He is the best pop music master in Chinese speaking community, without a doubt. Every time I listen to his songs, I am filled with emotion. This song "Hill" is one of my favorites. Every time I listen to it, it brings me to tears.
I returned from Jonathan's concert last week. This song came at the end, pushing the atmosphere to its peak. Many people had tears in their eyes. Jonathan is a great man and all of his hit songs are truly remarkable.
I listened to his songs, with my parents, when i was younger. Never truly got the meaning of them. It was only until after i turn 30, then i could start relate my life experience to his songs. His lyrics are poetic and yet at the same time a combination of regrets and self-reflection, expressed in a very mature way - like all middle age men. It does not hit you until you have gone through enough and perhaps lost enough in your life. This is just a classic and it will always be, regardless of how many years have gone by. For life is a repeating cycle and all men shall still encounter similar feelings and experiences regardless of the essence of time.

If you can understand Chinese, you'll know that English translations fall far short of the profound essence of Chinese song lyrics. I also hope that this Chinese-to-English passage can help you understand the feelings in our hearts. Thank you for enjoying Li Zongsheng's songs; he is a symbol of our youth, brimming with the talents, emotions, love, and various aspects of life of 20th-century Chinese people. Thank you for allowing me to once again listen to his new works. Very grateful. In addition, his guitar is personally handcrafted and limited edition.
He is already 65 years old, I have been to his concert earlier this year. His live performance is simply full of emotion and touching. Personally I would recommend 希望(Hope, 1993), 遠行(Journey, 1993), both live from the sense and sensibility concert, (Song for Myself, 2010, especially the live version in his own concert instead of studio version from Superband. However Superband is also worth of listen to, it is a supergroup of 4 and give tour for a year only) and 新寫的舊歌(Newly Written Old Song, 2018, probably you cannot find the english lyrics of this one but I have checked google translate is mostly accurate) The first two songs are from the period that he is having sort of mid-life and marriage crisis that the music industry in Taiwan was transforming from production-lead to market-lead. And he is also kind of having affair with his second wife (Sandy Lam) while he has two girls with his first wife and having lots of pressure from the media and the industry. So he left the stage after 1993 and focus more on producer role. The third song first appears in the last of the 52 concerts of Superband. It is about his life experience after he have moved from Taiwan to Shanghai and Beijing because of work. If you check the Even If Youth Is Never Lasting World Tour recording, it has the video showing how he composes the song in the office at a random night in the ending. The last one is about his own struggle with his passed away dad in his life. I cried so hard during the concert when he sang this one.
I haven’t listened to this song for many years. I just happened to listen to it on a whim yesterday, and then RUclips recommended your video to me! Subscribed and shared!! 2023-9-24
Thank you for this video. I actually listened to this song a long time ago, but back then, I was quite young. At that time, I couldn't truly appreciate how deeply the lyrics touched me. But this time around, I must admit, I found myself in tears. The line 'get over the hill, only to find no one's waiting' is incredibly poignant. However, I'm grateful that now, I have someone waiting for me on the other side of that hill. I should cherish it more than I did before. So, I have to say, every time I watch your videos, they offer me some valuable insights. I also appreciate your explanations, as they help me understand why the music is so moving and how much passion and thought the composers and instrumentalists have poured into this song, making it sound truly remarkable🙂
Hey Joe, thank you for reviewing this song. I am watching this video during the lunch time at my company cafeteria. I am sorry for holding my tears coming out of my eyes, coz there are too many people here.
He is one of the, if not THE best Chinese song writer there was and is. His lyrics are not just words but poems and life and poems of lives of everyone who listens.

Thank you Joe for your professional explanation of the song! I've known this song for a few years, and it's undoubtedly one of the special ones I've heard.
I went to Jonathon's Concert a few days ago in Auckland New Zealand. It was an amazing experience. I grew up with his songs, not only the songs he sings but also numerous songs he's written for other really famous Chinese singers. What surprised me so much was, that you could find so many young faces at the concert. They started listening to his songs in his later career and what Jonathon evaluates himself is, the songs he created after his 50 years old were way better than before. This proves good music is for everyone, no matter their age.
In fact, the entire song is a portrayal of our lives. When I was young, I always looked up to the great seniors who were as tall as mountains. I tried my best to climb up, but I still couldn't achieve the same achievements as those seniors. It felt like I was just climbing a hill without touching my seniors at all. But looking back at this time, I found that the people who were with me were no longer there, and I found that I was old. Have I lost myself? Have I forgotten my original intention? At least, leave something behind. I can leave it to future generations to taste. At least, I have more courage to face my imminent end with a smile.

Jay Chou might be the current meme artist, but Jonathan Lee is definitely the forever one! I'd like to recommend you to check out artists and their songs from Taiwan first, as most popular songs you've been listening to are mostly from Taiwan.
Just take a moment to relax and enjoy the music, for real. He didn't even mention if the singer is from China or not in the entire video. It's called respect, dude.💀💀💀💀
No doubt that Jonathan Lee is the GOAT of mandarin pop music. Please do a review on 給自己的歌(Song for myself), definitely listen to the first release version that he sung in a concert and struck all the audience in awe.
I think the quality of your REACTION is very high, so I just went to your weibo to search for this video, but I couldn't find it, why hasn't your weibo been updated for a long time? I'm one of the earliest fans of yours, and I'd like to say that you've received this award because of your professionalism! You're really the most musically skilled of the bloggers who do Chinese culture videos, your interpretation of music is great, and so is your playing of instruments! Li Zongsheng's lyrics have a lot of depth, and the English translation in this video is quite good, although I feel that it still doesn't reach the effect expressed in Chinese, but the fact that you can understand it and fully comprehend it is really because of your deep musical skills! Will continue to support you! Looking forward to your updates!
Normally I'd say some meanings are lost in translation, but you can tell just how good of a lyricist Jonathan Lee is, that even translated into English, you can really appreciate that poetic depiction in that verse you talk about. He's really respected singer songwriter, his lyrics especially. So many classic songs by other singers that are so meaningful has been written by him. Im not a musician but seeing how you react to him, I'm guessing he is also a really good musician, in terms of understanding that structure of music, instruments etc, which some singers probably aren't that well verse in, even the singer song writer ones. He's probably the most sought after lyricist, because you wouldn't believe just how many songs that are so successful but most importantly also meaningful, are written by him. Also it's interesting you mention about his guitar, the use of acoustic, and especially that the tuning isn't a common one or something. He really loves guitar and even builds his own guitar too. Im not sure if he manufactures them, but I remember watching an interview where he talks about it. I think he has a shop selling guitars or other instruments too, so he does sell his guitars but probably not mass production.
I love Lin's translation that "Karma never blessed on me". “时不我与的哀愁” could be directly translated as "feel sad as the time never wait me", an regret on missing chances. But Lin's translation elevates the lyrics to another level. Jonathan Lee had affairs within his two marriages, and his second wife divorced him before this song. That's probably why he sighs nobody waiting at the other side of the hill and he misses embraces in the lyrics. It's karma, isn't it?
The beauty of Chinese lyrics is really hard to translate in the same realm of English. This thing can only rely on joe to learn Chinese well, after all, joe is really love the D-tone guitar music:)
Hey Joe (You get the pun😅), Been a while since I commented on your vid. I loved Jonathan Lee's songs since I first heard them as a teen. He was such a unique voice back in a very pop heavy industry. I've always viewed him as a Chinese version of Dylan or Cohen due to the way he sings and the ridiculously good lyrics he conjures out of nowhere. Really glad you found his stuff... I'm sure you would LOVE his catalogue of music.
He and Lo Da-You should be two of the greatest music masters for C-Pop. They wrote tons of great songs, and more importantly, most of them all became top hits. Please take a chance to listen to two divas: Sarah Chen 陳淑樺 and Teresa Teng 鄧麗君. Sarah Chen is the one whom Jonathan Lee admired so much, and the latter passed away many years ago but is considered the greatest Taiwanese singer.
Somehow I read his lyrics kind of differently. Instead of him actively feeling the ambition of going over another hill, I sensed more of the melancholy of him feels like losing part of himself and his love ones in the process of chasing different monuments in life. A grief of giving it all but still missing so much when he looks back.
Joe ,Jonathan Lee is a master in the Taiwan music industry. The band MAYDAY can get the achievement nowadays because Jonathan Lee gave opportunities to them. Their demo impressed Rock Records executive Jonathan Lee (李宗盛) who described them as "the ones who would usher in the sound of the future" And the guitar in the video which played by Jonathan Lee,that is made by his guitar brand ‘Lee Guitars’.
He definitely the one that you can listen all, I have been to his concert in Chengdu 8 years ago and just been to his concert in Syndey, worthed for every penny, no doubt, I will go for his next world tour. Love him so much.
The hills in the lyrics can actually be interpreted as the peaks in life, when young, desperately trying to climb the peak of their career, but neglecting friendship, love and affection, when finally reached a peak, but found that they lost them
As a foreign friend who is not a native Chinese speaker, I have to say, brother, you really understand Li Zongsheng’s exclamation in this song, and your in-depth analysis and understanding of music may be better than most Chinese. fans.

Masterpiece.
No doubt that Jonathan Lee is the GOAT of mandarin pop music. Please do a review on 給自己的歌(Song for myself), definitely listen to the first release version that he sung in a concert and struck all the audience in awe.

The way he sings evokes such powerful imagery. I cried after the first 4 lines.
He enjoyed the melody, we tasted the lyrics which is the soul of this song......
He is a legend, he "owned" (in a metaphorical sense) half of the Chinese music industry back then.
J LEE has his own guitar manufacturing factory in Beijing, and he can hand-make guitars himself. do you know? J LEE
Hey Joe! Thanks to you I'm even more fond of this song now.
There are a lot of great Taiwanese musicians that you should explore and he is one of them.
I am amazed by your translator again, he's so good! I had to go back several times to feel how he translated the lyrics.
Joe ,Jonathan Lee is a master in the Taiwan music industry. The band MAYDAY can get the achievement nowadays because Jonathan Lee gave opportunities to them.
Their demo impressed Rock Records executive Jonathan Lee (李宗盛) who described them as "the ones who would usher in the sound of the future"
And the guitar in the video which played by Jonathan Lee,that is made by his guitar brand ‘Lee Guitars’.
Yes, he is the most important master of Chinese, and leads lots of singers even an era.
He is a very famous Taiwanese singer and he writes number famous songs for movies as well❤
In the album, the brass was violin. That s another feeling, u can feel more 'hill' from the melody
He definitely the one that you can listen all, I have been to his concert in Chengdu 8 years ago and just been to his concert in Syndey, worthed for every penny, no doubt, I will go for his next world tour. Love him so much.
The hills in the lyrics can actually be interpreted as the peaks in life, when young, desperately trying to climb the peak of their career, but neglecting friendship, love and affection, when finally reached a peak, but found that they lost them
U are right, the emotion comes out even before the music....
As a foreign friend who is not a native Chinese speaker, I have to say, brother, you really understand Li Zongsheng’s exclamation in this song, and your in-depth analysis and understanding of music may be better than most Chinese. fans.
