      It's a mixed bag. Some parts look much better, but some definetly look worse. It's a pity that a remaster can't be better than the original across the board. One thing I don't miss is the glossy "wet" effect that many people are complaining about the removal of though. It may look subjectively "impressive" in its way, but concrete just doesn't shine and glow like that when it's wet. It was way overused in the original.

    • @mathesar

      Yes surprisingly many of the textures in the 2007 version are higher resolution than the 2013 version.
      But Its not lazy devs, its the limits of memory technology. The reason is between 2007 and 2013 memory technology only saw a doubling in bandwidth. GDDR5 provides roughly 2x the bandwidth of GDDR3. Couple that with the fact consoles have to share GDDR5 bandwidth with the cpu, and the game is running at 60fps so it has roughly half the memory bandwidth per frame rendered it would if it was running 30fps.
      GDDR standards are created by the 300 companies that comprise the JEDEC consortium. Memory speeds are hitting the thermal and power limits of silicon. Until the recent advent of 3D-stacked memory, the only way past that those limits was to wait until the industry transitions to smaller transistor nodes allowing memory to be manufactured at smaller nodes that consume less electricity and thus produce less heat.

    • @GuySocket
      @GuySocket 8 лет назад +2

      All of that makes a lot of sense, especially when you consider how every other remaster (including open world ones like GTA V) make games look AND perform noticeably better in every way shape and form. Not to mention that you can run the original Bioshock on a PS4 equivalent PC at 1080p without a problem. Or that the PC version of the remaster has more problems than the console version of the remaster. So yes, it totally wasn't that the devs fucked it up. It's totally that the current gen consoles and PCs are more limited than last gen ones.

  • @danielwareking
    @danielwareking 8 лет назад +42

    By far the most annoying thing was the audio problems. The mix is all off, and random sounds are hard panned left or right (like reloading your gun). I didn't take any issue with performance, though it is sad to see some of these changes side-by-side and how the original game had more atmosphere at points.

      I wonder if it might be possible for modders to take the best parts of this remaster and just apply them to the original game, or vice versa so that you end up with a version that has the higher res models but with no audio issues.

    The original PC game at 4k with the mouse fix is superior in every way to the remaster. Think of this more of a PS4/Xbox One remaster with a 'bonus' release for PC. The original games are still the way to go on the PC. Just crank up the resolution and enjoy.

    • @usul573
      @usul573 8 лет назад +8

      On a positive note they have announced a patch is coming that fixes the mouse, speaker, fov, display, crashes/glitches/performance so Bioshock Remastered will be a lot better at least but it might come down to personal preference comparing it with the original but I'd recommend people play the original first.

      Problem with just cranking up the res of the 2007 version on PC is that the models are all pretty low poly and the higher resolutions just make this more and more apparent, especially if the textures are pretty low res as well. Certainly not up to the task on a 4k display.

I think the seaweed and fish added to the intro are great, because i always felt like the intro in the original game was a bit... flat and empty if that makes sense. I also like how the Remaster goes for (_in a technical sense_) better lighting and remade geometry and textures (again, its up to personal preference)
    On the other hand, i liked the original's shinier textures, and John has a point when he says that part of the art style has been "tampered" with in a sense

    The one major thing that you should have mentioned is how the audio is actually FIXED in Bioshock Remastered. The original PC version of bioshock couldn't handle more than 16 channels of audio, resulting in significant audio hitching and a really broken experience.
    The remastered (while it may default to stereo audio) doesn't seem to suffer any audio cutout. Even setting the original to stereo resulted in problems so this is a major fix that I personally had been waiting for since the beginning.
    Also, when you compared the audio of the original to the remaster, you had a turret running in the background which affected how the scene's sound quality sounded. That's just sloppy cmon guys.

    But in all honesty I'm not that upset about this Remastered and I think some people are going a bit overboard on this. But again people tend to overreact about new things, weather there justified or not. Anyway, I will be getting the Collection for my PS4 even though I got the PC Versions for Free.

    It looks like that besides the texture improvements, the remaster suffers from various changes that often looks worse than the original; and that also offers a significantly worse audio quality, for some reason. While it might not be lazy per se, it's definitely a baffling end result. :/

    I'll give them credit for giving the remaster for free on the PC, but yes, it's not very impressive, it's not 100% obvious if this remaster is better than the 2007 PC release which should be the case, if you use the PC game with the physics FPS mod, it's difficult to say this remaster really justify its existence on the PC (perhaps why it's free in the end), for the consoles it's different, specially the PS4, the XboxOne could get the original via backwards compatibility, but it would also be a decent gain going from 720/30 to 1080/60 anyway, so yes, if you don't have a PC, that's perhaps a good release.
    personally, I think I'll just stick with the original game with the physics FPS mod, it looks basically the same, but without the touches changing the original work (which don't really add much to it, like the video shows, it's mostly just different, with some stuff better and other worse)

    I prefer original PC version yeah a lot is improved in remaster but little missing effects here and there really kills the mood for me since this was one of the first next gen games for me and I remember very well how impressed I was with it.

    One of the advantages that consoles have over the pc is optimization. That fact that its fixed hardware (this is gonna change in the future) means that developers can get the most out of the machine.
    So I find it strange when I see a console game unable to keep a steady frame-rate.
    I think the keyword is: effort.
    When you dont put enough effort in a pc or console game you get something unoptimised or buggy.

    The amount of "effort put into this game" doesn't mean shit to me. The reason Bioshock is remembered so fondly is its atmosphere and presentation. A little change here and there wont do anything, but hundreds of subtle changes become noticeable very fast.
    If you're on PC, just use the old version, honestly... it looks better and holds up to this day.

    It's a bit strange how lazy these remasters are... They barely touched up the visuals in any meaningful way and if anything managed to ADD bugs and downgrade a lot of particle affects and reflections...
    It's good that it's now playable on next gen consoles but the original just felt and looked better :/
    Oh not to mention certain audio recordings are bugged and play the wrong recording.... When 2K isn't lazily remaking the same borderlands game over and over and calling them "sequels" they're busy ruining duke nukem or doing a sloppy job on a bioshock remaster

    Are you guys sure you have your XO RGB settings set correctly? Your black levels are almost a telltale sign of improper RGB settings. Especially x360 games running on XO, that look way too black. Like a screen or capture calibrated to limited RGB, but the XO set to Full RGB.

    • @dark1x
      @dark1x 8 лет назад

      Yes. It's not like there are a lot of options. The capture card only supports full RGB. If you feed it limited, the image is super washed out.

    I was lucky to not have any graphical glitches or major bugs or crashes. The only thing i dislike about the remaster is the lack of shiney wet surfaces and the way the water looks and the lack of the 5.1 and 7.1 options (due to them being broken so they were just removed altogether) even though they settings can be changed in the ini and it still works for most proper setups

    And my PC decided that once I get into a corridor in Neptune's Bounty the frame likes to run at 7-15. This persists when I go ANYWHERE else, but isn't evident until you enter that hallway. Have no tried just starting a new game as I don't want to bother getting up to that point again.

    So even though the playstation clearly shows worse performance and visual quality than the xbox version, you guys claim they're both the same? Wow. Same happened with Dying Light with the latest patch.
    When the results are reversed you never waste a second 'handing' the win to the playstation.
    Why, when you should be lauding the xbox port for getting BETTER performance out of a system only 70% as capable than the PS, do you instead basically just say they're the same? But when the results are pifflingly close but reversed the award always goes to playstation?
    On an unrelated note, I found the smoothness of 60fps sort of distracting. It might have been something to do with controller acceleration but the game felt like a hollywood blockbuster when some idiot turn on that smoothmotion thing that so many TVs seem to have. Just made it feel cheap.

      I know that DF leans toward Sony in comparison's, but from the vid I saw hardly any Xbox One footage and never heard the commentator say any major differences about either version.
      Could you tell me where you saw the Xbox excelling over the PS4?
      Maybe I zoned out during that spot because the guys voice was just "blah blah blah."
      Thanks in advance.

    Thank goodness I got the PC version, free remasters! Bioshock Infinite doesn't need a remaster, in fact the original release on PC is way better than on Next-gen Consoles! Damn, why couldn't they turn up the texture filtering on consoles? Sucks to play on console now, don't you think? But again, the remasters don't look any better than the original on max settings, just the same game with a reduction in framerate. Sucks, but at least I didn't have to pay for it~

    Which version to play? Go with the original on pc. Just keep in mind it doesn't support 'dts connect and dolby live' for 5.1 audio. But it does support analog/digital uncompressed 5.1 very well'
    Just! If you wanna use a controller, you have to tell it ahead of time. You go into a options menu to select it. Only a controller or key/mouse one at a time.
