Gary defeated his own argument by opening up those stats. If someone new to football saw those stats, they'd instantly believe that Messi is the better player. And keep in mind these are only goal stats. If they pull up assists and playmaking stats, there would be no discussion.

It's not a debate.
Messi scores more goals per minute. Way more assists per minute. Needs fewer attempts to score. Better conversion rate from essentially everywhere.
And he doesn't just score, but creates chances. Best dribbler, best passer (most assists in history).
And this is only speaking about the scoring abilities, which is most of the times the only subject to speak about when comparing Messi and Cristiano. And I honestly think people mainly speak about goals because CR can not to much more than that while Messi can run a game and is not only one of the best goal scorers of all time but also one of the best playmakers ever. It is insane and ridiculous to compare a great goal scorer with a player that is as good as him scoring goals and also can do everything else at the best of the levels.
For me there is no doubt. Messi is by a huge distance the best player I have seen.
Ronaldo has the most assists in UCL history, and the 4th most in history, he may be a striker now but don’t forget he was a midfielder and a winger.

But rather than the stats, it's more that Messi is a very good creator and not just a finisher that separates them to me.
This WC for example, his dribble from the halfway line all the way to the goalie, setting up Julian Alvarez for an easy goal just counts as "1 assist" for Messi, like any normal assist. Same for his "impossible pass" vs Netherlands. So to have a player that scores as much as Ronaldo but is also arguably the best passer and dribbler in one player puts him in a category of his own to me. That said, I think Cristiano Ronaldo is also in a category of his own above everyone else besides Messi. Maradona didn't maintain his WC form outside the WC for long and his stats pale in comparison to these two.
@@celeschan90 Ronaldo in his prime was a world class playmaker, that is when both played on the wings, thing is and the only issue I have with Messi, is that when he’s better at something than Ronaldo, it never means Ronaldo isn’t good at it, simply means messi has done it more, but you would never say Ronaldo was bad at it. Meanwhile when Ronaldo is better at something than messi, it really shows, such as messi and headers aswell as his weak foot, which you can not say messi is still good at.
Way I see it, Ronaldo is the perfect complete player, messi is the perfect incomplete player.

@@gates3492 United fan here, but I agree more with Carragher's assessment. Ronaldo is a beast, an absolute unit, a goal machine! He is more versatile in scoring a variety of goals. But Messi's playmaking capability is sometimes severely overlooked which Carragher pointed out rightfully. And off the bench goal stats speak for themselves for Messi, which was the crux of the argument used by Neville anyway.
The way I see it, is I am lucky to witness not one, but two 🐐 in the same era. Football wins!

At the beginning of their careers they played in similar styles as they were both wingers, playmakers, passers and goal scorers. But Messi was at such a highly level at each of these, when Ronaldo came to Madrid he needed to change his playstyle to compete with Messi. So Ronaldo sacrificed the things that didnt bring stats like playmaking, passing and dribbling. And he became one of the best finishers/goalscorers. But Messi played the same for 15 years. He scored the same amount of goals as Ronaldo, became the player with the most asists and became one of the best playmaker and dribblers of all time.

However Ronaldo came to Man United at 17, in the hardest and most physical and competitive league in the world, yet it was just amazing that in his 6 years with them, he won so much through his hard work, dedication and so on… he should really be praised for that, whereas Messi came into a team that was just the best in the world, playing the best football. Messi finished second in 2009,2011,2014,2018 and finished third in 2008,2019.
Ronaldo finished second in 2008. That was the only time he was nominated.
Everything that Carra said here we have seen at the WC, he was the man, he was the best player by far at the WC while Neville said he is finished. I love that all the people have seen at the biggeat stage in football history who is the best of all time. All of this prove that Carra is one of the best pundits in the world.

Messi lost copa America twice because of them, Ronaldo(Manchester United) almost lost a Champion league Finals game in 2008 because of them, Ronaldo(Real Madrid) won a Champions league Finals in 2016 because of them, Italy won the 2006 world cup because of them. It requires calm and composure in high pressure situations. Messi and Ronaldo have been both penalty takers for their teams so if one is ahead of the other, it's the other's fault, you don't miss a penalty on purpose. Maybe you do, who knows? Argentina played Estonia recently in a friendly and Messi scored 5. Took Ronaldo 3 games to score 4 against them. But it’s club football where it shows Messi’s utter involvement in matches. Goals and assists. Today, Ronaldo has played 928 club games total, 692 goals, 217 assists. That’s 909 goals and assists in 928 games. Messi. 810 games, 681 goals, 316 assists. Round those figures to Ronaldo’s 928 games it reads 780 goals compared to Ron’s 692 and 362 assists to 217. Having played the same amount, Ronaldo 909 goals and assists in 928 games, Messi a whopping 1142. That’s a difference of 233 goals and assists. If need some perspective as these figures mess with the mind, put it this way, in Lukaku starring Serie A, Ronaldo’s 3 years at Juve, 123 goals and assists. Messi’s extra goal involvement same games played is an extra 5.5 years at Juve

It honestly baffles me how it’s a debate. Anybody who watches football knows it’s Messi. Like the guy picks up the ball in the defensive half, beats 2-3 players on the press, sprays a threaded through ball 30 yards, sprints another 40, and then has a first time finish from a cut-back from outside the box kissing the post and the ball barely went 6 inches off the ground. Who does that?

Facts
Messi is the more efficient goalscorer and has much better stats coming off from the bench. In terms of international goals eventhough Ronaldo's numbers are phenomenal it's a bit more harder to score in CONMEBOL than in Europe as the average team in South America is more stronger than the average team in Europe. What Gary meant was that Ronaldo could come off from the bench and could make the most of the chances created to score as he can score in more no of ways(header, long range, inside the box, acrobatic, penalty, freekick(not that much nowadays) ) when compared to Messi. But Messi can also create a chance for him or his teammates to score out of nowhere. Anyway instead of waiting to bring them on from the bench Gary should consider starting both the G.O.A.T's of the game.
Messi is better than Ronaldo in almost 60-70% of the stats and is a much better player to watch which should make him the undisputed G.O.A.T. The reason there is a debate even is because of Ronaldo's goals in big games especially in the champions league. In the latter stages of the UCL(QF,SF and Final) CR7 has 42 goals to Messi's 20 goals. Ronaldo has won 5 UCL's to Messi's 4 and Ronaldo has been the best player in his team and the competition in each of those 5 years whereas Messi has been the best player in his team only in 3 of those 4 triumphs. CR7 has won the golden boot, best player award and the league in each of the top 3 leagues. Whereas Messi has done it only in Spain( This argument doesn't mean that I think Messi won't excel in the PL or Serie A it's just to say that Ronaldo has a more competitive mindset to prove himself maybe that's because he might also know deep down Messi is a genius) . All in all both deserve to be among the G.O.A.T's of the game!
I don't think so. Both have them have spurred each other on. If only 1 of them existed I'm not sure they would have been motivated to carry on for this long. Both have benefitted massively from this rivalry & we as fans are lucky to see this because I'm not sure we'll ever see something like this in our lives ever again. I would say that Messi is the most talented, beautiful & skillful player to have ever graced football but Ronaldo is the most clutch player in history, in a big match I would want Ronaldo in my team above everybody else because his record in those big games is insane.

I remember back when he was in madrid, in one of the seasons, he averaged 18 fucking shots per game, so obviously his expected goal ratio is higher because he "puts" himself in a condition to score much. Who is most likely to affect the game in more ways over 90minutes and that would be Messi because he can contribute to the actual build up of attacks and general tempo of a game and is just as deadly a goalscorer as Ronaldo. And if that doesn't work then bring Ronaldo on because generally in the last minutes of games teams tend to cross balls into the box more and Ronaldo heading will be more useful.
