"Starship Trooper" and "And You And I" are inspired choices! I think that Steve Howe's 12-string work is some of the warmest ever recorded. I think that I would add some Genesis to the list though. They were known for their "twin 12-string" concept at one time. Rutherford and Anthony Phillips used to play together in arrangements that almost sounded like a harpsichord. That was eventually revisited on "Trick Of The Tail" after Peter Gabriel left. "Ripples" and "Entangled" are amazing.
The problem with putting a Genesis tune on a countdown like this is that the handful of songs that I could actually take a 15 second segment of and have it sound great are not really their best songs. The classics don't really have a singular part per se, at least not the ones I consider classics.
@@8MinuteAxe That makes sense. Those two tracks that I mentioned are quite beautiful, but there is no standout performance of 12 string. Hi Mark. Been playing 12-strings since I was 14 - I'm 73 now! I've only got two - it looks like you've got two too - DOZEN! I have a Maton that I've had for 50 years that Tommy Emmanuel says sounds superb, and a 1982 Guild D212 like Tom Petty played on Free Fallin'. One thing that surprises me is that you only have a Guild Starfire in your collection! Guild 12's are THE definitive 12-strings that everyone else aspires to - many of the other makes sound weak compared to them. As for favorite 12-string songs, any of Gordon Lightfoot's music where he was playing his 12-string is incredible - he had an unbelievable rhythm that few others could achieve, especially on songs like Canadian Railroad Trilogy! And I'm sure you've seen John Butler's home studio version of Ocean - THAT'S mindblowing! Great selection though, and great playing!
Well.... missed the life stream, disappointed. Happy New Year everyone! Watched the replay, great video again. Can I see the correct answers to the Nashville tuning contest somewhere? Congratulations to those that won!
What is really cool about " More Than A Feeling " by Boston, is that it was sung by one of the best Vocalist, if not the best in Rock, Brad Delp! No one to date has been able to go from a high D to a high E and sustain it longer than him in the world of Rock! However, " Closer To The Heart " by Rush will remain my all time Favorite. Great Video Mark !
Hey Charles. I never saw Boston live but I did see Brad when he was performing with Beetlejuice (one of the best Beatles cover bands ever). The way he died was so sad. Charcoal grills in the bathroom. Oh man.
Cool List Mark. I missed this live. forgot about the hour time difference. Remember everyone he included how much he liked a song. I think I don't know maybe 5 or so you played .Did you play them in order of your of Favorvite songs personally? Mr. Tambourine man # 1 or was it how important the 12 string part stood out in the song., I found it very clever you played Georges Bass part on ( I've Just seen a Face ) A rare Beatle song with no actual Bass Guitar. Great job Mark and Happy New Year to you and your subscribers
Hey, Mark! It's been a long time since I have had time to watch your videos. (Happy New Year!) I think you nailed the top 50 12-string songs of all time. You are so talented! I am very impressed by your ability to play all 50 songs -- even "Vaseline Machine Gun." Off-hand, I can't think of any significant omissions, except perhaps "It's Only Rock 'n Roll," which includes Ronnie Wood playing a 12-string guitar in the background. Thanks for including songs from Yes and Led Zeppelin!
Hey Kenneth! Great to hear from you. I hope you're doing well. I really appreciate you taking the time to check this one out and to send me your thoughts. Stay in touch. Mark
i'm just going to sit back, and enjoy this one, mark! i apologize for being tardy with my [brief] holiday email to you - well, to you and everyone else I should've written to! 😊
Hey! Thanks so much for checking out the video. For this one I stuck to songs that were originally recorded with a 12 or were frequently played live with a 12. Here Comes the Sun sounds amazing on the 12 but was done on a six string. I actually opened my last video playing Here Comes the Sun on the 12 ruclips.net/video/98EdJ7gjG6E/видео.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. You can never go wrong with the Beatles. Too good. Have a great weekend and take care. Mark
Hey Mark great list. Always love to hear the less popular bands like America and Zebra. One sour entry for me was #11…no way should that be 3 spots from Stairway😂
Honestly, when you start taking one song and pitting it against another in the rankings, it gets near impossible. I mean is Mama, I'm Coming Home really better than If I Needed Someone or All Along the Watchtower. Of course not. I get what you're saying for sure. An analogy would be when sales people say "for the price of a coffee.." Our brains don't work like that in the moment. At least mine doesn't. Excellent point though. for sure.
Great video! Awesome choice of songs, many of them my favourites. Suite Madame Blue is one of the songs that drove me to the 12-string guitar, followed by Give a Little Bit. But any of your choices are great tunes to play on 12-strings! Interesing...you put Starship Trooper, which was inspried by the book Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein, a book about fighting an interstellar war with only slower than light ships that are subject the effects of time dilation due to travelling at near reletivistic speeds between the stars. It is followed by another science fiction oriented song, '39 by Queen. It is another song is also about the effects of time dilation from travelling closer to the speed of light. Interestingly it seems that it is a popular subject for rock musicians. Off the top of my head, I can name at least a three other songs about the same subject...Spirit of the Age by Hawkwind, Aldebaran by the Canadian band FM, and interstingly, a song by Enya about the same subject with the same title as the FM song, Aldebaran.
Hey Farrell. I LOVE Supertramp. Rudy is one of my all time favorite songs as is Crime of the Century. I've never been a huge fan of Give a Little Bit but I like it well enough and I realize its importance in the 12 string canon. Thanks so much for weighing in. Much appreciated. Mark
Well, now you're obviously gonna hafta do a top 1000 in this category. Good luck! The irony of this sort of list is that the more you include, the more songs seem to be missing. As soon as _Wild Horses_ came up, I immediately thought of _Lady Jane, As Tears Go By,_ and _Playing with Fire._ And when you started _Hazy Shade of Winter,_ I was anticipating _For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her_ (which has a very striking, yet simple, 12-string part). Or _Mrs. Robinson,_ or _Fakin' It._ And the list goes on. . . I think that all this means is, it's a really good list, Mark. Thanks for dredging up so many wonderful memories. Fred
Mark, this was a righteous list: besides the obvious ones, you didn’t forget to included stuff from Leo Kottke [how could any 12-string list possibly omit him?], the Animals, Question, America, If I needed someone, Walk Right In, 8 miles high. some of the younger crowd might not even know some of these songs, but the influence they had in their time was tremendous, so you gave them their proper place. The only omission I would mention would be As Tears Go By.
Excellent. And "Hazy Shade of Winter" is such a forgotten piece...great that you included that one. --I've found 1970s Guild F412s take things to a high level; hope you put your paws on one of those.
No doubt this is my best video this year. I never set the bar that high. lol. Seriously, I appreciate your time and comment. Have a great weekend. Mark
I really appreciate that. My favorite parts are all the bass parts I learned as I was sliding down the rabbit hole and decided to record my own backing tracks for many...and for many that I didn't even use. DOH.
What a great list! There were a few that I have always loved but either didn't realize (or had forgotten) were 12-strings, so it was also educational. Well chosen and well done, Mark!

Should have been higher but I had to consider significance in Rock history to some extent. I didn't want to pull a Cliff Clavin. :). Thanks so much for checking it out. I sincerely appreciate your time and comment. Mark
Dude. Thanks. This is awesome. Also thanks for playing the Reverend 12 for us (and your review of it). It's one of the few electric 12's you can get as a lefty, so it's nice to know that it is an awesome axe.
Stumbled upon this, you , just now , and watched it in it's entirety. Your song choices was what I wanted to hear , all good choices . However, I watched more to hear your 12 string mastery . Seeing all the different 12 strings you played was a bonus .
I'm in my seventies and you've taken me on a journey back to my youth ad back again. You deserve a good pat on the back as you've obviously put a lot of work into this.
Mark- you are truly King of the 12-String (next to Roger McGuinn). Thanks for your flawless performances, and for inspiring each of us to practice a little more… 👍
Hey Mark. A really eclectic selection. Can’t really argue with any of them. Good to see a couple of Steve Howe numbers. As a personal preference I’d have probably included one of Greg Lake’s numbers. Either “Still….You Turn Me On” or “C’est La Vie”. Love the Rok-Lok by the way.
Haven’t played my Memphis ES-335 12 string in almost 10 years and now I want to. Very nice job! No Gibson 12? Now I just got to figure out which bed it’s under.
LOL. One of my viewers just got a vintage and another "picked one up" two days ago. I'm not such if it's new or what. I have the Memphis 335 6 string. It's actually in my lap right now. I use it for slide occasionally. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time. Have a great weekend. Mark.
Lots of your song selections I didn't know but the Sixties and early Seventies were very recognizable to me. I'm pretty much Fifties,Sixties, and early Seventies myself.
I really appreciate it Rodney. When I first started making 12 string videos.I came up with about 45 songs. Now I've got so many songs to choose from.I had to cut 25 classics. lots of great songs on the 12 string. Again. Thanks so much for the kind words and support. I hope you enjoy the rest of your Sunday. Take care and be well. MARK
@@8MinuteAxe you did awesome job putting all together. Thank you wery much. No 31 is on ny fav list, ikke most of the acustic ones you picked. Gives motivation to keep on practicing.
Hey Janko. That one and the Smith's tune are kinda representing their work as a whole. One of the few liberties I take when it comes to calling a song at 12 string is qualifying songs that may have originally been recorded with a six string, but have been known to be played live consistently with a 12-string. I have to admit, I used to love REM but I moved to Atlanta 15 years ago and I've heard more REM, Drivin' n Cryin' and B52s to last 10 lifetimes!! :). Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate your time. Mark
That was wonderful. You put a tremendous amount of work and effort in making this video. Kudos! I liked all of them although I must admit that some of those songs I haven't heard or know who recorded them. You "Eight Miles High" was very good.
Awesome list. this brought back a lot song memories I had forgotten. I would have thought a few more Leo Kottke songs, but then again he was never mainstream - but amazing 12 string. Thanks for the trip down 12 string lane!
For myself? Agree or not? That was a lot of fun & well played Thanks Boss. You made me want to pick up that old Ovation 12; that's been sitting on it's stand ignored. I'll see if I still remember those America songs I got it for. "Sister Golden Hair". Here I come.. lol
It is at that. LOL. I take my high G off occasionally and I totally get why he does it for that one. I learned most of it. The hardest part is the repetitiveness with subtle changes. It's just a lot to remember. He also never plays it exactly the same twice. I usually end up having some fun with it and then go off on a tangent and use that tuning to write my own, equally looong peddle tone. He's great though. And a great guy. Thanks so much for checking out the video Brian. I apologize for the delay in hitting you back. I'm finally catching up. I hope you're having a great week. Please take care. -Mark
This is so much fun to watch. Love that your playing seems so precise and conscientious. As for omissions, I'm sure I saw a video of Heart going to town on a 12-string for "Silver Wheels" / "Crazy on You".
An excellent list! I didn't realize that so many of those songs were done with a 12 string. My personal pick for #1 would be "Eight Miles High" with it's great solo...
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I received a couple of complaints but that's to be expected. Anytime a video becomes popular all of the advice on how to do it better starts rolling in. LOL. I don't mind though. I am grateful for the little success I've had. Thanks so much for your time and comment. Take care and enjoy the rest of your week. -Mark
Fun list! Here are a few others to consider. The La's "There She Goes", (there is a YT video of a live performance on Letterman using a Rickenbacker 12). The Byrds reunion album has a lot of tasty 12-string fills. "Laughing" from that album has it up front and center. Not a big seller, but always a favorite: Robin Lane & The Charbusters, "Don't Cry". The band was known for their electric 12-string sound, but their label deemphasized it during production for some reason.
Hey Jurgen. One of the real pleasures of doing the RUclips thing are all the amazing comments and everything that I learn. One of the few liberties I take when it comes to calling a song at 12 string is qualifying songs that may have originally been recorded with a six string, but have been known to be played live consistently with a 12-string. Some of the Smiths tunes and pleasant Valley Sunday are good example. Loud Family, the DBs, Robin Lane, and the La's are all great early to mid 80s power pop. The 80s version of the Flamin Groovies and the Nerves. I'll definitely check out that live performance. Thanks so much for your time. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe Determining whether an actual 12-string is what was played can be challenging given pedals, post-processing, Nashville 12s, overdubbing on videos, etc. I was going to add another power pop song, "Starry Eyes" by the Records until just before commenting, I saw a video of it being performed "live" on Midnight Special that I had never seen before, and what?! That doesn't look like a 12-string to me! We had a Rickenbacker 12 in the house when my kids were teenagers and one of my boys nailed the solo from that song using the 12. It sounded just right. Now, I'm confused about the recording vs. live. Cheers!
My brother stopped playing guitar when he was a teenager for various reasons after getting fairly good. To guilt trip him into picking it up again last year, I bought him a 12 string for his birthday. Lol, it worked. I've always loved the haunting quality that 12 strings have though, they are such a beautiful sounding instrument.
Glad you included some Leo Kottke as he was a true master of the 12 string. I also appreciated "Walk Right In". Along with it I would have included The Seekers "I'll never find another you". Very dominate 12 string part and Judith Durham can not be replaced.
Great list. I would have included Beginnings by Chicago. Terry Katy’s 12-string part is beautiful. I was going to say Norwegian Wood but it had a sitar and not a 12-string although it’s often covered as a 12-string. Love the channel!

And I'm sure you've seen John Butler's home studio version of Ocean - THAT'S mindblowing! Great selection though, and great playing!
Masterful job Mark, I am sure I could have got it down to 50 like you did. Happy 2024
😂I mean I couldn’t
The wheels are already turning for the "Can You Believe These Songs didn't make the list" video. LOL
Really well done, Mark. After another 10 viewings (just for enjoyment), I 'll be ready to discuss my ranking.
Research and investigation are always recommended. Thanks Carl!
Well.... missed the life stream, disappointed. Happy New Year everyone! Watched the replay, great video again.
Can I see the correct answers to the Nashville tuning contest somewhere? Congratulations to those that won!
I'm doing a drawing for all the entries as nobody got it right. All Nashville except Free Fallin. :)
Wow, very interesting how similar they are and hard to differentiate. It was a great contest. Thanks Mark.
Looking forward to this video 🎉
How do you feel now? lmao. thanks sal!
Oh man.
@@8MinuteAxe It was indeed sad! Brad had a voice for the ages!
Check out Jordan Lennon ... ruclips.net/video/KLR1B1rO790/видео.html
He does a pretty good job.
great video. a lot of work. i was there.
You are there.
Excellent selection
Much appreciated. Thanks for weighing in. Have a great weekend (and year!). Mark
Thanks for noticing. A TON of work went into the backing tracks. A TON.
Great video Mark! A few I definitely weren't familiar with.
I tried to be considerate of history but my own preferences ended up winning the day if there was a tie per se.
Great video Mark I do like it when you put the title of the song at the bottom I really don’t know most of them now I can see the ones I like thanks
Hey Robert. I wanted people to know the titles but not the artists to pique some additional curiosity. :)
Mark
on my second viewing I have to ask. How many 12-string guitars in the arsenal now?
two....too I mean, too many
Many thanks for your reply, Mark ! Keep up the great work (and playing) !
My pleasure Art. Thank you!
A great selection, Mark, you've outdone yourself! You had a few that even I didn't recognize!
Hey Dave. I really appreciate that. This one was a lot of work! I hope your new year is off to a good start! Mark
Thanks, Mark, I just need a new resolution about playing more!
shame i missed the livestream. i can't wait to get into the video
I put a lot of work into it. If you haven't watched yet, please pay special attention to the backing tracks. I put a TON of work into them.
Wow that was fun😀
That's because you didn't go down the rabbit hole recording backing tracks for songs that didn't make the cut. LMAO.
What a great collection of 12 strings.Your playing is right on time.
i'm just going to sit back, and enjoy this one, mark! i apologize for being tardy with my [brief] holiday email to you - well, to you and everyone else I should've written to! 😊
No worries at all my friend. I appreciate your time very much. They aren't making any more of it as far as I know. :)
Another great one "Here comes the sun" from the Beatles
Mark
Absolutely fine playing 12s. Always awesome to hear those.
Well, now you're obviously gonna hafta do a top 1000 in this category. Good luck!
The irony of this sort of list is that the more you include, the more songs seem to be missing.
As soon as _Wild Horses_ came up, I immediately thought of _Lady Jane, As Tears Go By,_ and _Playing with Fire._
And when you started _Hazy Shade of Winter,_ I was anticipating _For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her_ (which has a very striking, yet simple, 12-string part).
Or _Mrs. Robinson,_ or _Fakin' It._
And the list goes on. . .
I think that all this means is, it's a really good list, Mark. Thanks for dredging up so many wonderful memories.
Fred
I love the depth of a 12 string.
Possibly my favorite of your submissions of at least the last year... for sure the best of the year! ;)
No doubt this is my best video this year. I never set the bar that high. lol. Seriously, I appreciate your time and comment. Have a great weekend. Mark
Wonderful performances Mark! Inspiring!!
I really appreciate that. My favorite parts are all the bass parts I learned as I was sliding down the rabbit hole and decided to record my own backing tracks for many...and for many that I didn't even use. DOH.
Also love “We Just Disagree” Dave Mason
I forgot about it! LOL. It would have come in somewhere in the mid 30s. Shoot.
Just saw Dave Mason a couple weeks ago on the 70’s music cruise; that’s an awesome 12-string song. Please Add to the “Next 50” video!
@@jamoncure
Open E tuning, not too difficult
What a great list! There were a few that I have always loved but either didn't realize (or had forgotten) were 12-strings, so it was also educational. Well chosen and well done, Mark!
Great list. I have the Eastwood 12 string. Love it. Lyin’ Eyes is a good one to add to the list.
I hope you lead a 12-string renaissance. Thanks for all the awesome examples of why it's such an important instrument.
hey Brian, I really appreciate that. I was astounded at how few 12 strings were at the name show this year. Let me know if you need any tabs. Everything is free. Shoot me an email at Markaranalli@gmail.com. I really appreciate you. Checking out the video. Enjoy the rest of your week. Mark
I’ve always loved the 12 string guitar, so it’s great to see someone with such talent and enthusiasm show what it can do. Thank you.
So many more songs than I realized had 12-strings in them. I really learned a lot.
Very nice selection
A little Ambrosia. Nice, Nice, Very Nice.
38. Big Star "Watch The Sunrise" ♥♥♥
i think its the best one....been playing it for a month now...open G (really open F...full step down for safety) for life!
Should have been higher but I had to consider significance in Rock history to some extent. I didn't want to pull a Cliff Clavin. :). Thanks so much for checking it out. I sincerely appreciate your time and comment. Mark
😮Wow!, ... intense memory lane, gives inspiration to my RB612 BK. You're honnerd and blessed. Gratitude to you, sir🎶👌🙏
Dude.
Fantastic list!!
Hey Hollywood. Thanks so much. I really appreciate that and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope you have a great weekend. Please take care. Mark
second comment - so many fantastic tunes here, mark! thanks again!
You're still more than welcome. I really do appreciate the support more than you know.
Thank you for the Rok-Loc’s. The are wonderful.
I'm in my seventies and you've taken me on a journey back to my youth ad back again. You deserve a good pat on the back as you've obviously put a lot of work into this.
Excellent ❤
Hey MommaHub. Thanks so much. I like your hat too! Mark
Mark- you are truly King of the 12-String (next to Roger McGuinn). Thanks for your flawless performances, and for inspiring each of us to practice a little more… 👍
Impressed you had under the milkyway. One of the best least-known-greats.
Great list, well-played! :)
Hey Brother. Always great to hear from you. Much appreciated. Have a great weekend.
Glad Henley left HC alone (Another one is Too Many Hands from One of These Nights )
Yeah Errett. I don't know how or why but I had no trouble this time.
Thanks dude!
Thank you Brian. I sincerely appreciate your time and support. I hope you have a great weekend. Mark
Goodness! loved this, the 12-string is an art in itself and this selection was wonderful... much love 😊
Great list and thank you for mentioning Hole Hearted….
That was really amazing. 👏
Finally bought my first 12 string and you are a source of inspiration and discovery - thank you
Excellent concept. Expert presentation. Great guitars!
Mark.
Well done and chapeau for all yours 12string Guitars
Awesome!!! From the Irish old man to the amazing Italian kid, great job!!!!
What a great video! That you can play all 50 of these songs is very impressive.
nice work! I just got a 12 string so I'm gonna learn half these songs!
Lots of your song selections I didn't know but the Sixties and early Seventies were very recognizable to me. I'm pretty much Fifties,Sixties, and early Seventies myself.
Me too. :)
Wow that Guitars Amazing!... I wish one!.
Awesome video !!
MARK
Great!
Cant wait 😂😂
Was it worth it. lol
@@8MinuteAxe you did awesome job putting all together. Thank you wery much. No 31 is on ny fav list, ikke most of the acustic ones you picked. Gives motivation to keep on practicing.
Considering your list, and the fact that you own a 12-string Rickenbacker, you're obviously a huge Byrds/Roger McGuinn fan
I like that you added So. Central Rain. Not a lot of people know that one.
Mark
Man you convinced me , I'm now a subscriber, thank you the video was great
That was wonderful.
Here I come.. lol
Props for including John Butler’s Ocean! Although technically I think it’s an 11-string song :)
-Mark
What an Exceptional video, Outstanding playing, would love to see you play all 50 all the way through...
This is so much fun to watch. Love that your playing seems so precise and conscientious. As for omissions, I'm sure I saw a video of Heart going to town on a 12-string for "Silver Wheels" / "Crazy on You".
So nice to see Zebra's "Who's Behind the Door?" on this list! Such an underrated and little known, but extremely talented band...
An excellent list! I didn't realize that so many of those songs were done with a 12 string. My personal pick for #1 would be "Eight Miles High" with it's great solo...
Wow this is cool because I was able to Name the artist along with the title of the song
Now, I'm confused about the recording vs. live. Cheers!
Awesome!!!
Mark, I just noticed you had added '39 to the list. It is one of my favs, so appreciate it and I believe I recommended it to you before.
Excellent list and some killer choices. Two other tunes I can think of are Bluetones "Slight Return" and Oasis "Sad Song".
