Have you tried frozen options? The freezing and thawing process itself will make some foods softer.

I need to know urgently if a senior with chewing and some swallowing issues possibly eat some form of Tofu. I would like any input anyone may have. I care for my 93 year old dad and 3/4 of my and most of night is about trying to find something for him to eat. I would appreciate any information anyone has to give. Thank you in advance. Chris P.

Hi Chris. I recommend calling his doctor and scheduling an appt with a nutritionist. I personally eat tofu and know that comes in varying degrees of firmness. Firmer types often come apart in chunks which might not be good. But it can be blended with other foods and liquids into a mousse like consistency. Any nutritionists or geriatricians here to weigh in?

Thank you so much for responding so quickly. I so appreciate it. His Dr. has told me he needs to be on just liquids there is nothing more I can do for him. I think I'm probably just trying to stop the reality of what I know is going to happen and having a problem with letting go. I have been the 27/4 sole caregiver for both of my parents over the past for 8 years. I watched my mom suffer through the unknown agony and final the stages of Alzheimer's, a struggle of about 15 years. It's just more knowing that now my Dad is also going through his own different, yet similar agony and looking into his eyes and seeing his desperation. The thoughts of him starving to his death, just overwhelms me and breaks my heart. I think I need to concentrate more just making him as comfortable as I can. All they ever asked of me is was to try and keep them from having to go to a to a nursing home and thankfully I was able to do that. Again, thank you. This helped to know what I need to do now and I appreciate it.

Maybe some fresh pressed juices or silken tofu mixed with a thin vegetable soup given with a syringe? This is what I m consuming after dental surgery

I hope you’re doing alright. I’m also on my 8th year (solo) with my beautiful mother who suffers from cerebral degeneration/brain atrophy. Mind is still sharp, motor skills are gone, choking is common. I use ‘Thickit’ and order it online from a great place called Cheap chux. You can add it to anything, including water, and there’s no taste or visible change whatsoever. It’s been a literal life saver. Hope that helps.

@@chrispalmer1794so sorry for your anguish. I watched my dad starve to death as he died from lung cancer. Now I care for my mom and give her Equate protein shakes from Walmart. Hope this helps.

my mother could not eat meshed potatoes because she has no teeth and not strong enough to swallow .
she could swallow food blended into smoothies little by little.
if there are small lumps and granules, she keeps in the mouth and spit out later.
    In that case,
    may I know
how food shall be prepared for her ???

Most elderly can't even get to a store that sells these things. Lactose intolerance wasn't on the map till they stopped selling fresh milk. The only stores I can get to don't sell cheese or yogurt or potatoes or fruit or vegetables just really bad canned food and some staples

So sorry you are struggling with getting food fresh food! Many larger grocery stores are delivering food for seniors with small annual fees. Walmart will deliver for $98/year which is less than $10 a month. Good luck to you!
