You perfectly touched on every important point regarding the game; from the gameplay and its basis of Witch Time, to the story, the characters and even the music. At the same time you made sure to reference and credit the developers whenever possible. I honestly think this is the best Bayonetta retrospective video on RUclips.
Regardless of what sex/gender/sexuality/religion/class/etc. you identify with, I think we can all learn something from Bayonetta's stylish and contagious confidence. She really shows us how life is too hectic and short to not be ourselves, put our best self forward, and do what we want.
Moon Moon I mean most of those aren’t big problems, and if that “peak” you mentioned only comes with like 400 hours of play, then is it really a bad thing if it lasts that long?
12:27 - Fun fact: The DMC "lock on, hold a direction, press jump" button combo to dodge _still works in this game._ This is significant because when you get the Beast Within later on, dodging twice in a row will suddenly cause you to transform (disrupting certain strategies like dodging circles around an enemy to safely get behind them), but by using the DMC button combo, you can dodge all you want without accidentally transforming!
You can also dodge out of Beast Within, which if I remember correctly, also resets your dodge limit of 5 in a row, the 5th one being where Bayo would flip really high without gaining much distance, and pause in place for a moment. So if you do it in a specific manner, you can use a few dodges in a row, go into panther form, and then dodge out of it again to have more dodges. Helps out a fair bit since you can also choose to do an attack out of panther mode if you're going for higher combo scores. Plus, another iirc moment, I think dodging out of it propels Bayo forward pretty quickly, which can be good for getting out of the way for last minute evading. Such a great game.
@@Waffersforever The 5 dodge limit ending in a sexy pose was done to prevent people from cheesing the game by trying to dodge absolutely everything and force players to actually learn to time their dodges. Changing forms to crow or panther and then going back will reset the dodge limit. It is funny though that instead of just having her stop dodging after 5 for a cooldown or something they just made her do something sexy and lay there looking like "Oh, do you wanna hit me? Come get some"

@@evan_sunprince haha. I know. But an animator should have the tools to manipulate bodies in order to transform one into another easily. Maybe I'm expecting too much.
I remember when i played Bayonetta for the first time. I had 19 years old and wasn't a "videogame" person. However when i saw her design on the Internet i was like "This looks badass, what's this". Played the game and fell IN LOVE with it. Then Bayonetta 3 got announced and said to myself "all right, i guess i'm a videogame person now. 1 Nintendo Switch and 1 copy of Bayonetta 2, please". And here we are, Bayonetta 1 being my favorite game so far. It was a great introduction to the world of videogames for me and it will always have a place in my heart. All the feelings that it brought me came back while watching this video. You did such a great job, and i'm glad you made it. Just wow. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Sometimes when I'm down, I'll look up either the Bayonetta 1 or 2 opening. Just a nice reminder that you can tackle your problems with glamour and flamboyance.
I know what you mean, games and characters like bayonetta have helped me deal with anxiety. Sometimes, I put on the song "Moon River" and imagine myself as Bayo, slaying the metaphorical demons or should I say, angels, in my life.
"Bayo is so powerful in every faucet of her being. She's so well written, all of her dialogue hits." so well put!! I love this character so much. I also really like how you described the sexual aspect to her. Bayonetta is different than a lot of female characters in that regard. She doesn't feel objectified and it doesn't feel demeaning or gross. Bayo's sexuality feels powerful, and it's so nice to have that in a female protagonist instead of the sex-doll-fanservice-object that female characters are often used as in games.
You can’t objectify a fictional character so you are just projecting. You like bayonetta so it doesn’t feel like objectifying, but you don’t like some other characters so they feel objectified. Not that they actually are objectified. It’s also extremely rare that female characters end up like that. And bayonetta is one of those, she is kamiya’s fetish character.
Found this video from a channel I haven't seen before in my recommendations. I had a good time! I particularly like and agreed with your take on Bayonettas sexuality and femininity. As an asexual person, fanservice always felt alienating to me. There would be something enjoyable happening, and then it would be interrupted by something that is of no interest to me. Particularly when the fanservice was of a character not even in a sexual situation but being leered at by the camera. But, Bayonetta didn't feel like that. It felt like she owned it. It became an actual aspect of the character. And that made it enjoyable to me. Even if I couldn't appreciate it on a sexual level, it could still be an enjoyable or funny character moment. I laughed so much at this games sheer over-the-topness, sexiness included. It was so pleasant to have something openly sexual that was enjoyable to me because of that rather than in spite of that for the first time in my life. It's something I wish more artists would do - make it part of the character. Don't write it as forced upon the character, write it as their choice. Don't put in an achievement for looking up a girls shirt or make a pervert character force her to wear a skeevy outfit, don't try to justify forcing her to do it by saying she breathes through her skin. Make her poses and clothing her choice, write her with that in mind. It would feel lot less unpleasant and tacked on. Also, *yes*, the Bayonneta cover of Fly Me To The Moon is so good! Damn, I want to replay this again, it's been ages. Anyway, neat video, I'll definitely have a look at some more of your work!
As fun and interesting as the side characters are in this game, in the sequel they graduate and evolve into an awesome, almost Scooby-Doo-Crew style ensemble cast. Luka is my favorite, though.
I actually wrote about the Dodge Offset and it’s usability for one of my Uni essays. Ended up getting a very high grade on it. It’s such a cool mechanic and once I figured it out how to use it I fell in love.
Top Japanese developers seem to have so much more artistic integrity which stands out in these days of live services and games built as vehicles for monitisation
Bayonetta really defined a lot for what video games could do and how a story could be told. I was 12 when it came out. 22 years old now, 10 years later after the release and it still had such a big impact on my life.

I really love how you review any kind of game by studying the background of the games and really play the games fully and repeat it once or twice. I would really like to hear your view on the last of us series.
Man, Kamiya retweeted my all-platinum run a couple years ago; the I can feel the love alllll over this game and I really liked this video. Please, if you haven't, buy this game and expect to enjoy it for a loong time. Bayo 2 is great too, but, its definitely...different.
The music is crazy good, I too actually have the game's version of Fly Me to the Moon pop into my head and I start humming it. Just the whole thing about how powerful and in control of her sexuality that Bayonetta is.
Something I always found weird was torture attacks were actually easier to finish the button mash on the Xbox 360 version. When I went on to play the steam version I was amazed that it just felt impossible to finish some of them. Maybe a glitch with the transfer to a higher frame rate?
I would love to see you cover the Onimusha series! It slways seemed like the perfect half way point between Resident Evil and Devil May Cry in terms of gameplay.
You know, the color palette and filters surely didn’t age well, but I always liked that thematically. Especially retroactively looking at it next to Bayo2. All the muted colors of the angels and environments give a dull, church sermon like vibe, where as Bayo2’s bombastic colors give fighting demons this total opposite club or party feeling. It’s a nice duality that added this really fun incidental context to me.
So this video came out at the right time. I was thinking about playing Bayo 1 again and I saw this on my yt feed. I love the game, it is fantastic. The story, the characters, it is so fun, enjoyable and challenging that you can spend a lot of time in it. Then I remember I was suscribed to a godlike Bayo player Yoshesque and I started to watch her vids again bc she is really really good at Bayo 1 & 2 and I notice that she has not upload any videos in a long time. I wanna thank you cause you inspire me to play the game again even more and I hope you keep uploading videos. I love your voice and RE as much as you do. I miss Yoshesque vids but luckily I have yours. Much love
The only thing that I would add to this very well organized presentation; Bayonetta is pure joy in a world with way, way too many grim, growly people growling grimly. Even when getting absolutely wrecked, I can not stop smiling. It truly does feel like Bayonetta is here for the same reason we are--to have some fun in a video game.
Bayo had this high luxury of being able to draw from 3 DMC games and GODHAND to create itself. You can DEFINITELY see which notes had a star beside them
Sue, you did the review of this game so much justice! It's so in-depth with comprehensive details given, yet everything is easily digestible; not to mention, your thorough exploration of the more not well known features or abilites of the game as well, it's just *chefs kiss* beautiful! Wonderful review, well done!
I remember when I first fell in love with this game ,It was unlike anything I had ever played before. At first, it was so hard to find and I had everyone from my ex wife all the way down to my mom looking for it. When I finally got my hands on it and slipped it into my PS3 for the first time, I was awe struck by how dope it was. It's not a game that you want to play in front of everyone though 😉 especially if people don't understand anime or things of that nature. But it became one of my all-time favorite games that provided me with tons of memories ♥️ it impacted me so much, that I created my own version of " fly me to the moon" for my last album. " Shameless plug" lol
I’m a game dev in the making and this video was not only insightful from that point of view in realising things their team did that I subconsciously enjoy but reconfirmed my love for the game and the series. Really enjoyed and appreciated this video from a technical and fan view!

At the same time you made sure to reference and credit the developers whenever possible. I honestly think this is the best Bayonetta retrospective video on RUclips.
im glad they fought tooth and nail for the glasses, they've become iconic and my absolute favorite part of Bayonetta's design
Regardless of what sex/gender/sexuality/religion/class/etc. you identify with, I think we can all learn something from Bayonetta's stylish and contagious confidence. She really shows us how life is too hectic and short to not be ourselves, put our best self forward, and do what we want.
Don't ask me why, but I never played either Bayonetta games but I really want to. This shit seems mad fun.
I recommend! It’s tough as nails tho!
Moon Moon I mean most of those aren’t big problems, and if that “peak” you mentioned only comes with like 400 hours of play, then is it really a bad thing if it lasts that long?
I know the feeling. I never played the games either but I really really want to.
@fuckingmatiu I will. Once things get settled on my end, I will finally get both and play them
Moon Moon you did not reach the combat peak in 12 hours dude the game is deeper than the Mariana Trench

I love that this game really does have "You learn something new every time you go back to it", even ten years after its release!
Come get some"
You can dodge continuously without transforming simply by timing correctly
I had no idea of this :o thanks a lot because I'll definitely give it a try
as a animator I love Platinium's combat animations.
omg actress that mocap Bayo is very short, so retargetting animations for in game model was probably pain in the ass...
she is not short. She is fun-sized
I remember the corridor digital crew rambling about this too. Is it really that bad?
@@DerAykac it shouldn't be. Sounds just like prejudice against short people. Hahahaha.
@@samucabrabo I think the reason it would be an issue. Is bease a short woman would have very different proportions to a fashion magazine body type.

Welcome to the club... gamer!

You two ... i like you two.
I sometimes just listen to “bury the light” from DMC and go through any tough situations i am having.

"Bayo is so powerful in every faucet of her being. She's so well written, all of her dialogue hits."
so well put!!
Really love the "those glasses ain't coming off" line 😅🤣
It's like "Nah uh Bitch, don't you even" lol

I like how witch time is such a distinct yet incredible feature that dozens of modern games, even in the west are using it.
Regarding the "secret stuff", I still remember that moment I found out your sword can actually shoot a freakin' laser beam.

As fun and interesting as the side characters are in this game, in the sequel they graduate and evolve into an awesome, almost Scooby-Doo-Crew style ensemble cast.

This just might be the BEST video game review/video essay I HAVE EVER SEEN. Perfectly descriptive, very interesting, explains the controls effectively, and talks about mechanics in a way that makes me want to play Right Now! Thanks Suzi!!!

They were always that stingy. Hell when Big Red Button were working on Sonic Boom, Sega literally screwed them over by forcing them to change the entire plot and structure of the game to fit to their standards.

I absolutely ADORE the artwork for the thumbnail
