To be honest, this is the first time I've listened to a song by Jonathan Lee, but I was completely moved by it, and I was in tears while listening. In Chinese culture, the relationship between father and son is often quite serious, and they typically do not express their feelings to each other directly. Fathers are often strict, and sons usually only share good news while keeping any difficulties to themselves, hoping to achieve something significant to gain their father's approval. However, it is often only when one becomes a father oneself that one truly understands the challenges of the role. Many times, before they have the chance to express their feelings to their father or receive their father's explicit approval, their father has already passed away. This song is truly wonderful!

Attended Jonathan Lee's concert at Taipei back in 2021. It was a memorable moment for me when he sang this song.
At one point he lightly choked up during the song and proceeded to quickly wiping off his tears during the short instrumental after the line「
All the memories of his father must've came back to him when he sang this song that night, especially when he was performing in his own hometown on the first day of this concert; making it even more personal and emotional...

I feel that I can 100% resonate with his lyrics. I feel that discussing his lyrics writing or singing method is not enough to explain the resonance of this song to the hearts of Chinese people. I am not saying that non-Chinese speakers cannot resonate, but if you Growing up in a Chinese family, the resonance you will feel after listening to this song will be beyond words. In Chinese culture, the father-son relationship is an extremely complex topic, but it is rarely mentioned, because it is neither as direct as maternal love, nor unlike some fathers in Western society who have been completely missing since the childhood. It has always existed, but it is not only the father's Love, as well as the same strictness and care as a master has for his apprentice, always feel that there is a sense of distance, respect and awe exist at the same time. When I became a father and had a child, I found that I became more and more like my father . I was always very strict with my son, but I was stingy in expressing my love for my son, even if my son did very well. I just smiled and said, well done. After listening to this song, I hope to give my father and son a big hug and tell them that I love them and that I hope that from now on I can be the best son and father in their hearts.

Thank for sharing this one. I have to say your translator did an excellent job on lyrics translation of this song. As an native Chinese language speaker, I found reading the translated English lyrics deepened the understanding of the meaning of the song. Your comments are so spot on too, I get to appreciate it from different layers like song writing and music arrangement perspectives.
The fact that you are feeling what this song about just shows the power of music is beyond language, culture, and any barrier.
Again thanks for picking Johnathon's piece. He is an legend in Chinese pop music realm.

This song is such a love letter to Jonathan's late father, seeking to reconcile their relationship. In Chinese / Taiwanese culture, expressing feelings to our parents is often so challenging, and parents also struggle to show their love to their children. The focus is usually on wanting the kids to be successful rather than building an emotional connection. Sadly, we often recognize the importance of this connection only after when it is too late. I deeply resonate with this regret and guilt. We were never taught the languages of love, such as words of affirmation, physical touch, and quality time. I am grateful that Jonathan has been able to transcribe this profound emotional journey into a song we can all relate to and bury ourselves in uncontrollable tears.
Joe, watching your videos has been such an incredible experience. Your analysis of the music, the instruments, the composition, and the layering, along with your insights into the style and personal appreciation for the music, have been immensely helpful. Hi Joe, just want to say that I am really impressed by how insightful your interpretation of this song is. Your level of connection to this song is beyond languages and cultures. How your emotions resonate with the emotional ups and downs that Jonathon constructed in this piece is amazing. That, to me, shows that you are a sensitive, empathetic and open minded person.
My father passed away on the first day of 2020. You can imagine how complicated my feelings towards this song can be. In a typical 70's Chinese family, the father and son relationships can be painfully close. As much as you would love your father, you want to run away at the same time. Unlike Jonathan, I stayed by my father's side till his last breath. When I heard "Yet still remember his clouded eyes. With a serious face that I dare not to look into, he struggled so hard to move forward" I just burst into tears because I had the exact moment with my father in his later days. I really appreciate this song because it provides me an outlet for all the emotions that I have from the passing of my father. I also resonate with your summaries in this video. Right on!
Thanks for the good work. Can't wait for more!

    還是由衷希望大家不會遇到歌詞裡這種類型的父親
    尤其希望各位男人們,千萬不要成為這樣子的父親
    實在太多遺憾太多誤解太多傷害了

    • @haohao-kb8ze
      @haohao-kb8ze 6 дней назад +1

      @@xfwong7082 99%言之太過吧,現實和網路上也不乏看到能夠給予“充足且健康”的父愛例子,而孩子長大成人依然能夠和父親和諧有愛的相處。
      無能又無力?這不就是作為父親該深深檢討的地方嗎?既然選擇要生兒育女,就不該無能無力,做不到就代表沒準備好,那就不該生,管好自己的老二,確實避孕才對。
      更何況,若大部分情況下男人無能無力,難道女人就活該要背負一切嗎?這個社會套在女人身上的枷鎖和責任可不比男人少,為何女人就依然能夠給予母愛,男人就只能無能無力?這邏輯也未免雙標了?
      在孩子的成長過程中,父愛和母愛是具備不同功能的,缺乏其中一種都會導致孩子人格建立的不健全,而至少在華人文化中,父愛很多是不足夠的,這現象很常見很習慣,但請不要把常見跟習慣當成理所當然,就好像違法的事情再常見也是違法,並不會因此變成對的。
      我本人就是一個缺乏父愛的人,父親對我來說只代表三件事:肢體暴力、言語暴力和冷暴力。你能體會當你什麼事都沒做,就時常莫名遭到極為惡毒仇視的眼神瞪視的感受嗎?這可不是什麼父親的無能無力,更不是什麼只能默默的在背後可以解釋的。是,父親工作賺錢給予家庭物質的保障,但難道母親就沒有嗎?若父親只做得到物質上的供給,那麻煩養寵物就好,不要養人,人需要的東西比寵物複雜太多了。
      父親參與不了兒子理想和人生,我相信一定有無奈做不到的,但更多的,其實是不想不願不懂。

This is one of the most difficult song I have ever learned. In fact you can find my comment under that video as "I hate you so much for how I wish I were able to love you". The lyrics "The two men, most likely will spend their whole life just looking like each other", made me unconsciously weep, unable to proceed all the time, waking the vulnerable little boy up from the deepest bottom of my heart. I had to deliver the song a lot different from his original version when I sang it to my coach. Yet again, Jonathan Lee may not be much into up-to-date art, instead, he is always involved in the eternal topics of humanity

The lump in my throat is so painful!
There are two other songs that come to mind about the father and son relationship..
Mike and the Mechanics /Paul Carrick : In The Living Years
    And
    Jarki Mono : Wet Shave
The first is about missed opportunities after the loss of a Father. The second about an absent father. Both hugely emotional.
But Jonathan Lee has achieved a piece of perfection with this song and performance, to rival any other! What an incredible song! 😍

We talk like friends but, we were separated by the Pacific Ocean and seeing each other too little ever since I was 25. Over the last 30 years, I could only see him once a year or even less. We talked on the phone though. But when he pass away so quickly, it left a huge hole in me and I blame myself for not spending enough time with him.... Mr. Creator, I think you has a old soul since you can appreciate and resonate at Jonathan’ songs at such a young age.
It might be a pain sometime if you had a old soul.
    Wish you won’t.

Yes. Jonathan Lee's songs are very wise, from themes of personal relationships to social issues. The Godfather of Songs indeed. Can also explore another prolific songwriter (Taiwanese) of similar stature, Luo Da You.

In China, our emotions are all restrained, so the emotions between parents and children are always complicated, especially between father and son. This complexity is the soil for this perfect song. Thank you for sharing.I recommend you listen to Late Marriage.

Li's later music style reminds me of Bob Dylan. There is no ups and downs of the melody, but more of mumbling to himself.

It hit your heart when the lyric and music have been spoken and played emotionally with a pause or gentle or ocean wavely drown you the regret black sea. You knew you could do nothing with it after everything has been left behind and you are the one should face the thing you cannot do anything about at present. Damn, it is a song with reflecting the relationship with dad and everyone has something similar to it. I missed my dad while he passed away last October.
