Out of the 11 major international tournaments (5 WC and 6 Copa América) in which he has participated in, he reached the finals 6 times (2 WC and 4 Copa). That is a final reaching success rate of 55%, which means he more often than not reaches the final with argentina. Think about that for a moment. His international career is still underrated.
He has won every individual and collective trophy there is to win, 1200+ goals and assists, 7 Ballon d'Ors, 6 golden boots, 4 best playmaker awards, numerous records, successfully competing with the best players since he was 18 and now him being 35 he is competing with the best players of the upcoming generation. The consistency is unmatched - even CR7 could not keep up such tempo for that long. Additionally, you can say that passes, goals, dribbles, chance creating, vision, technique, set-pieces, leadership, etc - it is all there. He is the goat in my book.

I'm shocked that no one speaks about Messi's character. His poise and fairplay. The fact that he is so humble and the perfect role model for young kids watching. That needs to be factored in. There is no comparison to the GOAT debate when it comes to what he has contributed to the game.
I have ALWAYS said this, especially around that time when Argentina was in total shambles and people were comparing him to Maradona, saying he doesn't have enough fight in him. Messi doesn't believe in winning "at all cost". If the price is cheating the game, it seems he would rather just do his best within the rules and lose. He has always worked hard. Sometimes we saw the pressure get the best of him but he has always put in work, both for club and country. I think because of his astronomical numbers for Barcelona we forget that he is human and needs a TEAM that will work with him (like ANY OTHER PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME). For too long, Argentina expected him to do it all and that just doesn't work in football. Finally he got a supporting group that were determined to bleed for him and for the honor of Argentina. I don't think any other player has come under as much pressure in the history of the game, and no other player has ever played as consistently at this level for as long as he has, shattering all kinds of records. Messi made all of this look easy, while staying humble, never claiming to be the best and playing almost completely clean. Football is really going to miss him and we are privileged to have witnessed this legacy because there will probably not be another like him for a LONG TIME! I personally think Lionel Messi is the Greatest Player ever to touch football. His success has been breathtaking. Pele didn't played in Europe, Maradona never won Copa. But Messi has everything. Trophies more than combined of both. Goals more than Both. I mean I understand emotional part of old people attachment but Messi is generational. The result, trophy, game, goals, assist says it all
Pele didn't play in Europe because they were not the dominant leagues at the time, nor could they bring in foreign players like they are able to now. Messi is generational, like you said. So was Pele in his time. The game has changed too much for them to be compared to begin with.
Okay lets take a leveled playing field…international official matches: Pelé 0.83 goals per game, Messi: 0.57 goals per game…Pelé 3 world cups, Messi 1 world cup. Messi is to me the second greatest player nothing wrong with that 😂
The consistency of the WAY he plays makes him the best ever! There is simply no one who can do what Messi does. His dribbling , vision, passing, goal scoring,… he’s just the most complete player ever. The guy was compared to Maradona at the age of 19. He was dribbling in a magical way past to 3,4,5,6 players and scoring goals that nobody could do at the biggest stage against the biggest clubs. And we don’t talk about passing 1 or 2 players. He was the nightmare for all defenders. Teams setting up tactics against Messi. ‘How to stop Messi’ was the million dollar question for all teams in the past 17 years. Whenever he had the ball, glued to his feet, you knew that something magical was about to happen. He’s the best at creating creative attacks, he’s the best at setting up others to score, he’s the best at scoring( the guy is deadly in front of the goal), he’s the best at passing (He sees passes that nobody else sees them), he’s the God of dribbling, he has a wonderful shot and very accurate,…. What do you need more? He’s all in one. . That is the kind of player he was and is. So he absolutely didn’t need to win the WC to be the best ever. The WC is just a result of his greatness. And whoever doesn’t see it is either blind or doesn’t know anything about football. Or the person had just another preference for no reason and ignores all that. There are people who prefer Renault Megane above a mercedes s-class or Rolls Royce Phantom… and there are some who find it really prettier 😅. So not everyone’s opinion is pertinent.

I really don't understand why we ever consider that in this era Messi plays against all nations that levels of quality is way better than Maradona and certainly Pele eras. All these nations even Morocco have footballers who play in the highest leagues in this era. The level of the game is way more difficult for Messi. There's more to Maradona's leadership than Argentina. Maradona Won the World Cup and then went to Napoli, a club that had literally been fighting relegation the year prior. At a time when no Non-Northern Italian side had ever won the Scudetto. The team around Maradona wasn't even great, because they didn't spend money the way that the Northern Italian powers did. Ronaldinho is not even top 5 when it comes to talent. Dribbling players through skill-full moves doesn’t make you the most talented player. Talent is when you can influence the game in different ways. Unless, you can find a player who can score close to 91 Goals in a year & also have the ability to be the best playmaker in the World, no one is close to Messi talent-wise.
Ronaldinho was unreal. But Messi is by far the most talented player ever seen. Even if you you go off stats, it still doesn’t make up for how good he is
His abilities to go n look for that ball n then bring it all the way n make beautiful goals is unique. No one else. His humbling attitude come on guys hes the best!!!
For me its not just the accomplishment i also see the physical aspect. His size and what he can do to the field its so amazing how good he is cause in the end of the days size does matter most of the times.
Messi if you noticed when is playing he is scanning the pitch, he is not even looking at the ball when he is got it and produces magic Well, to have that kind of skill it thrills you, it is such joy to watch what he is doing on the pitch Now obviously Maradona and Pele they went through a different era of football but the fact is the individual skills which Messi in my opinion cannot be compared ,ticking all the boxes it does makes him the greatest player of all time
We will look back at this argentina squad and realise how amazing messi was. There are 3 or 4 players in that squad that were stand out - Di Maria, Messi, mcallister and alvarez. You can argue emi martinez too. But two of those guys are mid 30s and led the team. Messi and di maria dragged that team through as icons to inspire the team. We will look back and compare this tournament to Argentina 86. Messi was key in bringing a decent team to world level. It was unreal.
Many Brazilians would argue that Garrincha was a more talented footballer than Pele. He only really had one good tournament in 58, didn’t play at all in 62, and then was not the best Brazilian player in 70. Obviously a great but I think his greatness has been exaggerated with time
To be honest who cares what shaka thinks.... what's his own achievement....is he a word Cup winner (NO)... is he champion league winner (NO)... is he an elite goalkeeper (NO).... MESSI was is and will remain the best ever ...they can only dream to have a career like MESSI

The greatest final ever, the greatest attitude, Leadership from Messi as far as his leadership is concerned. Thanks to France for turning the final into a heart stopping final. Mbappe probably deserved to win the world cup but not more than Messi. Messi deserved to win in such a dramatic fashion. The world cup is honoured to crown Messi as its champion. It must be world cup's pride that Messi has won it at last. A fairy tale . He is among the greatests if not the greatest. Case closed.
Messi is the greatest because he tries to be the best on and off the pitch. Something Pele and Maradona couldn't do. And as we all know that affected Maradonas career at the end.
I don't know what else anyone needs to prove himself..since 2012 we have been hearing he is the one of the greatest and another 10 years of miracle what else
To be fair Pele played against mostly players who had jobs on the side. Football today is SO difficult and all the players are at (more or less) peak health and fitness and protected from harmful elements such as drugs. Messi set his records in that time. It was even harder.
In my opinion, I would go back to the changes that have been put in place now. Before football was not as it is now. So many rules have been put in place. If things like offside, goal line, technology, VAR, etc were used in the old days, am sure few would have reached the level they did. Messi is playing in a more tough and very competitive period and for him to reach were he is today is unbelievable. No disrespect for Pele and Maradona but to me Messi as the G.O.A.T. No doubt about it. Numbers in collection of individual brilliance awards, trophies, goals, assists, record breaking, you name it. He has it all. Surely to even argue about this. Common...
It was never about what he won with Barcelona or Argentina, it's about how he plays, you have to love and enjoy the unique way he plays while you can because we won't see a player like this anymore, just like Maradona.
Messi is GOAT not because of the stats...he hás done só many things that you cant put on numbers. He is not the GOAT because of what he has done, but because of how he did... And how he was able to change and Shape his game when he realized he was getting older...moving into a playmaker (while keeping scoring and assisting) is Just amazing.
Respect to Shaka. Man of his word and the right answer. Messi has ticked all the boxes for the longest period of time. Undisputed GOAT.

To those people who said that it's hard to compare different players in different periods, you have no right to select any other players as the GOAT.

I agree.
I agree with you.
Okay lets take a leveled playing field…international official matches: Pelé 0.83 goals per game, Messi: 0.57 goals per game…Pelé 3 world cups, Messi 1 world cup. Messi is to me the second greatest player nothing wrong with that 😂
Messi won everything there is to win in every competition there is. There's no debate. Pele and cocainadona are overrated.

Don’t tell the die hard Pele fans that though LMAO
@@xrpedro Yeah I am just not subscribing to that. Yes he was the difference in the first world cup, and to a lesser degree in his 3rd world cup. But his involvement for the second World Cup was trivial, and Brazil would of won it regardless if he was there or not.
his goal record is also very questionable. he played most of his life in the MLS at a time where anyone half decent could score a hundred goals a year.
Mane Garrincha really is the unsung hero of Brazil. He was the best player in the 58 final and carried Brazil in the 62 World Cup after Pele got injured. Yet i barely see him mentioned anywhere, i sometimes even doubt if teenagers even know who he was 🤷♂
@@ollie-pn1ql I do think in 1958 Pele was undoubtedly the best player for Brazil, if not a great contributed to them winning it, and for him to do it when he was 17 and scoring 6 goals at that was crazy. But we can't knock Pele for that because he was the best player of the best national team ever. Now you see why a player's actual ability, physicality, and game sense is important3) he's never played in a physical and demanding league. La Liga was made for his playstyle. 4) he's always done well with the greatest midfielders of all time. Disregarding this wc, he has never done well on the international stage. This is because he doesn't have iniesta, busqets, and xavi making his goals. 5) even his years at barca and the rewards he got are coming under question due to corruption and evidence over evidence of paying referees. How can you praise what he's done and the awards he's gotten in rigged seasons? All in all, he's a great player but not the goat. Cristiano Ronaldo has played all over Europe, including the physically demanding premier league. He is better on his weak foot and in the air. Had matched dribbling ability until a knee injury. “Maradona was a better leader”. I don’t know about that. Considering how he cares about his Argentinian teammates and how they respect him as a leader. I think maybe players like Messi, Modric and Benzema (last year in the CL) are redefining what we think of as “leaders”, where it’s less about them and their larger than life egos and more about the team.
Maradona led them to two Scudettos in six years and no non-Northern Italian side has won the Scudetto since.

That being said, I’d argue Ronaldinho is the most talented player ever and I’m really not going to budge on that until I see someone do what he did
Maradona just as good in terms of talent. That's in terms of their ball control and manipulation abilities
Not in football
Messi if you noticed when is playing he is scanning the pitch, he is not even looking at the ball when he is got it and produces magic
Well, to have that kind of skill it thrills you, it is such joy to watch what he is doing on the pitch
Now obviously Maradona and Pele they went through a different era of football but the fact is the individual skills which Messi in my opinion cannot be compared ,ticking all the boxes it does makes him the greatest player of all time
We will look back at this argentina squad and realise how amazing messi was.

In my opinion, I would go back to the changes that have been put in place now. Before football was not as it is now. So many rules have been put in place. If things like offside, goal line, technology, VAR, etc were used in the old days, am sure few would have reached the level they did.
