As someone who barely ever played any castlevania game before, this videogame is probably one of the most fun I've played in recent times. I really hope bloodstained becomes a series.
If you have a ps4, you should get the CastleVania pack that comes with Symphony of the Night and its prequel, Rondo of Blood. The latter game is not a MetroidVania, but rather a classic style CastleVania game. It's, in my opinion, the best of the classic series, and I think was the last before the franchise shifted to Metroidvania.
If you want, you could try bloodstained curse of the moon. It is a prequel game that was released last year as a part of the kickstarter. It is an 8 bit game that is more of a spiritual successor to castlevania 3 dracula's curse. I highly recommend it if you want a bit more for bloodstained content.
Bloodstained is pretty much how a kickstarter funded game should be and IGA prove Konami wrong in the most epic way possible. Plus, the negative feedback made IGA and ArtPlay strive to refine the game's graphics drastically or else this game end up as a disaster just like what happened to Mighty No.9. As an avid fan of the Castlevania series, this game is a masterpiece IMO. There are some minor flaws but it's still a great game nonetheless. Great review, Sue. 👌🏻

A friend of mine just got done with a video for Bloodstained. I hadn't played the game in awhile so I was a bit rusty when we stayed playing the game while filming. I came back to this video after I started a new playthrough. Didn't get to say it before, but great video and glad you enjoyed the game as well.
Dracula is in the public domain, so theoretically they could have made this even more like Castlevania as long as the left out castlevania-specific characters like the Belmonts.
This game is amazing. I’m so glad I trusted in Igarashi-San. This man is a genius. Such a great game.. yes some of the story & writing are a bit odd but ultimately it’s a great game. So many different play styles and builds you can make with all the shards and abilities. All the hairstyles & ways you can make Miriam your own! It’s astounding. Go out and buy this game!
Is it?real question. I still hear plenty of complaints. I ended up getting the ps4 version last week because I'm not loaded and couldn't risk wasting cash.
Hmm, this take is bold and spicy, with hints of earth tone, yet not entirely unwelcome. Though the weird drawing mechanic in Dawn can bite my ass. I don't have the coordination for that sort of thing... especially on emulator.
I am so glad I played the handheld castlevania games before this. Thanks to a friend of mine, I was able to experience those games along with some other titles, bloodstained was on my list of games this year to get and I wasn't disappointed. Plus we have more content coming down the road too, all the more reason to return and slay the creatures of the night! Well done with the video here, Hunter.
I just flat didn't know, and wouldn't have known about it if not for Yu Suzuki. Ever since the 7th Continent and Evil Dead debacles I've grown beyond disillusioned with Kickstarter, something that really had a lot of potential for new artists and creators. If I hadn't heard that they were doing one for Shenmue III I would have never even heard of it. The reason I didn't buy it was because my other choice was Samurai Shodown, which I don't regret *at all* and these types of games just don't last me as long as a fighting game which I will play until I change systems. I still want to get it (For me, there's really no such thing as being "too much like Symphony of the night or Order of Ecclesia.) =3
Great review, I really appreciate the context you establish, for example the creators segments, and the history of Castlevania in general. I still play Castlevania Symphony of the Night every few years, but I am enjoying Bloodstained so much... I could see it being the game I revisit every few years instead, it feels so special and lovingly crafted. I also appreciate this game restores some trust and goodwill in the kickstarter process, because I still think that, its a nice way to get certain types of games made/funded. Also, somewhat randomly, but I want to see Iga cameo in What We Do in the Shadows. He'd be great in that!
@@Yanikun I played on PC too but the only bug I encountered was with Gebel. He glitched out of his boss room once. Other than that, I had no issues. Guess I got lucky? Or maybe there were differences between the Steam and GOG versions? I got the game on GOG.
Couple things I thought needed a bit more explanation to an otherwise perfect video: (0:41) Metroid-vania games have specific power-ups, generally a "double jump" for example, required for further exploration / completion. The tutorial (boat) level further emphasizes this with an inaccessible area (the teleport / "fast travel" room). Also worth mentioning that you can place markers on the map so you can come back to these inaccessible locations that you find; a very user-friendly feature for any metroid-vania game. (7:40) Food consumed gives permanent stat buffs. Worth mentioning that the stat increases are permanent to each unique food consumed (not just temporary), also recovers a portion of health or mana depending on the item. (8:54) You're not required to find the books to unlock skills, they work the same they did in SotN where you just input the combination after meeting the requirements i.e. have a specific weapon equipped / mana requirements; you can also master these "techniques" to be used on similar weapon types; unlock all the katana skills and your Miriam can be just like Zangetsu! Props to you calling out the "spinning bird kick", I don't think most people know that's a homage to Street Fighter. (11:15) Bosses do have weaknesses based on different abilities used, for example: the "lethargy" directional shard is extremely effective against the Bathin "speed demon / reflect ray" boss. The game does not tell you this; it is something you can learn and adds even more depth. There is a brief mention that "certain weapons work better than others" but nothing saying that monsters do have specific weaknesses that can be exploited almost like a Megaman game.
This is the second time youtuve has recommend your videos. Your depth of knowledge, perspective and calm, soothing voice/delivery earned you a new subscriber. Great stuff, looking forward to more.

I'm so happy to hear that it has turned out so well. I'm very excited to play it. It looks beautiful and I can't wait for all the surprises to come. (I skipped the middle of the video to preserve the mystique, but I'll come back and watch it through after I've completed the game.)

I honestly didn't think Iga could do it. But he made a proper SOTN sequel. (I know the GBA ones were good but they felt like a slight step down) I was so happy playing through this game. I completed the game last week and I already miss the Castle and the gameplay. 😭
Just finished watching I absolutely loved it. You pretty much perfectly explained your points, and I could feel your passion for the Metroidvania genre, and that was great ! Man am I glad to see that Michiru Yamane was back for Bloodstained. I can't get over this game's OST, i'm humming it all the time. The Tower of Twin Dragons's theme might be the one I like the most. Also, me and my friends have been calling Zangetsu Weeb Snake ever since we knew David freaking Hayter was going to voice him. He really fits him well, I love how much work was put behind that game. These years of waiting have been totally worth it.
Bloodstained is one of the greatest games I ever played. In some regards it even surpasses Symphony of the Night (couldn't beat SotN's music and artstyle though, that's impossible)

I came back to this video after I started a new playthrough. Didn't get to say it before, but great video and glad you enjoyed the game as well.
Dracula is in the public domain, so theoretically they could have made this even more like Castlevania as long as the left out castlevania-specific characters like the Belmonts.
Happy to see your channel getting bigger and better
This game is amazing. I’m so glad I trusted in Igarashi-San. This man is a genius. Such a great game.. yes some of the story & writing are a bit odd but ultimately it’s a great game. So many different play styles and builds you can make with all the shards and abilities. All the hairstyles & ways you can make Miriam your own! It’s astounding. Go out and buy this game!
Dude, how have I not seen this channel before? This is such a well done video.
My favorite shard is UpBeat Heat. Rock out while setting everything on fire. Top tier against bosses.
I often find flying dagger effective. Especially if I'm Inverted.
The most effective is Void Ray.
IchbinX You will really like summon hell hound then
@@homra7361
That's the most powerful red shard. Fast, extremly strong and huge. With infinite mana, this shard becomes over powered.
I played this recently and absolutely LOVED IT! I didn't know I needed this kind of game until I was playing it! Great vid, as always!
I’m just so happy this didn’t become another Mighty No. 9
Me too
Whats that
@@misterturkturkle trust us, it's best you don't know about that failure of a game
@Brendan Lewis you spelled troll rongji
That guitar riff. Every time I hear it, I am brought back to fond memories of a game that is still worth my time.
Vampires who wear cowboy hats are such an aesthetic though. Very.... sexy.
This is by far the best bloodstained review on YT. Great job! :)
Future Viewer reporting in: They parched away most of the Switch port’s problems! Now it’s a solid choice for portable players.
That's great! Now I can get it without a problem
Is it?real question. I still hear plenty of complaints. I ended up getting the ps4 version last week because I'm not loaded and couldn't risk wasting cash.
@@zgmf-x19ainfinitejustice28 I can only speak for myself. The patched Switch port gave me no problems except for not being as pretty.
I disagree. It still crashes a lot, the towers slow down the game and the game takes way too long to reload after dying
Oh god i can listen to u for ever ! Even after finishing the game i feel like i'm hearing about it for the 1st time X)
Everyone constantly cites Symphony of the Night like the gold standard, but this game takes after the truly best of the series: the Sorrow games.
Well, this video is about to convince me to purchase a game I have avoided. Damn. Also, that voice.
Can't say that to everyone, but, if you're avoiding it for any reason... Just do yourself a favor and BUY IT RIGHT NOW. And then... Thank me later ;-D
*Right??* I mean Hayter's gonna' ....uh Hayt?
Why were you avoiding it?
What a great written video! This may be the best Bloodstained review I have seen so far. Simply excellent!
Literally the best indie game all year. Iga is a true legend. Never doubt yourself Iga.
This is easily one of the best gaming channels on youtube in terms of its content and execution. Also the narration is just stellar.
The narrator is a dude with a boob job.
"Changing my gameplay experience" Literally EVERYONE is using the painting shard
Just bought the game a few days ago and am in love with it! Haven't seen so much love put into a game in a long time.
"Weather is getting nice."
It was 115 degrees on Saturday.
Shout out to ValkryieAurora, lol! I just finished watching her Valkyrie Ventures on this, and her buggy experience is definitely something haha!
I saw that too she must've played the Switch version 😂
@@ladynikkie PC.
@@Yanikun I played on PC too but the only bug I encountered was with Gebel. He glitched out of his boss room once. Other than that, I had no issues. Guess I got lucky? Or maybe there were differences between the Steam and GOG versions? I got the game on GOG.
Rest in peace valkyrie :(
Couple things I thought needed a bit more explanation to an otherwise perfect video:
(0:41) Metroid-vania games have specific power-ups, generally a "double jump" for example, required for further exploration / completion.
I never played a Castlevania game, but I was able to make Miriam a discount Clare. That’s worth the money, if you ask me.
This is the second time youtuve has recommend your videos. Your depth of knowledge, perspective and calm, soothing voice/delivery earned you a new subscriber. Great stuff, looking forward to more.
Bunnymorphosis feels like the most OP shard that i've used
Not sure about OP but it is fun. Haven't fully powered it up yet though.
You spelled rigea stormaea wrong
Thank you for this video, this is exactly what I wanted to see - not so much just the game I wanted, but everyone out in the world to like it too, so we can keep going. I was a big part of the community and that was my mission. Everything has gone great and it gives me chills to see people appreciating it the way it was meant to be like this.
...also I just got a new Dino Crisis shirt yesterday lol.
You can make *JoJo poses* in the game, apparently....
There are several Jojo references.
Press and hold up on the dpad
And there's a vampire who can stop time and throw sharp objects at you. Hell there's even a stone mask
Excellent video, You are the "Iga" of youtube game reviews. Competent, Passionate and talented.
Too bad that the Switch version is a glitchy mess. :( Hope that they could fix the Switch version soon.
Yup
I heard it didn't perforn the best on xbox either. That was at launch so..?
@@humane143imperfection6 Let's hope they could fix all the versions of game.
@@humane143imperfection6 I've had the xbox version since launch day and aside from 1 crash and some fps drop in certain locations of the entire map once or twice it's been pretty smooth, atleast in my experience.
@@GFMarine that's promising, I had friends who had issues with the chests? I think it was? I'm over here laid up with some time to kill, I'll bite. It reminds me of Castlevaninia, Shovel Knight, graphical Bayonetta.
I´m so glad that I saw this review after playing the game. David Hayter's voice was a heart melting surprice and totally made my day (big time MGS fan), already suscribed BTW.
Welcome Company was my go to Shard the entire game, mostly because I played with Katanas and felt like I was playing Vergil with Summon Swords :).
I used it with spears slot because if an enemy is too close the spear's hitbox doesn't connect. Right where the portraits circle crosses the spear shaft.
I watch your vids in the background while playing more grindy games, but you have convinced me to try many more games that I wouldn't have tried otherwise. Now I have a switch I'll have to pick this game up!
14:22 I wonder if he snuck in a "kept ya waiting huh" somewhere in his dialogue 😂
Unfortunately he did not. I was hoping while playing the game, but it never happened :c
I think once you finished a playthrough, you can go into a sound test mode where Iga, Robert Belgrade and David Hayter make self referential quotes and "kept you waiting huh" was one of them.
your voice is simply captivating. I love your videos hun
Ill wait for your DinoCrisis review
I'm so happy to hear that it has turned out so well. I'm very excited to play it. It looks beautiful and I can't wait for all the surprises to come. (I skipped the middle of the video to preserve the mystique, but I'll come back and watch it through after I've completed the game.)
nice nice very nice Sphere Hunter-chan!
Another fantastic video. I was really curious about this one and now I really really want to play it!
This game turned out amazing and I love it
I also want my 1999 game
Totally picked this game up because of you, Suzi.
Its likeaying a cute version of Soma in a whole new adventure.
I love it- thank you!
Bloodstained left a feeling of jubilation that I can only compare to the Tales of series which is my all time favorite game franchise.
I love this game so much that it's an easy contender for one of my favorite video games ever.
I'm so happy you enjoyed it and and ecstatic to know that the Switch port is being worked on for the better.
This game just got a new fan and you just got a new sub. *throws wineglass*
Great video! I've been a big fan of Castlevania SotN, and I'm glad Bloodstained kept the original vibe and aesthetic. This game quickly became one of my favorite games of this year, contending to be one of my favorite games of all time.
This is easily one of the best games of 2019.
I've had this on my wishlist since i first heard of it. The sound of your voice is great! I'd like to hear you narrate a few games or oo maybe a monster encyclopedia!
I'm excited for this but if you want another good metroidvania the Momodora series is also really good
Second this, big time.
I was playing them both. One this day, the other that day. Was a crazy good week.
You spelled Hollow knight wrong
@@misterturkturkle I'm not allowed to like both and recommend one that's not ultra well known?

Fantastic video as always Suzi. I’ve been a fan ever since your REtrospective, from your voice,to the amount of research and your overall passion for the games you talk about. I genuinely mean it when I say I get excited for your vids
If you want another top tier Metroidvania game that came from kickstarter I highly recommend Hollow Knight. One of my favorite games in recent memory.
The Hollow Knight story is amazing! Yes, definitely a great one!
@Qwerty Bastard oh but the art style is really good. The characters and environments look amazing while also being fun and memorable. I do have to earn you that it's a bit difficult, especially the last free dlc.
Good vídeos, I'm new in your channel and it has brought me a lot of nostalgia, those were pretty good times, pretty good games and characters, cheers and thank you.
I honestly didn't think Iga could do it. But he made a proper SOTN sequel. (I know the GBA ones were good but they felt like a slight step down) I was so happy playing through this game. I completed the game last week and I already miss the Castle and the gameplay. 😭
Your videos are always positive and Refreshing
Fantastic video breakdown. The game is a genuine Kickstarter success story! ;-)
And also kojimas art which was beautifully Gothic, im so glad kojima got to do atleast one art piece for this game
@MGS-Fan here So what if it was composed by the same person? The only game I know with music in the same level as SotN is Ragnarok Online
I liked your review of this game and how you tried to include your friends experiences aswell. I also really love your voice :)
well i'm already level 76 with 90% of the map done on the Switch so any day now with that update would be neat
Wonderful video. You've convinced me to check out this game I've never heard of before now. That's an accomplishment.
