  • Ubisoft Massive's Avatar Frontiers of Pandora is a simply incredible game, the studio's Snowdrop Engine entering the next generation age with a stunning level of detail and ray traced lighting. In this exploration of the game, Alex Battaglia takes us through Avatar, showcases its micro and macro-level detail - and in a last-minute change to the video, talks us through the 'unobtainium' max settings preset that addresses almost all of his minor quibbles on the game's visual features.

Thanks for noticing the acoustic rendering features we put in Alex! If you really want to hear the ERs and pseudo-LRs shine through though, you could fire the assault rifle while turning on the spot. Even with RUclips's stereo fold down you can hear the different reflection points render with their own physical-based filter states. All the best, Robert Bantin (Snowdrop Audio Architect).

You guys did an absolutely incredible job with the sound design, even on my lousy headphones and on PS5 (although the PS5 is such a lovely little beast that it looks like it does get away with reactive audio in some games). Every creature's location rendered precisely enough that I can follow animals just from *the sound* of where they are, which in an Ubisoft game with relatively minimal UI is actually kind of important. Since I often use the relatively minimal Exploration mode for my UI, to give this old Avatar movie fan the feel of being a Na'vi. Kudos for the incredible tech work from all teams when it comes to getting Pandora right.

Audio still seems to remain such an underappreciated part of games. I feel like ever since Microsoft dumped hardware audio with Vista things took a downward spiral, as features like Creative's EAX got nuked (and they gave up on ALchemy). I could even tell the difference right on the desktop with Windows sounds.
Thank you for creating something we can point to to show people what good audio in games sounds like, without even needing a HRTF setup.

The power of raytraced audio is underappreciated currently, I'm very excited for how it will be developed and utilised further.
It has the potential (especially in VR) to add striking and captivating realism to games.

The Snowdrop engine team should be given a prize. They handled the DX12 transition way better than many of their counterparts (cough Frostbite), very capable of large open-worlds, great multiplayer capacity, versatile (this engine was used to make the South Park game) and very beautiful. probably because the algorithm didn't think it was relevant to you. i'd been seeing plenty of videos for it, especially over the past two or three months, but I also am on youtube often for na'vi language videos and streams. I almost didn't get the game, thought it would be just "pretty to look at" but when I heard how well the language was spoken in the title song I preordered almost immediately. 13 years and I have never seen spoken na'vi that didn't get micro analyzed for every flaw. The title song? It's the subtitles in the video that are typoed. The rest of the game truly reflects that same level of care.

Lighting looks really flat in a lot of areas.
I'd take something like cyberpunk 2077 pathracing over this. Or the witcher 3 with rtx. Could even make a strong argument for crysis 3, AC unity or fuck it even just heavily modded skyrim.
If the lighting was nicer then I might see why people are impressed by this but so far it just looks like foliage everywhere + raster lighting.

This is the first game in a long time, I’m seriously tempted to double down, and buy on release. Might be an early Christmas present to myself.
Although that said I’m not sure whether I can personally justify spending 70 quid on one game. That’s a hell of a lot of money. I might just wait till January and it will probably hit the sales at some point.

I gave the exploration mode that Alex recommends a try. Try to find my comment on this video for a full impression of it as a brand new player. The short version is that it can sometimes leave you hanging and I wish it did a little more with in-game context clues. Exploration mode is great 9 times out of 10 though. I'm gonna keep at it but it can be tricky for reasons external to the gameplay itself.

I've tried it on my RTX 4090 PC and my PS5 and can barely notice any differences. So nearly everything in this video also goes for consoles.

Snowdrop is indeed insane. People who play Division 2 know how good the game looks even in 2023. Great W for Ubisoft massive.

As a fan of Avatar movies I am very happy that we got opportunity to step into such a beautiful world. Hopefully one day on some future hardware and headsets we will experience it in VR.

I love Snowdrop Engine . I played Division 2 on dx12 for 12 hours straight and didnt notice 1 single micro stutter. Im sure it will be the same for this game!

This is the first open world that really looks like in the trailers to be honest. I have been playing this game since release and OMG and stunned by how good it looks. The environment really is ALIVE and it feels like that. I mean, I was at a river side hunting storm beast and suddenly a big fliyng dragon (not the small ones they ride on) lands at the river, the stormbeast run away like hell I was like "WOW WTF is happening right now!"
Storywise it's ok and very solid.
The only thing I was scared off was how easy you can kill the enemies but you can play the game in hard difficulty and that changes everything. Humans deal damage but not that much the robots will fuck you up. Just how I wanted it.
Game of the year in my opinion

9:00 Another amazing example of this is when I was looking at the fish in the hunter logbook and I notice how the light was being spread over the scales and that honestly kinda amazed me.
