In current world scenario with GPU prices being sold for the price of a small car, Xbox SX and PS5 are doing a great job.
@Bryce Czirr That still costs more than a current gen console. Not worth it yet. The consoles are more affordable right now and they handle the new games quite well.
@Bryce Czirr damn bro that's crazy but who asked

It’s especially brutal for this game as your have to get through so many starter missions before you can even really have the game open up for you…
@@fensoxx I'm sure they don't need to play those
I love how you're one of the few pointing stuttering problems in games, that's the first step to make devs more careful since it's a very boring thing.
And the worst part is that these stutter issues become an even bigger problem on lower spec machines.
I am only running a Ryzen 5 3600, 3200CL16 Ram overclocked to 3600 (with mediocre timings), a cheap Sata SSD, and the stutter in games such as Far Cry 5 and Jedi: Fallen Order was unbearable, way worse than what was shown here in the video.
Since most consumers have somewhat similar machines to my own, and don't all own a beastly 10900k, their experience will be somewhat similar to mine which is a serious issue.
@@denniswrede2130 a 3600, 3600Mhz cl16 and an SSD is hardly low-end
more like annoying rather than boring.
Stuttering in games is the absolute worst and is bonkers common and I’ve got a beefy rig + g-sync.
@@BlindBison Same, actually stuttering above 60 fps is like a punch in the eyes, sure everyone has a different tolerance but stutter from 144 or above to 40 completely ruin the experience and make useless building a new powerful pc. Sadly these days most games stutters to some degree, and thanks god someone big like Digital Foundry is starting to point out this problem which in my opinion is one of the biggest plague in modern gaming.

I love how janky the animation of the alligator was. Full stop no slowing down before stopping. Typical Ubisoft level of quality.

The stuttering every few seconds on a 9900k and a 3090 is unacceptable. I'll be at 4k over 60 fps the entire time, but it'll still stutter randomly with an m2 ssd. They need to fix the CPU core bounding issues.
You’re telling me a Buggysoft game is running strange at launch? I’m shocked I tell you, shocked.
Windows 11 upgrade fixed most of it for me with 3090. It's still there but more subtle and easier to ignore
I’m using 3900x with 3080 ti and no stuttering issues. Vsync locked 4k60. Haven’t noticed any thread being worked alone.
Same here i play at 4k max settings with an rtx 3090 and i9 9900k. So far only high settings with RT off runs butter smooth and free of stutter, we just have to wait for patches.
I have a 3090 and a 10980XE. Huge stutter while driving. Unacceptable in 2021. I play the game at 4K maxed out with HD textures but no RTX (I am not a fan of it in general).
My biggest issue is no FOV slider on console. Definitely a must have setting in modern first person/third person games
yep i really hope it is on the first patch hey?
I’m sure it was going under 60s with the slider. Seems like that’s why they scrapped it.
@@FunKaYxxD1sCO I would rather have a high FOV with some minor frame drops than a small FOV with solid frame rate to be honest

Enjoying the game for the most part, but this graphics engine feels a bit crusty nowadays. Dunia needs a refresh.
Dunia is just a modded CryEngine
I think it looks amazing for game play it's the 30 fps cutscenes that's bugging me. Idk why they didn't just make it consistent across the board for next Gen consoles
Crusty?
@@FounderX9 The world is, but the characters look terrible, in the end it all works out because it gives it this cartoony/ celshaded look almost with the bright colour palette beeing used. but the engine needs a revamp and more realism.
Lol wtf game are you playing? It's fn beautiful!
Yeah, thats sounds like a great idea, putting in Ray Tracing and cutting it down until it's barely noticeable. I get quarter resolution stuff, performance reasons, of course, but not using rt on water and using rt shadows only for sun and without alpha. I mean what's even a point of this? At least give us Crytek style console variables to play around and remove all those restrictions..
AMD sponsored game so they were probably forced to cut down RT to make it actually playable on AMD gpus and removed the higher settings to make it less embarrassing.
It’s because Ray Tracing was developed from the perspective of AMD cards and not nvidia. Nvidia cards are capable of far better RT.
Just for the name sake.
AMD the company that every tech tuber bootlicks pushed for this
"far better RT" doubt
It's far from being much better, it only performs a bit better because nvidia is at its second generation of RT while AMD is at his first. RT performance of current AMD cards are equivalent of Turing, which is not bad at all.
Other AMD sponsored titles have great RT, stop sharing misinformation.

Super Mario Sunshine blew my mind on GameCube with the water. Haven't really seen huge jumps since then...
Thanks for the thorough analysis once again!
I thought something was wrong with my rig with how bad the stutters were, so it's good to know it's just an issue with the engine and is consistent across all versions. I hope the developers start listening and begin to optimize more as we get further into this new generation of games.
The issue with stutters when you pan the camera on PS5 (and presumably on XBOX) is a bug. It happens after watching 3-4 cutscenes (where the framerate is capped at 30 fps). When game resumes after watching a small number of said cutscenes the in game framerate begins to show these tiny stutters. If you close the game and reload it, the fps during gameplay is once again buttery smooth without even a hitch of a stutter. So this thing is definitely a bug that is tied to cutscenes.
Thank you. I’m playing this now and was wondering what was causing it because I can play for long stretches with excellent performance and then all of a sudden bad and persistent tearing
Great video Alex. I’m playing it on the Series X and am absolutely loving it. Thanks for pointing out the stuttering when panning the camera. I have noticed it but haven’t thought anything of it. But now I now that it’s a problem and hope they address it. Thanks again.

@@TheAero36 looks great on xs but be careful don't buy the disk that says both because it isn't fucking stupid Microsoft. i loaded it and was wondering why it didn't say xs had to go return disc just ignorant
And the Series X destroys the PS5 version again and don’t forget which is something DF need to start factoring in and it’s a big mistake they currently don’t Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos
And just like all other channels, Xbox series X won, again.
This game can also be very CPU bound at times, so increasing graphics settings may not necessarily even have much of a performance hit.
And it uses only 4 out of 8 cores available on consoles. 8 cores on PC bring no increase in fps over 4 core CPUs like 12100F or 3300X.
@@Kynareth6 which causes funny things at 1080p, like a 2070S being barely slower than a 3090

so its not something wrong on my ps5 if it fps drops in far cry 6 and miles morales and cyberpunk 2077 it stutters too
Alex! Nooooo! I’ve been waiting all day for this and you didn’t talk about Fidelity FX. I messed with the damn benchmark for two hours this morn trying to see if DRS was better for hitting 60 or Fidelity. I cannot make heads or tails of the results I’m getting on my RTX2060.
I remember the Dunia stutter back on Far Cry 4! Had a great PC for the time, very high average frame rate but it stuttered horribly when driving. I think it has improved since, but sounds like it's still a bit of an issue across the board.
Yes, any wasd movement had some sort of animation stutter if it wasn’t locked at 30 or 60. Absolute pain in the ***. Primal and 5 fixed that but the driving stutter remained
It was most likely the VRAM buffer being maxed out and the game engine having to pull data files from your SSD to memory.
I started noticing the stutter in FC4. FC5 has it, and now FC6 is even worse in my opinion. 3090 and 10980XE.

I play on Series X and during the mission “Spur of the Moment" I had a massive fps drop during the cave portion when I threw a molotov in the cave while fighting the horde of roosters
A horde of roosters? Wait, whaaat? Like in Days Gone that you had the horde of freakers and whatnot?

I played that mission on the series S version and I didn't notice any framerate issues in that cave.
The blue halo effect with raytraced reflections on is so distracting and hideous!
Yes it does and this is the best they can do for there triple a game the best of the best looks like they should be demoted from the triple A list until they start to fix there engine or update it to a more newer and less buggier. Also you should only get the triple A status if you meet the standard of excellent that covers every thing down to optimization pushing the visuals to the limits with hardly no bugs and gameplay for me that's the gold standard but unfortunately game dev just get away with it all the time. Buy demoting company that fail to deliver what should be a triple A game should mean they cant charge triple A money for the title . If we do our job poorly we get completes, warnings, or even sacked or demoted these game devs are no different.
@@bioshock6935 Remember they are using an old ass engine that's had new features bolted on was never designed for most of the features that have been added.
@@TheSynrgy1987 So why put new feature in the old game engine in the first place if it wasn't designed to work properly you would of thought new features for a new and better engine would be the first and upmost thing to do and for the future for the far cry franchise and start to produce realistic looking graphics instead of this over the top cartoon style graphics with bright colours don't they know what natural colours and environment should look like. All i see in this game is another shadow of the tomb raider graphics boring and nothing new for a 2021 game that is not next gen even the trees and grass looks bad. Great to finally see a far cry game at 60FPS and a decent resolution on next gen. I’m disappointed FOV has been left out.
It looks fine on my series s, the only thing I don’t like is that there is major pop in especially when running around instead of walking.
Ubisoft doesnt have to hire bugtesters because they know after the initial release they can just watch the DF review and fix all the published bugs in an update.
lol except they don't fix major issues
This game desperately needs an FOV slider on consoles, even at the cost of resolution, this is one of the few games that gives me motion sickness.
Yeah same here, can't play more than a hour at a time, the begining going to the sewer, not a pleasant experiece, pun intended
Wow I played it 5 hours straight last night and didn't feel one thing haha
It's not terrible on foot, but driving and horses seem pretty bad.
No FOV slider, no buy.

On my 3080 the low res mipmaps were also an issue at 1440p, while vram usage never exceeded 8700 MB. I saw a tiny fps boost by disabling hyperthreading on my 10850k, really only 2-3 fps gain though.
@Geo M Er, why? At PS5 settings I get much, much higher FPS. I mainly play games I mod anyway, so PS5 doesn't really do anything I'd need.

Because it's software that makes the fundamental difference, and you can bring a powerhouse of any kind to a crawl with an optimised or buggy software. So every time the Console Wars drones proclaims superiority because of a single data point, it is absolutely ludicrous.
And also PC master race drones are just as bad. Coming into wave their virtual privates about to say "hahaha we have more powerful hardware!" is similarly ludicrous, because when you have no upper limit on how much you may spend, of course you will have higher hardware potential.

These games just putting rt reflection and shadows in their games can hardly be called representative of what rt is all about. Very few games go the extra mile, wish there were more like Metro, that push what can be done.
Metro is alot more visually interesting.
non-rt reflections ie. ssr or cubemaps are very distracting, when you get used RT reflections, so i would say dynamic reflections/GI are best candidate for RT cause otherwise they are very costly via rasterizer..
It's usually a case with AMD sponsored titles. This is like the fourth AMD title in a row that has had garbage ray tracing with quarter resolution. RE Village was bad. Godfall was bad. Dirt 5 was bad.
True but I think we are at least a pro generation away from consistent impressive ray tracing. A lot of people play games on consoles and the consoles are still super limited in this regard.
That's probably too demanding for next-gen consoles and anyone who doesn't have the mid-high end RTX cards. RT also is very costly on the CPU side too which is worrying imo since with the very capable Ryzen Zen 2 CPUs in the new consoles there was hope that developers would be pushing things like more advanced physics and AI but that's going to be difficult when devs use much of the CPU resources for RT for better graphics.
These game companies should pay Digital Foundry to test their games before release. Would save them so much time. I will wait until this game is better optimized before purchasing. It is a shame that with a game engine this far into its lifespan they still have the same issues as previous generations.
so wait for battledield 2042 after it releases as well. because it will also be filled with bugs and optimisation issues. but we all know everyone will still buy those games even if it releases in an unfinished state.

About the stutter... Back in th day when I played Far Cry Primal, I had an unplayable stutter (I do mean unplayable). Alex good job, pointed out every single issue I had personally found and experienced while playing the game. 'Dunia engine traversal stutter' in my opinion is the single biggest issue I have with the game and in my support ticket I submitted to Ubisoft days ago I had pointed out the exact same issue stating its been in the game ever since FC4 atleast. They really need to put more effort into QA and fix this issue once and for all in their engine, as its otherwise making a polished game rather not polished and really not fun to play.

They praised Microsoft for making a console to meet the needs of people who hadn't yet jumped to 4k displays, and get to pay less for it.
There was massive fanfare over the Series S being targeted towards those people.
It seems weird now to talk about how soft it looks on 4k displays.
@@brewski535 No the Series S is not perfect for 1080p simply because it typically runs below that resolution and that is on 8th generation games. People are so dumb and cheap they will trade value and performance for a machine that is only $100 less.
Also in Farcry 6 when you enable HD textures the Vram bar in video settings doesn't show Vram going over 10 GB with RTX 3080. The Vram usage bar in video settings shows far less than 10 GB usage with every setting maxed.
The stutter is definitely bad in some cases. I got a 3080ti, intel 8800k @5.0ghz, 16gb ram, m.2 nvme and most of the time I'll run between 90-110 depending on the area in 2k resolution with the HD Texture pack. In some instances I've seen my frames briefly drop to the 60s. Luckily it's very brief, but it does make the game feel like I'm struggling to run it. What's weird it's not just when I'm exploring. Sometimes it's when I'm going around picking up items at some of the small guerilla camps on the trails without much to process. It's dealable, but definitely annoying.
Definitely a bit rough around the edges even if it’s an improvement overall. Ubisoft needs to start giving the far cry teams another year in between titles to polish them up
It was already delayed 8 months for polish.
@@Phil_529 Dunno what to tell ya, it needed more time . Cyberpunk 2077 got delayed 3 times for polish and it still released a mess. Companies shouldn’t release products before they’re finished, it’s their upper management teams fault
@@itsalwaysdarkestbeforethes1198 I mean there are a few minor issues here and there but the game is enjoyable.
@@Phil_529 yeah it’s solid, it’s just not finished. The performance on PC alone shows cut corners

For every game, I’m waiting for Alex’s optimized settings. : )
loved the nvidia optimized articles and missed them. Now Alex took over the hole
Thank you so much for comparing the Performance of the Pc version with console on the same Fps Analysis Tool that you Guys using for measuring console Fps. Looking forward to see a comparison with Battlefield 2042 that was definitely not perfect smooth on ps5.
thank you DF as usual. 5900x/3080ti here and I am also experiencing the world traversal stutters at 1440p. disabling DXR and enabling full performance mode in Samsung magician (SSD never sleeps) seem to help but only ever so slightly. makes me want to avoid horses and vehicles.
Thought it was just me but holy hell is the stutter/ screen tearing a big issue. Was doing a mission earlier and it got to the point where the whole game just locked up for a good 4-5 seconds then went back to normal.
You playing on ps5? Cause it’s noticeable there
Df the 4K dashboard update for series x on delta insiders gives extra clarity to dashboard and for some strange reason to games as well.
I was amazed by how much detail I was losing before the 4K dashboard update.
Give it a shot or even make a video for that people need to know.
Really?
Placebo
No it does not. I have an XSX and I don't see that difference.
Thanks for the video Alex. Do you think that running FSR on Ultra quality to lower real resolution on an rtx 3080 would allow use of the HD texture pack?
Yes!!! Finally someone explained why the game looks blurry at max settings. Really hope they fix this cause I strongly favour sharp images over what we are getting now from this game.
What's the best setting for HDR Peak Brightness & HDR Paper White overall, I have a LG CX
Jheez. The fact that the traversal game stutter is still a thing after 3 games and 7 years is not a good look.
I mean cyberpunk has been in development longer and its worse than far cry... Travel stutter is so minor compared to other failed games like cyberpunk.
@@ShinyMooTank I have a 3090 and a 10980XE. I haven’t noticed any traversal stutter in CP2077, but the stutter in the last 3 FC games is unbearable in my opinion.
The update on October 14th 2021 actually addressed the cutscene stutter. It’s much better now. Thankfully.
As a quick aside about Ubisoft, shock horror, not being great with PC ports:
Last Christmas I bought the splinter cell collection on PC. Conviction has improper mapping that cannot be changed when using an Xbox One controller (meanwhile Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup from 2003 works fine with it)
On top of that I can only play Blacklist for 30 minutes before being booted out, because the collection they retail for $70 thinks I have a pirated copy.
I play FC6 on PS5, noticed some stuttering in cutscenes or dialog too.
XSX and PS5 make an unbeatable price/performance.
Yes!
Consoles always had better price to performance and this current market doesn’t make things better at all.
I thought this video was in 21:9 but I was just scrolled down slightly.
Been playing on XB1X and it looks and feels great. Hardly any pop in and smooth gameplay. I am not getting the camera pan stutter or any other noticeable stutters. Very pleased so far.
Just enjoy , these guys in df are crazy , I have series s and I have zero problem with resolution but these guys earn money this way
It seems to hold to 30 most of the time on Xbox one X. It is the poor old Xbox One that truly suffers. I think it needs to be put out to pasture now lol.
DXR completely gimped because of the AMD 'sponsorship'... What a surprise. Load of rubbish
And of course 11GB vram and the game looks not so good, A lots of games without that high amount of vram usage looks sharper and better… meh
Citation needed.
The problem with you fanboys is that you jump to emotive and judgemental conclusions all the time, at the drop of a hat. Yes the facts are it's an AMD sponsored title, and the facts are that AMD hardware isn't as accomplished with ray tracing atm. But but is it a FACT that there was some kind of conspiracy or collusion between AMD and the developers to gimp the ray tracing for everybody else? Doing that would harm AMD in the long run, because any future improvements in ray tracing capability will be self-sabotaged. These are multi-billion dollar companies. They don't think RUclips commenters.
@@UberNoodle no need for fanboy accusations. Of course commenting is just like speculation and discussion. Maybe I’m not right I can accept that. There is no weight of a comment. People sometimes take comments too seriously and it’s bad. (AMD and nVidia fanboy fights). But yes it looks like AMD sponsored titles since RDNA2 has bad/low res RT implementation and high VRAM asking, this is maybe a coincidence, but I don’t think so… in the end regular people will play these games, most of them don’t have RX 6800 XT or RTX 3080. It is just the demonstration that “our card is cool in that game etc.” few months from now nobody will care about that. Or when next gen comes. In the end you can play through the game on a RTX 2060 or a RX 5600 XT in 1080p and have a great time.
Great video! Will there be a video on the Battlefield 2042 beta?
only at launch they said
@@ragnar3187 Didn't know that. Thanks
I knew something had to be up with RT! I never pay much attention to the RT shadows, but since they seem to be almost free when RT reflections are on I use them anyways. What I did notice though was that reflections still often times gave me the same SSR artifacts that I specifically wanted them to get rid of. Now I see that because reflections are almost always because of water they just aren't being ray traced, which to me basically defeats the whole purpose of RT reflections. I also noticed that in indirectly lit areas lighting looked disappointingly flat, like AO and GI just don't exist there, and that is something else I really wish had been fixed with RT.
Today I did a full restart of the game for the first time on Series X and the control stutter is gone. I instantly had a flashback to FC4 on PC that after a while of gaming needed a restart to get rid of stuttering
The game has serious streaming texture issues on pc that I hope Ubisoft addresses soon
What brand cpu?
Same here, they keep dropping in quality the more I play. That's on a rtx 3070 and an i7 9700k. It looks like ps2 textures after about 30 min of play :(
No problems on my pc. It's probably lack of vram
@@grahamt19781 Compare the car's speedometer & radio @16:18 on the left vs. the right. That's an RTX3080, 10GB VRAM. That's what the textures look like to many people with or without the HD Texture Pack installed or enabled.
@@Marsson90 no problem my PC is beautiful smooth :)
i suppose they pared back raytracing so it doesn't tank AMD gpu's, which this game clearly targets
Exactly. And the hd textures requiring 11g? What a strange specific odd number .. almost so it sits inbetween the 3080s 10g and the 6700xt and higher's 12g+
@@m0rianne I think it's just a consequence of the technical implementation of the HD textures, not a deliberate choice
the fact that nvidia skimped on vram on the 3080 is on them. the reason i didn't buy a 3080 is because I play at 5120x1440, 10gigs is just not enough for maxed out modern games. I was forced to get a 3090, then again in hindsight it was a good decision as 3080's are the same price i paid for this one at launch.
It just wasn't much of a focus. My guess is they have a patch in the works to improve it and it just wasn't ready for launch.
If you do a rebuild of the ps5 data base and clearer system update cache. The stutters are completely gone. I noticed it when I watched this video and wouldn’t if I hadn’t watched this but after I did two sub options after clicking option 5 in safe mode I can promise you when you now pan the camera like you did in this video the trees and world do not stutter.
Apparently the developers don't have more time to optimize the framepacing (due to complexity of games nowadays), which aggravates the game problems even more since the Consoles usually set at 60Hz, then getting choppy as PC games running at standard displays, it is not a problem for people with VRR displays.
I was wondering what was going on with this game (ps5) now I know it's a camera issue and not a performance issue, hope they fix it :(
HD textures on 4K resolution is giving me muddy textures. I turned it off and it ran and looked better 😅

@@_Chad_ThunderCock i just 3d printed one.. jk
Yeah this is a common issue happening to a lot of people, it seems to happen on both AMD and NVidia cards and turning off HD textures doesn't always fix it.
For me I get consistent textures that don't load in, like the speedometers on some vehicles are always so low res the numbers are just blurs. The player character textures are also consistently low for the clothing and body (yet not the face, that's always high res). Camila Montero is the same, low res clothes/body but high res face.
Looks like we'll have to wait for a patch. This definitely shouldn't be happening.
One year later with a 5800X3D + RTX 4080 this runs at native 4K , max settings, FSR off, ray tracing on, HD textures 120+ fps with zero stutters, technology is there for game engines that can leverage it.
The HD texture VRAM issues were something I noticed pratting around with my 3070 as well, it just straight up ignores 1 to 2 GB of VRAM in favour of not bothering to load textures, I tried fiddling with settings and dropping the VRAM usage as low as 5GB still ended up with the same issues.
Also, this is the first "ray-traced" game I've disabled it on... I'm happy to take a performance hit if it means getting rid of some of the distracting artifacts and whatnot, but this borderline makes things even more distracting, so I'll take the higher fps.
Either way, the game's fun (I'd never played a Far Cry game before, but since it came with the cpu I figured, why the hell not.)
On Pc the cutscenes are so jittery, looks like it goes far under 30fps even tho it says it’s locked. It’s so jarring.
Same on console. When I was playing the other day all the cutscenes were having major frame dips going on. Was making me nauseous.

Good amount of screen tearing on ps5 just like Valhalla and WD legion seems to be a Ubisoft tradition at this point
Exactly!!! I thought I was going crazy messing around with tv and consol settings. But it’s only the newest Ubisoft games that do this shit 😖
Screen tearing was far worse in Valhalla for me on Series X. Definitely noticeable at times in Far Cry 6. But I had to stop playing Valhalla until Ubisoft patched it... but hey, at least they're consistent lol
Yep I only have this problem on Ubisoft games
Yeah, sad for the ps5 players.
I had massive stuttering on FC3 until I went into the nvidia control panel and set the max fps to 61. I've read accounts of lowering to 59 or 58. But, that just exacerbated it.
I kept v-sync on and set the max frame buffer to 5. ...I mention these things because a lot of people have almost the exact same issues in FC4 and beyond.
Screen tear is bad, I think the camera stutter is causing me quite bad motion sickness it needs to be addressed! Playing on XSX.
It's an AMD sponsored title, of course, the Ray-tracing effects are low or not so good. They just can't handle Ray-tracing effects. This is the best what you can can get, from an AMD GPU, with reasonably high fps and Ray-tracing.
Ok sure... 🙄
Uhhh what are you even talking about??
It’s a known fact that AMD GPUs are not as good as nvidias. The comments above mine either are AMD fans or console users lol
I have a 3090 and the first thing I do on every game is turn off ray tracing, its just a gimmick at this point, the performance hit is not worth at all even when using DLSS.
Yes that's right Thomas, everything's a conspiracy. And hey, if you say things with enough technical jargon, it can definitely make wild speculation look factual, right?
What about VRR displays and Series X. Does that help with the FR and Screen Tearing problems?
Yes.
PS5 and PC getting the worst versions.
I haven’t experienced hardly any of the issues with stutter or frame rate issues that they speak of on this video, my series x runs this game damn near flawless, because of VRR I’d imagine.

Damn that camera pan stutter is rough. I can deal with traversal stutter, it doesn't bother me too much, but camera pan stutter is a no go. Glad I didn't buy this day one, will be waiting until that's fixed.
Wait, is camera stuttering what I experienced with Halo 2 anniversary instead of actual framedrops? That could actually explain a lot
They should do a low res raytracing with 40fps for xsx and ps5
No they should not.
