Zidane was a choker that yr. Real didnt get La Liga and choke early in CL. Jamie created the greatest football game of all-time and beat the GOAT Milan team to take the entire CL. He deserves it. Its not like hes ahead of Zidane anyway, hes just listed.
@@faizankhalid3842 I’m not talking about that era. It’s 2000s. He was the best player in PL and he knew it. He got humbled by Messi when he was at Barcelona coz he met the best.
@faizankhalid3842 id say he has a tinge of that but not a lot. The only thing he said that id deem hateful even though i see his perspective due to his era. Is calling R9 the Real Ronaldo, as if CR7 isnt. Especially when Cristiano achieved all that and more than R9 was projected to achieve, but did not due to injuries etc
@@101notfound17 he isn't important enough. If they wanted, they would have given him the 2020. It's insane how bandwagoners actually think he belongs there when for the large majority he was only known for being a slightly worse Nistelrooy (which he is).
Nedved, Shevchenko both unbelievable players but the years they won it ahead of TT was an absolute disgrace. TT was outperforming both of them in those season's clearly the best player on the planet. It was arguable between him and Ronaldinho the year he won it too - both had similar numbers, but Ronny winning the CL just put him ahead that season.
messi and modric is the only player to win this award without being the deserving winner. modric only won it because if they gave it to CR7 that year he would have gone 1 ahead of messi. its clear and obvious and no secret
To be fair to Nedved, he was the best player in a team that won Serie A, probably the best league in the world at the time. Led Juventus to the Champions League final. Henry won the FA Cup w/ Arsenal. Both deserving of it
Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho are by far my favorite living football legends, they are the reason I fell in love with football in the first place, they are part of my childhood... Henry should have won at least one or two ballon d'or in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, he was so unique and underrated back then, he was almost unstoppable and genuinely a very good all-rounder authentic player. ☯️✌️
Does Micah know that Nedved played CM? He should have compared Nedved's stats to Patrick Vieira's stats to get a grasp of how exceptional Pavel Nedved was in 2003.
No he didn't react cause he knew how dumb the comment was. Goals are not everything. And he is not even being compared to a striker, of course Henry will have better goalscoring stats. It's common sense nobody won a ballon d or for scoring 17 goals. Nedved contributed in other ways as well, and led his team to trophies.
Then by that same logic KDB and not Haaland should be considered for the trophy this year...thats what henry was pointing out...there is no consistency and its difficult to debate opinions which may change year on year@@kunalsingh4418
As an Arsenal fan since 2000 I still think Nedved deserved that Ballon D'or in 2003 because he was the motor of that Juve team. He was THE key player of the team that won Serie A, lead the team to the CL final which he was suspended for, and even got to the semi-finals in Euro 2004 with Czech Republic where he got injured. Before social media it wasn't just goals that determined the Ballon D'or.
and also at that time Serie A was the most competitive league in the world and not to mention Henry didn’t play well in the UCL which has always been a big factor on the award
lol, Nedved didn’t deserve it. He didn’t even win UCL and didn’t make FIFA world player of the year podium. That year was Henry’s, he did with the FIFA confederations cup as best player.
A respectful way of saying "I got robbed" 😄 But also, there was nuance in his response. For a player to win it, not only do they need to achieve great results but the stars need to align as well.
How about 28 assists for a striker and 14 for an attacking midfielder? Henry- 32 goals & 28 assists Nedved- 17 goals & 14 assists Looks like Henry was double in productivity.
@@nascimentoarantes let's see if I got this right. So, a midfielder that managed to get those pretty remarkable stats as the best player of the team that in that year had reached the UCL final (where he couldn't play), being probably the best player in what was arguably the toughest league in Europe at that time (3 Serie A team in the semifinals), being a key player that led his club to win that same league should have come second to the striker of a team that didn't make it through the second group stage of the UCL that year just based on the goals scored mostly in what at that time was an inferior league? Isn't that what the golden boot is for? Who scores the most goals wins it, very simple. The Balon d'or is supposed to be awarded to the best player, which in the end is an opinion and we can argue all day that Henry deserved it more than Nedved, but arguing that a striker is a better player compared to a midfielder just based on the goals and assists scored, I'm not sure it's fair neither makes much sense in my opinion, but who am I to judge 🤷♂
@@callejonization he spelled the key word which u disregarded and that is PRODUCTIVITY! henry had nearly double the amount of nedved's assist and nedved played in a position that is ALL ABOUT PRODUCTIVITY!!! insane stats by both but henry was a clear cut above nedved who he himself said he was shocked to win the trophy that day because he thought henry would have won it and even said henry deserved it!!! thats the man who won it by the way! lets not pretend EPL wasnt as tough as serie A if not tougher bcz if i start giving names our teeth will drop come on... do i also need to mention that the quality of the teamates matter? i shouldnt but seems like i should... the greatness of that arsenal back in the day comes 90% thanks to henry, they had pretty good players but nowhere near good enough, most of mega teams back then had AT LEAST 4-5 mega players, arsenal had 2 (1. henry, begkamp was at the end of his career, ashley cole who later on left and vieira who didnt get to play much with titi) fabregas and rosicky peaked by the time henry got a massive injury (2007) so he didnt got to play with their peaked versions and then he went to barca, same case with van persie its even more impressive to achieve beyond world class stats, breaking a record in a team that doesnt provide the quality that other big teams do! (read that again) the fact that nedved didnt get to play in the final that year is not an argument that favors him at all, its an absence you cant determine how a "ghost" would do in that game so that take is invalid and therefore dismissed... no matter how we slice it in terms of productivity and while having the superior quality team nedved was FAR from providing assist at the level on henry did and the success of both teams should also include the involvement of their teams aswell and that juve was FLYING that year and yes while nedved was the driver the quality elevated his performance further, henry didnt had that priviledge and he still put some disgustingly high numbers... he broke an ultimate record that is matched by the one and only leo messi... its over
The biggest problem we have now is people just thinking about goals and assists for this award. It is about a player INFLUENCING success within their team, whichever way that is possible. Saying you think Henry should have won it in 2003 over Nedved just means you never watched Serie A or the Champions League that year where Nedved was fantastic and the best player in each of those competitions. It may have helped that there wasn't a major international competition that year which can sway voting but Nedved still deserved it.
Henry was best player in premier league and FIFA confederations cup by some distance. Champions league he wasn’t. So compare the overall body of work and individual output. No one was more deserving.
During those days serie a was considered better than premier league. And nedved scored 15 goals and 10 assists. Those are still to this day great numbers for a midfielder
@@nascimentoarantes confederations Cup literally doesn’t matter. Yes Henry was brilliant in 2003, but he failed in Europe while Nedved excelled. Meanwhile in the league Henry was the best player in the PL but lost the title and the golden boot; Nedved was arguably the best player in Serie A and won it. Just too much for Henry to overcome with better statistics and more eye catching attacking football.

incredible to think, Alvarez had 2nd highest goals for Argentina in the wc and scored 2nd most goals for MC in the season, why he isn't in the debate. he won the treble and the wc,
Because you’re being purposefully controversial - the most important and influential player is of relevance. Alvarez had a fantastic season but in order to be in the debate, you have to be the ‘guy’. I’m sure you knew all this which is why I’m confused why you decided to point it out.
…If Belgium had won the WC then De Bruyne would’ve won it… but because of his team’s woeful performance, it negates his achievement at City. Haaland was an enigma because he performed wonderfully at City but needed more “special moments” to convince people
Yes, the Ballon d'Or is a media award. The Ballon d'Or winner is decided by 100 journalists from FIFA's 100 top-ranked member nations. Each journalist makes their top five picks from the 30-man shortlist, with each ranking earning a different points value/number of votes. First: Six points Second: Four points Third: Three points Fourth: Two points Fifth: One point
@@101notfound17 No he's right. They do get a vote. And they absolutely are biased towards their teammates at club level. You can look at some previous votes, where people who played with Messi would put Messi, Suarez, Neymar #1 #2 #3 and not have ronaldo top 5 in a season he scored 50 goals for example haha. Then I'm sure the same is true of people that played w Ronaldo. It's a stupid award these days.

@@Gdgoat222look at Eto'os 2005/06 stats ( when Cannavaro won it simply for being Italys captain when they won the world cup): 34 goals and 10 assist in 47 matches troughout all competitions (including managing to get Lehmann sent off in the UEFA CL final and scoring the equalizer). That year he definitely would've deserved to win it but because he didn't play in the WC he went unnoticed. If you're not from a big nation in most cases you won't get the recognition you deserve. Look at the disrespect Kaylor Navas got despite being one of THE best goalkeepers in the world at his prime. Eto'o definitely had seasons where he deserved the Balon d'Or especially the 2005/06 one.
In 2003 Nedved dominated European football in every sense. He was the sensation of the game all round. Juventus won the double and were unlucky to lose UCL on penalties as they dominated European football. You couldn't give it to Henry for having won an FA cup and Arsenal not amounting to much that year. Henry deserved a Ballon d'Or but you couldn't give it to him over Nedved in 2003, period. PES gamers like me remember very well the demons of Niieved & Juve 2003.
Balon d'or should be for the best player that year. Henry was by far the best player on the planet that year. The only player in history other than Messi to get 20+ goals and 20+ assists in a domestic season was Thierry in 2003.
Nedved was a midfielder not a striker, yet he had a strikers tally. Team performance is important and standing out in big games when it matters. This is what football is about. Many great players didn't receive a Ballon d'Or; Maldini, Raul, Del Piero, Deco, Totti, Pirlo etc. I understand many of you are from Premier League but back in the day it wasn't where all the football furore was made. I myself hardly ever watched Premier League and I am not from any of the big football countries.
People make a lot of confusion or, more simply, don't have a good memory. Nedved is a midfielder, more precisely a left wing at that time, and you can't compare scored goals between a midfielder and a striker (as instead is Henry). And at that time (season 2002-2003) Nedved carried Juventus to the Uefa Champions League final in Manchester vs Ac Milan. But for a yellow card got in the semifinal vs Real Madrid, he couldn't play the final. Nedved was also voted as best midfielder in 2003 by Uefa and best striker was voted Van Nistelrooy (who scored 12 goals in the Champions League 2002-2003, that are 14 considering Preliminary Round games). And talking to goals, in that season of Champions League Nedved scored 5 goals (that for a midfielder is a big number).
@@GK-qc5ry No, 2002 was the World Cup not the Euro and France was last in its group stage (they did a bad world cup). France won the Euro in 2000, but we are talking about the season 2002-2003.
@@DamianAntonio4126 Nedved was a midfielder. Del Piero and Trezeguet were supposed to score the goals, yet Nedved scored more than Trezeguet while mastering the midfield. He had an amazing season and definitely deserved it.
It is not quantifiable. A player like Haaland can score 50 goals and won't inspire or make kids and adults cry at the same time. A goal like Zidane's in the CL final vs Leverkusen was it, can inspire the next generation of players. Kids will play in the sun, rain and darkness until their mums come physically drag them off the field because of such a goal. So it is an emotional award. I don't remember the moment myself but it is said Nedved had a few games like that in Juventus' CL run that year (2003). And that's how he beat Henry to the award. But debate aside, any one saying Messi doesn't deserve this year's award by playing down captaining Argentina to the world cup and crucial goals at every stage (the goal against Mexico is what calmed team, they were getting nervous, a nervousness and impatience that loses you games), to argue he doesn't deserve it is in my opinion dishonest. I saw Batistuta cry that night of the WC final, in fact sob in happiness, he was a pundit but was sobbing in happiness. Only true football fans understand what winning a world cup means.
Questioning Nedved winning using his goal and assist stats is the most basic level to go by. Nedved numbers were very good for position played and was also instrumental in Juve CL run to the final, Henry likely lost out because of Arsenal having bad CL that season. The political side and favoritism has mainly become an issue since the Messi/Ronaldo dominance. Nedved won by over 60 points, had over three times they amount of first places votes of Henry. 3 of the top 4 were from Serie A. Also can't be totally ignored that Italian football was still at the top level back then, that year CL semi final had 3 Italian teams.

So one tournament is more important than the results/consistency of a full season. Messi was the reason Argentina won that World Cup and was clutch throughout but haaland did have the better season all throughout.
Modric won for his wc performance. If balon d’or was simply for stats, messi would have 10+. Haaland doesn’t do enough in games to warrant a best player award. He has 5 touches a game.
Brother, it is how he did it. Haaland is simply a goal scorer with no individual brilliance. Talking about individual brilliance Messi could have won Balon d’or every year from 2009 to 2021. But they do consider trophies won sometimes. This time he won the World Cup by being absolutely brilliant.
It's not about just statistics but pure performance and how important you were for the team, if you removed Halaand and put Kane, Mbappe, etc in man city in the same situation they would perform the same as him, because everything he did was waiting near thr net and wait for kdb's passes. But if you remove Messi there is no player who could have delivered the things he did, Could have haaland dribbled passed gvardiol from the centre for the third argentina goal, Could have halaand gave the unexpected assist tearing apart dutch defence, It's not just about goals, Messi plays deep and still got his deserving statistics, tell me a player who fights in midfield for creating chances and still scores like a pocher. He had the highest G/A. People only look for goals but man 30+ assists is not a joke.
You can but with your eyes😮.. such Valuable awards. Even if you Ignore that you aren’t interested in it but in reality it’s the dream of every footballer in the world.
Haaland isn't just about the goals he scored and treble. It's his first season in a new club in a new league and breaking records too. If Messi indeed getting the ballon, well then in next world cup season players should just focus on the world cup and ignore any other achievement.
Unfortunately, WC tax is very huge, deservedly so as it is the biggest sporting event in the world. And like Henry said, the pressure was absolutely massive on Messi and he was unplayable in that WC. Most players that does very well in the WC usually wins it except in 2010, 2014. Also, Messi didn't have a bum season outside the WC, the man still had 40G/A outside this WC which is very good. Haaland deserves it also but unfortunately there is WC tax.
For me, Thierry Henry was and is one of the best strikers of all time - fast, technically perfect, elegant, dangerous in every situation. Football art at the highest level, but still effective. It's a bad joke that he never got the trophy.
I'm not mad that Messi won again, he had so terrific season. But as a City fan, I feel kind of sad for Haaland. He had better individual season for sure, but because Messi won the World Cup he won this trophy. And I understand this fully. Hope Haaland's time will come but I think City needs at least 2 trophies so he could win. Because it looks like he will miss the Euro2024 and I bet which ever country wins it, some player from this team has a great chance to win next years trophy. Norway has a small chance to qualify through Nations League if they get little bit lucky and countries ahead of them will qualify. If I remember right Norway would be the next country behind Iceland to get place in March to play playoff games. There is now Bosnia-H, Ukraine, Israel and my country, Finland. Finland has 100% sure playoff spot already. We lost 3 games in a row just now... we were about 70% to qualify before these 3 games, now no chance anymore. And we lost against Kazakstan also :) Basically drawing against Slovenia would have put us in perfect position.
Booo I hate when people say Messi won the World Cup so he deserves it. Like Henry said why didn’t iniesta or xavi win during the Spain dominance era? It’s all just opinion and propaganda for the mls to get hyped and make more revenue

shock. nobody really considers midfielders unless you win a worldcup. it's always goals based. always. van dijk had the highest peak a defender could have in football and he didn't get anywhere near winning it.
8 games shouldn’t be more important than a whole season though. Messi got stats in the French league which is regarded as the worst out of the top 5 and I think might have even gone down to the sixth best league based on statistics. Haaland should have won it this year and if Ronaldo was still in Europe and had Haalands stats this season then there’s a high chance he would have won it.
Why is everyone so fixated on the world cup? It should always win the best player of the whole season and that was Haaland. In 2014 Messi made it to the final in the WC and Ronaldo didn't make it out of the group stage but he won the UCL. Guess who won the ballon for, Ronaldo
Name one Messi goal that shook everyone in the WC? I only remember him scoring penalties. Mbappe was the man of the whole tournament with his impressive performance in the finals, its not even close.

His record versus nedved’s for that year is mad honestly. They look at stats more now. It’s just general football journalists giving their general impression. And they were still following Italian football more than he prem in 2003.
I understand that Henry was invincible but nedved won it , Henry's goal scoring and assists that year was unmatched yes but nedved was playing in the best league in the world at that time, led juve to UCL final that juve lost because he didn't play, a player that totti said is unplayable, won the league and coppa Italia , he was everything Juventus that year and that was it. But for someone to win the award of 2023 because of 2022 performance is what I simply don't understand. Messi is a better player than haaland yes everyone knows that but this is 2023 performance we are talking about
Thanks, Henry. I was waiting for someone to mention Xavi and Iniesta. Messi winning the trophy in 2023 because of the World Cup means that Xavi and/or Iniesta were robbed in 2010. And if you claim that Messi won it in 2010 because of his club performance and goals that season (even though he didn't win the Champions League), then Halaand has been robbed in 2023 (after winning the treble and scoring 52 goals in total). All that said, Messi is truly a generational player. 👑
No, that’s not what he said. On the contrary, he is arguing against the nonsense of “being robed”. There are 100 journalists that voted freely. You can be in line with their opinions. But to say there was robbery is stupid. Xavi said it, Messi should win it every ear because he is the one that plays the game better than anyone. As simple as that.
Xavi or Iniesta? Before you throw out your shitty comment, choose one of the two. Messi in 2010 was in his prime, it would have been stupid to choose Iniesta or Xavi over him that year, no matter how many world cups they win
obviously. They won the WC and everything, but in ther club team was a guy who completely stands above all, so it makes no sence to give the golden ball to them.
@@k.2754but the reason they're saying Haaland or KDB or Rodri shouldn't win it is cause they didn't stand out in the World Cup. Iniesta and Xavi stood out in the world cup. Why didn't they win it
I'll answer Titi's point on spanish footballers: Every year that the WC was played, the best player of the WC won the Ballon d'Or, except in the Cristiano/Messi era. MODRICK won it in 2018 and well deserved, he was the best player of Russia 2018 WC. But look at it on wikipedia, since 2009 the spanish guys: xavi, iniesta, etc. Have been there. The only reason Iniesta didn't win in 2010 was because he was injured and only played a game and a half in that WC. Otherwise Iniesta would've won imo. But really isn't fair, if you were born in the Cristiano/Messi era, you're bound to be 2nd or 3rd. You're just unlucky, that's all. If iniesta and xavi were born 10 years before or after them, they would've won at least a couple.
Why is this World Cup argument only being brought up this year...? A French didn't win it in 2018, no Germans won in it 2014, no Spaniard won it in 2010. Nobody was talking about it then but when Messi wins it when he barely showed up for his club.
Modric got that for 2018 wc run neuer got 2014 number 3 in Ballon dor for his world cup run xavi and iniesta were in top 3 for their world cup runs in 2010
I don't get the argument of having to win the big trophies to win the Ballon d'or when speaking about Henry not winning in 2003. Figo in 2000 didn't win any trophies, and Rivaldo in 1999 only won La Liga.
You're right Figo didn't win any trophies with Barcelona in 2000, but it was either Figo or Zidane that was player of the tournament at the Euros. Rivaldo was player of the tournament at 1999 Copa America.
As much as an all time season by a forward is hard to pass up for the Balon D'Or, Nedved was amazing for Juventus and took a team that lost Zidane 2 seasons prior to the UCL final (though he missed the final through suspension) and to a Serie A title (well before Juve's dominance of Serie A). He played midfielder so any stat comparison in terms of goal involvements is pointless. Henry had remarkable stats, but he only won the FA Cup. I DON'T think its fair to put so much weight on team awards. A striker hitting 20 goals and 20 assists in the league for the first time in history is deserving of an individual award, but I must confess the Balon D'Or has consistently rated success in Europe and in your domestic leagues as extremely important.
I hope in 2029 he wins the super ballon d'Or. I dont think he has enough awards yet as that one is missing! He deserves it more than anyone else from 1990, or before that for that matter
Ignorant comment and perfect example of how all you Ronaldo fans are trying to make it seem like Messi is robbing this award bc yall hate him. Really? Julian Alvarez? Hes elite for sure but he wasnt even a starter for Man City in the Prem or CL and wasnt even top three player for Argentina let alone best young player on his team!(enzo won best young player). Sure, maybe KDB, Rodri, Mbappe and Haaland all have good cases to win the award, but messi is not robbing nobody. Multiple people can be deserving of an award but unfortunately one can only win. Its not that Messi just won the world cup, he won the world cup AND had an all time campaign. He was undoubtedly the best player in the biggest tournament on earth and if you actually watched Argentina/PSG play youd see who the driving force of the attack is. Hes a creator/playmaker and a goal scorer
@@jandregarcia6434 Messi also won a domestic double in France which gives him another buffer to win it. He should win it, but I'm happy as long as it's him or Haaland. Also the best player for city was De Bruyne and the shared 2nd place from city is Haaland and Rodri. If it doesn't go to Haaland or Messi it should be KDB.
I don’t think that the world cup should rank higher than the Champions League, you’re not evaluating individual performances but rather their teams, it’s impossible for a player like Haaland in Norway to ever win the world cup. The champions league is a better way of evaluating individual players because you can change clubs, you can’t really change your country.
3:30 Henry says it perfectly here and that's I believe the problem with this award. They are right that Messi is a deserving winner, given the history of the Ballon d'Or but I think there is a disconnect between what it is and how it is viewed by fans. It is too much results oriented. It's doesn't really go to the best player but to the best player who achieved the most while what the public want is a coronation of the best player in the world period. Sometimes the two definitions coincide, sometimes they don't
The problem is its an award of opinion thats why there will always be division. Personally I think halland deserves it because city would have never won the treble without him and that's the reason why he was brought in.
Remember, Man city won the treble without Halland scoring in major finals. No doubt, Halland was great throughout the season, but he did not even qualify or play in the most important and difficult football tournament in the world--WC. If Halland had played in that competition and even got to the semis, he may have won. What Messi did in the world cup, considering the pressure on him and his age, is just remarkable. Best player award. As many legends and managers have said. If its for the best player messi should win every year as he’s levels above anyone that’s ever played the game.

Henry is pure class. What a gentleman.
Nedved was a midfielder, Henry a striker. I guess that explains a lot of the difference in the stats 😅
How about 28 assists for a striker and 14 for an attacking midfielder?
Henry- 32 goals & 28 assists
Nedved- 17 goals & 14 assists
Looks like Henry was double in productivity.
The Balon d'or is supposed to be awarded to the best player, which in the end is an opinion and we can argue all day that Henry deserved it more than Nedved, but arguing that a striker is a better player compared to a midfielder just based on the goals and assists scored, I'm not sure it's fair neither makes much sense in my opinion, but who am I to judge 🤷♂

lets not pretend EPL wasnt as tough as serie A if not tougher bcz if i start giving names our teeth will drop come on...
do i also need to mention that the quality of the teamates matter? i shouldnt but seems like i should... the greatness of that arsenal back in the day comes 90% thanks to henry, they had pretty good players but nowhere near good enough, most of mega teams back then had AT LEAST 4-5 mega players, arsenal had 2
(1. henry, begkamp was at the end of his career, ashley cole who later on left and vieira who didnt get to play much with titi) fabregas and rosicky peaked by the time henry got a massive injury (2007) so he didnt got to play with their peaked versions and then he went to barca, same case with van persie
its even more impressive to achieve beyond world class stats, breaking a record in a team that doesnt provide the quality that other big teams do! (read that again)
the fact that nedved didnt get to play in the final that year is not an argument that favors him at all, its an absence you cant determine how a "ghost" would do in that game so that take is invalid and therefore dismissed...
no matter how we slice it in terms of productivity and while having the superior quality team nedved was FAR from providing assist at the level on henry did and the success of both teams should also include the involvement of their teams aswell and that juve was FLYING that year and yes while nedved was the driver the quality elevated his performance further, henry didnt had that priviledge and he still put some disgustingly high numbers... he broke an ultimate record that is matched by the one and only leo messi... its over
Thierry Henry should have at least 2 of these. Coming from a Chelsea fan since 1995.
Thierry Henry is one person i could listen to the entire day. This guy is just amazing.
True

Paolo Maldini may say a word on that 2003 balon d'or that he should have got
Lmao Nedved wasn't even the best player in his own team.
2002 France won the euros, that would be enough for Henry with his domestic stats as well.

Henry's stats in 2003..... 32 goals and 28 assists was insane.
In a time when even scoring 30 goals was hard, he even made 28 assists ..... INSANE

Nedved was incredible. He would have single handed won the champions league final had he not been suspended. Tore madrid to shreds
Haaland isn't just about the goals he scored and treble. It's his first season in a new club in a new league and breaking records too. If Messi indeed getting the ballon, well then in next world cup season players should just focus on the world cup and ignore any other achievement.

Respect Michael Owen for winning it, he was incredible as a young talent.
Xavi and Iniesta are 2 people, and the golden ball can't be shared. That's the point
Xavi or Iniesta? Before you throw out your shitty comment, choose one of the two.
Messi in 2010 was in his prime, it would have been stupid to choose Iniesta or Xavi over him that year, no matter how many world cups they win
agreed, only 10 year later you see the value of Iniesta and Xavi, but the ballon went to the striker
obviously. They won the WC and everything, but in ther club team was a guy who completely stands above all, so it makes no sence to give the golden ball to them.

Modric got that for 2018 wc run neuer got 2014 number 3 in Ballon dor for his world cup run xavi and iniesta were in top 3 for their world cup runs in 2010

in 2006, Cannavaro won it purely because of World Cup.

Good point on the stat comparisons and the different positions.

Xavi and Iniesta dominated at international level and also club level but never got individual recognition for it. 😔
Finally someone said it. These guys haven’t got the balls to say the truth
Because in every season Messi was the best individual my if this award was individually Messi would have won 10+ balon dors
Hmmm. Why didn’t a Spanish player win when Barca and Spain dominated football?
The problem is its an award of opinion thats why there will always be division. Personally I think halland deserves it because city would have never won the treble without him and that's the reason why he was brought in.
Remember, Man city won the treble without Halland scoring in major finals. No doubt, Halland was great throughout the season, but he did not even qualify or play in the most important and difficult football tournament in the world--WC. If Halland had played in that competition and even got to the semis, he may have won. What Messi did in the world cup, considering the pressure on him and his age, is just remarkable. He did not just win the WC, he was clearly the best player in almost all the games he played. That is not a small feat
