    Some people are still learning the difference between "sex" and "gender". This is way over their heads.

    • @POPGOES
      @POPGOES 9 лет назад +83

      By definition, they are exact synonyms. Gender was invented to avoid taboo when referring to children as "sexes". What difference do you believe they have?

    • @yaya-mk3nn
      @yaya-mk3nn 9 лет назад +40

      Gender is what you identify as/what you feel like, wheras sex is just your body. For example, a biological male may identify as a female, making her sex make, but her gender female.

    • @Its_Shazar
      @Its_Shazar 9 лет назад +39

      Minus Anti They are used as synonyms by people who don't know the difference. 'Sex' is whether your born with male or female parts. 'Gender' can be chosen by the person based on how masculine or feminine he/she/they feel(s).

    • @Its_Shazar
      @Its_Shazar 9 лет назад +24

      Lano Stone It's not my definition of 'gender'; it's *the* definition. It's called 'gender identity', not 'sex identity', for a reason.

      Skittles Poppanda But that's really rude. I, for one, Identify as a man but my gender expression is feminine. Some people like me might be too scared to correct you and then feel like shit when you misgender them. I feel like crap whenever I'm called "she" or something but "they" doesn't bother me.

    • @agdslps
      @agdslps 9 лет назад +41

      Flying FryingPan but I feel like if it really makes them feel bad then they should speak up. Nowadays they're way too many genders even some I haven't heard of I don't think it's fair for me to play mind reader. It's the same as sexuality to me, when people ask if I like girls or guys I say "I don't care" they ask if I'm bi and you know what I say "no, I am pansexual"and then inform them what it is. People need to learn to just correct people. If the person keeps misgendering you then that's rude. But if you first meet a person it just a misunderstanding and should not be taken personal.

    No, I believe you're either a he or a she. I'm not using your made up pronouns. Who are you to try and tell me what words I can or can't use. Especially when this literally applies to an extremely small percentage of people.

    • @Monica4018
      @Monica4018 7 лет назад +16

      "who are you to tell me what words i cant and cant use" ??? You're saying the person whose IDENTITY is being discussed doesn't have the authority to decide what THEIR OWN pronouns are? But YOU get to decide that people aren't allowed to be different just so they fit into YOUR standards and so you don't have to change the words you use. Who are YOU to tell people what their identity is? Honestly everything about your comment is so ignorant.

      I think everyone should call you Slagathor also fyi you do this all the time if you call people by name. Names are words which other people tell you to address them by. • @Monica4018
      @Monica4018 7 лет назад +10

      You obviously don't know that intersex people exist. And it's not a tiny percentage of the population. People are LITERALLY and GENETICALLY not entirely male or female. So you're wrong, it's not biologically 2 genders with no exceptions. Even biologically, people are somewhere in between the spectrum. That being said, anyone should be able to decide what their pronouns are because guess what? It's regarding who they are, not you. If someone who is born intersex, meaning genetically not completely male or female, what are you going to call them?Thats right, you call them whatever they want to be called because it's their identity. Plus, a large percentage of transgender people are passing as their gender so easily that you would never know they're trans unless they said so. You probably have already called people by their preferred pronouns without even knowing they're trans :) Just because you purposely want to call someone by a pronoun they don't identify with, doesn't mean you haven't already in your life seen or interacted with a trans person even momentarily and didn't know they were trans, AND called them by the correct gender :)

    • @Monica4018
      @Monica4018 7 лет назад +7

      You're basing everything on your own knowledge on genetics which is still incorrect. Yes there are only 2 chromosomes but there are actual people with a wide variation and combination of those 2 chromosomes which were genetically not born entirely male or female. Look it up.

      +Rose Lewis Same. Even though I have XY chromosomes, I get misgendered a lot in public because I look sort of androgynous with long hair. Doesn't bother me at all. Call me a she. Sure. Call me a he. Fine. My mom actually corrects the people all the time if I'm eating lunch or something with her. If I was alone I wouldn't even have bothered. I actually like being androgynous and get validation when people misgender me because it means that I can pull off either being a male or female. It's kind of fun actually. Some days I like looking beautiful. Sometimes I like looking handsome. Like you I feel like a mix of everything despite my chromosomes being male. It's quite awesome if I do say so myself :)

    *Simple psychology:*
    Sex- defined by the genitalia and the chromosomes.
    Gender- defined by what the individual identifies with.
    Sex is biologically set in stone by chromosomes but is physically (and legally) subject to change by sex reassignment surgery.
    Gender is whatever the hell the person feels deep down in their heart.
    *Not-so-simple psychology:*
    Gender is not black and white. It can be grey, too.
    Some males like to dress as women, but that's it. Some males like to dress as women and like to go by "she," but leave it at that. Some males like to dress as women, like to go by "she", and are taking hormones to look more feminine, but leave it at that. Some males like to dress as women, like to go by "she," are taking hormones, and are going through the process of getting the surgery. Some males have gone through the surgery and just ARE women.
    Some females like to dress as men, but that's it. Some females like to dress as men and like to go by "he," but leave it at that. Some females like to dress as men, like to go by "he," and are taking hormones to look more masculine, but leave it at that. Some females like to dress as men, like to go by "he," are taking hormones, and are going through the process of getting the surgery. Some females have gone through the surgery and just ARE men.
    Some males and females dress as men on some days and women on other days, but that's it. Some males and females dress as men sometimes and women other times and prefer the corresponding pronoun or NO pronoun at all. This is called Gender Fluidity.
    And what's even more seemingly complex about it all is that none of this has to do with whom they are attracted to. All of the above gender identity scenarios can be attracted to men, women, anything in between, all of the above, or nothing at all. It all depends on the individual.
    *Moral of the story to take home is:* Never assume... but if you're forced to assume (because of work), be open-minded about it. If you're not sure, then just ask politely.
    *Advice for the ambiguously gender'd folk:* Don't be offended when someone accidentally gets it wrong. They genuinely didn't know. Just let them know kindly who you are and leave it at that.
    *P.S.* Saying "preferred" pronouns subconsciously gives people the impression that they have an option in which pronoun to use. If you want people to be consistent and less confused, do not use the word "preferred". Remain assertive and simply say, "I actually go by __, and I would feel better if you used that instead."

"The brain has a sex too" as a *figure of speech* refers to what gender is. So to correct me with exactly what I said in the first place makes no sense.

      If I could help. There's some transgendered youtubers who could help you understand. Although Gigi gorgeous is transgendered youtuber, I don't think she really discusses it as much as she could. My favorite, is princessjoules, as she's documented her entire journey, and has made multiple videos not only one the physical changes of a man to woman, but the emotional ones. Like being in public and having someone try to guess or figure you out, and even discussing her relationship with specific family members. What emotional struggles she faces with the surgeries. Pretty much she's shown the reality of being transgendered, I think to help them have a voice, and help younger people who are in a place she once was, see how she did it, so they can do it themselves.
      I'm born a girl, happily one too, and I'm straight. But I still love watching her and other people like her because it opens my eyes to the type of people there are, and their struggles. Sometimes I feel like the LGBT community is such a strong one because they all know what rejection and what being "different" feels like.

      Top comment. I consider myself far left and an ally to all downtrodden people, but damned if I don't get policed all the time by the prissy language cops.
      I just lost 481 twitter followers after using the phrase: "it retards progress". They subtweeted and called "ableist white trash". Ironically, some used actual ableist terms to insult me ("moron", "autistic", etc.).
      Without understanding context, language is meaningless. Some of the best potential allies to disenfranchised people are being pushed away and scorned because they didn't use the perfect correct accepted words of the moment. It's depressingly stupid, what the world is becoming, from all sides.

    • @FungusMossGnosis
      @FungusMossGnosis 5 лет назад +1

      @American Fuel TV Yes, I saw what you did: you ignored context to make a biased point. Same thing the language cops do. I gave one extreme example that wasn't indicative of the whole, and I didn't specify what politics the mob of outraged bullies had (most were centrist normies).
      In reality (not Twitter), that PC-fascistic behavior originated with conservative reactionaries, particularly the religious and militaristic. Then it morphed into general liberal culture, and was seized and manipulated by the Neoliberal media to manipulate the masses. This isn't a leftist conspiracy. Leftists have no control over it. But radical liberals are some of the most annoying perpetrators of the phenomenon.

    I really hate the "if I want to be an inanimate object I can" argument against transgenders. Surprise, if you want to be a pony, you can never become a pony, mentally or physically. If you want to become the opposite gender you can. You are still a human being. You didn't change what you are, you changed who, as in a person, you are. Comparing genders to animals and objects is highly disrespectful, close-minded, and shows you really don't get it. These are people who know their truth, so trying to say they are wrong is ridiculous.

      _"If you want to become the opposite gender you can."_
      No, actually, you can't. In no way can a male human ever become a female human. The body will never have the FUNCTION of the female body, no matter how expensive the surgery. Appearance without function is a superficial change. And individuals who undergo such gender reassignment surgery have suicide rates 20 times higher than those who never have the surgery. Chromosomal identity will ALWAYS be male.
      The IDENTITY disconnect is never resolved by the surgery. It is simply exacerbated. These people will never be accepted as wholly female or wholly male. A transgender reassigned female to male will still have the lower bone density, weaker hips, and less developed musculature. Worst of all, they will have a laughably small and only partially functional sexual organ and still can't generate semen. Chromosomal identity will ALWAYS be female.
      They will not be FUNCTIONALLY the opposite gender. You're pretending that this isn't a psychological issue isn't tolerance. It's enabling. In one case, you would never allow a delusional schizophrenic who believes that he can fly to jump off of a building, but here you are not just allowing but encouraging people who are under the misbegotten belief that their body and gender are two separate concepts to climb up onto a sexuality rooftop just the same. Hell, you are handing them a ladder.
      It isn't the same. It will never be the same. This universe does not work that way.

If someone misgendered them, they simply corrected them, and that was that. They only got upset if the other person refused to use their proper pronoun. I only met one person like the one you described, but she was always harping about SJW things, to the point that even the trans*/non-binary people who knew her didn't want to be around her. There are always people like that in the world.

  • @joshuawirht3832
    @joshuawirht3832 9 лет назад +21

    Firstly I am very respectful so if someone tells me they like to be referred to as he or she or mam or sir then I will do it. Secondly the only time someone should be offended or angry, is when the person referring to you knows how you like to be referred and still doesn't refer to you that way. Gender specific pronouns are only a big deal to people that identify with a gender that they where not born with, which is a very small % of people and the rest of us don't know or don't think about unless its brought up. If we refer to you with the wrong gender pronoun it doesn't mean we are insensitive, hateful, disrespectful or oppressive it just means we don't know. The whole point of this video was to get us talking about this and to be more sensitive to the needs of the transgender and to possibly come up with collectively, a fitting pronoun for transgender men and woman. Then I read some of the comments and this one sums it up the best "Would it kill you to be sensitive to someone's needs? Piece of shit... " It seems that we need to focus more on the SENSITIVITY and RESPECT then on who its for. Just my two cent.

    • @renehenriquez345

      Very eloquently said. I think most people, if they saw the issues that plague our society from a perspective other than their own, may see the world differently and change their ignorant, insensitive comments. I also find it ironic that the people you'd expect to be the most loving and sensitive, i.e. very religious Christians, are sometimes the most offensive and unloving people when an issue pertains to the LGBT community. As long as there are hypocrites using their religion as a reason for their hate, there will always be inequality. Something as simple as asking to be referred to as a "he" or a "she" should not be taken as an effort to make someone subservient and "bow down" to them when all they ask is that they are treated with respect which is what everyone is entitled to. I can only hope that people will change their perspective and allow themselves to through someone else's eyes. Also, I hope that I didn't come off as someone against religion. I just wanted to state that there are many people who follow a religion and use their religion as the basis of their hate but often forget that their religion also preaches acceptance and love.

      @anaveragespork8486 9 лет назад +1

      Pup uwu Look, I get being called what you want to be called, and I'm fine with that. But if it's somebody you don't know and they think you look a certain way that 99.99% of time would be associated with one gender, but you don't choose to identify as that gender, don't get offended. Just respectfully correct me, and I will treat you with the same respect and call you what you want to be called. You shouldn't be offended if it's somebody you don't know because they don't know you so they don't know what you want to be referred as. It's a lot easier for a trans person to just respectfully correct a person that doesn't know them than for an entire society to have to think about what this person wants to be identified as before a conversation. It just doesn't feel natural and would be awkward to have to stop and think about that every time you talk to a new person. But if you let me know that you want to be called something else, I'll respect who you are and call you by that.

      I dislike "gender fluid". Out of all the forms of sexuality, this is the one that screams mental disorder.
      Being born a male in a females body makes 100% sense, but being born a female then sometimes you're a male sometimes a female, it sounds like split personality, and while I feel sympathy for people who are transgender, I feel no real sympathy for you, and hope you understand for the rest of your life, you will almost never get called what you want.

    • @kevinfox298
      @kevinfox298 9 лет назад +14

      loverboy6667 We're both transgender. How come my identity should be respected but theirs shouldn't?
      Human gender is a huge spectrum, and far more complex than you've been taught to believe. The human brain is complex, and each person holds to such a variety of identities at any one time - familial, professional, socio-economical, platonical, romantic, sexual and so on and so forth. Our brains are far more complex than any computer we've managed to make.
      If all this is true, why would our concept of gender simply fit between two flag poles based on something as irrelevant as your genitalia (whether they match a cultural standard or not)?
      In that case, why would gender fluidity NOT be 'possible to comprehend'?

    • @loverboy6667
      @loverboy6667 9 лет назад +13

      Like I said before it is 100% possible to comprehend as long as you understand from a physiological stand point, flipping between personalities, and letting one control you, literally makes you a split personality case. You're argument that each person hold different personalities is a complete grasp at straws. Comparing how you behave with family and how you behave at work, do not mean you have have different personalities, it means you have different persona's. I.E iI let you see what I want you to see at work compared to what i want my friends to see, same personality, different persona. To say you are a boy at the beginning of the day, then you change sometimes to girl or vice versa, Those changes will come with behavior change, you will act differently etc. Meaning a secondary personality is coming to fruition. So I do feel bad for you, because of the fact you have split personality disorder, but not for the fact that you are "transgender". You could of as easily been mentally human as well as mentally an owl. You just got lucky.

      Non binary is a subcategory of trans. Trans is when you identify as a different gender then you were assigned at birth, and nobody is born with "nonbinary" genitalia. So nonbinary IS trans. You could see that in the video. Kate was talking about how they're not "a he" and not "a she".

    • @august1451
      @august1451 8 лет назад +5

      Beck some non-binary people don't like being called trans because that has an implication of gender, and if you don't have a gender you wouldn't want that. When I feel neutral, I don't mind, but not everyone is okay with the same things, so I think that's what they meant.

      DreatsyOne non-binary means anyone who isn't always either male or female. Basically every trans person that doesn't identify as 100% male or 100% female.

    I feel like it's okay to misgender someone by accident as long as you're polite and apologize. Like saying ma'am or sir and if they correct you don't go "no, you're clearly [female/male]", you should, to be respectful and kind, say "oh, I'm so sorry."

    I used to use 'they' all the time in primary (US - grade) school when we were given sentence completing assignments, for example i'd write 'Sam went to get the ball, 'they' found it under a tree'
    I got told off all the time because it was meant to be 'he', my argument was that Sam could be a boy or girls name, seeing as I didn't know their gender, "they" made more sense.
    I got a punishment exercise for it...

    • @peeblespebbles5689
      @peeblespebbles5689 8 лет назад +2

      Kyle Farscht But singular 'they' exists? How would you talk about someone if you didn't know their gender? Would you call them "it"?
      For example, would you say 'they should just do it themselves' or 'it should just do it itself'/ "He or she should do it him or herself"?
      English needs gender neutral pronouns, using 'they' is the most obvious choice.
      Other people seem to think it's okay.

    it's important to use the correct pronouns for transgender/agender/genderfluid because you would use the pronouns She/her for a cis female? so why wouldn't you for a trans female, just because that person is trans doesn't make them any less than a she, so it would be wrong to use he because _she_ is not a he
    Also for the they/them pronouns, it's just disrepectful not to use their pronouns, it isn't that hard, if they do not Identify as a girl or a boy and the want you to use the pronouns they/them do it, it is not difficult, it's really simple

    • @zels3883
      @zels3883 8 лет назад +1

      +aj Yes, thank you! My argument on this subject is that if you called a cis male she, you would be corrected and everyone would be upset. The guy would probably tell you over and over again to use he/him. Why can't anti-trans people see this?

    When my step-father transitioned getting the right pronouns was *by far* the hardest part for me. When I met him he was a she and presented as a woman. A year or so later he came out as a transman. For the next couple of years I tried, but changing the pronouns for a person you know is *hard,* so I mostly just avoided them whenever I could. It made for some awkward sentence structure, let me tell you! As he began presenting as more masculine when the testosterone kicked in it got easier. Now, 20 years later, I would never refer to him as anything but he or him. Nobody can look at him now and have any idea he was born a girl.

    As a trans person, this title annoys the hell out of me. There are no such things as "transgender pronouns", they are simply pronouns. Saying transgender pronouns implies an inherent difference between how pronouns are used when they are used with a transgender vs. cisgender person, which there is not. Rephrase it to "Why we should respect pronouns" or something like that, that would get the message across all the same and be a lot more respectful and less othering.
