In this lesson I want to show you how to begin improvising over a 12 bar blues by focusing on the minor pentatonic scale and emphasizing chord tones during a 12-bar blues progression. Targeting specific notes-the root (1), fourth (4), and fifth (5) of the scale-that correlate with the A, D, and E chords in a blues progression, he highlights the importance of playing notes that match the underlying chords to sound more melodic and intentional.
He provides a step-by-step approach, including locating the A, D, and E notes in pentatonic patterns, applying the concept in a quick-change 12-bar blues backing track, and using techniques like slides, bends, hammer-ons, and vibrato to enrich the sound. He suggests that mastering this in one position before moving across the fretboard and learning in different positions is key to improving.
You can download the video backing track used at the link below.

Thanks for watching!
John
One of the best videos I’ve seen. Makes it very simple.
So much info in a short video, you won't find a better blues channel than this, many thanks John.
Great lesson! This issue I think all of us beginners have is we have zero idea what key we are in. I can hear the change... but is it a D, an A... an E? No idea. Your chord changing visual is great and I wish we could custom build it for every backing track we have ;)
3:30. 3:40
This is the best 12 bar blues lession to get you on your way ever thanks so much for this ❤
I have paid thousands of Dollars on lessons but nobody has ever bothered taking the time to explain these fundamentals to me. Thank you very much!!! Keep up the good work so that this art of playing guitar can be passed on to the next generation. Well done!!! Encore!!!
Thanks so much!
Amen brother most guitar teachers don't know how or what to teach
I really like this. Thanks for pointing out the notes.I have been learning to find the places to find like all the A's and D', etc all over the fretboard. The bends and slides are helpful too.
Honestly, you make it as bright as day light. You have shown me the key👍10/10 Thank you.
Great frickin lesson brah, ride on !awesome thank you sir!
Exactly what I need to help me get into trying solo over the chord sequence. Thank you
Bravo bravo great lesson
This is musical gold for beginners.
literally the best intro to 12 bar lead, so useful!
Thank you very much for your lesson.
Absolutely awesome great vid
Makes sense.
Thank you very much for the advice to target the important notes for the chord change. Very logical so that we are not wandering aimlessly. Cheers from Indonesia.
Thanks for the great lesson! first time I have seen you.. subscribed. Gotta ask though.. am I the only one though that thinks that Strat sounds terrible? Guess it could just be my speakers but that thing really grates on my ears.
Very helpful, thanks!
Excellente' 🎸 🤘 Really, anyone just starts to 'hear' things they want to do or where some version of the Chuck Berry lick, etc. fits in. Amazing what's out there for guitar players! Life is good!
Hey John, Awesome lesson!! 😎🙏
This has been a lightbulb moment for me. Thank you, you've just got me past a plateau.
same, this dude is amazing, i dont get why there are so many''quick lick'' videos out there yet nobody talks about this. Licks are kinda useless if you dont know the context and how to use them
Excellent thanks
Really! If Id seen this years ago, I’d actually have gotten somewhere by now!
Extremely useful, especially for beginners. Thanks!
Awesome advice. Thanks.
Even playin' for years, this is so sweet tonwise and I like your style😃👏
Thank You!
Good info.. thanks!
Finally.....follow the bouncing ball I've been looking for....thank you 🙏
Great lesson.🙏
Great lesson
Simple and clear, thanks 🙏🎸
Sometimes we forgot the basics, this is what I need the most, thanks John!!!. By the way, I NEED THAT T SHIRT, that frase fits perfect for me!🤣👍👏👏👏
What does it say? The older i am, the more blues... ?
@@tarikdervovic3064 The older i am, the more blues I jam!
Cool 😎
i need one too :D
Is there a way to get this metronome from the bottom of the screen.
I’m not a guitar player but as a blues harmonica player this would be an awesome tool to help me with timing.
thanks. subscribed
Obrigado John, gosto muito de suas aulas, infelizmente não tem aulas em lingua portuguesa
Nice
is this the chord tone concept? is the 12 bar blues a tonal composition compared to pop songs today mostly are modal
I want to join ur blues courses
Where is yr wed sight ..please post ..ok
Landing on the root of chords. Exercise example: 2:57
Great Lesson … do you have tabs for this ? Would like to play this 😊
Thanks! There are no tabs for this lesson.
Great stuff. So, if we're playing A Minor pentatonic scale. Does that need to be over AM chord, or A Major chord? Or does it not make a difference? Cheers.
Thanks! It works no matter what kind of chord you are playing over.
Where can i get the tabulature for this lesson?
There is no tab for this lesson.
Do you have you strat tuned down a half step?
I don't
How do I get all access pass and what comes with it
You can find out all the details here. www.learningguitarnow.com/all-access-pass/
It always looks so easy until I pickup my guitar! 🎸 😬
I was just wondering how you recorded the video the mic setup etc..?
Ive tried recording using zoom for the video but more than one sound source doesnt work well.
Would like to talk over the video as well if possible.
Cheers for any setup tips... 🙂👍
Yeah there can be lot involved. I record my vocal mic, guitar, and the backing track all to separate tracks so I can mix them after I've recorded.
@@Learningguitarnow cheers for the reply.
Yes Im trying to get the best setup right now.. so are they all going into a DAW...?
I know a lot of people use Logic Pro Im on windows so looking for an alternative... 🙂
Yes all the inputs are going into a Motu M4 using either Reaper or Studio One. I use both for different things. The backing track is playing on a Macbook with the audio going into the interface. Takes some trial and error to find out what will work. I do all the audio and video editing on PC :)
The Motu also has Loopback so you could play the track and record the computer audio into Reaper which I do sometimes as well.
@@Learningguitarnow great yes I'm finding that takes a bit of messing about to see what works thanks a lot for your explanation I'll look into the Motu M4 I have a Line 6 GX which is working well for guitar and mic - just getting the backing track where I casn play/pause and play again while not affecting the recording - thats the main issue I'm having..:) I'll need to try running the track through my interface and see if I can get that working - cheers..:)
What's written in that shirt??
The Older I Am the More Blues I Jam :)
@@Learningguitarnow 😂😂 good one 👍🏽
I'd disagree with that there's a far easier way for beginners using the basic open A chord shape at the 2 fret and the pentatonic scale that surrounds it then just shift the whole chord and scale up to the 7 fret for D when improvising and then upto the 9 fret for the E . All 3 chords shapes are the same and the scale pattern is the same.
Don't really have to think about the notes just where the chord and scale is. All of the notes in the chords are always under your first finger so finishing a lick is easy.
Eventually you'll be able to change scale when the chords changes without thinking, I've been doing it this way for years and I don't know what notes are in the chords or scales .
Thanks for the tip. That is quite easy..
Not sure I follow. A RUclips video from you would certainly help
I thought the 12 bar progression was like this A A A A D D A A E D A E
This is called a quick change 12 bar. Very common
Sorry to burst ya Buble but this is not Blues fit for a 5 year old
