Thank you Rob. I’ve been picking for the past 35 years and you are teaching this old dog new tricks. You are a born teacher and an awesome musician. I’ve watched many different tutorials and you’re the only one that I truly get. Bless you my friend. All good things to you and yours.
That opening lick has baffled me for years; your breakdown of it is very clear--thanks! Thanks also for your excellent practice of putting all the parts together repeatedly; you really understand how to teach.
I remember hearing this in high school, we had a really cool history teacher who came in one morning with Music From Big Pink and Alice's Restaurant. No history today Stan said and we listened to some really great music. Changed my life he did. God bless him.
I so enjoy your song choices, playing style and teaching methods that I've just increased my monthly support. Please, everyone, support these guys for their efforts! this is a great deal of teaching for little cost to us. Thanks, Rob
I thank you very enthusiastically for this GREAT lesson! When I decide I want to learn a song, I sample several of the different lesson offerings, and sometimes I go with this guy or this version - and sometimes with that. This lesson was HEAD AND SHOULDERS above the others for clarity of presentation, the great breakdown of the different sections, the helpful composition of the shots, and the great audio - not to mention the fine playing and upbeat but pro attitude of the presenter. Now I've got another great song in my quiver. Kudos!
Damn man, this is the best song lesson I've found on RUclips ever. Your playing is fantastic and inspiring. And you've broken things down perfectly for me. Really really appreciate your work here and just want to say thanks!
I want to tell you a thing I appreciate a loooot with you ! This is your gear simplicity, you play on acoustic unplugged and it's cool to me. No apparent gear, no shiny stuff. Even the background smells japanese to me 😅 Good job ! Yoann
Excellent! AND thank you for sharing the tab/lyric sheet. I cut my finger while cutting a bagel about 3 weeks ago and it's finally healed enough that I can pick up my guitar and play it again. After three weeks of not playing I'm really rusty but this is inspiring me to play!
urdebest892 Sorry to hear about your injury, that's always such a drag. Glad you're all healed up and ready to get back to your practice. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. -Rob
stan hankins Hey thanks for watching, glad you're enjoying this lesson. Keep at it...the hand is a machine, it just takes time to program. Robbie was a sloppy picker, so no need to make it super polished. Have fun. -Rob
One of my favorite songs. Rob is my go to guy for learning songs but I just happened to search for this song on youtube and ran across another youtube instructer before I realized that Rob had a lesson on it. I learned from the other guy then happened to notice Rob had it too. Far superior lesson. Clearer, sounds truer to the original and just better all around. Make this your one stop shop for guitar tutorials. If Rob doesn't have it then go somewhere else but that should be the only reason. Great stuff
Great lesson. Thank you. I am studying all your lessons. Great content. You are a masterful teacher and I very much appreciate your style, knowledge and skill.
Thank you so much, Rob ! I love that song and yes indeed, the Last Waltz version is fantastic (and so is the rest of the documentary). Once again, you've done a great job ! Clem.
swiftlessons Considering all your videos, I assume we have the same musical tastes. So I can only recommend you to check out Jackson C. Frank's Blues Run The Game album if you haven't yet. I have very good tabs of some of his songs if you're interested. Cheers !
Really enjoyed this, never tried to play it though. Now I have another song in the book! Plus, the cheat sheet is really super nice, you have everything laid out there. It was all great, thanks so much.
Buddy Martin Hey glad you making good use of this lesson and that you're enjoying it. This has always been one of my favorites to play, and it truly is the quintessential sing-along. Thanks for reaching out. -Rob
Just stumbled upon your video. I will likely never use this intro, because my vocal range won't permit me to sing the song in the original key. HOWEVER, I would like to compliment you on one of the finest tutorials I have seen on RUclips! Your abilty to break down the song into well-explained, learnable segments is exemplary. Thank you!
+Tom Pillion Wow Tom, thanks for the positive feedback, it really means a lot and serves as a source of encouragement. Much more to come, keep checking back!
spoocyguy You know whats funny? I've been performing this song for at least 5 years...completely wrong haha, glad I finally got it down myself. Thanks for checking in. Looks like another well timed lesson. Be well. -Rob
swiftlessons Haha you dork :P How were you playing it before? Once I played it I realized it's the same chord progression as Dylan's 'Girl From the North Country'! What progression is that do you know? A C#m D for the weight and G Bm C for girl from the north country.
So A would be 1, C#m would be minor 3, and D is 4, is that right? How would you write a half step? So say A A# D it would be 1 (?) 4...Oh Van is my jam dude I will have to try that one out, I just wish peeps my age were more into Van the man, such classic, much nostalgia.
very good, perfect ! i like so much your voice, you play guitar perfectly and you have a cool style i like it ^^ really continue i follow you and you have the saoul
Raphael Gautier Thanks for taking the time to comment! Glad you enjoyed the lesson, and didn't mind my singing, haha. Many more are on the way, glad to have you as another RUclips student. Be well!
man you´re awesome.. i learn so much of your video's!! you make me sound fly for the lady's AND you make me a better guitar player! would be great if you could do a video of a tricky john mayer song on acoustic! cheers
It's funny cause out of a lot of the "lessons" on youtube, your version is probably the best one out there. I watched some cats playing the chords to this in such a way that it made no sense? Stretching, and jumping around all over the fret board... cramping positions ect...You play it in the way that leaves it simple, with mad dynamics still! It's like when Eddie said: "When I watch people playing VH stuff, and I watch how they play my stuff, and I have to tell em, I'm playing the stuff way simpler than they are." Or something close to that. Appreciate you. You made a bass players life a lot easier this morning.
Thanks, apparently there’s some debate on that. Here’s a quote from Robbie Robertson that I think puts it to rest: “The chorus I came up with was, “Take a load off Fanny”-not Annie, as many people think. I’m not sure I had the Gotham’s owner in mind when I used “Fanny.” But her name was certainly buried back there in my imagination. “Fanny” just felt rhythmic.” That’s is from an interview he did with the WSJ.
Sorry , I don't do Facebook. Is there anywhere else to pick up the info.? As I 've said before: very classy, concise, clear lessons !!! You do NOT waste anyone's time by talking about yourself with chatter. Other music teachers should use your style as a baseline to effectively put across the message without the : 'blah, blah, blah. ..... Lol. Thanks , Gk.
Great stuff! Very cool song and an awesome instructor for the job, I'll have try this out. There is a song that I would like to suggest-if you have the time-that I can not find any good lessons on, and that is Skinny Love by Birdie. Keep up the good work! Will be watching!
Thank you Rob. I’ve been picking for the past 35 years and you are teaching this old dog new tricks. You are a born teacher and an awesome musician. I’ve watched many different tutorials and you’re the only one that I truly get. Bless you my friend. All good things to you and yours.

If you doubt you can play this, realize that this gent is real good at teaching.
Definitely the best cover/lesson of this track on RUclips,
I like how you added your own flavour into the mix on the licks

Must agree with other comments, your step by step clear instruction makes learning songs a joy, Rob

+mywave inwoods Glad you enjoyed this, it's a real classic!
swiftlessons thanks very much, rock on
Too funny, was just watching the Last Waltz last night and asked myself how do I not know how to play this song yet? Way to go Rob!
spoocyguy You know whats funny? I've been performing this song for at least 5 years...completely wrong haha, glad I finally got it down myself. Thanks for checking in. Looks like another well timed lesson. Be well. -Rob
swiftlessons Haha you dork :P How were you playing it before? Once I played it I realized it's the same chord progression as Dylan's 'Girl From the North Country'! What progression is that do you know? A C#m D for the weight and G Bm C for girl from the north country.
I was playing it my way I guess... Its a 1. minor 3, 4 progression. Songwriting gold right there.
Another tune that uses it would be "It Stoned Me" by Van Morrison
So A would be 1, C#m would be minor 3, and D is 4, is that right? How would you write a half step? So say A A# D it would be 1 (?) 4...Oh Van is my jam dude I will have to try that one out, I just wish peeps my age were more into Van the man, such classic, much nostalgia.
Sweet! Thank you!
Awesome
finally a lesson on the bamd it drives me up th wall when I mention the band and they have no idea who I'm talking about :(

You should make a full cover on this song!
George Pruden Hoping to get into the studio real soon. This is one I would love to do!
It's take a load off Annie not fanny. Great rendition. Awsome work...
