This game looked better on One X when the unpatched version had a near completely locked 60fps, as well as forced 16x anisotropic filtering on all three titles.
I think you guys should do a deep dive into console AF. Time after time, we see AF being used that is "sub par" whether that be lower multipliers or linear options. The question is: why??? Even a rx 470 can handle 16x AF with NO perceivable performance loss. What are Sony/Microsoft/Developers seeing that we are not? Is limited memory buffers a factor? Bandwidth? I've had this question for years and I think DF is the only people who could properly investigate this.
Don't no forget that all unenhanced games get upgraded to 16xAF on the X. So why is it not used in enhanced games? Hell digital foundry made a point about this with Halo 5. Before it's update, it got the 16xAF boost. But after the X update, it was reduced and it looked bad
After all this years still there is no fix for the anisotropic filtering on ps4, DF I think I will be good to send this analysis to them to see if they can fix those minor issues so we can play this games as they should
Stutter on PC is related to Win 10 in many cases , not with games ... Forza 7 and need for speed where some of the games that had that problem until they update win ! In my case at least
Some people are more sensitive to frame drops and stuttering. I think this is the case more then anything. Also game developers are rushed way to much in making game's. I wonder how long they have to remaster a game compared to a normal game development cycle. Either way so think all game development needs to take longer. We as gamers have been getting feed allot of garbage quality games. I want to see quality over quantity.
Yeah, I am running on a 2080ti, 9900k, 16 gigs, intel NVMe at 4k and they are definitely not supposed to happen in spite of being maxed out. Turning on vsync and reloading the checkpoint help alleviate the issue a bit on Infinite.

Glad you made me more aware of animation and camera stutter Alex! I have been experiencing this throughout the Metro Series and its 4A Engine and I was thinking that I was just crazy. When running Exodus at high frames rates, often times, NPC character animations seem to update at much lower FPS than the game itself (this was especially noticeable in the Caspian level for me). Meanwhile Metro 2033 has this weird issue of camera stutter when you are close to wire fences (although it is not actually dropping frames).

Nice thanks for the update guys! Heard that these titles received updates on other platforms, and it's nice to see exactly what they tweaked. Also good to know we were both staring at the same walls early this week :P
Before these patches. The PS4 Pro Version with Boost mode on actually played at a locked 60fps on Bioshock 1&2 and an even more stable fps on Bioshock Infinite with boost mode on. Which was a big improvement from how they ran on base PS4 at launch. Like they were pretty much perfect. Minus texture Filtering which was a PS4 bug that was fixed with a system stability patch for later UE3 and UE4 games on PS4. But Dishonred Definitive Edition and DMC on PS4 still have the Filtering bug. DMC was patched later on though. But I'd rather have the 1080p 60fps with Boost Mode on, on Pro as it actually runs way better on all of the Bioshock games on PS4 Pro then. Also you can fix the micro stutters or background streaming fps drops by using a SSD.
@@CroneRaven1810 If you switch to 1080p with Super Sampling off before you start the game. It should be a native 1080p, and not a downsampled 1440p. The chimney section and the section where you are at the dock over looking the town with a skyrail going around it. I forget that sections name. But do this and you should get better performance.

Kinda weird, I always felt that bioshock 1 and 2 feel like they are held together by a duct tape. Wonder what's going on with the engine or whatever. It never felt smooth and proper on any PC that I played them...
@Yaro Maybe some of that water from the ocean not only leaked through the cracks into Rapture...but also leaked into the game engine as well !! Lmao !! XD
So glad to see the first game running on series x no longer has that annoying stuttering issue and runs very smooth. I’ve been replaying it the last few days and it is an amazing experience.
@@turrican4d599 I mean I wasn’t analyzing all aspects but from my play through I didn’t notice any issues with audio or visuals. I don’t think there was any update for next gen. In Bioshock 2, the speargun can´t pin the splicers on the walls in the remaster anymore. Good job from the developers to break this fun mechanic... Also, global lightning seems to be enabled by default, and you can´t turn it off, which degrades the lightning notably.
I was in the middle of Bioshock 1 last week on my PS4 Pro/4K TV when the patch (1.3) dropped alongside a console update. Confused, I installed/restarted my console and holy crap it was a huge improvement. All of a sudden everything was crisp and clear on my TV and my character movement was smooth. (This happened at the end of the Hephaestus level where you need to collect the parts to build the emp). I wish I would've known this patch was coming because I would have gladly waited the extra couple days to be able to see crisp textures and fluid movement on my 4K TV for the entire game, it was like playing a remaster vs a crappy port.
The original non-remastered Bioshock 1 and 2 on PC with a decent graphics card (RX480 in my case) are much better in terms of visual design, frame-rate, menu navigation and audio than both their remastered PC and console counterparts. You can play the originals on PC if you buy the remasters on either GOG or Steam which they are included with.
You're 100% right. For example, the flowing water in the corridors of Rapture looks like real, legit water. The water in the "remaster" just looks like videogame water. The way it animates and reflects light is just all screwed up compared to the original.
I've never played Bioshock because there is no good way to play it. The original PC ports have a ton of issues and crashes and are generally rough. When the remasters released I was excited to play them, only to see that water visuals were worse and that they ALSO have crashes. Years later both Bioshock ports still suck and there is no optimal way to play this game.
This is why I am playing it on PS5 and so far they forgot the freezing problem in Bioshock 1 for the PS4 Pro version. My PS4 Pro become useless in less than two years. Now its just a media console for HBO MAX and Netflix
Why do consoles always have low levels (or no, in this case) of anisotropic filtering? On PC, I don't even notice performance impact from enabling it even at 16x.

The Switch port was better optimized for 30fps than these are. That remaster was outsourced to a Chinese company and they did a very solid job. I game on everything, with my PC being my main hub. I can say that the drop to 30fps was jarring at first, but my eyes adjusted after an hour or two. I just wanted to analyze “Infinite” at first, but then I found myself playing through the whole thing in less than 2 days. Upon analyzing, I basically found that they ported the PS3/Xbox 360 versions of the game. The assets and textures were identical when I compared it to those ports. The Switch can just run them better. The foliage in Infinite looked awful and I thought there was no way that even the OG ports used these assets. Only to find out that they did. I just didn’t realize how much better the PC and remastered editions looked in comparison to the PS3/Xbox 360 ports.
The best way to experience this game is by you playing it on any system you please and loving every moment. Who needs comparisons when you can just play games and take in the experience on any device.
Ram has nothing to do with this cause they didn't change assets. It's more to do with GPu, although 30% more power doesn't give you stable 4k. Oh and this is a terrible patch.
@BlindBison Its insanely inexpensive. I have been enabling 16xAF on PC for probably the past 15-20 years on every piece of hardware I've ever owned. And I've not always had top end hardware in my system. Enabling it simply doesn't impact performance in a noticeable way, maybe 1-2fps at best. Sure this could be a big thing if console devs are trying to hit a stable 30 or 60fps. But at least 4x should be more than possible, maybe its just one of those features that devs think that majority of the console player base would not notice.
@BlindBison As far as I know (and it's not a lot) you have actually given a pretty good answer to your own question. A console apu shares the memory bandwidth between cpu and gpu (and it's not like they have a lot), and with AF being bandwidth heavy, they rather use that bandwidth for stuff they think have a more visibly positive effect on the game, especially when targeting 30 fps.
PCs have DDR4 RAM for CPU as well as dedicated GDDR5/6 VRAM for the GPU so bandwidth isn't a problem. Consoles have to use the same RAM for CPU+GPU and some of it is reserved for the OS so they tend to be bandwidth starved. That said, 8x should really be the minimum amount of AF any modern game should have.
@@axayd Like I said Ive been enabling 16xAF without any care on PC for the past 20 years. This would be on hardware that is nowhere near todays PC hardware and nowhere near the next gen consoles. At best its around 1-2fps difference and most the time the difference is none existent.
Thanks, Alex! Great work as always! :D I was hoping they could release a fix to address the graphical downgrades in certain parts for this collection, compared to the originals. But it's sad that it remains this way.
There's also a fun tidbit, this is on PC as well and was never fixed. The columbia skybox has one area that doesn't load in properly and everytime you look at it the FPS takes a nosedive as it redraws the entire thing in again. (like you'll see an entire floating building appear out of nowhere along with the clouds everytime you look at it) Those might've been the framedrops that the guy was noticing on Infinite if it was mostly outdoors.

I don't mind-frame drops as long as they are not too noticeable but screen tear is the one thing that will put me off a game and stop me playing it. I have a PS4 but I play all games on PC except the exclusives which are truly amaozing in every respect.
AF on 16 is a must have. It never has more than 1-2 fps performance drop. Why don't companies use it all the time?!? I honestly dont understand it. Go test it on ANY game. The worst it can be is like 2 fps drop. (and thats on a old computer from like 2012) Also, is it me or 2K is taking a note from Blizzard on how to remaster a game? LOL.
Should be getting a consistent 16 AF on Series X and PS5, so that's one thing to look forward to. We have to remember, the X and Pro were ultimately experiments, and both still hobbled by the Jaguar-based APU -- in 2016/17, that was still the only console option from AMD, and Microsoft and Sony had to surgically alter it as best they could for the mid-gens. These mid-gen consoles only contributed to 1 in 5 unit sales in their respective hardware ecosystems vs. their base/slim console siblings' sales, but they were effective for additional PR/coverage and each provided more than a handful of highly impressive upgrades (and a bunch of merely 'good' or middling upgrades). So, not exactly pillars of consistency in dev upgrades for the mid-gens, but an excellent training session towards this fall's cross-gen transition kick off.
Another excellent video from you guys doing a great job, keep up the great work! But there is a very big and glaring issue people should be aware of with Bioshock infinite since this update! On Xbox one x, once you reach the good time club The performance of the game becomes absolutely horrid. The game will full on freeze and for a few seconds both in combat and out of combat at seemingly random but frequent. However during combat you experience a lot more slow down and frame drops. and somehow the problem seems to get only worse the further you progress in the game after the good time club. I thought this was a really glaring issue and would be important for others to know before they make a purchase or attempt to play BioShock infinite at least on the Xbox one x, I am unaware if this is a problem on other systems. Hopefully you guys are able to provide that awareness for others.
The new consoles with their far more powerful CPUs can't get here soon enough. This is disappointing to see these kind of issues on updated, last gen, titles.
Having to throw more powerful hardware at a problem is the reason I stopped playing on PC. With fixed hardware consoles, some tweaking and optimization from the developers is the only way to go.

Very interesting video. I only own the Xbox One S, but I still take a lot of interest for 4K assets of the games I own for when I eventually get the Series X. Having recently played back through the BioShock Collection I would be interested to see if, in the case of BioShock Infinite, the Emporia level still suffers from the abysmal performance issues that I at the very least encountered. Throughout the whole level I had non-stop stuttering that made it close to unplayable. I am not sure if it’s exclusive to current gen, or Xbox overall, but that level was the worst experience of the collection for me.

I mean a mid range PC can crunch through these games at 4k60fps with ease and zero drops. I don't think this is the console hardware at fault its more like the devs simply not knowing what they are doing.
Strange how the consoles are running into memory bandwidth issues when these games... don't use much memory at all.
Timmy51m I had no problems at all with bioshock 2 remaster & finished it last week at 4K 120fps, I haven’t tried bioshock 1 though.

@@Timmy51m Recently tried to play through them again starting with the remasters. For me everything looks and runs great but it crashes 20% of the time when I open the map. I gave up. Are the originals running ok for you? I do own them. Win 10?
I love when there's a new Digital Foundry video. It makes my day.
Your positive comment makes my day too.
Surprise! Underwhelming remaster gets underwhelming update!
All the issues, even the AA low quality texture draw distance issues have been fixed on the Xbox SX. So it’s 4K/60 and god damn gorgeous.
Anisotropic?
I second this :)
Yesssss!!!
Yeah. AF has essentially no performance hit at all at this point in time.
Don't no forget that all unenhanced games get upgraded to 16xAF on the X. So why is it not used in enhanced games?
Hell digital foundry made a point about this with Halo 5. Before it's update, it got the 16xAF boost. But after the X update, it was reduced and it looked bad
Same for this game actually.
I just beat Bioshock 2 the other day before the update.
But then it had the forced 16xAF. Now it's gone.
Bioshock Infinite runs since the October Patch for the One X also in 4k@60hz (or near 4k) resolution. Its much sharper now.
It's amazing how devs are afraid of turning AF to 16x on older games, AF barely makes a dent in performance lol.
After all this years still there is no fix for the anisotropic filtering on ps4, DF I think I will be good to send this analysis to them to see if they can fix those minor issues so we can play this games as they should
Good man yourself !! :)
The stutter happens even on a PC with ssd. Been running into the same issue.
I have no stuttering on PC, and use max setting at 4k.
Stutter on PC is related to Win 10 in many cases , not with games ... Forza 7 and need for speed where some of the games that had that problem until they update win ! In my case at least
I have no stutter on my old laptop, i7 4750HQ with GTX950m, stable 60 at 1080p

Running around Rapture in the DLC for Bioshock Infinite has been really rough in terms of loading frame drops.
Alex is such a great addition to Digital Foundry.
Who?
Glad you made me more aware of animation and camera stutter Alex!
I have been experiencing this throughout the Metro Series and its 4A Engine and I was thinking that I was just crazy.
When running Exodus at high frames rates, often times, NPC character animations seem to update at much lower FPS than the game itself (this was especially noticeable in the Caspian level for me).
Meanwhile Metro 2033 has this weird issue of camera stutter when you are close to wire fences (although it is not actually dropping frames).
The Metro redux is a better remaster than this

Dude you are just one guy and so talented they are a group of people. Kudos to you
Before these patches.
Is it possible to put the system output to 1080p, super sampling off and boost mode on? That is the old 1080p60FPS on the new patch?
@@CroneRaven1810 If you switch to 1080p with Super Sampling off before you start the game. It should be a native 1080p, and not a downsampled 1440p. If you have 4k TV just switch to 1080p before you start the game and it will also be a native 1080p and not a downsampled 1440p. So try that. It should work. And then you should get a locked 60fps on Bioshock 1&2 and 60fps locked on Infinite with slight drops in only two places. The chimney section and the section where you are at the dock over looking the town with a skyrail going around it. I forget that sections name. But do this and you should get better performance.
For anyone on Xbox One X with the stuttering issues - putting the console in offline mode stopped the stuttering for me. Weird I know, but worked. Kudos to the original poster of this idea. Not ideal, but a workaround for the time being. I created a ticket on 2K’s site. I’d encourage anyone to do the same.
It won't ever get patch, thank for sharing it, not useful for me though I refunded it, I'll just pirate it in pc, I don't think this kind of dev deserve any money, they make a broken game (borderlands 3) they remove pro enhanced from mafia 3 for both consoles when they release the definitive edition and now this awful stutter, is that even legal? mafia 3 thing seems illegal for me, you buy a game and then they reduce the quality, so you arent getting what you paid for
Why even put out patches until they're ready for primetime? Feels pretty short sighted
That's pretty much every game put out in this modern era.

No Switch video about Bioshock?
Did you play it from the collection or just bioshock 1 itself
@@SkiCashEmOut The collection.

@@ZZZGGGLLLAAAHHH Thanks for the heads up regarding the originals vs the remasters.
Looks like I'll definitely be playing the originals on PC.

Just started this again on X. Completed it on 360, Xbox 1 and PC. Still a gorgeous game. Only about 30 mins in on BS1 and forgot how much I loved the Art Deco architecture ❤️. Hopefully a new patch will be incoming
1:14 And One X has 12 GB VRAM. It is the most crucial point why it can run those two games (and others) at native 4K. PS4 Pro has only 9 GB of VRAM.
Ram has nothing to do with this cause they didn't change assets. It's more to do with GPu, although 30% more power doesn't give you stable 4k.
Oh and this is a terrible patch.
I cannot comprehend how the hell devs aren't using 16x AF all the time. It's so cheap.
@@colfari I was looking for a way to explain it, but you just did an excellent job lol
2K would you kindly gives us a patch soon please?

bioshock 1 and 2 are masterpieces!
There's also a fun tidbit, this is on PC as well and was never fixed.
The columbia skybox has one area that doesn't load in properly and everytime you look at it the FPS takes a nosedive as it redraws the entire thing in again. (like you'll see an entire floating building appear out of nowhere along with the clouds everytime you look at it)

Was the Xbox One X stutter ever fixed?
Thank you so much was so close to purchasing.
The new consoles with their far more powerful CPUs can't get here soon enough. This is disappointing to see these kind of issues on updated, last gen, titles.

I hope they fix Bio 1 and 2 on Xbox One X 😥
Very interesting video. I only own the Xbox One S, but I still take a lot of interest for 4K assets of the games I own for when I eventually get the Series X. Having recently played back through the BioShock Collection I would be interested to see if, in the case of BioShock Infinite, the Emporia level still suffers from the abysmal performance issues that I at the very least encountered. Throughout the whole level I had non-stop stuttering that made it close to unplayable. I am not sure if it’s exclusive to current gen, or Xbox overall, but that level was the worst experience of the collection for me.
So sad they dont care enough to get this sort of stuff right.
