Bayonetta, as a character, is so in control of her appearance and such a lover of fashion that she literally completely changes her style between the first game and second! What other character has done that?! To completely change how your main character looks from one game to another is just unheard of in gaming due to things like branding and merch, but Bayonetta is SUCH an in control character, that she even overrides the branding of her own game!
I think part of what makes it work is that it still very much feels like her. The outfit is totally different while still sharing enough with the original that it's plausible that Bayo has both in her closet
This video made me realise more than I did before how many similarities Bayonetta has with Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure! From the influences from fashion magazines and models to the insane campiness and outfits
The main character being a tall sexy character whose dark hair blends into their clothing that can stop time, summon an entity who's main attack involves rapid punching, and like to pose
YES YES EXACTLY and also there’s this manga by this former fashion designer (I think I’m getting it wrong) I can’t remember the name of it but she has two famous series and it’s main characters are also highly stylized and of course fashionable. Every outfit suited each character’s personality and journey throughout the mangas.
LMAO thank you!! I'm proud of myself for coming up with a good thumb idea, but HotCyder brought it to life for me since I am a big dumb dumb with photoshop!
Bayonetta is a “Gesamtkunstwerk”: conjugation of music, theater, singing, dance and plastic arts, in a single work of art. Shes a misunderstood work of art. I totally love her!
To be frank, I didn't know what to think of Bayonetta until now. Was she a character made to appeal to men or to make fun of such approach? Now I think it is both - as you said in the video she takes pride in her looks and she clearly enjoys the attention. People just like looking good and if I had a chance to make myself into an extravagant alluring god-like figure, I think I would. I think Bayonetta may be one of a few examples of an oversexualized character that isn't harmful to the popular depiction of beauty, mostly due to the overexaggeration and depth of the character. Great video, this one.
Bayonetta is a bait and switch. She _looks_ like your typical videogame cheesecake waifu made only with the corporate mission to prey on horny guys but is actually a complex and compelling character in her own right who is comfortable with her sexuality and is confident in herself and her abilities, which curiously also attracts guys, and girls, and just about anyone. Simply put: we come for the sexy figure and suggestive demeanor, stay for her character
I think you got one thing wrong. She wasn't made to appeal to men. She was made appealing.... Period. She was made to be a sexy woman. And just because a sexy woman exists, it doesn't mean she's sexy for men. She's sexy. That's it. It's not FOR anyone. And even if it was its definitely not just for men given how much high fashion and overall appeal her appearance has.
@@GeneTonics Yes, I will admit, she is sexy as hell and she is now one of my female video game crushes for how confident and skilled she is and her character? Oof, that's a gay panic waiting to happen..
To me Bayonetta has never felt sexualised in the same way as, say, Lara Croft, because it feels like Bayonetta is in on the joke. She’s chosen to make herself appear that way very deliberately and it’s done with a wink and a nod I realise it’s completely insane to say that about a fictional character with no actual agency of their own but I still think it’s true.
Huh, I kind of always assumed the hair-as-clothes thing was baked into Bayonetta's design from the start, not that it came after realizing that having 40 foot long hair on a character would make for a completely unreadable silhouette. I also didn't realize that Ikumi Nakamura worked on Bayonetta. I'M LEARNING SO MANY THINGS TODAY. Great vid!
I am so intrigued with the way the angels look. They are neither attractive nor ugly just... Godly and divine. Some of them scared me though not gonna lie
Did you know that classical marble statues weren't always plain white marble? Used to be painted, a very long time ago. But history is... Strange. There was even an active effort at some points more recently to scrub the tiny fragments of color off, as many of them still have tiny flecks of paint clinging to them, just so worn away they're practically invisible to the naked eye.
Yes! Yes they were. Greco-roman period "marble" being painted was actually known since the early 1800s when like OP said, they found samples of paint on some of the frescoes and statues. In fact the vast majority of the mediterranean was painted gorgeous shades of turquoise, rust, terracotta, peach and red. Which you can actually get an idea of by seeing historical districts near open water like in Malta or Sicily, those very same natural pigments exist there to this day. In fact one of my favorite historical facts is that those paintings and statues of heracles are actually painted black or dark brown as it was believed that heracles had phoenician ancestry.
That is indeed true. Many are not aware of this fact. Even the Acropolis of Athens was at it's original state painted in vibrant colors that with time faded away. It was not plain white like we see today.
Or fade away through time. A marble standing in the sun atop a spire will remain the same for eons. It will get moldy and grimy and dusty and its paint job will go away snd all that remains is the marble that was covered by paint
This is easily my favourite video you've done. I'd never actually considered the Italian feel of the game's setting as the connecting point between its camp fashion and its use of Christian iconography, and you tie it all back to the Sontag essay really convincingly. Excellent work!
9:57 another thing that i find very very interesting about the differences between Jeanne and Bayonetta in terms of fashion is that Jeanne's signature red outfit in both bayonetta 1 and 2 play a part in how she controls. during character dodge animations here ruclips.net/video/yhwRGyHMkvY/видео.html you can see that Cereza puts more emphasis on using her whole body as a dodge and rolls off the ground in a curled position which is a bit quicker while Jeanne prefers to use a more acrobatic approach by using her legs as a vantage point to avoid touching the ground as much as possible. this was explained by hideki kamiya as Jeanne protecting her clothing from getting ripped or dirty because it's actual real expensive clothing she bought herself from an in universe fashion brand named *D'arc* which is a reference to Jeanne's name being part of the french (and correct) pronunciation of joan of arc every corner of this game oozes care, thought and STYLE i love it so much!!!!

Cereza’s mere existence is captivating, she never misses to impress her fans. Thank you, for your wonderful work.
I have three uncle's who are celebate priests and they love bayonetta. Since they play it on weekends or just about any whatchamacallit blasphemous games on Nintendo switch. Well maybe because they are still in their 40s and late 30s. People always have that misconception that they are strict and stuff maybe its just the old people or the crazy ones and most of it are just silent criticisms that are easy to ignore
Bayonetta was and still is my favorite childhood game, and honestly her character and style was a huge inspiration growing up, even though I dressed like I never wanted to be seen, it's still a great inspiration. Now that I'm older planning on going back to play this all over again, might even buy a switch to play 2 and 3 later on.
In a similar vain to devil may cry I love games that fully embrace their own style and energy 100%. Not in an ego centric way (e.g self serious David cage games) but in how the characters and story have this bold confidence like it dosent care about how it looks and it's just having fun. Let's just hope Bayonetta 3 keeps this mentality in check
I've heard the term "camp" all my life, and thought I had a general idea of what it meant. But my understanding is incredibly deeper after seeing you demonstrate it in terms of Bayonetta.
I've no idea what sort of witchcraft landed this in my recommendations, but I'm very grateful for it. This video was one of the most fun and illuminating I've seen on Bayonetta. It delights me to no end to see that this game, which was somewhat under performing at the time of its release, continues to find more and more love as time goes on. It has truly aged like fine wine, like a luxuriant delicacy meant not merely to be consumed, but to be _savored._
Bayonetta has my eternal love. She’s my Queen. 😍 I love how Kamiya insisted that she wear glasses. No matter what, he wouldn’t take no for an answer when it came to them.
Just finished Bayonetta 2 so seeing this in my feed is a treat. You really pinpointed exactly what clicks for me with this game. It's probably the only time I've gone into the gallery to admire the concept art and character models after playing it. Another thing that enhances the camp for me is the kooky soundtrack which I can only describe as "ethereal jazz". This game acheives a truly impossible aesthetic.
Bayonetta’s proportions, her impractical but striking appearance and her distinctive poses all being taken from fashion lines and magazines are, coincidentally, also what makes the characters, art style, fight scenes and general aesthetic of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures look the way it does.
Bayonetta is one of my favorite franchises of all time. I have seen plenty of videos talking about its excellent gameplay, but this is the first I've seen analyzing it's Art Direction. A pleasure to watch, it only deepens my love for the character and this game!
Can we just appreciate how amazing it was that Nintendo - a very family friendly company - took Bayonetta under their wing when no one would license the sequel and then did not tone her down at all. Even making her playable in Smash Bros. Bayonetta 2 was amazing and I'm so excited for Bayo 3...
What you mentioned at the beginning resonates so much with me, like one of my favorite games ever was Rule of Rose, I was a big fan watching videos, listening to the music and fantasizing as a kid the whole idea of a satanic monarchy ruled by kids, which when I finally got the chance to play it I realized how different was the actual story to what i thought, I liked it even when it was way darker than what I thought it would be making up for how limited was the gameplay... Bayonetta is one game I haven't play yet I've been obsessed for years just due the Aesthetics and world building and don't make me go over the music!
This is the type of video I like to listen to as I work on other things, but I didn't even make it halfway before my work was minimized and this was full screen. Amazing break down of one of my favorite action games.
I am currently writing a term paper on Bayonetta and I automatically stumbled upon Sontags Essay and the concept of camp to describe the style of that special game. What a coincidence your vid dropped, will be good help for my analysis. Love your choice of topics :)
The art is beautiful and the music is pretty cool as well! I love that you talked about how biblical angels were actually pretty strange, and that Bayonetta translated that into some powerful imagery with the claws, wings, teeth, and their huge booming voices. Such a cool video :)
Thanks for the great video focusing on the design of such a great character. All the small details on her costume just make it. I love the incorporation of the clock pendant to tie in Witch time. The moon crescents on the tip of her straps to tie in with the witching hour. The red streamers that have 'Bayonetta' printed on them in a repeating fashion to show she's a little conceited, but in a very low key way. It's truly inspiring to see how much thought is put into details that may not even be noticed.
Just seeing images of this game again brought up so many clear memories of playing this game years ago, which for me is a testament to how effective these aesthetics really are. This deep dive into these extra layers was fascinating. I need to play this series again.
Bayonetta is my Queen and it's nice to see that people still talk about her. Edit: The hair magic is also a nod to real european witch myth in which they were said to use their hair for spells.
The same can be said for why I love the Raimi Spider-Man movies, even if the last one wasn’t a zinger... the campy feeling and style to the film making and writing keeps me coming back to it every few weeks. Though I guess the other reason I adore them is because of how they really stand out compared to modern super hero films with the Dark Knight of setting the more cinematic and gritty trend for a while, which apparently a lot of other companies took notes for what would become the status quo. It’s identity and editing keep them all from feeling different to one another.
I always loved Batonettas design every ounce of her expressed confidence in herself even with all the things against her that confidence made her attractive instead of being designed attractive for the sake of it i feel that the designers put great detail and thought in constructing her to make her a fun and an iconic chracter to play like any other but with the bayo 3 trailer out im a little surprised by the new style they put her in my first thought was that its leaning twords a more cute idol inspired design its a big jump from mature style with short hair too short dress long braids and I say idol because its set in a modern japan but Bayonetta was all about pushing boundaries and experimenting with style so im not sad about the new style it feels inspired and that aligns with her chratcer and style always differs in opinion
This video has really brought clarity to my taste in all sorts of media, I can now see how much I enjoy camp in these different areas. No wonder I enjoy the Bayonetta games so much
Something that never fails to amaze me is how they went through so much looks (looking for the most part, really average) and somehow managed to choose the downright best one of every of em
I love all analytical videos about Bayo! This video being solely on the game's fashion and style just goes to show how much thought and love was put into this game
The angels in Bayonetta are much more biblically accurate than our modern rendition of Beautiful Blonde Gender Ambiguous Athletic Winged people. No wonder the first thing they say when they appear to you is "don't be scared"
As one who loves Devil May Cry, Bayonetta will always be a special series to me! This style is old school and I love it!! It's unique and slick! Thank you for making this love letter for the game! Great vid!
ever since i got into this game, ive loved it for its ridiculous elements and shamelessness, if thats the right word for it. but i didnt know why specifically. this video is exactly what i was thinking, albeit without having any way to express it before watching it. great video and editing, really loved it
I remember watching Bayonetta 2 gameplay (PewDiePie edition) and absolutely loved it. Gameplay, scenery, costume and combat, also story is so crazy. I'm a fan of the franchise now 😎
As a gameplay first person who loves the game because of its stellar mechanics, I loved learning about all those aspects of the game that completely flew over my head. Great video, and thank you
honestly you talking about how empowering Bayonetta's confidence and combat capability is reminded me just how uncomfortable the second game made me at times. it took me ages to realise that you basically never see Bayonetta hurt or lose a fight in the first game, but it happens a Lot in the second especially near the end. i hope the third one swings back towards the 'catches a bus with one hand without even trying' style-i don't WANT to see Bayonetta in peril, i WANT to see her throw a satellite at a god!
This was an awesome watch, it's always great to see somebody else gush over concept art and just the style of a game that has so so much to offer. It's the kind of thing that is impossible to overlook, but there's so much more to see if you take the time to take it all in. Bayonetta especially to me feels like it's a rare example of a game being enhanced by PS3-era graphics, with the kinda over the top particle effects and some things just blown out with bloom, environments that are simultaneously super detailed and low-poly; it feels like the whole team knew what they could get away with and how they could work with the constraints instead of feeling confined within them to bring their art to life, if that makes sense. Anyways, stellar job as always, looking forward to future vids!
Found this today, amazing video, I love bayonetta and it's nice to understand all the references that helped creating this amazing universe filled with cool characters 😆 thanks for making this video
Loved the amount of research you put into this, was great to see so much insight into one of my favourite characters and her world. I really need to buy those art books.

Bayonetta will forever be a favorite. Never have a character made me feel empowered until her. 🥰
This is the type of video I like to listen to as I work on other things, but I didn't even make it halfway before my work was minimized and this was full screen. Amazing break down of one of my favorite action games.
Well, I've got some new appreciation for Bayonetta.
Thanks to Bayonetta 3, I now headcanon that all of those unused concept designs are just alternate reality versions of Bayonetta.
I am currently writing a term paper on Bayonetta and I automatically stumbled upon Sontags Essay and the concept of camp to describe the style of that special game. What a coincidence your vid dropped, will be good help for my analysis. Love your choice of topics :)
Link please?
I didn't knew the word Angelology exists, but it is one of my favourite words now. So fun to say :)
it took me a couple takes when doing the voice over LOL, but very satisfying to say! 😊
Fully expected a joke, April fools video. Instead i got a well researched, very well done video. Keep up the good work and have a nice day.
where the hell did the art direction go for bayonetta 3 😭
The only part of the game where I felt that I was in a world where witches lived was Cairo with the temples dedicated to the demons.
Love how you demand such a high level of production value for your videos.
Skyward sword’s style is definitely one of my favorites
The art is beautiful and the music is pretty cool as well! I love that you talked about how biblical angels were actually pretty strange, and that Bayonetta translated that into some powerful imagery with the claws, wings, teeth, and their huge booming voices. Such a cool video :)
On the cursed day of deception she brings us great video blessings
The greatest deceit of all! Truth!
Bayonetta along with El Shaddia are two XBOX 360 era games that are inscribed on my brain. Love the vid
Just seeing images of this game again brought up so many clear memories of playing this game years ago, which for me is a testament to how effective these aesthetics really are. This deep dive into these extra layers was fascinating. I need to play this series again.
This is my first time ever meeting bayonetta and oh my goooood, she’s such a gorgeous piece of art
Bayonetta is my Queen and it's nice to see that people still talk about her.
Edit: The hair magic is also a nod to real european witch myth in which they were said to use their hair for spells.
The second I heard you mention Sontag I knew you were gonna know your stuff. Great vid. Bayonetta is a modern camp MASTERPIECE.
Wow I never noticed that there is demonic script on her outfit, I thought it was just the seams, thank you for that revelation
Never played Bayonetta, yet watching this video is still entertaining!
Play it
I always loved Batonettas design every ounce of her expressed confidence in herself even with all the things against her that confidence made her attractive instead of being designed attractive for the sake of it i feel that the designers put great detail and thought in constructing her to make her a fun and an iconic chracter to play like any other but with the bayo 3 trailer out im a little surprised by the new style they put her in my first thought was that its leaning twords a more cute idol inspired design its a big jump from mature style with short hair too short dress long braids and I say idol because its set in a modern japan but Bayonetta was all about pushing boundaries and experimenting with style so im not sad about the new style it feels inspired and that aligns with her chratcer and style always differs in opinion
Bayonetta is one of my favourite game series. I’m glad I got to play one of her games at least. You did a beautiful description
This video has really brought clarity to my taste in all sorts of media, I can now see how much I enjoy camp in these different areas. No wonder I enjoy the Bayonetta games so much
Just finished a commission of bayonetta last night and this pops up 😍😍
Something that never fails to amaze me is how they went through so much looks (looking for the most part, really average) and somehow managed to choose the downright best one of every of em
Great vid!
This channel just keeps giving me more reasons to love videogames.
Will you do Bayonetta 2? You succinctly put in words I can't describe on why I like the aesthetics of the game. :)
I'm so thankful that RUclips recommended this to me!
This is such an incredibly well-made video.
Same
That’s what I love about the games so much. It’s so unique and extravagant!
I didn’t want this video to end. This is the reason Bayonetta is such a strong IP. It has such a strong identity and style
Really good video essay. A+
ever since i got into this game, ive loved it for its ridiculous elements and shamelessness, if thats the right word for it. but i didnt know why specifically. this video is exactly what i was thinking, albeit without having any way to express it before watching it. great video and editing, really loved it
I've been watching your videos ever since your video about the fashion in Bloodborne, and I have to say that this is my favorite of yours so far!
that was a perfect summary of JOJOs bizarre adventure! :D
Beautifully composed video essay. Subbed.
Bayo is so iconic. I've always loved how she can morph her hair into her outfit.
This is an Haute Couture/ met gala in a gaming form, and I’M LIVING FOR IT
I remember watching Bayonetta 2 gameplay (PewDiePie edition) and absolutely loved it. Gameplay, scenery, costume and combat, also story is so crazy. I'm a fan of the franchise now 😎
Thank you for doing our camp goddess Bayo utter, absolute justice 💖😭✨
1:51 i literally hear the words: *"i did not hit her! It's bullshit! I did NOT... Oh hi Mark."*
YOOO the aubrey beardsley shoutout! love their work so much!
Hearing you talk about Bayonetta makes me wish you'll do a Devil May Cry video in the future.
Ooooh
Art Director: So, how extra do you want Beyo's family line to be?
Kamiya: _Yes._
This video is a camp masterpiece!
I've LOVED this video as a big Bayonetta fan that I am!! Would you make a second part analysing the style of Bayonetta 2?
As a gameplay first person who loves the game because of its stellar mechanics, I loved learning about all those aspects of the game that completely flew over my head.
Great video, and thank you
No one talks about fashion in video games, so it makes me really happy that someone recognizes it outside of Movies and TV shows.
honestly you talking about how empowering Bayonetta's confidence and combat capability is reminded me just how uncomfortable the second game made me at times. it took me ages to realise that you basically never see Bayonetta hurt or lose a fight in the first game, but it happens a Lot in the second especially near the end.
i hope the third one swings back towards the 'catches a bus with one hand without even trying' style-i don't WANT to see Bayonetta in peril, i WANT to see her throw a satellite at a god!
Well... How did you feel about Bayo ?
💖 I'm more excited for Bayonetta 3 now...
This is so, so wonderfully done and helped me love an already awesome game so much more. Brilliant work!
This video and channel are why RUclips is such an incredible place tbh
words cannot describe how good this video is. i just- *chefs kiss*
Wow, what an amazing video! A fantastic analysis. This was a great deeper insight into the game's style. Props!
