How To Improvise Blues Guitar - These phrasing tips could instantly make you a better player!
Blues guitar improvisation: On the surface, it may appear easy, but how to you make your phrases really sound like the blues?
A few years ago, I discovered an exercise that involves breaking down the three most common subdivisions in a classic blues shuffle and building mini limitation exercises with them, in order to greatly improve your on-the-spot improvisation and musical decision making. This approach can also help you create your own blues licks!
The idea is to initially play a constant stream of notes using a given subdivision. If you’re able to play unbroken phrases with each subdivision, those all-important spaces you leave won’t be because you’ve lost your way or have run out of ideas!
If that all looks like word salad, I promise it’ll make more sense in the video.
This is as much a phrasing and improvisation exercise as it is a fretboard navigation exercise.
I let the backing track run throughout the video and at the end, so you can try out some of the ideas for yourself.
Please note that there is no TAB for this lesson as all of the licks are improvised (including the mistakes!)
Have fun!

You're one of the best blues players/teachers on RUclips! This will really help my phrasing!
Thank you very much!
huh.... I been playing 30 years and this was still helpful. Mostly a metal player but Im sick of being terrified every time a blues jam erupts and people are looking at me like "you're an awesome metal player, so you MUST know the blues! Do something awesome!".... My brain is like "shit....ok, sweep pick something". LOL.
Nice lesson.
Thank you very much. I’ve always sat somewhere between the bluesy side of things and the shred stuff. Which often results in being accused of playing ‘too many notes’.
You are such a great teacher and wonderful guitarist!!!! Great! You should be millionaire and have million views
Thank you very much for the kind words.
Surprising how much you can put in to those beats. Love Janet xx

Thank you very much!
Haven't even got to the lesson yet but just from seeing the intro I gotta say... That's a beautiful guitar dude!
Thanks very much. Gordon Smith Guitars are the best!
I’m an open mic level blues player. What I’ve noticed is on nights I’m playing well the 24, 48 bars, the song is over before I know if I’m improving well
Bobby I've been watching your videos recently including your live session with brit floyd. Are you left handed or right handed? Its a lil bit confusing to me 😂
Hi, I only play left-handed, but I horizontally flip my lesson content.
Lettering on headstock reversed?
I’m left handed.
@@BobbyHarrisonGuitar Was the video clip mirror-image reversed then?
Yes, it was. It’s just easier for most people to follow if the image is flipped.
