- Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Vinnie Moore Licks From 1989. I've had numerous requests to feature more of Vinnie's ferocious guitar playing and this lesson features plenty of his classic shred guitar heroics and ideas from back in the day.
The ideas shared in this lesson came from footage of a television appearance in Finland in 1989 and captures Vinnie at his fiery peak - with plenty of finger-twisting shred guitar heroics on display. The ideas in this lesson include a challenging melodic scale sequencing idea, a string-skipped pedal-point phrase, a climbing pedal-point run, a weaving shred-style scale sequence, and much more!

I was always scared of Vinnie's playing, it just doesn't sound as predictive as other players, but rather on the verge of just exploding. His note placement is mind boggling at times, and I appreciate that. I LOVE his work with UFO, he did some really great stuff with them.
"The Maze" album was easily his peak of playing and that unique spin on neoclassical/metal. After that he got way too bluesy and rock.

@@Despond Defying Gravity was released in 2001. Five years after his first bluesy rock album “Out of Nowhere”. That was a brief return to his neoclassical metal roots.
Not that his blues rock stuff is bad. All of his albums are top notch.
Vinnie is my guitar hero. 'The Maze' really shows how diverse he is. His articulation is incredible.
IMO, Vinnie's musical maturity reached its peak in MELTDOWN, something in that album captivated me, the phrasing is almost impeccable, to this day I still listen to it regularly
Friend of mine, Greg Smith, played bass on Meltdown. Great guy and phenomenal player. Also played with Rainbow with Blackmore, Alice Cooper (I believe he helped Vinnie land that gig) Ted Nugent , Wendy O Williams to name a few. One of my fondest moments was getting to jam “Man On The Silver Mountain” with all the guys from that Rainbow era. What a blast. 💥

Vinnie has always been a huge source of inspiration for me and my playing styles. He has always remained in my top 5 since the mid 80's...such a articulate and utterly terrifying guitarist. Thanks David!🤘

Vinnie Moore explained modes in his second video and it made perfect sense.
The guy’s picking and phrasing is next level. When Yngwie plays, it seems like the same thing, baroque neoclassical. But Vinnie has a melodicism to his playing that is more beautiful and less predictable.
Tony MacAlpine is also insanely underrated. I still love to rip out The Taker or the Witch and the Priest.

When Meltdown came out, me and my friends thought the Vinman walked on water🤣 I grabbed the tab book for it and dove in the deep end! You sir are correct, he is an absolute legend in our community! There's a good 3-part Vinnie Moore lesson on the modes up on RUclips. That's is where I first saw him.

The 2nd track, "Let's Go" off of Meltdown, has the most ridiculous solo section. Vinnie Moore will always be my favorite guitarist from that era.

There have been (and are) many shredders that made me go "man, what is that?". But Vinnie was one of the few who made me go "MAN. What IS that!".
Not sure whether he has kept such a low profile by choice or for other reasons, but he is definitely underrated, albeit really loved by guitar players.

Great job Dave, love Vinnie Moore's playing. I know everyone seems to site Mind's Eye as the best album but for me, it's Time Odyssey. The production was leagues ahead and his playing was at it's peak. Would love to see you show some licks from that album. Cheers Dave!
As Time Slips By on Odyssey is absolutely gorgeous and articulate guitar playing. I asked him at a workshop about the solo, that climb at the end is breathtaking.
Time Odyssey was also my jam, to me it is the perfect neoclassical album moving in to perfect his fusion of classical with the jazz modal ideas seen in the first album. The production was better and the melodies outstanding. Just no meh pieces in there, everything had it’s charm and all of the jaw droppers.

Sorry, add to previous comment. Vinnie can merge let’s say C Ionian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian or D Dorian all over an A Aeolian bass line and resolve smoothly back to Am. We know these are all the same notes but the magic happens with all the fingering combinations. Sorry for the rant( my favorite technique) thanks for great post as usual.
I remember when yngwie came out
I think i heard him the first time around 84 with alcatrazz , i remember thinking ok its going to take at least 20 years for someone to play like that at the level or get even close, two years later vinnie came out and not only was he just as good but better in my opinion, more melodic, more tasty and he became my favorite guitar player since then,
Around that time racer x came out and i discovered frank gambale also,
Man these were the good days !!
Most people don’t understand that Vinnie might be the best, most original, and most technical player of the 80’s and 90’s. Most people hear that statement, and scoff. They figure if that were the case then more people would talk about him. I do not have an answer for that, but he is definitely the greatest.

Interesting point about Aeolian mode. Vinnie is very comfortable with most of the modes of the major scale (his 80s instruction opening solo is still mind blowing) and Yngwie is not although I really enjoy them both.
Grew up on the REH videos with all of the fretmasters. Never looked back!

UFO was a great band. I remember listening to them back in the early 70’s when they first came out. Awesome band! Looks like to me you’re doing an awesome job with those licks. I ran across another band I listened to back in the 70’s which was April Wine but somehow the Attitude album I had never heard before & It was a welcomed surprise when iTunes sent it in the suggestion music. Give it a listen to its got some killer riffs! I enjoy watching you play dude & your knowledge you share. 😎
Vinnie was way more melodic than yngwie. Yngwie relied on pure speed to repeat the same licks over again,while Vinnie was more intricate"melodically" AS WELL as having speed
Couldn't agree more. It's too bad that when speaking of Vinnie Yngwie has to be connected, not the Yngwie isn't incredible.
Vinnie Moore was the man back in the 80's. His clean sound, picking, and note choices were outstanding. His sense of melody and surprise turns were just amazing. My only problem with Vinnie was his remarks about how bad he felt and his choices of comments concerning Vicious Rumors-Soldiers of The Night. I'm telling you, Vinnie was on FIRE and the whole band and release are outstanding..easy Up Vinnie -Soldiers is a Classic..

It was kinda inevitable that guys like Vinnie and Paul Gilbert needed to step away from the pure shred style to get away from the Yngwie shadow. Even tho I totally love Vinnie's playing on Soldiers of the Night.

I live in Finland and remember this. If I recall correctly it was a guitar workshop that lasted week end. There was concerst as well as workshops. Also Joe Pass and Arlen Roth were there. One friend of mine attended and said Vinnie was really nice and he practiced a lot. Which is to be seen. 😃

if you haven't noticed he uses a $100 behringer Vamp pro that 20 years old and sound perfectly fine. So stop fussing about gear, it doesn't to help you.
Okay I'm a perfectionist lead guitarist, PICK DIRECTION? sorry to be rude but the tab needs pick direction for the first lick, it seems the first part is economy picked, the alternate picking, followed by how Paul Gilbert descends, please please please put your picking directions on the tabs you give, thanking you v kindly as you give great examples, someone who wants to learn fast without obstickles.
Always thought that Vinnie sounded different than the other shredders of the 80s more a style like a modern day Al Dimeola sounded nothing like all the yngwie style players of the day
