As someone who grew up in Singapore, I've listened to Stefanie since I was about 6 years old. Her voice is absolutely inimitable and her songs are devastating in how simply they speak to the heart. Happy you discovered her ❤
The lyrics, the melody and the singing, really describes the breakdown of a relationship, the heartbreak process and denial, the letting go and the sadness of each memory... It feels like I experienced a heartbreak again

She's always been my favourite singer since her first album was released in 2001. I still cry when I listen o her songs after so many years...absolutely one of the best singers with so many good songs...
You are all of us Joe❤ would love your take on her Ten Hei Hei(cloudy day). One of my favorite. Song is so emotional, relatable and inspirational. A gem. Keep up the great work!
Songs from the past always has these kind of deep lyrics that u can really feel from both the singer n the words itself and all those songs has meaning behind it, I'm glad i was born in that era
imagine when we are listening to the song during the 90s. when we are 18 years old, when the real life strike. imagine how much we cry to the song and get through everything as a newbie in relationship.
我怀念的 is a song thats been around for 16 years and each time I hear it, it still tugs at my heartstrings. Like other commenters said it just feels different when she sang it years ago vs this version.
Stefanie was a buck to the prevailing trend in mandopop during the time of her debut. Most female singers in mandopop were dolling themselves up, promoting themselves through various controversies, singing cutesy tunes, or huge belty ballads. Then you have this unassuming young lady from Singapore, making her career in a foreign land (Taiwan), singing straight from her heart. She may not have the biggest voice, nor the prettiest face, but what you get from her is unadulterated authenticity, and the ability to tell a story. Oh and her tone, it's so distinct and it really lends to the emotionality of the way she vocally interprets songs. The taglines of the promotion of her debut album were: '没有一个22岁的女孩像他一样唱歌’ and ‘不是超美丽,而是超实力’, loosely translating to 'there ain't another 22-year-old girl who sings like her' and 'she's not the prettiest, but she's gonna be one of the best singers you'd hear'.
She was an absolute phenom during those times. She was easily selling millions of records, and mind you, she was producing 1 album every 6 months for the first 3 years of her career. I think she burnt out as a reason, and chose to take a break from her career to recuperate and focus on her family. She won the highly coveted and prestigious Best New Artist at the Taiwanese Golden Melody Awards, beating out Jay Chou. One can only imagine, if she hadn't taken a break, what level of success she would have sustained.
this is specifically why I seem to always tend to want to listen to these early 20th century songs. they actually put huge effort into the lyrics, the technique, meaning behind making a song. I am not saying there are no good modern artists out there, but there seems to be a trend nowadays where songs are created to just be catchy without any actual meaing behind it. It is catchy, it gets you hooked on, it just keeps running in your head rent free but it just doesnt feel like these old songs.
@@donotplayme1 I mean it’s not like I don’t understand why they would do so. Catchy music from popular artists will always sell. Trying to wait for the artist to create a masterpiece with emotion on a consistent basis is not as stable and cash grabbing as just sticking to the book for a easier and more stable way on gaining money.
The good news is that Mandopop has generally resisted this trend you describe for decades now (as is also true in Japan, which has traditionally inspired these thoughtful music). The bad news is that catchy meaningless songs are catching on in, of all places, Mainland China. And as the mainland becomes more influential culturally, they will inevitably cause a change in the entire mandopop scene and make us sound more and more like K-pop (which heavily borrows from Western/South American music).
Hi from Malaysia 🇲🇾, she is one of my idols and I love every single song she sang...I got every single of her album since I was 12yrs old. Her unique vocal and the lyrics so meaningful
There’s a famous and beautiful duet from Stephanie Sun and a Japanese singer Mai Kuraki “Tonight I feel close to you”. The harmony are beautifully sung by them. They also worked on another song together: My story, your song.
Thanks for sharing! I listened to her songs many times while I was younger but haven't really paid attention to the lyrics. Putting a spotlight onto the lyrics and feeling them with the heart do make me want to cry some good tears.
Finally! Someone who reviews Stefanie! She is someone who truly has one of the most unique vocals that's almost immediately recognizable. Also a huge star and stepped back from the limelight to possibly focus more on herself and her personal life. But people will not forget superb singers even after years. I'd love for you to review more of her songs. 我不难过 is like the precursor to 我怀念的. Another song with a more kick ass vibe for me is 逃亡. Her song Kepler has also been covered by many singers. And there's also 遇见, a soundtrack for a famous movie!
I watched the movie "六弄咖啡館" on a plane, and when the credits rolled, 半句再見 played. I could tell it was Stefanie immediately from her voice alone even when it was the first time I heard it. Not many artists have that ability. Such a special national treasure she is, along with JJ!
The pride of Singapore... I was fortunate enough to be on duty as a crowd control officer at one of her very first shows when she started out. She was singing at a 'side stage' for a National Day concert. I remember this skinny lass walking on stage looking NOTHING like a celebrity or singer, nobody knew her... I think she was still in university or had just graduated at that time. But when she opened her mouth and sing.... OMG!!! PS:- the percussionist/drummer is Mohamed Noor, a living local sessionist legend. Very honoured to have known him and worked in the same club he played in some 20 years ago. Currently he is working on a project with a Live-loop guitarist/musician here.
The second song I listened when I was little, and I really start understanding after I got hurts, and after heart breaking and how mature this is. First song is after I broke up with my ex who with me 6 and half years and then I understand this song so much with all the breaking heart and all the situations. And can sing this song with all the feelings now…
Even having listening to this song 20+ years ago in my teenage years I never actually go into full understanding of the lyrics itself, now in my mid 30s, these lyrics and song and emotions did make me 哭了

I still keep her Cassettes which I bought between 1999 to 2005.
The second song I listened when I was little, and I really start understanding after I got hurts, and after heart breaking and how mature this is.
First song is after I broke up with my ex who with me 6 and half years and then I understand this song so much with all the breaking heart and all the situations.
And can sing this song with all the feelings now…
You're listening to one of the best mandarin female vocalist in Asia...Her voice can pierces through your heart...
u can't be serious...
Malaysia audience here . I am very(xN) appreciate you find good song for us , thank you very much !
Love her so much!! ❤ As a fellow Singaporean, so proud of her!!! Thank you RUclips for recommending this video to me 🥰
Even having listening to this song 20+ years ago in my teenage years I never actually go into full understanding of the lyrics itself, now in my mid 30s, these lyrics and song and emotions did make me 哭了
It really takes time, huh.... For you, for me, for everybody......
