Alice in Chains is the epithomy of the 90's aleternative band!!! Killer mid tempo groovy rythm section, a guitarrist with an enourmous tone, headbanging riffs and bluesy solos, and a misterious and intriguing frontman who can sing his soul off his ass. All of that making a beautifull mix of melancholicly insane music.
I don't know that I'd say they're the epitome of 'alternative', but definitely the epitome of hard rock. They were adjacent to alt-rock, but I think they're way too heavy and nasty to call 'alt rock'. Radiohead is probably the epitome of alt rock.

And I agree completely with the fact that AIC define what a Hard Rock Band meant in the 90's, , by alternative I wanted to use a more broad term than just grunge, to mean the 90's rock movement in general. Cause in that sense AIC has all the classic elemets of a big 4 piece mastodon as Led Zep, with that great 90's melacholic approach also everywhere in their music. I don't know if you get my point! Mike Starr is the baddest bass player I have seen. He puts on a performance that you just can't get enough of. I could listen to Chains 24/7! Mike makes that bass kick ass! Love you forever Mike! You are deeply missed. Ledgend in my heart always

Layne was such a chameleon. He has so many different looks and I have to say I thought he wore all of them well. Long hair, short hair, dreadlocks, shaved head... didn't matter.
