    You analyzed JJ’s vowel manipulation exactly right. It’s actually very difficult for many mandarin speakers since the language is inherently flat in vowels. Some of the best mandarin singers came from English as first language, JJ being one of them. I didn’t know he came from Seth’s speech level method but makes perfect sense.

    • @kori228

    • @danielx40
      @danielx40 4 года назад +21

      kori228 so, this singer JJ studied under a guy named Seth, who invented a method called speech-level singing. One of the technique is to make “Need” sound slightly like “Nerd”, or “Neeuud” in high registries. “ee” sounds makes a person’s mouth open too wide -it somehow causes a strain on the vocal cord. Opera singers and classic singers open their mouths more vertically, with jaws lowered. Regular people tend to squeeze out high notes. Usually sounds like “nay” and “nu” are easier to sing high without strain, while “ni” is more difficult. So when professionals sing “ni”, they make it sound a bit like “neeuu”. In Chinese the sound “ni” (neee) is more distinct than in English, so it is more difficult to change the vowel while saying the right words.

    You should react to JJ Lin's 《领悟》which is also sung on the same show. This song is more on his vocal prowess but 《领悟》is one that pushes both his emotional and vocal skills to the maximum. Singers don't really have both skills to such an astonishing degree but JJ sure has it

    • @Rayodon
      @Rayodon 4 года назад +19

      In《凤凰于飞》JJ pushes his vocal range closer to his limits, could be a good song to react to since there is a lot more falsetto and also a lower range (possibly baritone/bass).
      Also in 《我们的爱》he goes for a more rock-based style and there's a lot more glissandos.

    Thanks for your expert and professional reaction. It was great! It’s a pity that you couldn’t understand what he was singing about, otherwise, you would understand why there are high tunes, auto tunes and low tunes in his singing to effect the emotions and his interpretation of the song.
    You’re right that this song is not his own. This song was selected during this variety show where he was selected by a contestant to re-interpret, re-arrange and re-package the whole within 3 hours, including the rehearsal. This show recorded live performances. I don’t think there was any post-prod recording of the song, but I may be wrong.

    “What good would it be for me to win the whole world but lose you instead”
    -would be my literal (and lengthy...kudos to the grammar of Chinese haha) translation of the song’s title.
    “How did you lose the world” kind of has it backwards... (it’s very natural English that has just happens to have not much to do with the title of this particular song...)
    Every time I see the title of this song it reminds me of this verse from the Bible: “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
    (the Chinese translation matches the song title more closely in terms of sentence structure)
    Incidentally, JJ is a devout Christian and I think (but am not sure) that Terry Lin (Lin ZhiXuan) who probably wrote this song is too.
    Btw: JJ Lin is from Singapore and based in Taiwan. And very popular across the Chinese-speaking world :D

    No..This is a live recording😅 Auto tuning must have been done post production by it's variety show production team. JJ is a mega star in Chinese pop in Asia. He too is a multi-talented artist not just a mega-singer plays multiple musical instruments also a music producer (produces most of his own albums & songs/albums of others singers)..music composers to his own songs & also composed music pieces for other artists too!! He too sometimes took some parts in acting in movies as well. He's labelled by fans all over the world for being a "walking CD" as his live performances sounded no different from his very own CD albums😘👍Follows him on his Instagram @jjlin for more of him on/off camera!!😜✌️

      中国节目很多成品都会后制修音,即时你听现场,过后发布的成品也经过修音,稍微让音有对到pitch,这是很正常,人声没可能每个音都跟乐器那么准。

    Wait till you listen to the original version by (Terry Lin) from his ex-duo band called Ukelele back in 1994. Not that the original version is bad or what but if you learn the fact that JJ was only given a few hours to come up with his own rendition, boy would you have a better grasp of just how talented he is. Also, I've always felt that Music knows no barriers or boundaries and Matt Ramsey making that assumption @14:30 was the exact testimony to it because he was almost spot-on! Here's the original MTV from Ukelele for anyone who's curious & the other earlier rendition from A-Lin (That lady in white with the short hair within the panel) respectively!
