Good video. I picked up this same gun today and put 50 rounds through it. I was most impressed with your results at 7 yards. That’s pretty much the only distance I practice with handguns. I doubt I would need longer distances for defensive purposes

  • @fmgpubs

I tried original magazines, a 20-round one and a ten-round one I had and they worked fine in the SA-35. I also tried the 15-round SA-35 mag in an original Hi-Power I have and it worked fine so I’d say all the mags are interchangeable, at least according to what I can tell.
I can’t imagine ever seeing a 10mm version as some are asking about. Without substantial modifications the frame and slide simply can’t accomodate it. Even the .40 which Browning introduced cracked the original frames and forced them to go to a specially hardened cast frame. But they still didn’t sell well. And frankly, with today’s high performance 9mm ammo, there’s no need for a .40 in this platform. Had good success hitting my 100 yard gong (12” in diameter) yesterday from a rest. Well, at least most of the time I hit it …. Roy H.

    • @shwesq
      @shwesq 2 года назад +1

A 10mm SA-35 wouldn't make sense. The SA-35 is a relatively light and svelte pistol, notwithstanding its all steel construction. Stretching it out to digest the longer 10mm round and beefing it up to handle that round's .357 Magnum level power would turn it into something very different from what it is and was designed to be.

Enjoyable show, no irritating tacticool wannabe garbage. Can I give you a tip? When I first started shooting PPC I was advised to hold my head up straight because at an angle the eyeball gets distorted which can effect consistent sight picture consistency. I'm 60 something myself and fully know about problems with focus on sights and target. If the target is sharp then both sights are too blurry to be much use. Its a bummer to not shoot as accurately as I once could.
One question: possible to take the barrel out and show the bullet ramp?? My BHP from 1983 had the old style ramp designed solely for FMJ which are the worst defensive bullet. I dumped a lot of money into the HP but never could get it to be reliable with HP ammo. Cheers!!

This gun is exactly the same size as an original Hi-Power. The mods to the hammer means no more hammer bite too! The trigger is re-worked (with no mag disconnect or firing pin block) and mine is about five pounds and feels about like the custom triggers on my worked over original Hi-Powers. It’s smoothing in a bit too as I’ve shot it.
I also hope this re-introduction inspires others to think about bringing back some other classic designs. How about a “Modern” P-38? Or an aluminum frame Walther PP in .22 LR with good sights. Ha! Roy H.

A relative owns a Belgian made Hi Power that was bought in Madrid after WWII. It had a heavy trigger, small sights, a 13 round mag and worn grip panels. The trigger was lightened by means of removing the magazine safety part. The sights were replaced with MMC low profile ones.
Fifteen round mags by another maker were eventually acquired and Herret grips replaced the original pair.
The pistol began to shoot good groups afterwards.

The demand for the Tisas HiPower, must have convinced Springfield Armory, that there was still a market, for the HiPower. In spite of the Tisas extractor problem, it was easily fixed with a Cylinder & Slide extractor. I had my Tisas so modified and it doesn’t miss a beat. It is actually more accurate than my BHP. I got the SA 35 that I'd ordered yesterday and ran out to the gun club. Very sweet firearm! I was fortunate and paid MSRP. I was told that mine was the only the second one sold in our state (Oregon). I did have one problem - with a full mag the first round hung up and wouldn't load until I fiddled with it. No problem with only 14 in the mag.

I just picked the SA 35 up yesterday and went to the range and I had failure to feed right out of the box on the secon round. In total I had 3 failures to feed shooting a box of 50 rds of Federal ammo. Worst performance out of any handgun I have owned. Going back to Springfield!!

I carried the Hi-Power (L9A1) as a personal weapon for almost 30 years and instructed on it. I thought it was a great pistol, with high capacity at the time, and am pleased to see it has been resurrected (and improved) by SA. Just wish I was in a country that allowed ownership of such an iconic pistol...
If I did, I'd get one in a heartbeat! 👍

    • @StryderK

I just bought mine. I bought the SA-35 over the Girsan MC P-35 because of the trigger. One of the biggest complaint of the original Hi-Power was the magazine to trigger disconnect that made the trigger mushy and hard to pull. One of the smartest decision SA did was removing that feature so the trigger is now buttery smooth! A slight take up, then a smooth 6lb wall that’s easy to break. It’s now my second favorite 9mm behind my Berettas (M9, M9A3, and 92S).

Thanks, great video, I would love to get myself an SA35. You have convinced me that it is a really good handgun. If you don't mind my asking, what is the device that you have attached to your eyeglasses? I suspect that you and I are about the same age. When I look through any iron sights these days I see a fuzzy rear sight, a fuzzy front sight and a fuzzy target. Does that thing help you aim any better?

Duane, it’s called an Eyepal (www.eyepalusa) and I can’t recommend them enough. They just stick to your glasses and it gives you a aperture to look through, sharpening the sights. Amazing, actually. Check ‘em out online. Roy

Mine is an extremely early production one, before they were released. I’ve got about 2000 or so rounds through mine now with no issues. I think if there is any sort of extractor issue just buy a Cylinder & Slide set, and it’s an easy fix. Roy

I don’t know if anybody’s going to do anything to bring the Hi-Power into the modern era of shooting. The 1911 got an update with the 2011 but sadly, the Hi-Power has largely been forgotten and ignored. FN didn’t even bother to update the design, they just gave up and quit making it. They could have modified it and given it a larger capacity magazine too but they didn’t. I wonder if this handgun could handle +p ammo? The only bad gun is a gun that doesn’t work and I like the nostalgia and all but this gun doesn’t do enough of what I need it to do to justify buying it. I’ve never really been a collector per se. I own several guns and all of them are tools that I use. None of them are safe queens. I won’t own a gun I wouldn’t shoot regularly and I wouldn’t shoot this one regularly.
