The riff that made the twelve string famous! Here's a very brief history of the 12-string guitar and what led to the riff that made the 12-string famous. When it comes to the 12-string, there's a definitive line: what came before the Beatles' A Hard Day's Night and what came after. Early 12-string pioneers like Lead Belly, Blind Willie McTell, Fred Gerlach, and Pete Seeger paved the way for the first breakout 12-string song, The Rooftop Singers' classic "Walk Right In". But when the Byrds performed Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" on Ed Sullivan, with Roger McGuinn sporting his Rickenbacker 360/12, that the 12-string became a must have guitar for any band that wanted to capture the sound of the British Invasion or the California sound of the mid-60s. Learn how to play the riff that made the 12-string famous at 3:00!

We can not diminish the fact that John Denver was and continues to be a huge influence regarding the 12 String Guitar. He joined the Chad Mitchell Trio with his 12 back in 1965 as well as releasing his stellar hit “Leaving one a Jet Plane” that same year. I realize that many people choose to either forget or refuse to acknowledge John Denver as an incredible artist, humanitarian and alternative energy developer.
The songs that he wrote with the influence of the 12 String are so many that I would have to guess more than any other artist has or ever will be. His influence on my musical life has been profound, bordering on the spiritual. I started listening to him in 1970, pricked up the guitar that same year and have not sat it down for even a moment. Thanks for a great video and wonderful lesson..

I agree 100% with your comments, with an exception. Every video I’ve watched he plays 6 string but is so talented, he makes it sound like 12. An amazing gifted man who was unappreciated due to the tidal wave of progressive rock music in the early 70s. Friends mocked me when I went to one of his concerts and bought a t-shirt. Their loss.

@@seekingwisdom8 Jim, thank you so much. There are many concert videos available where John Denver plays his 12, especially the concert in Amsterdam and London. As an addition, many of the songs that John Denver composed and played were the seminal hits in his early days. Songs off of the albums Rhymes and Reasons (1969), Take Me To Tomorrow (1970), Whose Garden Was This (1970), Poems, Prayers and Promises (Album cover has him posing with the Guild 12 String) (1971) are many songs that were composed on the 12 String but they were unfortunately only played at certain concerts and not video taped.
Your remark about him playing the 6 String but how it sounded like a 12 is quite astute. On the album Evening with John Denver (1975) there are many times you can hear that exact effect. Notably, there were 5-6 guitar players on stage with him but the effect was spot on.
Have a great weekend and Thank You for the opportunity to reminisce about John Denver and his incredible catalog of songs.

Hey Bone CK. Kottke is one of my biggest influences and one of my guitar heroes. I'm working on a full length 12 string doc and I'm hoping to land an interview with him for it. Agreed for sure as Keith Potger's 12 string arpeggios on Georgie Girl are angelic and follow the whistling perfectly. The Seekers did popularize the 12 string guitar in early 1960s pop and folk music and opened the door to the introduction of the 12 string electric guitar.

No doubt "Walk Right In" by the Rooftop Singers did it for me, two full years before "Hey Mr. Tambourine Man". It was an international hit. And it was more than an eight note riff. The entire song utilized the 12 string. It was the reason I bought my first one, and still play one today.

Hey Dave. Absolutely Walk Right In was a huge hit and the fact that they used TWO 12 strings guitars was very notable. I recently read a great article about how they had to wait to record some of the promo films for the song because Gibson hadn't finished the lefty 12 string yet. And of course the Seekers had several hits that featured the 12. I'm still a sucker for Georgy Girl. LOL. This was one of my first videos and it was simply based on an interview I read with Rick 12 string creator Dick Burke who said that the Rick 12s went flying off the shelves after the Byrds released Mr. Tambourine Man. This is certainly not one of my best videos but all of a sudden it's received 200k views in the last week. I'd really appreciate it if you'd check out a newer video from the channel. Hey Michael. Absolutely, Walk Right In was the song that put the 12 string on the map. This was literally one of the first videos I ever did and I based it on an article I read with Dick Burke, the guy who created the Rick 12. Steve Goodman played 12 string - after being diagnosed and told that he had a chronic leukemia, he took the train down to New Orleans to meet his future wife and her parents. On the way he wrote "City Of New Orleans" (covered by Arlo Guthrie) - and performed it on a 12 string later in concert. Now there was a real guitarist - someone who mastered the instrument and didn't just strum it.

@@8MinuteAxe Do! If you haven't already - it's a fabulous song! I compare lead singer Beverly Bivens' performance on this song, to Judith Durham of the Seekers ( _Georgy Girl,_ _I'll Never Find Another You,_ _World of Our Own,_ _The Carnival Is Over,_ _Morningtown Ride,_ etc.).
Their voices aren't exactly similar, but both are excellent and very strong, in a way that their singing sticks with you once you've heard it.
As for the song, it was written by Sylvia Fricker of Canadian folk duo, Ian & Sylvia ( _Four Strong Winds,_ _Someday Soon,_ _Darcy Farrow,_ _Spanish Is a Lovin Tongue_ ). Ian Tyson is a top-flight songwriter, too, just BTW, having written much of I&S's repertoire.
And I&S also recorded _You Were on My Mind;_ it's worth a listen for comparison with We Five's version.

Only the intro part that sounds like a radio and the underlying rhythm throughout the song were recorded on a 12-string. A 1969 Martin D12-35 to be exact. It was a matter of necessity, not planned. The intro was originally recorded on a D35 6-string. They pulled the AM radio out of Gilmour's car, brought into the studio, and fed the recording through it. But, it sounded flat, so he switched to the 12-35. The reason being the fact that the low frequency sounds got muddied and lost when processed through the radio. The additional, fatter strings on the 12-string helped cut through. I've seen PF six times and Gilmour always played the primary acoustic part on a Martin D35, a Taylor 712CE ( ruclips.net/video/3j8mr-gcgoI/видео.html ), or his Gibson J-200, the underlying 12-string rhythm by another guitarist (pre-breakup - Snowy White). If you try playing the intro solo or main solo on a 12-string, it sounds way off with far too much bottom-end because of the extra, fatter E,A, and D strings. Interestingly enough, when I saw them in '77 for the "In the Flesh" tour at Anaheim Stadium, there was no acoustic. He played it on his Fender Strat "Blackie". Much of the reason the 6-string sounds bigger is the custom Pete Cornish pedal board Gilmour used. An electro-harmonix Electric Mistress pedal makes any guitar sound bigger due to the chorus effect.

Between the whole Hard Days Night album and the resultant rise of The Byrds I think that handles the all-time impetus for ELECTRIC 12-string.

I promise that you won't be disappointed when you watch the new video :) Don't give it away but you're right!: I will be uploading a new video tomorrow (Friday, March 5th) at 2PM called "The SONG THAT MADE THE 12 STRING FAMOUS?". Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/SfvYO9oPEv4/видео.html. I will be hosting a live chat starting at 1:45. I honestly think it's the best video I've ever done. I hope you can make the live chat but if not the video will be available as a regular video after the premiere at 2pm. Either way, I'm really hoping this video makes a dent in that confounding RUclips algorithm and I'd appreciate any help you can provide in pushing it along (multiple views, likes, comments, post on your FB page, anything and everything is appreciated). The video includes details regarding this month's Vangoa 12-String Giveaway. I will also be announcing the winner of the Orangewood Travel guitar on the livestream. I REALLY appreciate the support and I hope you and your family have an amazing weekend. Take care and be well.

The Rickenbacker reversed 12 string was what gave the Beatles middle career its distinctive sound. If I Needed Someone is the classic mid-Beatles sound. If anything was going to be famous in the 60s, it involved The Beatles. Surely, the intro to California Dreamin', The Byrds, or Mr Tambourine Man, are what made the acoustic 12 string famous in the sixties - then later a song like Give a Little Bit by Supertramp in the mid-70s reintroduced the acoustic 12 string into popular music.

McGuinn was a Banjo accompanist in the Chad Mitchell Trio before playing 12 string Guitar. A Banjo player uses various roll methods in their picking patterns. He brought that knowledge with him to Guitar and made use of it. So I agree with our speaker here that he would mix in treble strings with the more dominant large strings naturally on his part. It's just what Banjo players do. They want that ringing sound or what became to be called jingle jangle when he played 12 string Guitar. So I think our instructor is correct here in his breakdown of how McGuinn did what he did.

When I started playing and getting into music, I fell in love with Buffalo Springfield. it was then that I saw photos of Richie's bit 12 string Gibson and that's when I got hooked. Hey Mike. Absolutely Walk Right In was a huge hit and the fact that they used TWO 12 strings guitars was very notable. I recently read a great article about how they had to wait to record some of the promo films for the song because Gibson hadn't finished the lefty 12 string yet. Here's a cover I recently did of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS COVER AND LESSON ruclips.net/video/vZdVOj1wSr8/видео.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. I also try to be very interactive with the community that watches the channel. Hey Mark. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment. I did a video called the Top 8 12 String Riffs of All Time about 6 months ago and it's really taken off in the past month (about 20k views). The 12 string is borrowed and when I got it, it was in sorry shape. In the old video I tuned down a half step but I was still having intonation problems. I finally pulled it out again last week and did another overhaul (I even filed the saddle) and I think I have it sounding pretty good now. Check out the other video if you have time. Either way I do appreciate you. Have a great day!

Guitar videos are the only place in RUclips where you can flip everyone off and no one says a word, not a word. It's blatant & intentional and is the untold tale from the dark belly of the guitar underworld. True story bro :|

Hey man. Lol. That's too funny. I actually had lady who thought that I was doing it intentionally. I couldnt believe it. I have smaller hands and have fretted the same way since I was a kid. Years ago I was doing a gig in Norwalk, CT and a guy thought I was simultaneously flipping him off and hitting on his girlfriend. The funny part was how the situation got diffused so quickly. He immediately realized that I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. The look of utter confusion on my face made him realize how irrational he was being. As far as this video goes, it was one of my first and not one of my best. Although I really do appreciate your time and your comment was really funny, I'd really appreciate it if you would check something else out. I did a really cool cover of America - Ventura Highway -

Hey Tom. This was one of the first videos I ever did for the channel and I got the idea from an interview I read by the head designer at Rickenbacker who talked about how 12 strings went flying off the shelves after Mr T Man came out. Certainly, my history has HUGE gaps in it. Leadbelly was as important as anyone and was THE pioneer. I missed all the great songs by the Seekers. I also missed the Rooftop Singers song Walk Right In. I'm going to do a better documentary that's more accurate and doesn't have so many misses. If you have a few minutes, I'd really appreciate it if you'd check out another video on my channel. My video making has gotten much better. 😃 Hi, I'm no expert, but in reading the posts here I just had to speak While I agree with your pick and all the others mentioned, the first thing that popped into my head was Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant." 😁 I know this is not as "old," or as "first," but there's a Pete Seeger connection so I felt it worthy of a mention (other than darnit, you've got it running through my mind now, and I'm hungry for a Thanksgiving dinner! LOL!).

@@8MinuteAxe That's very kind of you. Sure, I'll watch those videos. I'll even sub. Not to sound like I'm bragging but a buddy of mine was a session musician back in the early 70's. When he first arrived in CA. Nesmith invited him to stay at his house until he was settled. Well, he stayed on there for 3 months and drove Nesmith crazy begging him to play his White Falcon. Nesmith finally gave in. (what a privilege ) Sadly that particular 12 string Gretsch of Nesmith's was stolen in the late 70's when he was on tour. No one has seen hide nor hair of it since.
