- Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night review/first thoughts is an metroidvania action role-playing video game developed by ArtPlay, DICO and WayForward Technologies, and published by 505 Games. The game's development was led by former Castlevania series producer Koji Igarashi, and is considered a spiritual successor to the series. Bloodstained was released for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in June 2019. A retro-style companion game, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, was developed by Inti Creates and released in May 2018.
Igarashi conceived the game after his departure from Konami in 2014, prompted by numerous fan requests for him to make another Metroidvania-type game. He used the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter to demonstrate to potential funding agencies of the demand for the game in 2015, which successfully raised more than US$5.5 million from backers, making it one of the most funded video game campaigns on the platform.

This was a day one purchase. Glitches or not, this is a damn good game. I honestly don't mind the grind with this one.
Yea alot people say the game is shit because of bugs but if you look past that the game pretty solid
@@Ryuma103desires I personally had one crash and a few minor glitches on PC. Very stable version. Performance is great on my computer, I can even mess around with Reshade to enhance the visuals a bit.
People not on Switch are exaggerating the glitches. I’m 30 hours into my game on a base PS4 and I’ve had zero crashes. And now in the post game I’m moving faster than ever, changing areas super fast and nothing has broken. I have come across some minor glitches here and there but nothing big at all. And like I said this is not even on a Pro, just a regular launch day vanilla PS4.
Uggh. I had to go out of state for the week right when I got the double jump... so many places I'm going to forget to double back to.
Pretty amazing that we have Castlevania completely back in every way but name!

Why do people keep bringing up the 4 year dev time like it's an unreasonable amount of time for a small team to spend making a great game?
this game felt far too technically unimpressive for a 4 year dev cycle. It almost felt like a fan game based on a defunct engine from a far earlier game

I am just really happy this game exists.
And that it isn't another Mighty No.9 disaster.
It is a trip to see myself, so happy I did it, I got my cousin in the game also as a bday gift for him. He loves the game.
Side note on music, I think the nier automata soundtrack is right up there with SOTN. Phenomenal soundtrack

I'm now a true believer in Iga, so I really hope there is a sequel. Not having to build an entirely new world from scratch would let them focus on so many improvements. Bloodstained was great, but it could be so much greater.
Glad to hear more input about Bloodstained. Bummer about the glitches. But it sounds like a fun experience.
Also hope there will be a sequel to this. It deserves to keep this style of action & storytelling + music alive.

This will probably one of the only games i'll 100% everything on. I love Castlevania and have been waiting on a true successor to SoTN.
You should try Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrows. DS and 3DS Castlevania's by IGA. I would even argue that Aria was better than SOTN.

It sounds like QA were not given enough time to test the update before it got pushed. Not surprised. My experience of QA is the high ups rush you to ok things and when it screws up the game you are the one that gets blamed.
I didn't experience many glitches. I thought it was great.
About 12 hours in the game (I've done lots of grinding so I'm not very far in) but the only glitch I found is sometimes enemies drop an item bag and when I walk over it the bag won't give me the item. I found that if you wait a few moments until the bag disappears before going to another room you'll acquire the item automatically

I bought this game purely from your views on it in the last video and I really enjoy it. I have never played a Castlevania game before either lol, I just find this one quite hard to find out what to do next but thats part of its beauty. It reminds me of being a kid and playing my Megadrive trying to figure out where to go.
I love the threatening way the Hidden Deserts music starts, also I think you're right with everything, I agree!!!

I fully agree 🖒. I hope Igarashi-san continues to develop his impressively gothic 2D masterpieces. He obviously has a capable staff & talented co-workers, which is obvious after playing this game, even only briefly. This game looks & handles spectacularly. Miriam even has 2 different ducking strike, attack animations! I'm really impressed with this game & look forward to the dlc, updates, & fixes.

Music in Castlevania Circle of the Moon on GBA is epic too, I just love Castlevania music, and old Konami music in general, it's a huge part of what made them so great, seriously check out the music in Contra 3 on SNES for example, it's the most perfect action movie music ever and its all coming out of a humble 16bit console
Upgrade the Detective's Eye to lvl 9 so it becomes an active skill and you dont have to worry about picking up items
You mean, you upgraded it so you don't need to worry about glitches... Should be rank 9 upgrade: "Fixes glitches"
I'm glad to hear about your experience. I got it on the switch and can't say that my feelings are nearly as optimistic. I've just put it on the shelf to revisit after its been patched.
I felt this game is more akin to the GBA Castlevania's. This game is fantastic, but it doesn't quite have the same horror vibe as SOTN that I was hoping for.
I agree, great game, but it feels more like Aria or Dawn of Sorrow
@@c.j.echave Yes, and I love those games. Toru Hagihara directed/produced SOTN with Igarashi as assistant-director. Igarashi produced/directed all of the GBA games, so ROTN makes sense in that regard. I guess we'll never have the magic of SOTN unless they team up again.

The ds games were pretty great too. Order of ecclessia is my favorite castlevania.
I played ps4 version day 1 for like 3 hours. Next I got the updates and I never had any major glitches. Only thing was items on an edge couldn't be picked up sometimes. I've poured 37 hours into this game since launch and I've loved every minute of it. I'm extremely close to getting the platinum trophy
I'm about halfway finished with Bloodstained. I've only noticed missing words in dialog boxes and I made the game crash on PS4, reading from a bookshelf while in combat.
I didn't want to put it down, but I had other games to get to. Almost no games make me instantly want to jump into NG+, but oh I wish I had the time this time.
The game requires you to go with every room and then I get tired.. too bad I don't have the time to finish, only 9 hours in and im done.. this is still a solid game.
Platinum'd it. It has flaws but I enjoyed it very much. Customization and RPG elements are incredible.
And there's much more to come down the line.
Im trying to accomplish the all items trophy at the moment. Trhen ill get the platty

I didn't play SOTN until around 2008, and without nostalgia glasses I find the music in that game to be better than ROTN
It is better but ROTN has some really great tracks too! SOTN soundtrack is classic and forever remembered!

Sotn music is lightning in a bottle. It was the best at the time and remains the best. Its not fair to compare them honestly.

Anyone experience the glitch where u got stuck at a doorway between two rooms and keep cycling through them? What about the rumble glitch - pad keeps rumbling even when u switch it off in the menu? What abwt the stuttering in frame rate - at some points coming to a halt for at least two seconds? Loved every second of playing it 🤩
Great video! I will admit that my PS4 did crash when I picked up a book from the bookcase. Now I'm just extremely cautious and wait to find a save room before it happens again, lol.
I remember when I would constantly check in to his channel when he was just stating to create content during the early YT days. Video views were about 100-250. Now he gets 10k views in just 5 hours. Glad this channel is doing good.
On PC sometimes my character stops moving (usually while reading a book). I found out I can still open the menu and "suspend" the game and reload from title screen to move again without losing any progress. Hope it helps somebody.
Even though I also updated the game 8 hours into my run, I did not have any story based chest blocked by the glitch. I did however have several chests with recipe and accessories blocked out which means no 100%. The update also changed the ulfbrandt sword chest into the flying edge sword which I cannot get and then its upgrade by proxy.
Great review. Just by watching this video, I can tell you really enjoyed this game. I will be getting the PS4 version soon. Glad I didn't get it before that first update though.
used the reflector ray on a certain part of the ceiling in the lost garden and went through it, tried everything but i could only slide, so i slid for a while and it kept warping me from room to room in the lost garden. kinda cool but annoying glitch if you didn't save before.
I've been going through it very slowly and methodically, and really enjoying it. I must be close to 10 hours in and I'm at about 40% map completion. For me, it is no Symphony of the Night, but still very enjoyable. Looking forward to playing a lot more this weekend!
I had a weird glitch where a chair grabbed me in the library area and screen transitioned me into a wall. I tried to fix it by waystone and then got stuck in the homepoints wall.
I really loved this game! I also had that same nostalgia of playing through Symphony so many years ago. One glitch I had was when trying to read the tips in the book shelves. I had one crash the game on PS4. It hasn't happened again yet, but I have been pretty wary of them. I make sure to save before going to read one.
I can't seem to get the inverted castle
started w/ the 1.02 update but i notice with the item glitch, if you wait for like 30 secs the bag will open and give the item, it just takes a while. at least it worked for me this way, long as i didnt leave the area the bag was in
Had the book crash glitch and the end boss electricity sound glitch too.
these issues seem to be exclusive to console. Never heard of any of these glitches appearing in the PC version.
Before the patch, I had a problem with Miriam's face being missing and all my stats on all my items were significantly reduced.

One thing that this game got right over SOTN is the difficulty. But aside from that flaw SOTN is one of the greatest games of all time with the best soundtrack EVER
I have it on ps1 Saturn ps3 psp and now ps4 but for some reason never played it but I cant wait till the week end

I ran into a game breaking bug about 6 hours in. I was really enjoying it up to that point though
I encounter a glitch where i had slide into the water and miriam was unable to jump. I had to use a wayward stone to respawn myself which kinda suck.
Best game I've played in 20 years. Have the game soon on Switch, backed it there + PS4 + GOG + Steam. Fun mods for it too on the PC. Love it!
I'm not quite done with it yet, but already love it dearly. Hope we see more Bloodstained in the future.
Have you played Hollow Knight? That's my favorite game from the last 20 years. The beautiful world and music create such an unforgettable atmosphere, and the combat is very fun and challenging. Definitely give that one a try, if you haven't already. Amazing game for any fans of the genre.

I played the Steam version and other than that loot glitch where you sometimes can't get loot I didn't really experience any other issues.
Man. I must be lucky. I beat the game with 0 glitches on PS4. Started after patch though. Amazing freaking experience. Edit: actual I did have that map problem briefly. I’ll back the hell out of what Iga wants to do next.

I can’t open the chests under the water, any idea why?
You pretty much summed up my feelings on it. I was lucky not to get any bugs or glitches or anything and outside of all that patch drama, it's still an amazing game, with the music being the only gripe I have; it's just not memorable enough. There's a few great tracks scattered like Twin Dragon Towers but there's no Clock Tower and definitely no Bloody Tears either, sadly.
Mix glitch just now listening to your video was changing setting for screen, and I went to the button configuration. The game buttons are fine, but I have to hit O on PS4 instead of X and vise versa. So now confirming and cancelling is a born of a pain
Played it on the PC, the only glitch I've come across, luckily, was in Celeste's room where the game just froze, and disconnected my controller. Though some text are missing on text boxes.

I got my ps4 copy the day before launch and didn't experience any empty chests or missing items. I did, however experience some sound glitches (including the hissing sound after I killed the final boss), weird light flickering when I hit certain candles, and dropped frames in many areas. Aside from the technical problems, I feel like it's a worthy successor to SOTN, I just really hope they do a lot of work to it because all of these problems inhibit my enjoyment of the game.
I did get the progress glitch, and had to start over. Regardless, I trucked along, did better my second time around, and finished the game last night with 100% of the castle map finished. I adore this game.

@@danielpagan2848 that's a really good point. I guess it helps that Johnny is a big fan of a lot of game genres/styles too, the guy just loves video gaming.
I have the switch version and didn't notice anything weird as far as loading times. I am installed on the internal memory if that makes a difference. I did notice a boat load of glitches some have even helped me. Example first boss I lost about 5 times. Put the game down. Loaded it up later went to the boss and somehow one hit killed it. Don't know how to exain what happened but it happened.
A few other weird things like getting stuck in walls and can't hit candles until I go out and back in the rooms.
I updated the latest patch and my game freezes up constantly now..
Its 2022 and my Switch version still crashes at random times. Multiple save slots for the win.

Has anyone else had any hard crashes? I've had the game completely shut down on me twice so far (I've just passed the train).
Playing disc version on base PS4 for point of reference.
Ive had maybe five hard crashes in the 30 hours ive put into it. Im playing on xbox which hasnt gotten the patch yet. Ive managed to beat it and 100% the castle without any problems except those hard crashes. They just taught me to save often and werent too much problem.
PS4 version caught an update, today. Not sure what it fixed.
hmmm I'm playing ps4 digital version and I don't think I have had a single crash, I'm way past the train at 70% map completion
Once on PC about 8 hours into the game, upon reading a bookcase the game crashed. Was pretty paranoid about reading those ever since, but it hasn't happened again.
@@ShadowUltra Both my crashes happened at a bookshelf. Seemed to happen when I tried to read a book whilst an enemy was dying. Might be something?
Waiting for my Switch copy to arrive, if the glitches/loading times are too distracting from the overall experience I’ll wait for some patches for sure. That’s ok though, there are plenty of games to complete in the backlog
Wall warping glitch. The area where you need the Aegis Armor to pass through. If you use the hand to grab the spike tomb and move backward towards the wall, eventually you’ll be backed to the wall and it warp you inside and bounce you back up to the door.
Also seeing your jacket, among all the food items in the game, I'm glad Pineapple Salad isn't one of them :'(
I had a boss disappear and never come back, the one you get the reflector ray from. Gremory got stuck in a loop and I couldn't damage her. I got into the millonaire's room without the key. I can't finish the demon list because some bosses are glitched and don't show up. It sucks playing on xbox and being pushed aside for every other platform first.
I improve my English by watching your videos! That's amazing, even if you speak fast, I can understand almost everything you are saying! About the game I cancelled my European Switch preorder, I was told about serious glitches and bugs on this version, and I'm waiting for the ps4 one. I had some doubts about this game before its release, but when I see all Castlevania fans good feedbacks, I think that I don't have to worry about this game. Can't wait to try it!
A glitch I got was I drop kicked on a water and I can't jump anymore.
Also, random control inputs not responding in the menu.
Also the two dragon-like boss on the spiral tower, I clipped through the ground after panic pausing for potions, I beat the boss by hitting its back. LoL
Your review got me to grab this!! I played the first iteration of it and was hooked....THEN!!! there was a sotn/metroidvania style one that came out of nowhere.... and holy!!!! Its got me more hooked then most modern console releases!

Also playing the ps4 version, the load times, especially after dying, are very long for me. Beyond that and some slow down, luckily have had no issues.
Absolutely awesome. At age 39 I am transported back to October 1997 and age 17 again. So glad I was a backer. Well, a slacker backer...
just waiting for the other dlc's now....only glitch i experienced is when items drop near the edge and it wont get dropped to the ground and cant pick it up
