But he does not make the GOAT shortlist. To do that you have to become more than a player - you have to transcend football to become a national a hero and change the sport itself. You have to have created legendary moments that got burned into people's memories, and which will be remembered for generations. Ronaldo always lacked that thing you can't describe - the touch of genius that set Messi, Pelé and Maradona apart. He was a goal scoring machine, but not much else. What truly set him apart was that he was the most marketable player ever. But he's no hero - he's a brand that was distributed en masse. He's not even close to Messi. He never was.
I would put R9 in the same class, talent wise, as Maradona, Pele & Messi. Injuries, at a very young age, derailed what could’ve been potentially the greatest career ever. Remember, Ronaldo at 22 had already won the Ballon D’or & FIFA World Player twice.

My cousin who has played his whole life said it was too good to be true and would never happen but it did. I wish I was more shocked but I'm so happy for Messi. Definitely made me a new fan.

There was never a debate imo Messi can still turn defenders inside out with skill and pace. Ronaldo started to lose that at 32 and had to change the way he played.

I'm no big fan of Cristiano. But, tbf, Messi also adapted his way to play when he turned 30. He has to decide if he turns alien. I have seen so many games of him, especially from 2007-2015 that it's not fair to claim he hasn't had to adapt his style. He had to. The point here is, that - despite being 35 - he is still the best player in the world. That is something no one had ever achieved, this kind of continuity for at least 15 years. I can't recall exactly if it was in 2004 or 2005 when Dinho was voted player of year by fifa. He said in an interview after the ceremony ( and I quote): "This award here says I'm the best player in the world, but I'm not even the best player at Barcelona." Before the WC it was debatable, Messi was 21 - 25 (peaked), CR7 was better 28 - 32 ( peaked) & of course Messi is good now at 35, but after the world cup the debate is over. Messi the goat.

Ronaldo did come close to being counted among them, simply by virtue of his outrageous goal scoring ability. But his international career fell short. He is one of the greatest players ever for sure, with an illustrious club career, full of individual awards. But now that his career is ending, to me he finished at the level of other legends like Cruyff, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazairo, and Beckenbauer. He probably tops that list. But he does not make the GOAT shortlist. To do that you have to become more than a player - you have to transcend football to become a national a hero and change the sport itself. You have to have created legendary moments that got burned into people's memories, and which will be remembered for generations.
Ronaldo always lacked that thing you can't describe - the touch of genius that set Messi, Pelé and Maradona apart. He was a goal scoring machine, but not much else. What truly set him apart was that he was the most marketable player ever. But he's no hero - he's a brand that was distributed en masse.
He's not even close to Messi. He never was.
I would put R9 in the same class, talent wise, as Maradona, Pele & Messi.

I'm no big fan of Cristiano. But, tbf, Messi also adapted his way to play when he turned 30. He has to decide if he turns alien. Back in the days, he was alien as soon as the first whistle was blown until the game ended. I have seen so many games of him, especially from 2007-2015 that it's not fair to claim he hasn't had to adapt his style. He had to.
The point here is, that - despite being 35 - he is still the best player in the world. That is something no one had ever achieved, this kind of continuity for at least 15 years.
I can't recall exactly if it was in 2004 or 2005 when Dinho was voted player of year by fifa. He said in an interview after the ceremony ( and I quote): "This award here says I'm the best player in the world, but I'm not even the best player at Barcelona." He was referring to Messi, of course. I think it was in 2005, but don't nail me on that ^^

Agreed, there was never a question. The only people making it a debate are people that love drama and fabricating over the top rivarlies. Ronaldo is a good goal scorer, thats it.
