Out of all the "walking CDs" in the Chinese/Mandarn music world, JJ Lin is hands down the most stable and consistent of them all. I guess that means...he's not just a walking CD, and not just a running CD, but a freaking FLYING CD.
He is one of the "Judge/Contestant in the show where they get challenge every week and the challenger will pick a song for the judge they challenge out of a few selection the show prepared. The Judge then have a few hours to changed up the song to perform their own version of it. That particular song JJ perform is an old song from around the early 90s and he revitalised it completely!
I actually went through these "reactions to JJ Lin" videos trying to find some explanations to his singing technique xD I really love his voice and respect how much he tried to improve himself even after he became famous.
If you want to hear something really unique and powerful, I highly recommend JJ Lin's live stage of the song called 凤凰于飞 (loosely translate to Flying Phoenix). This is the theme song of a Chinese historical drama. JJ Lin personally re-arranged and modernised the song, adding a lot of elements from other music genres. When I watched that performance, it left me SPEECHLESS. I felt like my mind was transported straight back to ancient China.
JJ is the best. He has amazing voice. He doesn’t only have the nickname of walking CD but also some Asian celebrities had said that his voice is kissed by Angel. I’m so glad he’s getting better and better throughout the years since he had his voice back. Thank you Justin.
I like how you mention how JJ seems to thin out his voice when he sings low, then opens up when the pitch rises. That "thinning" of his voice is his usual singing style which makes his voice quite unique. However in his earliest singing videos, before he became an artist, its obvious that his singing style was more "open".
He does not use autotune. You can refer to all of his live performances in the past. They are so good, which explains his godlike status of "walking CD"
