      I watched AJ race for many years, as a photographer on the circuit covering many races and a fan. GREAT driver, smart, so what he had a temper, no different then many people. He could muscle a car and put it where it needed to be. Nothing was handed to him, he worked his butt off for everything he got/has! AJ Foyt did as much for Indycar Racing as Indycar Racing did for him. I have much respect for him. A great father and friend to many. Thank you A.J.

      @@billcolton1674 every great driver has a temper, anyway. So it's a bit rich for motorsports fans to criticise him for that. It's literally this competitiveness and drive that makes them great drivers to begin with. They are angry if they aren't winning every race. And nobody wins every race. So they're all angry, all the time lol

    Now THERE'S a race car driver. There may be younger racing fans who are tempted to compare recent prominent drivers to him, but believe you me - they aren't fit to gap A.J.'s plugs. This guy drove everything, and won in whatever venue, whatever type of car there was to drive. He built his own cars and did so much of his own work. A real throwback to real racing times before any showbusiness stuff. Most other drivers pale in comparison; he could make ANY 'intimidator' cower. I once was in the pits at the Miller 200 at the Milwaukee Mile in the 70's and witnessed up close and personally his intensity as he worked on his car, pre-race. A true legend.

      In 1988(? or 89) Foyt spread a story about how he had a special car made for him for the Indy 500. That sent the media buzzing, because it was true, Foyt did have a specially made car for him. He didn't tell anyone what was so special about the car.
      It was just a few inches wider so he could fit in it. Gotta hand it to him for how he sold it.

    I knew AJ back in the 60's when he was racing at DuQuoin State Fairgrounds race track in IL. I think he won there 6 times. All the drivers stayed at a motel in MT. Vernon, IL because there were no big motels near DuQuoin. Once at the motel AJ told me he was hungry and had me go buy him chicken at Kentucky Fried Chicken and bring it back to him. Back then racing was very dangerous. The drivers pulled their cars behind a pickup truck. If they wanted a car to drive they would rent it. If there was a party going on somewhere you could always get some of them to show up. Once at a party they were spinning the wheels of a rental car and someone called the police. They asked us who was spinning the wheels of a car. We told them AJ Foyt and Parnelli Jones. They did not believe us and said "get out of here". I am telling on them now!
    AJ is the only driver ever to win the Indy 500, 24 hour of Lemans, and Daytona 500! He could drive anything that had wheels on it. A lot like Kyle Larson can now!

    The Gospel According to FOYT

  • @adri9428
    @adri9428 6 лет назад +9

    For those that are wondering about the somber tone in Paul Page's voice, some background:
    AJ Foyt retired from full time racing after winning his seventh title in the last representative USAC Championship, a 1979 season very depleted of talent because of CART's creation. He kept on doing some CART races in a part-time basis (37 in the following 8 years), and in 1988, aged 53, he decided to race full time again. In the third year since his comeback, he was doing a fine job, just outside the top 10 in points with some solid finishes (seven top 10's and a fifth place at Meadowlands), when he smashed his feet at Road America.
    When he came back at the Indy 500 in 1991, he still wanted to race full time, and drove the following 5 races. Unfortunately, the pain on his feet was too much for him at the twistys, and he decided to stop doing 'em after Meadowlands, and to only do the remaining two ovals, Michigan and Nazareth, retiring in both. By the time Nazareth came, there was much rumbling about him retiring at the end of the season, without even getting a farewell end at Indy despite what he reportedly said, and that's why the TV crew was so focused on the good ol' A.J. after he got out of the car.
    Eventually, he did race at the Indy 500 in 1992, finishing ninth, apart from a very strange, one lap long start-and-park at Surfers Paradise for Walker Motorsport and some laps in practice at Phoenix. The rest is history: Foyt tried to do the 1993 Indy 500, his driver Robby Gordon crashed on practice during pole day, and he called it quits to concentrate on ownership.

      Adrián Fernández then Tony George tried creating a USAC 2.0 in 1996 called the IRL. That was a total flop and look at what happed to INDYCAR for 10 to 20 years later it was dead.

    • @adri9428
      @adri9428 6 лет назад +4

      Yeah, but I don't know why you brought that up, as it has nothing to do with my comment or the video. Anyway, IndyCar has been on a slow upswing for a few years, that has intensified as of late. Not there yet on TV ratings and oval attendance outside Indy, but the quality of the field and the look and raceability of the cars are second to none, including those gold years. Heck, we're having a Bump Day again, and the full time field it set to keep increasing in the coming years.

    • @IndyCARTforever

      I think he was trying to avoid Jeff Andretti and put himself in the wall. It was during a green flag run, I think, so the broadcast didn't catch it exactly, otherwise I would have included it.

    marshalljimduncan John Andretti wasn't THAT bad. He won an Indycar race at Surfers Paradise and won two nascar cup series races.

      Jeff Andretti is Michael Andretti's brother and John Andretti's cousin. Jeff Andretti had one full season in CART (1991), won Rookie of the Year, but ... not near Michael's talent. Jeff Andretti never seemed to recover from a big crash in the 1992 Indy 500, and his career petered out in NASCAR trucks.

      Mears ran wide anyway and then Lewis wrecked into Hall. He admitted that he threw it away after the race.

    Does anybody have footage of Johnny Benson, Jr.'s rant during a CWTS race that referenced this (and is also responsible for half of the UL views)? Last time I checked, it wasn't on here at all, and I don't even think the race from which it came from is on here! Can anybody please send me a clip of that for me to DL? I have never seen that clip, *EVER.* Please let me know. Thank you.

      Randy Dubin You mean Johnny Sauter? Yeah, when that happened, I was working on a paper for class and my notifications on MSN exploded and it left me VERY confused for about 15 minutes.
