Im with you had been Target Electronics Team Leader from 98 to 2009. Feels like just yesterday I could not go on the floor without being asked to unlock a copy of Nintendogs for DS every 30 seconds.
The 360 was a shitty attempt from Microsoft to one up sony. Even after the huge mess up with the ps3 it still won against the 360.
Microsoft is lucky that they have the PC/software division to fall back on. If Sony screwed up and had to spend over a billion dollars to remedy some hardware failure(s) they wouldn't be making consoles anymore. MS spent like 1.15B because of the "red ring of death."

I believe the reason why they chose 1440p is because some particle effects are tied to resolution. You can try this on PC version on prologue chapter. If you go on witch time, the rain droplet size become smaller the higher the resolution is. At 720p theyre huge. At 4k, you can barely see them.

Good thing I got the Switch bundle for both Bayo games. Sure the frame rate may not be super smooth when in handheld mode, but to even take it on the go is sweet. Not to mention it's on the console in which Bayo 3 will be released solely on too.
The frame rate in the switch version of Bayonetta seems more than enough to me, but then I’m not a frame rate wiz, and for me for a long time to switch version of the original bayonet was the best version to go with in terms of the best console version.

That those games are a few of the reasons I got a SEGA MASTER SYSTEM .. What a weird ass console ..especially my RAMBO .....WAIT FOR IT.... “THE VIDEO GAME”!! Where u got to shoot coco puffs! But I was a kid .. and come on.. it was Rambo?! Space harrier was just weird and awesome .. even to a little kid .. shinobe.. I always felt awesome to at least get the big arcade games on my weird little console Vs my brothers Nintendo in his room .. genesis is where I finally felt vindicated .. didn’t jump into Nintendo till Wii, Wii U .. then a switch to compliment my PS5 as an old man.. and this game was bad ass .. never had played vanquish .. and still haven’t tried BAYONETTA 2..

I know we're always asking the DF team for a ton of analysis, but it would be great if they analized DMC3 on Switch. It seems like a port where Capcom actually invested some money and the DMC crew made interesting changes.

@@weaverquest DMC3 is well worth playing. The combat style from 5 is borrowed from 3, and with the Switch port, you can actually change styles by pressing the D pad. It's really smooth.
@@weaverquest if you haven't played dmc3 I would recommend you to play it, it is best in the series though there is some backtracking but still it's an awesome game.

I must really be getting old, when I don't see how a resolution higher than 1080p can be "disappointing".
For big huge TVs/monitor i guess. I don't think it's an age thing, bigger numbers always sell and create new consumer needs. True benefits depends from the product.
For 4K screens, whatever under 1620p looks bad.
I think it's the fact that it just does this and that's it. There's no improved textures or lighting enhancements. Even skyrim special edition was more of a remaster than this.
You didn't understand the topic. It's a decade-old game from a previous generation. There should be zero problem getting it to run at 4K. Except here we are for some reason.

While a great port I’m still disappointed they aren’t full 4K on Pro and X1X. The game is not that demanding and can easily be full 4K on Pro and X1X. Hopefully they have a future patch for 4K on Pro and X1X.
Maybe not on the Pro but definitely on the X. A 970 can’t lock 4k60 and a PS4 Pro is roughly equivalent to it, or an RX 470. The X on the other hand is more like a 480 or 980, so should be able to smooth out the drops.
I suppose you're well versed with Platinum's proprietary engine if you warranted a comment that it's not demanding.
The game wasn't made to run at such a high resolution... like almost all older games... probably, on the next-gen, the games will be far easy to run at 4K than any remake...

Remember when PS4 pro and XBOX 1X announced that their games were going to run at 4k with a clearly inferior hardware to those of PCs that struggled with 4k?

I played the hell out of vanquish on my ps3 and absolutelly love it. I never played bayonetta so im really looking to play that. I allready have my copy of this collection and dam, that steel case looks unfrggnbelievable. Its so beautifull.
I'm kinda upset that this game didn't fully utilize the full power of the One X or Ps4 Pro. Both versions should of been 4k60......no exceptions.
The Pro could handle 2560*2160 and the X 3840*2160. That would still look great ont he PRO, as only one axis would need to be scaled. Also, 2X msaa would benefit both versions.

I'd like to see a comparison between Xbox One X and PC versions of Bayonetta, they refrenced their PC footage in this video but I want a side by side comparison. I've been looking forward to see DigitalFoundry's video and am very happy with their Xbox and Playstation comparisons.

@@dantevic I aim better with motion aiming. Some other people also prefer motion aiming then stick aiming. Also if you don't like it, you can turn it off. It's a win win situation

FF XIII is the best looking game on the PS3 in glorious 1080p, soo. Graphics still hold up to this day.

1440p isn't bad if it is stable 60FPS with all settings maxed. Though it is false advertising on the game for consoles touting 4K when it's 2k. Still a great game and I'm happy it's getting more attention. Just wish it wasn't advertised in such a way that it could piss people off.
yes it is bad considering this is a last gen game and there are current gen games that achieve that.
@@GraveUypo There are also current gen games that underachieve that... So your point is somewhat mute. Also most high end PC set ups stick to 1440P to get better framerates and have all settings maxed. I'm sure the OneX could achieved Native 4K, but it would have likely effected the consistent 60FPS. Then they could lower some graphical settings and or maybe enable a resolution modifier reduction in heavy areas. It likely would cost more time and money to do that while porting. If you want to blame anything, then blame the crap CPU both current gen consoles have. It is the major reason second to development/publisher lazy/incompetence. To give some examples of current and previous gen games performing worse or just as good as this game. Nier Automata, Crackdown 3, Last of Us Remaster, the launch of Halo Trilogy on base and Xbox One S, Yakuza series, Monster Hunter World "in regards to performance or graphics being sacrifice for other", Batman Arkham Collection, Bioshock Collection, Tekken 7, and etc etc. I'm sure more could been done for the One X version and the base and Pro version could be ironed out a bit more. Still it isn't bad in realistic perspective and is only bad at bad marketing in saying there is 4K when there is none. Games like Bayonetta demand a consistent or at minimum near consistent 60FPS for the fluid gameplay. The resolution is secondary if less depending on if settings are maxed before or after the first issue. Also at least in comparison to the PS3 version it is a huge upgrade as the PS3 version by Platinum head director own words was one of the worse mistakes they made... That isn't far off when it sold more on the PS3 vs 360 and it's performance even after updates can get really unplayable at spots. So for the port to PS4 they had to go nearly at scratch and it wasn't using or partially using existing code of the 360 version as slightly mentioned here when comparing the darker shade on both 360 and the Xbox One version "which I slightly prefer the darker tone". So the PS4 and Pro got a huge boost while the Xbox One if already had the 360 backwards compatibility got a resolution bump and a smooth 60FPS throughout. Not counting the cutscenes as many games even today still at times like played out scenes in 30FPS.

@jvalex18 Monitors count 1440P as 2K often. I mean we can get more technical and be honest that 4K if going by actual resolution isn't entirely 4K either and is a bit off numerically as well in actual native resolution. I just use 2K even though it's 1440P because it is closer to that round than saying something odd like 2.Xk or all the way to what is called 4k.
If that last statement wasn't clear I understand the 2K =1080P. I'm using 2K to refer to the 1440P because it's closer to 1080P than 4K at 3840x2160. I could say quad HD, but that doesn't sound great in my personal view so I rather not.
At the very least I would have expected something like dynamic resolution scaling targeting 4K on the Pro/X.

Meanwhile, DMC 5 runs at a full 4K on One X and a respectable 1800p on the Pro. Both also do a fairly decent job of maintaining 60fps during gameplay.
@L T Last I checked 3840x2160 is the standard for 4K. Ultra isn't the end all/be all either. Try running RDR2 maxed out if you really want a good laugh. I game on a 1060 and while most of the time I get a better experience on PC there are instances where the One X performs better. ...Now's probably about the time you try and tell me that you have a monster rig with 2080ti's SLI. Who knows? Maybe you do? Even if you game on a CRAY supercomputer there's no good reason to take the piss out of a console that can punch above it's weight. ...One last thing. What do you mean by "maybe with motion blur"? You do know that motion blur has next to zero effect/impact on performance, right? On or off if the resolution is set the game is going to run at that resolution. 🤦♂️

Late to the party but the first GPU I bought with my money was a 7870. I still remember trying to play the tomb raider reboot with TressFX on... dropped like 10 frames per second.
I enjoyed the remasters more than current gen games this console cycle. Rogue Trooper!
Ninja Gaiden 2 is not 4K on X1X, but it does hit a virtually locked 60 fps at about 1700p. So even under emulation NG2 is arguably more impressive than this port.
I hope Series X makes all BC content 4K. Maybe even 8K if and where feasible.

I really expected at least 1800p on the Pro and 2160p on the X. I mean 1440p on Vanquish made some sense because they doubled the framerate, but here they could have pushed harder. Hopefully there will be an update to upgrade the resolution.
I heard that the reason that it's 1440p, was not only because of performance, but also because effects rendering was tied to resolution, but I don't know much about this.
To this day, you will still get PS3 fan boys saying that the patch Sega released fixed the frame rate issues, when all it did was fix the load times, all this despite Digital Foundry showing how horrible the it ran.

Funny hedging here, as I remember them asserting that the Wii U version was the definitive version of the game.
I know this video was made before the series consoles released, but what i want to know is, if i have bayonetta and vanquish 360 discs, will i see major improvement on the remasters on series x? Is it worth it to buy again, or stick to the originals?
The Switch version of the original Bayonetta was the best version for a long time in my opinion and the most faithful t the Xbox 360 original.

Why would you not compare these to the PC version? It’s THE DEFINITIVE VERSION right now.
And it’s bizarre how much the PC platform gets ignored and downplayed every time John is in a video. If It do appear it’s either to reinforce the good old cliched lie that is “unless you spend 2000$ on a monster gaming PC” or when the PC platform have gotten a shoddy port or version. In a video like this when it’s the definitive version and runs well on basically every potato out there? Not a chance in hell he’ll talk it up or show it off.

They should have just pushed for 60fps at 1080p cause 60fps at 4k is a pipe dream on modern consoles.
8:05 that happened with most multi plat games from last gen, at the end of the day I think it`s a subjective matter. I personally always preferred the "darker" look of the 360, PS3 games usually looked too flat and dull for my taste.
You can put RGB full setting to ON for the same effect on PS consoles or even PC
I was always under the impression that games on 360 didn't often support full RGB range, so if you were to use Full RGB output on console, you would get black crush and a more stark picture.
That was my experience too when I bought a used Xbox 360 recently, and noticed many games ended up having black crush, which was never an issue on my PS3. Set it to limited RGB range, and everything returned to normal.
Infact, I even remember DF comparing either BF3 or BF4 on PS3 and XB360 back when they released, and they pointed out the black crush on XB360.
If this is the case, you ideally wouldnt want black crush, but if you liked the look of it, maybe that was why you liked the look of the picture on Xbox 360 more? Limited and Full RGB ranges shouldn't make much of a visible difference, but on paper Full is supposed to be better.
You could force the same effect on PS3 and 4 by mismatching the RGB ranges between the console and the display. Display needs to be set to limited, console to full.
A more reasonable way of getting similar results is to lower the gamma on your TV.
But I would love to know if there's some other reason why Xbox looks different.
@@shotgunmasterQL Best thing for me was RGB allways ON and put brightness at 60,70/100 in game.This way you get a big bump in contrast and in the same time you can see everything.I do this on both my PC and PS4 Pro
@@agentsmith6161 That wouldn't fix black crush, though. The game brightness just adjusts gamma, so at best its just going to make all those crushed blacks brighter (which sounds awful to me, light blacks with missing detail). Generally, you shouldn't need to mess with the game brightness settings at all, but that's sort of whatever, because settings are meant to be changed according to everyone's preferences.
The correct settings would just be leaving gamma in TV and game on neutral, and RGB ranges to match (or set the display and console both to limited, just to be safe), then maybe lower the TV backlight strength accordingly.
On XB360, I use Limited RGB range, on PS3 and 4 I have it set to auto (which defaults to Full range).
Edit. I don't see how increasing gamma would improve contrast somehow, since contrast is the separation of the darkest and brightest shades visible at the same time, but gamma would elevate all shades, so the contrast should effectively be the same as previously.
My buddy at my job just surprised me with the PlatinumGames 10th Anniversary Bundle (this and Vanquish) and I am PUMPED to try it!
I didn’t play any of Platinum’s games back in the day but bought Bayonetta on a whim when it released for PC... gameplay is amazing and the graphics hold up shockingly well for an older game. I was so impressed I bought Vanquish for PC before it even released. I wish Nier Automata had received a proper port like those two. It’s one of the worst PC ports of recent memory IMHO
It ran fine on back compat didn’t really need an update unless you only owned ps4

Edit: I owned the Xbox 360 then the Wii U version and I was very close of getting the steam version but then I’m just wasting money since I beat this 100% on Xbox 360 but still I do love this game

i love platinum bought all bayonetta version , my favorite was the for free 360 BC version on the one X, but i have to say that Platinum games were a bit lazy , this could run easily at native 4K at least on the X, and maybe 1600p on the pro...

Yeah what the other commenter said and adding that platinum is fully focusing on their new project coming out and also gearing up for Bayonetta 3 so they were understandably busy but if they had handled this port I’m sure it would have been amazing

These 2 game's have already been available for both the PS4 & Pro & Xbox One & X for a while now but i powered up both my console's to check on any Weekend Offers & suddenly both game's are now being sold wrapped together in a 10th Anniversary Edition which i'd be happy to buy if they actually made some major changes to sharpen the looks/load times/locked in framerates but this is just another quick cash cow...
If you want to buy the 2 together because you've not got your Xbox 360 (as the PS3 Version was a mess) then do so but i dont see anything that would say Yes this has been upgraded!..
If you want to look at what a proper remaster & coincidentally that was a 10th Anniversay Edition should look like is the amazing work done on Halo Combat Evolved 10th Anniversary Edition as you clearly see they really pushed the boat out on that game & it looked more like a remake...
The true telling point is when your playing thar 10th Anniversary Edition with the original graphics & then quickly switch it to the updated graphics (without having to do so via the optiins menu) by the click of button & your bombarded by a game that looks like it was made for the Xbox 360 or even Xbox One & PS4...
Paying for those sort of upgrades i truly dont mind but these are just lazy ass ports & i wouldnt be surprised if they just bundled them together & slapped on a 10th Anniversary name to get it to sell!...
Halo 10th Anniversay isn't the only game to get a full make over & it would be great if these 2 game's had been done in a similar manner as i played these 2 games to death but & would gladly play them to death again if they looked so much better but there's no way of anything of major significance that has been changed & I'll reiterate thats a rip off , plain & simple...
I'd love to play these 2 game's with updated specs but why should i as they look almost identical & i still own my Xbox 360 & both of the original versions of these 2 game's...
The only gamer's who should or may want to buy these 2 are the one's l that havent played either 1 or both of these 2 game's but thats it , & im tired of seeing remastered put on many game's & they are just the same game...
I do know the difference between a Remaster & a Remake but when 2 classic game's are bundled together with next to no changes but they still call it an Anniversary Edition is just wrong....
This is yet another missed opportunity to take 2 great game's & give them the deserved upgrades they needed to look & play even better on todays console's but you can clearly see this is as minimilist as you can get & its a pity as when they do this it leaves a sour taste in one's mouth for delibaretly denying both game's ( especially Bayonetta ) all those great extra upgrades a proper Anniversay Edition should have...
Its simple " Buy It , Dont Buy it "
But don't buy into that these are 2 better versions of the original game's as they are not & its lame attempt at separating you from your money...

On top of the false advertising, the Xbox UK Twitter account even called it a 4K update. Which made because of how their tweet was worded, they made it sound like the 360 version was getting a 4K X Enhanced patch.

As a big DMC fan, I really really struggle to like Bayonetta, I WANT to like it! But everytime I play it, I get very let down
It plays very similarly to the DMC games, It's better than Devil May Cry 1, it's better than Devil May Cry 3, it's arguably better than 5 (I would say it's mechanically more interesting) -- it's obviously better than the other fucking 3. Get over your shit and learn the game.

@@TheNomadJack Hey, I'm just saying if you really are a DMC fan, you should take the time to learn it. I've never loved any character action game on the first playthrough when you only have the starter weapons and abilites. it's only when I go back on the harder difficulties and try for S ranks (or Platinums or whatever) that they grow on me. Great character action games are few and far between and only a handful are this good. It's worth the time.

These "remasters" that are essentially just the same game running at a higher resolution are some of the worst thing to come out of this generation and I hope that the full BC of next gen makes this a thing of the past as they should be able to just patch older games. I do worry that the next money making scheme will be "upgrade patches" that they'll sell you for this kind of thing. Higher resolution/fps patch for 19.99. And what's sad is that I'd probably pay it for something like Bloodborne. They're not gonna give up the remaster money, but they will look silly putting them out when the hardware is fully capable of running older games natively.
Many X1X BC games run like remastered/nearly remastered. This is a pleasant surprise over re-re-repurchasing the games that have been re-re-remastered on PS4, even if sometimes it is done well (though many times they are lazy uprez jobs). I am also looking for new gen systems to eliminate this stupid purchase the game for a 3rd time stuff.

The PS3 original was a tragedy.
Even if the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X does 1440p, it doesn't matter much since it's better than the PS3 and X360 originals.
As long as fps is consistent and loads fast, I think most people will be happy.

If an R9 Fury can run 4K, the X1X can co it too. And a PS4 PRO should be able to push 2560*2160, thus only needing to upscale one axis.

There was a day one patch for Vanquish (to fix minor hiccups, and random crashes). So I would not doubt a patch for both titles to have more enhancements soon. Probably had a time crunch. No telling how many people worked on this remaster project.
