Long’ish but happy story: We don’t have nice thrift shops in my region but I felt a huge urge to go into a large one shortly before Christmas. I looked around and was almost ready to leave when I remembered that I was wanting some older cereal bowls - I don’t enjoy eating from today’s deep bowls - so I checked the housewares section to see if they had older sets of dishes with my preferred style of bowl. They had over a dozen sets of dishes but then - hiding in the back - was a set of four bowls. They’re the identical pattern as my everyday dishes which had belonged to my late mother. I only had one cracked bowl left (which is shaped in my preferred style) and now I have five of them! Those dishes were sold at an old department store called Woolco back in the late 70’s. What are the odds that I’d find those exact bowls on the only day I thrifted in a few years?
My cousin would call that a God Wink. I'm not an overly religious person but sometimes things like this happen and you just have to wonder.... I'd say - thanks mom. I found them! Enjoy your new bowls.
I remember Woolco also. And yes that happens often, something I need or want is there and I have learnt not to pass it up because it appears to take a long time for a second time to show up
When my youngest was 10 or so, he told me “Mom, we have to go to Goodwill. My shoes are getting too small”. He didn’t even know there were other places to buy shoes. Parenting win!
After changing my furniture around, I needed a floor lamp for a tight space. Went over to my local Goodwill and I found the perfect one! I grabbed it quickly and it looks perfect in that space. Side note…While perusing the mug shelves I see the plaid mug you accidentally broke. I always say to myself, “There is Hilary’s mug.”
I actually outfitted my 3 children, myself and sometimes my hubby in order to send the children to private school and hubby to university! It is so much more fun to thrift shop as it is like a scavander hunt!!!! and in my town the ladies clothing is more like boutique clothes! Very unique and elegant....and affordable!
I'm almost 70 yrs old and I 've been a thrift Shopper my entire life! I've always been a good Stewart over all in my life. I believe we are either born with this gift or not. Love thrifting ❤️
I’m from the UK and I so wish we had thrift shops like the ones in the US. We do have lots of charity shops, as we call them, but they are usually quite small and don’t have the range of things I see in your thrift shops. However, I did once get an absolute bargain. I saw a beautiful winter coat on a rail outside a pricey boutique which was having a sale so took it in to ask the price. The lady laughed and said it was actually on a rail from the charity shop next door. It’s a vintage 1950s or 1960s black wool winter coat and I got it for £2 which is around one dollar in the US. I had it cleaned and lengthened a little and I’ve worn it for quite a few years as I absolutely love it. I really enjoy seeing your thrift shop videos. Happy New Year x
Two BEST things I thrifted were pieces of furniture, both off of FB Marketplace. A high end white chair, that was listed @#100, and a PB Comfort Roll Arm, slipcovered sofa that is STILL on their website for almost $2,000. The lady who was selling the white chair ended up GIFTING to me AND she brought it to me. I EXCELLANT condition too. The Pottery Barn sofa, was listed @ $175.00. asd was EXCELLANT condition, as well!
I really enjoy your content! I have been on the hunt for some MCM wooden/ teak candlesticks in that sleek MCM style. I found one in the bins several years ago but never anything else. My last trip to GW I found a set laying down on the shelf, practically hidden! I was so happy, finally!
Great tips for people who are new to thrifting. I use all of them but one. I don't agree with putting something in your cart to "think about it". If you are not that excited about it to the point where you have to think about it, then it's a "No". Plus, you are also taking away someone elses chance to see it who may be shopping the same time that you are, that would be thrilled with it.
One of my favorite thrift store purchases recently was a Italian Leather purse, I just love it, has all the compartments I need, and it looked brand new, I paid $2.99 Also a pair of leather boots in brown, whenever I wear them I get so many compliments I do leave empty handed more then I purchase, but through the years I have built up my wardrobe with thrifted items Love when you have thrifting videos ❤
I’ve thrifted since I was a teenager! When I was a new stay at home mom, it was such a great way to clothe my kids with nicer brands than I could afford to buy new. Now I don’t “need” to thrift but I choose to because I’m supporting charities when I shop, and I get great deals. I found a LetterFolk Tile Mat and 26 bags of color tiles for $35 over the summer. The tiles alone sell for over 400 on their website. Such a fun find!
Everything you said is my story as well! Started thrifting when I was a teenager it continued when I had children. Now when it’s not so necessary it is still my favorite way to shop. So much more interesting than buying stuff at a retail store. Plus I think my house looks much more cozy with unique things that I have picked up along the way in life. Not to mention you can get some wonderful quality things that you might not otherwise buy for your home.
I love thrifting!! 75% of my home is thrifted. Picture frames, quilts, baskets, dishes, decor and clothing. I love that things can be repurposed instead of going into the landfill. 2 or 3 annual neighborhood sales that I go to every year never disappoint. Can't wait to see what you thrifted!
Thanks to your inspiration of thrift shopping, i visited one close by and purchased a beautiful coat for this season and matching 1950s hat. Thanks for sharing your finds. ❤️
My favorite thrift store find: a silver champagne bucket! I saw yours several years ago in a video, and knew I had to have one to put flowers in. I looked whenever I went to antique or thrift stores. It took me awhile, but I finally found one, and I love it!
Love thrifting- great tips! I also put it in the cart to think about it! I’ve had people approach me and say OOH love that and if I decide not to get it I find them and give it to them😊Thrifters unite!😂
Hey Hilary! Just making Sur eyou are away - since you got the new computer, all of your videos are only uploading in 480p. On newer monitors, they look pretty fuzzy.
I absolutely love thrift shopping! The thrill of finding one of kind things and unique pieces is my favorite pastime with my sister. Always love your videos Hilary! ❤
when I was young and single, I shopped at the thrift stores in wealthy areas. Ohhhh the gems I found there !! Now , many, many years later, we shop at Savers just a few miles away. I redid my Spring wardrobe last years at a mere fraction of the cost buying new. Many of the tops I bought had original tags on them. We buy household items, that were very expensive originally. Thrifting is wonderful. It helps the organization, helps us buy inexpensively for high quality items, and we always have a place to donate. I don't know about other thrift stores, but Savers lets you bring things back as long as the tag is still on it and you have your receipt, you will get store credit. Most household things in our last home were either from a thrift store, or free. If you have good taste your home can be beautiful on a tight budget. But even if you aren't on a tight budget, why pay more. And I found that furniture from there was better quality.
I love thrifting! I feel like I rarely make out well with clothing for myself, but recently I did! I found a Michael Kors sweater, a Gap sweater, a cute saying tee for the holidays and some tank tops for layering and some of them were even 50% off- I have been wearing these pieces all the time!
I love thrifting! My husband and I collect older movies on VHS and DVD and we always find good ones at the thrift. Same for books for me. I also love looking for unique and vintage housewares and furniture. It's so fun! I do look for clothes but I get a lot of my closet from Thredup. We don't have any Savers close by but Goodwills seem to be popping up everywhere! The new stores are nice and always packed with merchandise. Looking forward to your next video!
I just returned from donating a trunkful ro my local thrift store. Of course I had to peek inside! I found a blue onion flower bowl that matches my collection of dishes for $2.00. It was a win win!
With books often people are given books they would not read so they be in pristine condition but still a good read, we are all very different in our book choices. My daughter helps manage a charity shop here in the UK and the ethos is very different to the USA. Hope 2023 is good for you and your family.
I'm a thrift shopper as well. I went out yesterday and found this adorable cottage style garden metal gate and I plan on using it for my valentine's cards. I belong to a fb community that loves vintage and every year we exchange cards. Soo far I have 10 coming my way! So I thought this would look great way to display them.
Also, check the carts or Trolleys that come out with recently donated items before they are shelved. You get first pick of clothing and items that way!
Great idea but at the Goodwills in my area they constantly play a message on the PA to NOT take anything out of the cart. We must wait until the item is put on the shelf! One time a lady got her hand slapped by a GW employee for taking something out of the cart. Yikes!!!
I have five growing kids and prefer to thrift their shoes because they grow so quickly. Within 1 week I found 2 pair of leather (suede) chukka boots, one for my son and one ladies pair for my daughter at the same store, $15 for both and they are in like new condition! Then I found my daughter a pair of Sorel leather duck boots for $6! They almost fit me, but at least I could get them for her. I've also recently been collecting frames for a gallery wall and the thrift store has the best, most unique frames at a great price! Another tip is to stash your items in your cart under things while in the fitting room. I've had multiple items that I had intended to purchase taken right out of my cart while trying clothing on. I guess they thought they needed the item more than I did!
I love shopping in that thrift store, actually I saw you there that day. I also shop at the MyUnique thrift store near there, but rarely find anything despite it being huge. I enjoy your videos!
Love your channel and content! GREAT tip to look at the spines! I always overlook them because they are worn but you are right… it’s a great indicator it was a good read. Thank you!
Great video!! I also started to live thriftiness. My husband and I found a great Thrift Store in Maine when we were on vacation. We bought 2 beautiful dark oak stained Windsor chairs from Nichol and Stone Co. for $12 a piece. Also all their children’s clothes are just $1 per item. Affordable thrift stores are getting harder to find but there are still some out there. 😊
I like to buy clothes books and toys for my grandson, it’s nice to be able to be a generous Nanny and help my daughter too! I have always dressed myself and my kids, and never felt that we didn’t look the same as everyone else! Happy thrifting❤️❤️.
Just the other day I went thrifting (we call it op shopping here in New Zealand) with my daughter and 13 year old granddaughter. GD absolutely loved it and now has lots of new styles to play around with. ……daughter already enjoyed the fun of the find and now we have a new convert🌷
YES! Consider Magnolia Silos, Waco Tx. Recently I have found some of their decor items, mugs etc. at surrounding Goodwill at a BARGAIN. A #60 wreath, was only $3.99 at Goodwill.
Great tips as always! Regarding Butcher Box, not trying to discourage anyone, (please support Hilary for her great content in anyway you can!), but if you do sign up, please make sure to check your bill & delivery date frequently! If you might not need the next delivery for some reason, you pretty much have to remind yourself as they DO NOT send you a reminder/option-to-skip notice. And, to my understanding they do not have an app that you can pop into to easily to adjust your frequency & settings. I got my first delivery, but worked through it slowly, and then boom, another box showed up and that’s how I ended up with $300 worth of meat in my freezer. 🤦🏻♀️
We have a few in our area. Currently on the hunt for a dresser/chest with multiple little drawers, like an apothecary cabinet to organize all the stuff needed in a home. Found one on Pinterest that fits my criteria. I'm on the hunt - I check Market place daily. Hillary, you would make a great thrift shop/vintage store proprietor & already have the name "Old World Home"!
I love thrifting. Most of my clothes are thrifted, a lot of workout clothing also. My dishes, decor, craft room organizers and items, even some furniture, etc. better for the pocket book and environment as well as more unique.
My daughter loves to shop thrift stores, and my grandchildren, now grown, have been trained well. She has found several strands of genuine pearls for only a few dollars...I taught her how to test to know real from costume jewelry. Geat buys!
I would say know the store return policy, and take that into account when having a hard time deciding if something is a keep or leave buy. Also get to know the staff, so when you spot something you can ask for a quick discount at the toll. Really examine clothing to make sure all the seems are still together, buttons aren’t missing and so on. Then decide is it worth the effort to ask for a discount and fix yourself or not. I would also recommend trying everything on. Just because it looks good on a hanger doesn’t mean it looks good on you!
The best thing I recently found is a high end, luxury brand resale store. It was so much fun to try on the quality clothing knowing that I could afford the resale price listed.
There are so many thrift stores in our area. I recently got a Calvin Klein cape/coat-camel colored with buttons and a belt for $14.99. Looked it up on line at Macys-they are selling it for $274. Very happy thrifter here
I absolutely love the thrill of the hunt! Recently I found a pair of leather boots that were still on the Nordstrom website for around $100, I found a new with tags beautiful Anthropologie blouse, I also got a big crockery type bowl that I use to put fruit in. I almost always find a book. I hope you got that first book you pulled out in the video (I'm pretty sure it was Delicious! by Ruth Reichl. We read it for our book club and it was so good!) Always love to see what you find at the thrift store.💙
I haven’t thrifted much lately but the most memorable purchase was a green leather purse. It wasn’t designer and the reason I bought it was to repurpose the leather on it for home decor, BUT when I was cutting it I noticed something in the inner pocket and low and behold it was a $100 bill and what looked like an insulin syringe. After the shock I threw away the syringe but happily kept the $100 to do more thrifting. 🤣
Thrifting is good and I do visit thrift stores sometimes. However my husband never fails to remind me that I can afford to shop at proper stores and therefore should leave the items in the thrift stores for more needy people.
Thrift stores are changing, at least in my area. The nice things are sold on the thrift store auction site or other platform, like eBay. Not much here to find that’s not trash really
Loved this video. When I realize I need something I add it to my "Thrift Shopping List" on my phone. Example: extra teaspoons ( I run out of them because of the dishwasher) slotted serving spoon( same reason). That way if I don't get to thrift shop that week I don't forget when I get a chance to go thrifting. I also like to keep a list of pot/pans top sizes so I can get glass lids for my pots. Why replace the pans when I can just buy glass lids!
Our Goodwill is not that good. I find cheaper things on sale at Walmart and sometimes Kohl's on clearance. We have a Salvation Army store and I give to them really nice stuff even furniture but when I go to shop there all they have is junk. I just quit going there. Wish we had thrift stores closer. Our town has more tourist shop traps than what locals need. I love watching you thrift Hilary. Great videos. ❤️
Last week I was able to thrift, on Facebook marketplace, a newer indoor kerosene heater. The gentleman wanted $50, I offered $40 and when we met to pick it up he gave it to me for free!
Great video! I've found many things over the years, but most recent was an Edison Amp, made in the U.S. It's super low tech, but does a wonderful job amplifying my phone or iPod. I have a book recommendation for you. It's Morning Glory, by LaVyrle Spencer. It was written years ago, but I believe you'd enjoy the story. The character development is superb, and Will and Ellie and the kids are such fun. Spencer spins a great tale!
Recently our congregation had opportunity to collect some donations for Ukrainian refugees relocating to our area. Many had nothing to donate so they gave a monetary amount. My family was given the privilege of taking the cash donations and buying items. One thing that was needed was dresses for ladies so my daughter and I went to a small consignment store 40 minutes away and scored 27 designer dresses in pristine condition for $394!!! I couldn't believe it! We never dreamed that we would be able to find what was needed in such a small store
Great tip on the book spines! I once found a Pyrex cornflower baking dish for under $2 that had dusty silk flower arrangement in it along with a pile of dust bunnies. My favorite find is a beautiful bistro scene painting for $30 by an artist who lives in West Africa, and a Waterford snowman that cost 75 cents. What is the brand name of the red dress that you are having tailored? It’s a gorgeous dress!
I once experienced something being removed by someone, while I was in the dressing room. And/or employees restocking things from my basket, while I was in teh dressing room. Now I try to carry a paper sign to let them know I am trying on clothes. Please do NOT put back or remove.
I'm so grateful you have awesome sponsors for your channel. You deserve it!! My favorite thrifting experience is my transferstation (local dump). We have 2 free rooms there. One is small and organized by categories (books, toys, clothing, kitchen, holiday, linens) and the other is a big barn that houses furniture 😀 we have collected most of our home goods over the years just from our dump free room!! Love from Maine
Hi Hillary..I absolutely love thrifting for home, clothes and treasures of any kind for my home. You can find real quality items. Some major stores will donate their clearance items if they don't sell. I've bought many clothes with the original sales tag on it. I don't usually try on clothes until I wash. If they don't fit, I give up a friend or family member. If not, I re-donate! Thanks for great tips I didn't know about.
Long’ish but happy story: We don’t have nice thrift shops in my region but I felt a huge urge to go into a large one shortly before Christmas. That is so cool! I remember Woolco so well. There was one in Toronto I loved. What thrift store did you go to? Was it a good one?
My cousin would call that a God Wink. I'm not an overly religious person but sometimes things like this happen and you just have to wonder.... I'd say - thanks mom. I found them!
Enjoy your new bowls.
I worked at Woolworth, which I’m sure is an affiliate of Woolco, in the early 70s. Congratulations on such an exciting find!
That is so wonderful! God is so good.
I remember Woolco also. And yes that happens often, something I need or want is there and I have learnt not to pass it up because it appears to take a long time for a second time to show up
Have you ever considered doing a video with your mom? I would love to hear about your upbringing, being raised with such a big family (which I love).
When my youngest was 10 or so, he told me “Mom, we have to go to Goodwill. My shoes are getting too small”. He didn’t even know there were other places to buy shoes. Parenting win!

I am in the church choir, so for our Christmas services I wanted a long black skirt. At the thrift store I found a velvet one new with tags for $1!
Wow!!
Score!
I'm almost 70 yrs old and I 've been a thrift Shopper my entire life! I've always been a good Stewart over all in my life. I believe we are either born with this gift or not.
Love thrifting ❤️

What an incredible find!
The pound is generally stronger than the US dollar, so I'd say that was more around 2.50 US. But still an awesome deal of course!
Two BEST things I thrifted were pieces of furniture, both off of FB Marketplace. A couple years ago I found a beautiful Italian leather purse new with tags for about 10$$!!
@OldWorldHome393What does your comment mean? Is this you or someone posing as you. I’m just confused.
I love your hair pulled up it looks so elegant on you.

@@debbieholt8261 I guess it depends on the Thrift Store. It’s ok in my shop. The staff say, “Help yourself… I won’t have to shelve it!” 😂
Can anyone tell me why I love Hilarys videos so much? I found her a few months ago and I haven’t watched any other RUclips channel since!
I have five growing kids and prefer to thrift their shoes because they grow so quickly. I can't wait to see the goodies that you found. I also am a lover of baskets. so many neat items in the video.
I love shopping in that thrift store, actually I saw you there that day. I also shop at the MyUnique thrift store near there, but rarely find anything despite it being huge. I enjoy your videos!
No way! You should’ve said hi 😄
I love your thrift store! Thank you for the idea of thinking about your favorite color first. That is definitely helpful.

It wasn’t super recent. But I found a like new solid wood table, gorgeous. And it has the leaf that pops up out of the middle!
YES! Consider Magnolia Silos, Waco Tx. Recently I have found some of their decor items, mugs etc. at surrounding Goodwill at a BARGAIN. A #60 wreath, was only $3.99 at Goodwill.
Good Morning! What a FUN video!!! Such great tips and I can't wait to see what you found! Have a lovely weekend!! :)
The long sleeve black dress looks amazing on you!
Thank you for all the great tips.
The best thing that I found was my white milk glass lamps ,that I love! 🏡💕🤗
I love thrifting. Most of my clothes are thrifted, a lot of workout clothing also. My dishes, decor, craft room organizers and items, even some furniture, etc. better for the pocket book and environment as well as more unique.
Loved this video. Thanks for sharing. You look great!
I love thrifting! Recently I got a large copper laundry pot with handles, and the lid!!!! For $15 😍
What a find!!!!
@Fred Rose I know right!! I couldn't grab it fast enough and it was perfectly patina'd! It sits next to our fireplace now.
My daughter loves to shop thrift stores, and my grandchildren, now grown, have been trained well. She has found several strands of genuine pearls for only a few dollars...I taught her how to test to know real from costume jewelry. Geat buys!
Some of my favorite clothes were thrifted. It’s a great way to stretch a budget for sure.
Very happy thrifter here
I recently found some useful baskets. How do you budget for thrift shopping do you have a dollar amount you allow yourself each haul?
You always find the best things at your thrift stores!
Yes yes! And again yes! Hillary your a champion 🎉thanks for all the tips and tricks 😊
Hi Hillary, could you PLEASE do a smoothie tutorial video?
I haven’t thrifted much lately but the most memorable purchase was a green leather purse. It wasn’t designer and the reason I bought it was to repurpose the leather on it for home decor, BUT when I was cutting it I noticed something in the inner pocket and low and behold it was a $100 bill and what looked like an insulin syringe. After the shock I threw away the syringe but happily kept the $100 to do more thrifting. 🤣
Wow, a cool find and a fun story!
Hi Hillary and family! Thrifting is my JAM...Great tips. SHARED TO THE BURGH
I found a beautiful Fenton vase at a thrift store. I paid a little more than I wanted but I love it.
Good Video, I go to Good Will on Wednesday. Senior Citizen Day . Just went Wednesday. Found several cute things .
A Tello and Rose bag!!😯😯 Great tips!!
I have several articles of clothing that need to be altered. You reminded me.🙈❤️
I found an Ethan Allen corner desk at Goodwill for $35. It was a part of the maple set I have in my grandson's room. Huge score!
These are some thrifting ideas I never thought of before! Thank you❤
Thrifting saves money and is just plain fun. Love that laundry basket.
I have to agree!
Great info. thanks.
I love the thrifting videos!
I recently thrifted two beautiful framed paintings. Each painting in a quality wood frame was less than a cheap plastic empty frame at Walmart!
I have on a about an hour away. The store is a charity shop and stuff is so cheap. I have found so many nice things.
Just found a Brook’s Brother 100% wool midi length tweed coat for $18.99. I LOVE it!
I buy a few things at thrift stores but not soft things like clothes or bedding. Our town has a problem with bed bugs
How do you clean and disinfect everything?
Washing machine, dishwasher, or just soap and water
My coach wallet and Vera Bradley purse. Paid $5 each I think 🙌🏼
That’s so cool! You have 8 siblings! I am the oldest of 10 kids!! I love to thrift!!! ❤
Great tips!
About half of my home and clothing are thrifted and many of the crafts I make as well
I once experienced something being removed by someone, while I was in the dressing room. And/or employees restocking things from my basket, while I was in teh dressing room. Now I try to carry a paper sign to let them know I am trying on clothes. Please do NOT put back or remove.
I love thrifting!!!
Thrifting really only saves money if you are buying something you need. Otherwise you are spending money on “stuff”.
Lately Im finding thrifts in my area to be quite pricey
Butcher Box resources their meat from Australia and may require the mRNA vaccine for their livestock.
Thrifted more than enough fabric to recover a love seat ,chair and accent pillows for 7 dollars and 50 cents
Now I have the thrifting itch….but I don’t need a darn thing 😂
❤
