- Episode 251 - *WARNING - SOME VERY VERY SLIGHT SPOILERS* This time I take a focused review at Bloodstained Ritual of the Night for PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC. I also take a quick look at Bloodstained Curse of the Moon. These are both great homages to classic-style and Metrodvania-style Castlevania games!
Here's Game Sack’s Bloodstained announcement video which was released the day the Kickstarter was announced - • Holy Crap a new Metroi...

You're right about that track sounding like Ys!
the ys king has spoken
The Curse of the Moon game is way more than a fun little diversion! A new NES Castlevania is a main event in itself
I love me some Whys!
Yeah man as soon as I hear that violin action that's where my mind went immediately. Brought a big smile to my face.
What is ys?
You may crawl under a rock but don't die, Joe. I need that 8 MEGAPOWER in my life to function properly.
Joe - There is not a lot of happiness in my life. Game Sack is a ray of sunshine. Please keep it up. Thanks for everything! -Javi
Keep busy. Busy is happy.
Hey man, my father just recently passed away and life is been so rough. It's hard to find the time to be happy... But it is there and we can find it. Keep your chin up man
@Brian Babin Keep telling yourself these things, to make yourself feel less ashamed of being a failure.
@Brian Babin jfc dude... You're making guys who play video games look really bad.
Your reviews will do well, man. You should totally do more. Totally.
Well, yes but... it's immediately a turn off to see such a major conflict of interest with the Game Sack content in the game. I'm glad he mentioned it so early, because after seeing that it immediately becomes impossible to take this seriously as a review. What's he going to say, 'the game is really boring and disappointing and lame'. Hardly. He's not obligated to say anything good about the game of course, but I think it's quite misleading to call this a review.
It’s an ad
Do more of these! Was so hoping you would talk about this.
@@logan86123 But did he not back the game to get Game Sack content in? It's not like he was paid to advertise this or to get Game Sack in the game, right?
Maybe you know more about the situation, but I just assume he backed enough to get that in.
@@logan86123 You must have misunderstood something. Joe paid for the game like any other player. There is a conflict of interest when you get paid for the review, not the other way around.
That they chose to advertise it back then does not change a thing: they were not paid for it either.
Wow, nobody told me before if there is 8 MEGAPOWER secrets!!!
Now we know. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to add some 8MEGAPOWER to my save file.
That GameSack Power Strip is sweet! Thanks for the tip Joe! 👍
You’re awesome, discuss newer games whenever you like. Thank you for all the entertainment!
Thank YOU for keeping game sack alive Joe. Very much enjoyed this episode
I play ps7 games in my Sony Cassette Player from 1985. It's fully forward compatible.
Same, although it eats threw batteries, and the load times are horrendous!!
And with a Walk Man you can even play the games mobile.
*Who watches GameSack at 2 AM?*
OH BOY 2 AM!
Me ❤️
Probably people on the East coast
The real question is who is watching at 3 AM?
Always! It's the highlight of my Saturdays!
4 AM in South America. Oh boy. Maybe I shouldn't be so drunk.
I got it on the PC, running completely maxed at 2560x1440 and haven't seen a dropped frame! Also got it on the Switch since it's such an awesome game, and there, well, it can drop a few frames - but more annoying are the load times, which on the PC are nearly non-existent. Anywho I'm really not complaining, this game is fantastic.
At least the tips help the load times along.
Been playing at 1080p180 on PC, so glad this game supports high framerates. No dropped frames with maxed out settings.
Ive played this on my 4K at 3840x2160 without any drop frames on a GTX 1080ti. All the setting maxed out, I was so damn impressed with the background visuals and the attention to detail.
Anybody saying they get no dropped frames in this Unreal Engine game are either lying or simply didn't notice the dropped frames which are sadly inevitable on that engine.
I loved finding a hidden wall for the first time on accident and any time after that I would have to check every wall and when you find more it feels very satisfying!
Thank God you reviewed this Joe, I consider you the foremost authority on vampire ass kicking and really wanted to hear your thoughts before I picked this up.
Glad you did?
Yeah dude. Definitely do more reviews. Also, little touches like adding in sound effects of putting in your switch cartridge for example.. make this channel very special. You never skimp on editing details like that and it makes this channel a joy to watch! Thanks for the quality work.
I didn't support the Kickstarter, but I bought ROTN on Switch and Xbox and I bought COTM on Switch and 3DS. I loved the handheld Castlevania and SOTN.
Game Sack = best content on youtube. I think I'll buy this game based on your recommendation.
Was it worth a buy?
Love this game! Thanks for the review and definitely look forward to more like these.
MOHR REVIEWS. Joe, as discerning individuals we need the avalanche of modern titles curated through the lens of an expert. Help us. We need you now more than ever.
nah
love listening to you talk about games, reviews are definitely a welcome addition! seems like it could make for nice smaller "filler" vids between your usual and also give you a chance to talk about games that don't fit into the lists you're working on. looking forward to more!
Always good to see some quality content from you Joe, please more of it.
Now that Game Sack is a solo you should make more of these review videos more often about new and old games
thnx for the good job man
Yes Joe, we ALL want more of these type of videos! 🤘😎
Great review Joe, you're very informative, not only about gameplay but background info on the development process as well as music, keep up these new reviews.
I just ordered today and playing it next weekend thanks for the review without spoilers!
"Wait 6 months-to-a-year to buy games" I am a member of that club since 2010. Saves a lot of money! 😉
Weaponized 8MEGAPOWER is unbeatable.
The church environment looked amazing. Also loved the music in Curse of the Moon!
Great format! Hope we see this single game review episodes more in the future.
3pm here in Tokyo. Perfect timing Joe! More videos like this please!
2pm for me
@@BlueflagAlpha
I guess... Perth?
Allways more neo-retro reviews 👍.
You really got the essence and the important points of a neo-retro game.
The special attack with the fireball motion was in Symphony of the Night -- with certain weapons. Doing the fireball motion with the Wereblade made it damn near op.
Great review, Joe. I didn't even know about this game until now.
If reviews like this mean more GAME SACK then who am I to complain
I have to say that yes, the pc version is being flawless so far. No crashes, no freezing, locked 60fps. just great.
Works at 8K on my 486SX with 4MB RAM never a glitch!
The beauty about attack cancelling when you land a jump is timing a hit right before you land and it cancels after registering the first hit and you can do a quick follow up for a quick 2 strike combination which is great for the slow heavy weapons
I was glad to be part of the Game Sack Clan funding the Game. Great review
No crawiling under rocks and dying....you can review any game you want!!
Joe, only the playstation classic is forward compatible.
Yeah, forward compatible with a trash can.
Hieroglyphics
Very cool to see a successful kickstarter project. Thanks for sharing.
Totally do more of these. LOVE GAME SACK!
loved the new format! Please do more. But I have to admit at this point I'm such a big fan that I would probably watch anything you make. 😅
No slowdowns or freezes on the PC. Take that Mr. Sarcasm. (It still had the occasional crash before the first patch)
Haven't noticed anything on the PS4 either. I think only the Switch version is sufferinf at the moment.
@@CidGuerreiro1234 It's on all consoles, but worst on the Switch
I crashed once on PC but all i had to do was alt tab out and right back into the game and it resumed.
I have a question if anyone can answer this for me: can you control and command sprites using the Motorola 68k inside the Sega Saturn, while sh1 and sh2 as well as vdp-1 and vdp2 run backgrounds?
Planning on reviving the Saturn and bringing much needed new content? If so, please do. It is my favourite system and I would love to see some new indie games on it.
OMG!! This is what games sack should do always!!! One video about retro games one Sunday and one review next Sunday.
if anything, ritual of the night gives me some hope others will actually make "igavanias", as opposed to metroid clones... or 2Dark-souls-like...
I love the igavanias the best because of the gothic feel to them. No one else does them like him. He is the vania part of Metroidvania.
A 2D Dark Souls Metroid-vania?!! TAKE. MY. MONEY!
@@linkmaster6486 Blasphemy looks great. And if you like 2d dark souls metroidvania type games, check out Salt and Sanctuary.
And I was planning on making a first-person Metroidvania, too… Maybe I could add some Igvania elements?
@Chaos89P "igavania" is basicaly a type of metroidvania with rpg elements, focus on combat and less on plataforming. it does have trick jumps, and some puzzles, but most of the game is about combat, with a vast cast of enemies and locations.
The PC is definitely the definitive version of this game. 144 fps makes it feel so smooth
Yeah, even my 75 Hertz feels so good. Kinda ridiculous that some people say there's no big difference, 60 and 75 Hertz are not even close.
A. Crux, let me guess, you are a part of the PC Master Bates or Master Wanks crowd?
@@xPandamon , yourself as well?
@@paxhumana2015 Yes. Not one of the "PC is so much better" gang though. My PS Vita still get's regular usage despite being pretty outdated nowadays. I was stuck with a 19' 1280x1024 screen and bad PC parts for years so i know how bad PC gaming can be aswell as how good it can be. For a game like this that runs at solid 60fps without issues the extra fps feel great and even in games like The Division 2 it feels so nice to have. If you're able to get 1080p60 you should be glad cause i couldn't some time ago but that's the standard i expect in 2019. Everything above that is nice but not neccesary for a good time :)
@@paxhumana2015 I can't take you seriously if you're using low effort insults like that lol. The PC is the platform with the best performance and visual quality. If you want to feel your insecure about your console of choice IDGAF. You can't debate facts
nice shovel knight appearance @ 11:30
Good extra episode! Keep doing them!
I don't really care much for Metroidvanias but gosh, I LOVED Bloodstained Curse of the Moon!
I got it on my 3DS soon after it released, and it really managed to scratch my Classic Castlevania itch!
We hadn't gotten a new old-school Castlevania game since The Adventure Rebirth all the way back in 2009, and the last one before that was Legends back in 1997 on the original Game Boy, and that one was rubbish!
Also, the music is in Mono because it was composed in Famitracker using the VRC6 soundchip, so it could play on a real NES provided that chip was in the cart...
This is the third game I've heard of that uses Famitracker, the other two I'm guessing are the newest Blaster Master games.
Do you mean by Inti Creates specifically?
Because there's no shortage of indie games that used Famitracker for their music... (For better or for worse)
Play Haunted Castle and then come back and say that about Castlevania: Legends, Michirin9801.
@@Michirin9801 Yeah, I meant Inti Creates, specifically. Unless I see "nsf" somewhere in the credits, I usually think the chiptunes are made with some other sound instruction code, usually MIDI.
I've played it already, and yeah, Legends is rubbish, but Haunted Castle is a trainwreck on a dumpster fire...
I have put over 36 hours into. Pretty awesome game, and I cannot wait for the COOP and Randomizer DLC.
9:48 So glad we are on the same page Joe. Glad I'm not the only one who thought this.
i love this new style of video! absolutely would love to see more!
Perfect timing, I was looking for something to watch!
A NEW GAME SACK, TODAY?
UNEXPECTED, BUT NOT UNWELCOME
Great review. I would love to watch more of these.
I think the canceling of attacks when hitting the ground is a good thing, because it allows you to skip end lag and throw out moves quicker, like fox or falco lasers in melee
Great episode as always, Joe! I have Curse of the Moon for Switch as well and it is indeed awesome. I want Blood Stained for Switch, but I will wait a bit so they can fix it with a patch - although if they don’t have one by the end of the year, I’ll go ahead and grab either the PS4 version or Xbox one version and possibly pick up the Switch version at a later date.
I love the idea of you doing review episodes along side retro episodes. I’d say go for it - more Game Sack is always a good thing🤘🏾😎🤘🏾
I thought birth Bloodstained games were brilliant. Plus, the new update for the PS4 version of RotN almost fixed everything. Great video!
I actually really loved this in-depth look at a single game! Very cool to see a review like this! I'd love to see more!
I agree 100%, Joe. Perfect review. The Gaiares system you spoke of is lifted directly from Aria of Sorrow.
Thanks Joe for covering my new favorite game franchise.
Is it still possible to get a physical version? I didn't back it as I don't back things. But really only buy digital if it's a 11/10 game with zero chance of physical.
It's readily available
Got mine physical at Wal Mart
This was a treat, excellent review Joe!
Love it Joe! Please keep making more content, it never gets boring.
I've been playing for about 6 hours, and I honestly can't think of a single thing wrong with this game. It's the first "metroidvania" that I've been able to play without issue. It was on sale for 20 us dollars. I would pay 60 happily!
It was DEFINITELY a good episode, I will DEFINITELY purchase this game and DEFINITELY hope to see more cool little episodes like this one.
So, did you?
@@Apanblod Yes and this game is great!
@@werewolfy6 Ok, great to hear! I've been thinking about buying it when it's on sale. I've never played a Castlevania game before, but hopefully I'll still be able to appreciate it.
I learned about the kickstarter for this from you guys years ago, so happy it's finally hear and it was pretty much everything I hoped for. Thanks for the heads up then and the great review now.
Joe, this episode ruled. I would like to see more episodes focusing on one game each.
What!? I'm a backer and heard nothing about this!!
GOTHIC WEREWOLVES!!! Thank you Metal Allah. I might try this game out someday.
Really enjoyed the review! If time allows it would be cool to see more!
Excellent bit of an interval from normal GameSack :)
Excellent episode! Joe alone rules!
I found Curse of the Moon graphically much more appealing than Bloodstained...
Somebody who gets it.
Yes, do this format again. I really enjoyed it!
Lol I knew about the different names at the start but didn't realize they gave you different weapons. Very cool!
Where's the Midnight Notification Squad at?
Nathaniel Foga Dang you up this late?
Afternoon squad
He got it right about the PC version even tho he was being sarcastic. It is basically flawless, whereas every other version has had major patch bugs and serious performance issues.
Apple pies and certain other foods do massive HP recovery and you can carry (99 of them (I think, I only ever carried around 40 which was more than enough). Also obtain the Augment LUK shard from the mimics in Inferno Cave and then craft that into Augment gold. Collect 9 of these and rank it up to 9 and it becomes a permanently equipped shard, then equip it as a passive for a double effect. This will cause candles and torches to drop 100, 500, 1000, and 2000 gold bags and you will never have money problems again.
If you find a rare drop like gold that can be dismantled you can then recombine the materiel you just dismantles into the item again and it becomes available from the shop.
You can cheat your way through the ninja race in Den of Behemoths by using reflector ray to bypass the starting line. Run the course and across the finish line then go back to the start and run through the starting line. When you get to the finish line again you will win even if the ninja made it there first.
I'm glad you're trying new stuff Joe! Keep up the good work!
It's Shitstained on Switch. Buy digital on that platform only if the patches work. Has game breaking bugs 4 to 5 hrs in.
She can collect sharts? / ●w● \ naniiiiii!?
Thanks for still Game Sacking, I never would have heard of these games if not for the channel. One of many reasons this is my favorite gaming channel on YT!
Amazing review Joe. I absolutely love this game. Please do more reviews like this!!!!!
Great episode, and a nice way to change things up a bit! I wouldn't mind seeing more of this
Loved the review! Hope you do more.
Joe, please do more reviews! I among many others respect your opinion, it would be awesome to see your in depth reviews on stuff.
At 04:37 of this video you had the most clever solution of all time, cheers to you dude!
Awesome video - yes more reviews! Don't die under a rock like Dave did!
keep these commin Joe, love this type of episodes
What's better than waiting for sunday to come and bring Gamesack along? What about not knowing that you are waiting for someday to come and bring gamesck along, but still getting a new episode.
Nice review very helpful I'm going to wait a bit but i will pick this up for sure.
Thanks for the Bonus! :)
As soon as I tap on video thumbnail I immediately press like because I know you're gonna to present some top notch Joe keep up the good work
Great show, doing a bang up job as a solo presenter. Game reviews in this format would be great, even ones without retro elements.
Reason why those potions doesn't help much is because you can craft/buy food, they are also consumable healing items aside from the stat boost
Hey Joe, hope all is well. I truly believe you have some of the best retro content on RUclips. Super high quality and always entertaining. Love what you're doing with the channel as it evolves over these years! Stay blessed brotha!
Totally forgot about this game in a sea of games, will pick it up for sure for the Switch!
These are great man! Really like how you gave a bit of the history and your honest opinion. Def do more Joe!
Great review man. I’d watch more of these.
