60fps is a must. The thing about Quality modes, even 40fps modes, is that they only look better when you’re standing still. Moving the camera and getting that stuttering ruins the image. I can’t imagine caring so much about a sharper still image, to where I’d be willing to give up such smoother gameplay.

40 fps is mediocre, they are popular because ps5?is a crap and developer dont have vrr until late in the game and digital sony is always looking for excuses for sony mediocre console. Even now vrr is pure crap
My only issue is how short the motion blurring is on 30fps. Basically feels like it’s not even there. A longer shutter speed would really help smooth that more out especially on things like your Ikran’s wings flapping.
@@Nucleosynthese Well yes, of course. My point is about consoles which lock the quality mode at 30fps, and what could be done to improve the fluidity of the visual experience.
I must say, i favor performance fully for this one just because of the first person movement and verticality in platforming which really imo feels better with higher framerate.
Snowdrop really amazed me in terms of quality and capability running the game on console. On my high end pc its just a graphical masterpiece. Game is good and they did an amazing job!
Yes and the XSX now at $350 is even crazier! Keep in mind that it's also a UHD player so it's a steal for that price if you ask me. I got both the S and X along with a Panny B820 which alone is around $400-$500.
I was happily playing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora on my RTX 4080 PC at 60fps, when not a while into a 40 minute gameplay, a pop-up window appeared with Linus Sebastians face and a warning was displayed. "You are a loser "freak", Gamers who play at 60fps need to be shot . "I only game on systems and monitors with 950fps and above". Well, as you can imagine, I was totally shocked. I was having an enjoyable time playing the game Avatar, much like other PC games on my system albeit at 60fps, I don't understand why I'm hated for not having a 989fps VRR display, only having a 60hz OLED. Does me proud, or is that now the wrong thing to say.
I wish you would have touched the 2nd large area. I play on PC with a 4070 and had no issues at all in the jungle running with DLSS Quality at 1440p and ultra settings. As soon as reaching the great plains my fps fell of a cliff. Instead of 60-80 I dropped down to 40 at times. I switched to FSR3 with frame gen and reduce some shadow settings to stay above 60 fps. I would expect the consoles will struggle even more in that area.
This game shows how important custom game engines are. Snowdrop is developed by the same team who makes games using it. Every feature game developers need can be implemented in the core of the engine. To take full advantage of the hardware we need a close cooperation between low-level engine programmers, game designers and artists. To achieve RT in 60 FPS at 1080+ resolution with such high quality assets, a specialized workflow has to be maintained. This is almost impossible to achieve with Unity3D or Unreal Engine 5. Only most experienced teams are able to achieve similar results with general engines. However it takes so much effort that in-house engine would be a better choice anyway.
Really had someone on another video trying to tell me the graphics in this game weren't anything special and that it looks no better than far cry. I swear so many gamers nowadays are just spoiled and blind. This game looks absolutely incredible, every time I play it I find myself just stopping in places and just looking at the scenery.
I have a VRR oled display and the game looks great on PS5 and for the most part feels pretty smooth however it seems to drop out if the VRR range a little too often during intense fire fights which makes it a little jarring. Hopefully a patch cleans this up then it'll be perfect. Feel too many games rely on VRR cleaning up their performance modes.
60fps with Ray tracing enabled including reflections, and global illumination lighting on a $399 to $499 dollar console with this level of graphics is quite impressive and goes to show that when devs put forth the effort at max optimization they can really push these new Console far past what they should theoretically be capable of and this game is probably the greatest example of that to date
@SilverSurfer-mg6ti I think for single player 60 is fine. For slower paced single player stuff 40fps is also fine. But yeah with AMD's Frame Gen tech, 120fps converted from 60 should be totally feasible.
It really is an astonishing-looking game. I've been playing on PC and it just looks fantastic, even with a 6700xt. Just had to figure out that the game defaulted to a weird refresh rate (well, 120hz seems normal, but 119.84 was the correct, and available option) and switching to that removed any stuttering I had. All in all I'm absolutely amazed the resolution the consoles are pushing here too. Oh, and it's pretty fun to boot, even as someone who has zero interest in the movies after seeing the first one in theaters.
If you have a VRR TV it's fine, the performance is incredibly smooth. TBH when they made the game I think they were expecting/hoping most have this feature (it has to be forced on via the PS5 system settings for this title though bizarrely before it's activated. On Xbox it activates naturally fine).
I’m playing at the moment and loving it. I think it has more in common with the Horizon games than Far Cry. Unfortunately I’ve got stuck with a bug on The Missing Hunter quest so I can’t carry on with the story until it’s fixed.
I was pretty bored by Horizon overall but this game is weirdly amazing! It's not for everyone, the dumb ass overly sincere story and difficult to navigate world early on especially; but the combat, stealth, movement, crafting etc, all feels so much more thoughtful than any of the other open world games I've played, all of them pushing you to engage with the world they've built rather than just repeating the same thing that works until the next thing unlocks. It's upsetting that Avatar of all properties gets the technically and mechanically great game.
Definitely has more of a Crysis feel than it does Far Cry. Glad I’m not the only one thinking that. I’ve been playing this game non stop on PS5 in Performance mode with a 120Hz 2.1 monitor and it’s breathtakingly beautiful. I wish Photo Mode was a bit more fleshed out though.
Excellent breakdown. I was going to wait to see how it performed on PS5 before buying but my impatience got the better of me. It’s absolutely stunning, the kind of graphical prowess that differentiates the last gen with the current. We need more experiences like this, even if it is limited by the generic Ubisoft formula. A very impressive showing from Snowdrop, and even more so from the Series S. Despite its limitations it’s proving to be a cracking console for those on a budget.
This is what I was hoping ark ascended would look like and I have to say quality mode on series X is fantastic. It doesn’t even feel like 30fps Incredible game, really feels like Pandora. Well done Ubisoft, give us a sequel set in the oceans
Eh, I think the 30 fps does feel exactly like 30 fps. Try playing on the 60 fps mode for a couple hours and then go back to 30 fps mode. You will notice a big difference.
40 fps is barely playable even with VRR which reprojects the frames and in the process creates a burry image in motion. VRR might give you the illusion of smoother performance when in reality adds a shitload of blur effects and reprojection hiding the jittery frames but adding a ton of artifacts and blur which defeats the whole purpose. It barely feels smoother than 30 fps. A 10 fps difference is marginal. Both 30 and 40 feel choppy AF. Either 60 fps or GTFO
@@CheckmateStallioN I tested it out on the PC with VRR on an LG display, 40fps isn't that great, but 45fps feels very much like 60fps to me, it's remarkable how much of a difference that extra 5fps is actually doing to my eyes. With that said, you can get away with 40fps on smaller displays like the Steam Deck, but on bigger displays, 45fps or above is more ideal.
@@CheckmateStallioN limiting fps at 40 is half the answer, it has to be at 120hz , 160hz and so on , so it displays evenly with consistent frame times.
The best release this year and it's December... It looks perfect, it works nearly perfect and the open world and the atmosphere is a most wanted for all Avatar fans.
I rarely play games on quality mode but as soon as I stepped out of the tunnel of the RDA facility I switched to quality mode and haven't switched back. This game visual spectacle is definitely worth the lower FPS, albeit with motion blur on.
Loving this game so far and have been playing on quality mode without even questioning it 😂 it’s smooth and feels good. Looks like performance isn’t worth trying out, I find unstable frame rates way more distracting than a solid lower frame rate.
I hv an LG C1 55 inch Oled looker. Gonna stick to Quality mode all the way for best and most highest possible immersion on PS5 😍 Mostly a stealth player anyways in Farcry style games which this pretty much is with Avatar skin. Might as well enjoy the best possible optimization available on my machine 😍😍 Will switch to easily enjoy VRR enabled Performance mode for Platinum trophy mop ups.
As always RUclips compression is ruining things. It's especially noticeable in games with heavy dense foliage and detail like this, it was also a huge problem for Forza Horizon 5.
@UbisoftMassiveEntertainment: Feature Request: Please add a separate 40 fps (quality) mode for 120 Hz displays (as done in Horizon Forbidden West, Hogwarts Legacy, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Spider-Man games). With the 30 fps mode having stable performance, hopefully such a 40 fps mode won't require too many cutbacks in quality and resolution.
@@XZ-III for me it's more a matter of convenience to have all games in one place. That said, I don't really care where the game is, as long as I can play it. Battle Net and Steam are always open on my pc, and I open the others when I need them. Not a big deal imo.
Today I will beat the game I'm at 95% story completion.. this game is beautiful. !!! Wish I had a gaming PC for this game honestly. It's the new crisis " can it run avatar 😂"
Anyone else have weird HDR behavior on PS5? On my C1 all the shadows get raised like crazy, the highlights look great but blacks are super raised and it kills the contrast.
Nearly every game I've played constantly has swaying foliage and trees which is totally unrealistic. I know not all games are trying to be realistic but for me it's a strange design choice. It must be very windy in video game world.
We need pro consoles. No way gta 6 will be 60fps on console. It’ll be 1440p 30fps at this rate. Idk how games look only slightly better than they did last gen and yet run hella worse. 800p in 2023 is crazy.
I know I'm in the minority, but I almost always opt for quality over performance when I have a choice. 60 fps is great, but a lot of games can't quite hit that number, and I'd always trade the framerate when I can get visuals like these.
I might have been tempted with the quality mode if the motion blur were better, but I've stuck to performance and I'm pretty happy with it in most cases.
Absolutely incredible game with some of the best visuals I've ever seen in a video game. This feels like the Crysis of this gen (albeit much better optimised than Crysis will ever be). That being said, I've always seen the Series S as a misstep on Microsoft's part and it's no different here. I get wanting a more budget-friendly model but Microsoft's greed in doing so holds back newer games significantly. I work in game development and you have no idea how many times I hear that new features have to be nerfed due to the Series S' specs. It's holding back this gen from truly pushing the boundaries of what should be possible and forcing developers to allocate more resources than necessary on compatibility and scaling which hurts budgets too
Complete cope, what does the series s got to do with optimization of other powerful consoles. It sounds like an excuse than actually making good ports. Alan wake 2 and cyberpunk 2077 are proof that the Xbox series s is a great budget friendly console for casuals
Ubisoft right now is one of the best crossgen, crossplatform, big Triple A game studio. Others like EA and Bethesda aren't doing so well. Usually Ubisoft is the McDonald's of games, it runs well it looks decent and the gameplay is familiar, at worst they make some weird choices, lots of which they undo or say its a miscomunication and at best they push graphical fidelity, create amazing open worlds, give amazing discounts and support games for many years with tons of content, Division 2 is getting "Project Resolve" after 5 years. So far Ubisoft has yet to release a game that is unplayable at launch and the 2 recent releases ran very well. The Crew Motorfest and Avatar.
So the performance mode has motion blur locked out? Why is that? Does it also disable per-object blur? I've never seen anything like this before. 60fps benefits from camera blur as well.. It's not that high of a frame-rate. Also the shutter speed is too short in a 30fps mode, it makes it seem even choppier. Other than that the game looks great on consoles, too. Great work, Tom! 🙂
For those in the store looking to see which console version is best overall, it seems to be the PS5 due to less "frame freezing" during certain sections. Colors looked slightly brighter in some sections of this video. I don't know if it's the console or the capture card. Plus, I heard it has great DualSense controller support that immerses you in the gameplay.
40 fps is barely better than 30. We are talking a marginal difference of only 10 frames. Both are choppy. VRR adds reprojection and blurs out the image in motion in the process which is making things worse. So it creates the illusion that your game runs "smoother" when all it does is hide all the choppy frames behind a ton of blur and artifacts. 60 fps should be the minimum
We need more like this out of Ubisoft. Carefully-crafted, technical showcase, polished games for their major releases, to complement their mid budget or low budget games they also put out.
Try get them to do this while also offering quality across the board. Ubisoft has been failing the last few years for a reason.

60fps is a must. The thing about Quality modes, even 40fps modes, is that they only look better when you’re standing still. Moving the camera and getting that stuttering ruins the image. I can’t imagine caring so much about a sharper still image, to where I’d be willing to give up such smoother gameplay.
The more I play the more this game grows on me.
I can't stop playing

I am about 10 hours in so far on my Series S and it looks beautiful. They truly delivered next gen features on all consoles. Gameplay is fun too, especially when you unlock your ikran.
I can't believe how close the Series S version looks to the others. They did a great job.
You call this next Gen!?
@@MamaSymphonia Exactly, its also very impressive they retain both ray traced GI and reflections on Series S while a lot of developers skip ray tracing all together on the S.
I've personally played it on both Series S and PS5 - while the PS5 obviously does look better, it's unbelievable to me how amazing this game looks on the little Series S as well. Just an absolutely phenomenal job all around.

My thought always while playing this. The bump from 30fps to 40fps felt massive when Horizon Forbidden West put it in. i want that option everywhere now

My only issue is how short the motion blurring is on 30fps. Basically feels like it’s not even there. A longer shutter speed would really help smooth that more out especially on things like your Ikran’s wings flapping.
Try the game on PC maybe. It’s even better looking and you get 60+fps quality mode 🤯
@@Nucleosynthese Well yes, of course. My point is about consoles which lock the quality mode at 30fps, and what could be done to improve the fluidity of the visual experience.
I hope the flickering image artifacts on the Xbox will be fixed...
Especially in performance mode these are extremely annoying & disturbing
I must say, i favor performance fully for this one just because of the first person movement and verticality in platforming which really imo feels better with higher framerate.
Great job by Morgan as always, my fave at DF
The bit rates on RUclips these days are sooo bad you basically need to use the 4k mode unless you want crazy amounts artifacts.

Snowdrop really amazed me in terms of quality and capability running the game on console. On my high end pc its just a graphical masterpiece. Game is good and they did an amazing job!
The fact that the Series S costs 250$ rn with discount and can run games like this is crazy!
Yes and the XSX now at $350 is even crazier! Keep in mind that it's also a UHD player so it's a steal for that price if you ask me. I got both the S and X along with a Panny B820 which alone is around $400-$500.
Indeed it is but tbh I’d rather pay a little more for the better versions from the more powerful consoles.
When it can run games like this at 20 fps 720p I wouldn't call that crazy
"runs"
Now compare that to the cost of any single PC component, the performance per dollar of consoles is insane.
Similar to the horizon games and Guerilla‘s own engine.
Really had someone on another video trying to tell me the graphics in this game weren't anything special and that it looks no better than far cry. I swear so many gamers nowadays are just spoiled and blind. This game looks absolutely incredible, every time I play it I find myself just stopping in places and just looking at the scenery.
It's social media rewarding negative comments.
It's missing bidirectional light transmission through the leaves, hence they look rather opaque. UE has that.
i wish you'd do this for portable pcs (steam deck clones) too.
Love Thom’s videos!
@all devs give us 40 fps option in every game. Like Spiderman or ratched.
Quality 40fps Mode ❤
Preordered this as I enjoy Far Cry / most Ubi games and love the Avatar films, I was not disappointed. Very fun game.
This is so useful when it come to taking a chance on this game. I get so little time to game, this is invaluable ❤
I don't care what people say, this is my personal GOTY and one of my favorite games I've ever played.

Can't wait for 40 & 60fps being standard.

I haven’t seen a game this beautiful since Horizon Forbidden West. The world is soooo full of life.
I'll wait from some further performance patches but It looks very good and seems pretty interesting overall.

One thing I really like is how alive everything feels there bugs and little lizards things and birds everywhere its really cool.
Looks like it could do with a 40fps mode.
Definitely. Every game should include a 40fps mode with how the consoles are handling new games now.

As always RUclips compression is ruining things. It's especially noticeable in games with heavy dense foliage and detail like this, it was also a huge problem for Forza Horizon 5.
Horizon 5 doesn’t look great.

I just can't get over how much the foliage sways for no reason.
It can't possibly be that windy constantly.
Do you have the game or just basing this of videos you have seen. Not like that at all for me.
Series S be touching 720p lol
I know I'm in the minority, but I almost always opt for quality over performance when I have a choice. 60 fps is great, but a lot of games can't quite hit that number, and I'd always trade the framerate when I can get visuals like these.
Getting this for Christmas and I'm so ready for it... on PS5
Yeah, it should've been optional like in most other games regardless of the mode.
I noticed that performance mode had motion blur off by default but I was able to turn it on after a restart
If they somehow manage to get stable 40fps on all 3 systems, that will be cherry on top.
Does anyone even offer 40 fps that’s not Sony? It’s super uncommon. It’s really 30, 60, 120 and the VRR modes on occasion
