty explained why he holds his pick so strangely: He never palm mutes during solos. That's how he keeps his palm away from the strings!
Great choice of licks! That 2nd lick is something I've played before, and daaaaaaang it always twists my noggin' everytime I try to remember it.

Marty's clinic was 25 years ago. I'm quite surprised they had an interpreter even then. Today you can get along with English anywhere in Finland.
Yep thats right, english is taught in school trough 3rd to 9th grade so everyone speaks english in Finland.
