- I’ve been wanting to get into welding for a number of years now and today I finally tackle my fist welding project. I build a welding cart. / fabrication table combo. I have limited space in The shop for metal working and so I needed something a place to store the welder and gas bottle as well as be able to fabricate things all in one unit

For no experience, those welds look good! Just keep in mind what I learned years ago. “A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain’t!” Keep up the great work. I always enjoy the channel and content!
Ahahahaha!! 👍
Great project Adam! One thing you may want to do is insulate the cylinder from the cart with a rubber product. The reason is so that you don’t run the risk of an arc burn taking place on the cylinder due to the cylinder being steel and grounding can create an issue that could cost you hundreds of dollars to purchase a new cylinder. Once a cylinder has the smallest indication of any arc, the cylinder can no longer be filled. I spent 42 years in the Welding Supply business and have seen this happen a lot. Great job on the project.
Great tip
The welds are fine. So many people are hung up a pretty welds when all you need is good penetration. For a welding cart those look great. I may steal your design 😎. Good stuff.
Nice job!!! now your neighbors are going to be bringing over old lawn mower parts.😂
😂
My neighbors do that and I don't know how to weld. Never stopped them.
Practice and learn is all you gotta do. No one was born a professional welder. Looks way better than my first welds
I'm not a welder but I ran a department that managed all the welding fixtures and tooling for 50 welders. So I know what a good weld looks like. Adam's grade for his first project: A And it really helps when you have three buddies you can lean on for guidance. Nice work Adam!
Awesome results Adam, especially for your first project. To your question, "what do I need?"... Clamps, clamps, clamps
You can never have enough clamps
@@steveleibold8374 When you think you have enough clamps. . .you don't. 😁
I'm heavy into woodworking interested in welding. Seems like my problem of never having enough clamps will transfer to welding too haha
I'm not a 100% sure. But I believe a metal grinding chop saw spins at 8000 rpm ( ish) And a metal chop saw with a blade at 1500 rpms.
You may end up going through blades quite quickly over spinning them.
Obviously, it works, but may cost a lot more as the blades are expensive.
Cart looks great 👍 .
Have a Jesus filled day everyone
Greg in Michigan
This^. Get a dedicated metal blade chop saw.
I agree. The metal cutting blade is made to run slower. Will it work? Yes. Will it last as long as it should? No
They do make an appropriate diamond impregnated metal saw that is designed to run at the higher speeds of the old saws like his. They dont cut as fast, but have less dust and heat.
I think you are correct as well. Can be a bit dangerous at that high RPM
legit
A phrase I first heard from Lucky Costa on Hot Rod Garage: "A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain't." I live by that.
Not a welder, but I've watched them argue and critique others for years, and I think you did a great job!
Nice job. Just want you to add one more item to your cart, that being a fire extinguisher. Then it will always be available when welding. Take care
Turned out great. Nice work! Going to be a great addition to your shop and skillsets.
Table might be a lil short, he is 6-5 ya know.
I like it a lot Adam. You did very well.
One of the best DIY things I did in my life was to take a welding class in high school in 1969.
Never a broken weld because I over build everything.
I think the shop classes that Adam took in high school have given him the confidence to try just about any new skill
Great project. I see you have a trigger operated angle grinder now but you are breaking your own rule already. One handed angle grinding. You don't want another visit to the ER. Take care.
I started welding when I was 12, 40 couple years ago. Only used stick but, I am so jealous of the new welding helmets and the fact that you do not have to mess around flipping the helmet down and hoping your hand did not move. Great welds for sure. One thought is the corners on your table. They look like hip diggers. Maybe, smooth out the corners so you don't put a nice gash on your hip.
Nice job brother! I picked up hobby welding and metal fab about 18 months ago as an outgrowth of making knives for a hobby. Self taught through RUclips videos like this. I’ve made a few steel welding and work tables, I made a trailer hitch mount bbq for the RV, and done some small side hustle jobs for friends. It’s a lot of fun! I’m no professional but you did a very good job in this project!! God bless and keep the content coming!
Have a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket handy. 1 thing I regret not getting years ago is a welding table. They have holes laid out so that you can clamp your project square and solid. They are available many places, including Harbor Freight, for a reasonable price. A good table makes it much easier to hold your project in position. You can probably find one that will go on the top of the table that you made.
Thanks for the video
What a great project Adam! You’ve inspired me to go to my local community college and look at some night classes. As far as tools, and somebody may have mentioned this, I’ve seen a hammer that has a coil spring looking handle. I think it’s for knocking off slag and so forth. That said, maybe you even mentioned it yourself and it just went over my gray hairs.😂 I need to say to, I am so incredibly proud of you, I can imagine how your parents feel on how you’ve really made a name for yourself with your channel and you were able to walk away from your 9 to 5 and spend that time with your your family. My son did that as he was a salesman for a big big car dealership in the Midwest here. He had to get permission to go to his kids school programs, or get time off to go to doctor visit with his wife and kids. He was comfortable enough that he went out on his own. He started flipping cars out of his garage and by the third month he was making 30K a month. He did all of that, the 3 months in 14 hours. He now has two lots and is extremely successful and very, very happy. He can’t wait to get to work in the morning just like I’m sure you can’t wait to get out in the wood yard or the garage and do the things you love. See you in the next one! 💙😊
Really a nice story and yes we are very glad that Adam is doing well. I think it says a lot about the parents that have raised a level headed person with a good attitude.
So congratulations on your son’s success.
Thank you for supporting Adam!!!
Wow! Looks way better than my first welds. Nice job Adam 🤠👍
I've got several buddies that know how to weld. I personally never took the time or had the opportunity to learn this trade. Super useful and you've shown that a beginner doesn't have to break the bank to learn this useful trade. I think your work was perfectly fine!
Great project! One note - galvanized steel, such as the casters potentially and the carriage bolts - wire brush to remove the galvanizing/zinc first. Otherwise, you’re breathing in horrible vapors that will wreck your body.
Nice cart Adam. I’m not a welder, only dabbled in it at work a few times but your welds look good and I appreciate the extra customization. Keep going, I enjoy your content and almost always learn something new.
I like that style of cart/table. If you have the room it’s a good one. You did well putting it together too.
The thing with welding, always, is distortion, but as far as I could tell you had it pretty much under control. However, I would never weld the castors to the cart. Apart from welding plated metal - so perhaps introducing stuff into your weld pool you don’t want in there - if you had drilled your plates to bolt on your castors, it would allow you to shim the castors to allow for slight distortion. Sometimes one 1/16” shim on one leg makes the difference between a trolley/table/cart that rocks on its legs and one that sits firm on a level floor. You don’t need to ask me how I worked that out… Les 🇬🇧
Good work adam you have caught on quick some of my favourite days at work are when I am fabricating and welding makes the time fly by. Pick up some c clamps and some anti splatter spray
I've always felt that if you can work with wood and weld/fabricate, you can build just about anything. I feel a lot of people are intimidated by welders, but most don't realize how approachable and simple it can be, especially with the welders that are around now. The jigs, tools, MACHINES you can build... You've elevated the capability of just about every project from this point forward! Keep up the great work. 🍻
nice looking bench and cart combination. welds good.
Your first welds look much better than my first ones looked 🤣. That cart was a great starter project and you knocked it out of the park!!! It's always nice having skilled friends to give you ideas and man they paid off!!! Great JOB!!!!
Great video and good work - I'm impressed with your first project.
Adam, that table/your work is impressive!! Great job - can't wait to see what you'll do with this!! God bless y'all! 🙏♥️👍🌟
I’ll never weld but I’m here to give you a thumbs up.
I'm a certified 111 welder, so naturally that means that I am qualified to speak on all things welding. No, but seriously; your welds look fine. Don't let people discourage you. Everything will get better with practice and time.
I think you did a fine job putting that cart together and your welds look pretty good for a beginner. The only way to get better is to keep doing it, practice makes perfect.
Absolutely nothing wrong with those welds. Hell there better than some stuff that's welded by I'm thinking professionals . Some of my welds look like that too some worse some better. You built it lot cheaper than having to buy it. Great job love it. 👏👏👏👏👊👍✌️🙃🇨🇦
Adam, great video on welding! Inwould add a chipping hammer for slag when you go to stick welding, c clamps, a wire brush. I would also put a piece of rubber under the cart to help prevent arc burn. I didnt see where you checked fornsquareness on your project, i may have missed that with my small phone. Again great video!
Very Impressive! I just might build a similar cart. Remember this. No one cares more than you, about your welds and what they look like. I don't grind much. Especially when the weld locations are mostly out of plain view. Welds are supposed to be strong. It's a plus when they look nice. Great job, for such minimal experience. KK
Awesome job Adam on tackling a pretty elaborate welding project. I thoroughly enjoy the variations in your video content. There's always something different and interesting to look forward to.
Damn good job Adam for your first run. Doug is quite the Jedi master😅😅😅
Great first project Adam! Well explained and executed. Nice to have three good mentors that you can learn from. Lots of good comments but I’ll add one more. Knees on concrete over a number of years never end well….experience talking here. I started wearing knee protectors too late in life but I highly recommend them. Being comfortable while welding does make the welds look better! Two thumbs up on another great video!
The one thing that would help you is adding a 110v 4 plug outlet with a extension cord for all your power tools. Having one cord to the wall outlet eliminates tangled cords while trying to work.
Effort brings experience! Nice inspiring video for trying new mediums of independence in making useful projects, and starting your journey with moderate investment. Enjoyed it!
So far so good. Suggestion, move the placement for the trigger and change the angle. Bracket mounted flat along with so close to the top and edge will allow you to catch it and possibly damage or break that expensive handle. It will also be in the way working on the top. I personally would not want the tank there either, but that's a matter of what your doing or how. Nice to have it though.
I've been a professional welder/fabricator for 46 years, your welds look fine! What you should do differently though when you're fabricating a frame is tack only the very outside corners first. When you've tacked it then measure diagonally corner to corner to make sure it's square. Very easy to adjust it when it's only tacked, extremely difficult to square after it's welded!
That sounds like great advice, Bruce!! 👍🌟
A great beginning Adam! Good luck with your new addiction!
I am impressed by that metal cutting blade 👍
I have that model at home as well, had it for about a year, I am really happy with it, it works great for all your at home projects
Nice job hometown!…not shabby at all….new steel is easy too weld….I got one tip for you….go to electric supply house and make up at least a 25’ extension cord…step up the wire size one thicker….roll cart out side and weld…..you don’t want to burn down your shop like I almost did….let me tell you…when you turn around and are staring at a top to bottom fire it gets the heart pumping!…..that splatter goes everywhere!
Nice job Adam. Looks like you have good plans for the shop. Stay safe.
Nice job Adam, looks great 👍
Welding is fun and it's easy. I've saved myself thousands over the years repairing heavy equipment and my tractor. The quotes I received from professional welders for repairs are laughable. Some of my amateur welds are 4 years in and still going strong!
Btw your welding cart came out awesome! Love it
Very well done! Welding is a practiced art. And as you said, practice the ABCs of welding-Always Be Comfortable. Odd positions make for iffy welds and higher injury potential.
That's a nice cart Adam. I would like to make one at some point when I have the shop space for mine. I have a harbor freight 110v flux core welder and it suits my needs. I think I would use it a lot more if it was out and ready to go with a set up like that. Always great to get tips from someone knowledgeable like Doug. Keep up the great work. I thoroughly enjoy your channel and content.
QOL ideas for the cart:
Handles on the short side opposite the tank to make it easier to move and position precisely.
Do the wheels lock? If not then consider a couple locking wheels or some mechanism to hold the cart in place.
Rubber/Padding/blunt the edge of the top and all the exposed corners to protect yourself and stuff you might bump into. Those just looks like the kind of corners I'll impale myself on occasionally.
Fire Extinguisher mount, just in case.
Custom Cup Holder 😁😁
You did an awesome job! That's an wonderful cart! Again great job!
I think you did a great job welding for your first project. Keep it up.
Very, very nice! The welds will hold for this project. I always seem to need to re-learn how to strike an arc when I plug in the welder.👍
Nice work! In my opinion, leave the cart unpainted, as it will get covered in spatter and weld tacks, and without paint it's easy to grind those away when you're done. Plus, you can ground the welder to the cart, which makes for easy grounding of small projects that can't hold the clamp.
When I was a steel fabricator we used a cheap $100 stick only welder, it wasn't perfect, but they were light and easy to carry with us, and if we dropped it, no biggie, we could buy 12 for the price of one Lincoln. The more expensive welders really only make a difference if you want to go from "good enough" to "perfect" welds.
Welding is definitely fun, I’ve been self taught and definitely have a ton to learn. I do have a similar saw though and they are so much nicer than the abrasive wheels. Careful with that angle grinder lol. I’ll be adding 220 to my garage soon! The welds look better than mine so far.
Nice project! Those welds seem pretty solid. Good work! An idea I have for you for your next project is a fire blanket divider. It Seems like being in a primary workshop is a cause for flames, but I think it'd be a great project idea that'll give you some more practice, if not prevent any disaster from occurring. Enjoy your content. Keep it up!
Next up would be a low cost plasma cutter. Research the different types of plasma arc starts though.
Great job Adam! I’m totally going to use this design. I have about as much experience as you.
Hi thanks for your content. I checked out your Amazon link and noted that saw blade’s max rpm is in the 1800 range. You might check your cutoff saw to make sure it is not running at 3600. Many of the abrasive saw run at this speed. Be safe and thanks again.
Adam - this goes to all those who Will judge you too harshly. We all started somewhere, I suspect even Doug didn't come out of the womb laying down 'Dimes'. LOL, I think you did just fine, better than I could have done.
Great project and the welds look ok to me. The key is if they hold up over time. I learned to weld in Ag shop in high school - early 70’s.
The welder unit looks perfect for a DIY use.
You may need to get something to chip off the slag and a good wire brush. And have a container with some water in it to dip small items in to cool them off.
I love your shop
Considering you are a novice, those welds look bloody good mate! And like the other guy said, nothing that a grinder and paint wont sort out 😉although I probably would bother. Well done!
I have a bench vise on my welding table. Your welds look great!
I think the welds are looking good. My welds are not the best looking, but things stay together. Thanks for sharing
I would recommend getting comfortable with stick before mig. It will be more challenging to start but will help in long run
Awsome video hope your holidays were good an keep up the great content. I feel like your always trying new things an your channel has a wide range of topics. Thanks again from VA
Nice job on the new cart/table
Great job on your first project Adam. It's a skill you will really enjoy. Get some Vise Grip welding clamps... they come in very handy.
I dont know if its been said yet but....... Round those corners before you figure out WHY 🤣....looks good so far...ideas will pop in your head all the time now lol
Nice job. Good project for sure
Good afternoon Adam, looking good from this side of the Lens. I like the Simplicity and Functionality suited to your needs. You’re always learning and always up for a challenge showing us the path without making it feel too detailed, this is one reason your channel is so interesting. When I saw you with the angle grinder, I cringed a bit. 😕 One thing I’d also add is a place for a quick access 🔥Fire Extinguisher🔥. 😀👍👍👍
Thanks Richard,
I do have a fire extinguisher in the shop
Looks like you have a good welding teacher
Great job
Always great to start something new.
Yes if that Angle grinder left me in stitches I would hang it as well 😂
Great looking table👍
Fantastic job! Always hard to learn a new skill
Great video Adam. I thought your welds looked pretty good. You are building another skill set that will help you in your goal of self-sufficiency. Anyway stay safe healthy and warm. Hope you didn't get all that snow yesterday. Bill H from Cranberry Township
Hometown Acres... I have the Arccaptain MIG 200 and I can say it is an awesome welder. I still need to build me a bigger/better welding table. I have a small one from Harbor Freight but it is just too small.
Looks good. I have a few suggestions. A handle so you can hang clamps on and go get 2 more angle grinders so you have one set up as a cut off, flap disc and a wire wheel.
That's some good looking weld's
Arcaptian seem worth looking into, especially when I am a shade tree welder
Hey brother. On the first bead that you ran, turn the wire speed down just a bit so it’s not so built up on the current heat/voltage setting. You’ll be stacking dimes before you know it. Also, it might not seem like a big deal, but even with the steadiest of hands it is best to place your support hand knuckles, pinky finger or forearm on the project, then move the nozzle on a dry run real quick from start to finish on the bead your about to run to ensure that you won’t need to reposition your support hand during the weld. This will give you a much straighter bead and control when your doing a stitch weld. 👍🏻
Lookiung good!
Adam, maybe a couple files looking 👀 dang good 👍 on the welding table 😮😊❤
Nice work! *Machine*
Nice... think Im gonna jump on board this project. I do think your bench needs a good vice though, in my experience. 👍
Your mig and tig are gas shielded so you want air flow at almost nothing. Your stick or arc is great for welding out side. I recommend 6011 welding rods they eat through anything.
Not bad for a beginner we all started the same way SUGGESTING rounding the sharp and pointy corners the first time you walk into it you will be glad you did it will still hurt but it won’t be a hospital trip for more stitches 🧵
You just gave me/sparked an awesome idea for an adjustable height table.
And the Diablo, I haven't one got yet, friends sing their praise but I will be getting one soon.
The fiber disc do like to walk and just don't last long enough.
I'm thinking of modifying and doing an adjustable hieght table via a bottle jack and locking pins.
I could lower and stowe under a work bench.
Good job!
Those welds looked really good for a beginner, you'll only get better with time and experience. One thing you should get is a welder's cap, the last thing you want is a piece of hot slag burning your scalp or neck.
Much better than my welding. Especially since I haven’t done any.
A pile of clamps, including a variety of vise grip clamps. Wire brushes, splatter spray, steel rule and in case you ever want to learn brazing and bending…. A fire wrench!
Great job
Just a thought on your metal cutting saw. If that used to be an abrasive cutting saw with abrasive disks, the new tungsten carbide, cutting blade is designed for lower rpm's than what that saw runs, that saw usually spins about 3600 rpm, and the the blade you have on it now is only rated for like 1200 to 1500 rpm.
Depending what you plan to create, I'd suggest you get some magnetic 90 holders. They help you keep the inside corners at a 90 when doing your tacks and initial exterior welds.
Nice job! That Diablo blade cuts nice, but I couldn’t find the link you mentioned in the description.
