It's not a debate. Messi scores more goals per minute. Way more assists per minute. Needs fewer attempts to score. Better conversion rate from essentially everywhere. And he doesn't just score, but creates chances. Best dribbler, best passer (most assists in history).
And this is only speaking about the scoring abilities, which is most of the times the only subject to speak about when comparing Messi and Cristiano. And I honestly think people mainly speak about goals because CR can not to much more than that while Messi can run a game and is not only one of the best goal scorers of all time but also one of the best playmakers ever. Stats don’t tell the whole story. Plays that start or set up player movements that eventually end in a goal could never be tracked. This is what makes Messi special in my mind. Not only do the stats say he is the goat, but the numerous goals scored because of his playmaking ability that doesn’t show up on stats sheets.

Simple reason: Ronaldo played in the hardest, best league in the world for his first four years at RW. Therefore, he didn’t score many goals then, but for Madrid (importantly) he has scored more goals than played games. Tells u something else

At the beginning of their careers they played in similar styles as they were both wingers, playmakers, passers and goal scorers. But Messi was at such a highly level at each of these, when Ronaldo came to Madrid he needed to change his playstyle to compete with Messi. So Ronaldo sacrificed the things that didnt bring stats like playmaking, passing and dribbling. And he became one of the best finishers/goalscorers. But Messi played the same for 15 years. He scored the same amount of goals as Ronaldo, became the player with the most asists and became one of the best playmaker and dribblers of all time.

However Ronaldo came to Man United at 17, in the hardest and most physical and competitive league in the world, yet it was just amazing that in his 6 years with them, he won so much through his hard work, dedication and so on… he should really be praised for that, whereas Messi came into a team that was just the best in the world, playing the best football. It's not a debate.
Messi scores more goals per minute. Way more assists per minute. Needs fewer attempts to score. Better conversion rate from essentially everywhere.
And he doesn't just score, but creates chances. Best dribbler, best passer (most assists in history).
And this is only speaking about the scoring abilities, which is most of the times the only subject to speak about when comparing Messi and Cristiano. And I honestly think people mainly speak about goals because CR can not to much more than that while Messi can run a game and is not only one of the best goal scorers of all time but also one of the best playmakers ever. It is insane and ridiculous to compare a great goal scorer with a player that is as good as him scoring goals and also can do everything else at the best of the levels.
For me there is no doubt. Messi is by a huge distance the best player I have seen.
Ronaldo has the most assists in UCL history, and the 4th most in history, he may be a striker now but don’t forget he was a midfielder and a winger.

This WC for example, his dribble from the halfway line all the way to the goalie, setting up Julian Alvarez for an easy goal just counts as "1 assist" for Messi, like any normal assist. Same for his "impossible pass" vs Netherlands. So to have a player that scores as much as Ronaldo but is also arguably the best passer and dribbler in one player puts him in a category of his own to me. That said, I think Cristiano Ronaldo is also in a category of his own above everyone else besides Messi. Maradona didn't maintain his WC form outside the WC for long and his stats pale in comparison to these two.

But Messi's playmaking capability is sometimes severely overlooked which Carragher pointed out rightfully. And off the bench goal stats speak for themselves for Messi, which was the crux of the argument used by Neville anyway.

Stats don’t tell the whole story. Plays that start or set up player movements that eventually end in a goal could never be tracked. This is what makes Messi special in my mind. But Messi was at such a highly level at each of these, when Ronaldo came to Madrid he needed to change his playstyle to compete with Messi. So Ronaldo sacrificed the things that didnt bring stats like playmaking, passing and dribbling. And he became one of the best finishers/goalscorers. But Messi played the same for 15 years. The point where the debate comes in is between the goals, where each one has arguments to be classified as the best goalscorer, and in the UCL, (where Ronaldo is better than Messi in this aspect).
In literally every other aspect of football, Messi wins. The thing is that, in the football aspects where Ronaldo wins, Messi is close or even in same level compared to Ronaldo, while in the football aspects where Messi wins, Messi has a significant advantage in each one, where Ronaldo is not close to Messi in those things.

I’m a Man Utd fan but I’ve always ranked messi higher. I still remember when he destroyed us in both UCL finals he was simply unstoppable no matter what you do. It’s not always about the stats it’s about what they actually do with a football. I prefer to just say they are equal because I prefer Ronaldo but messi is simply better

That's not the argument at all. The argument is Ronaldo provides more options to score chasing a game given his stat's in scoring different types of goals. Doesn't mean he would score just more options.
@Persia I'm not saying anything against Messi however I've never seen Messi jump 9ft and head home a goal or score a bicycle in a champions league semi. The point is ronaldo provides a larger goal variety is all that's been suggested.

Ronaldo is good enough and has the physique and fitness to play any position apart from goalie but why would you put him in any other position than that when he has such a natural ability to score goals? The big difference for me is that Ronaldo tears it up on any stage, with any team and any league, where as we haven't really seen how Messi performs anywhere other than La Liga and for Barca and Ronaldo also seems to score at important moments. I'm 100% with Neville on this one and I think this season will show just how much of a league of his own Ronaldo is in.
