David Gimour was asked in an interview why he plays a 12 string. He played a couple chords and replied "Just listen to that. You tell me" That says it all.
Oh man. I love that story. I recently watched the Wish You Were Here documentary again. Great stuff. When I was little the Wall was popular but by the time I started playing guitar David Gilmour was pushed to the side in the guitar mags (the only source of learning stuff at the time) for Vai, MacAlpine, DiMeola, Morse. It was all about playing fast. Finally around 1995 I got my head on straight and realized that Gilmour is the most melodic soloist on the planet (I give a nod to Dickie Betts too, what he does over 3 minutes with 5 notes in the middle of Blue Sky is beautiful). I've played the 12 couple of times, though I never owned it. It just sounds so much richer, fuller and warmer. David's answer is really only possible answer to that particular question. Gold

LMAO. Nicely played Lance. If you're serious about being stuck in start I'd be happy to help you get on learning path that won't require a lot of time (15 minutes a day, 4 days a week) and will result in success. The best part is there is no charge. No angle or purchase down the road. There are tons of free lessons out there and I'll give you a blueprint to follow. I've been teaching for 30 years (a lot of people throw that out but I have spent 12 of those years teaching full time) and I can't tell you how many 30, 40, 50, 60 somethings say they wish they took it up when they were younger. Many of those people are excellent guitar players today. Again, if it was just a joke, it was funny! :)
@@8MinuteAxe 8 Minute Axe I know I'm about a month late on this, but I just discovered your channel. If you're still willing, I would love to have a blueprint/path towards learning guitar again. I owned one as a child and taught myself how to copy a few songs, but never even learned the basics, and it just ended up collecting dust for years. I'm getting ready to try picking it up again, and I really don't know where to start, but I could definitely cut 30 minutes out of my day to dedicate to practice.

I'd be happy to get you started. I'll have more time tomorrow to get you set up on a plan but for now give me the basics. What type of music do you listen to the most (or the one that you're most interested in playing)? 30 minutes is more than enough time to get you moving very quickly. I normally recommend no more than 15 minutes at a time to start with for a couple of reasons. There is going to be a 2 to 3 week period at the beginning where the fingers are going to be a little sore and the bulk of the frustration comes at the beginning. I've taught hundreds (if not thousands) of students over the years and if you can make it past the first couple of weeks you will see massive improvement quickly. Right now Fender is giving away three months of free lessons to the first 100,000 people who respond. I recommend you go there as soon as you see this and see if you can get in. I looked over the lessons and they're very well thought out. You could use those as your main source and you can reach out to me anytime with questions. My email is markaranalli@gmail.com. Also, “More Than A Feeling” is recorded ‘double’-there’s a name for this term that escapes me, but they play the same guitar part and it’s played one track stacked on top of the other

No, it wasn't. It was layered 6-strings, only emulating 12 strings --- and this guy plays it wrong.

So I'm in the middle of editing a new video, your comment comes in, and I start laughing so loudly, my fiance asks me what's going on. You're probably the 10th person to point it out and you're so right. Honestly, all of the gigs and sessions over the years did not prepare me one bit for being in front of the camera. This was probably the 5th or 6th video I shot. In the first couple I couldn't even remember my name! And as far as executing the riffs. Jeez. These are riffs I've played effortlessly 1000 times yet I could barely get through them and still had to settle for a couple with choked out notes. I hope you at least enjoyed the comedy at the end where Don Henley kicks the crap out of me! I felt much better doing that. Anyway, I'd like to think I've improved a little. Nothing wrong with 6 string, but the 12 string gives your ear that extra love. My musical memory is enhanced by 12 string music.

I really appreciate you saying that. I was just telling another viewer that I don't even bother commenting on some of my favorite youtubers videos because I would rather be ignored than get a 'thanks man'. I don't mean to knock anyone and yes it's easy when you have less than 1000 subs to respond (the extra traffic lately has me taking an hour a day to respond, time that I enjoy the most) but if I got to the point where it was impossible to respond it would probably mean that I was making money from the channel at which time I could get someone to help me edit these darn videos and free up more time to interact. Anyway, I don't want to sound like I'm blowing my own horn. I genuinely value your time, and I appreciate it very much. Take care and stay healthy.
8 Minute Axe absolutely man, you’re a genuine guy and that’s hard to come by anymore, I’m looking forward to seeing your channel grow, and I would never hold it against you that you couldn’t reply to every comment, I would just look back to the time that you did and be happy that I was worth your time, and if your channel does grow a lot, it would be like counting the stars to try and reply to every comment.
It definitely is very time consuming to respond to everyone. I'm long winded on top of that. LOL. My channel is still getting about 10 times the views that a 1400 sub channel should get and I know things will go back to reality soon, but I've been logging on twice a day, and spending about an hour each time responding to everyone. The hardest part is that comments that are in thread replies don't pop up in my unanswered queue so I have to manually go through each video and make sure someone didn't send something at the end of a thread. Surely, those will be impossible to respond to if the channel continues to grow. I'm also a believer in karma. I figure if I do the right thing for the right reasons, good things will come. The best part of the recent success is that I can look my 9 year old in the eye and say 'you see what happens when you work hard and do the right thing!'. He watches YT all the time and at first didn't understand how I didn't have 1 million subs. I've kept him in the loop and when I was celebrating getting 5 subs and 50 views in one day he understood better how hard it is now to even get the little success I've had. Playing the 12 string definitely gets addictive. All of these were fun to play. I'm making an instructional on the best way to play Hotel Cali live acoustic solo and I'm assuming that most guys don't own a 12 string or at least don't lug to a gig, but it just doesn't sound as big with the 6. 6 and 12 string have their places in the songs and none was more evident to my ears than Over The Hills and Far Away as it's one of my favorite Zeppelin tunes. Very nice playing and comparisons to hear.

LOL. This video is like the albatross around my neck. I believe it was the third video I ever did and I didn't expect anyone to watch. Believe me, if I knew 200k people were going to see it, I would have cut out that creepy stare after each song and done a much better job with the performances. I carried my 6 and 12 strings with me for years with my band. In places too small for me to have 3 guitars on stage I used my 6 string with a chorus pedal to help replicate the 12 string sound on Hotel California.
A chorus pedal sounds like a 12 string... Get that right!
I honestly thought I had fallen into yet another big guitar channel to subscribe to, but it was actually a very humble person who deserves way more attention than you are getting currently. You deserve all the popularity you will get eventually.
I really appreciate the kind words. I've met so many cool people because of this. Way better than the grind of being on the road. LOL. I decided that whenever I came across a channel smaller than mine (however big or small that may be) I would offer to give the channel a shout out or do whatever I could to promote them. I'm excited about the fact that I now have a little to offer. So far I came across 2. I made the offer and both blew me off totally. Anyway, I don't mean to put others down. ive always wanted a 12 string, but for guitar being more of a personal hobby than a real passion, i cant justify the cost. also tuning would be a nightmare haha. Also, theres something seriously positive about seeing how someone doesnt edit out the little mistakes. (dead notes/mis-frets) i really appreciate that sort of thing. makes guitar videos a bit less crushing for an ameteur like myself. awesome video, man, and well-played!

I bought an Ibanez 12 for $300 (I borrowed the 12 string in the first video from a student) but I'm going to send it back. I have my eye on a used Taylor 150e ($600) but like you said, its a very specialized instrument. I already have 6 electrics and 3 acoustics and after all these years I'm still only able to play one at a time! LOL. Thanks so much for watching the video and for your comment. im playing bassguitar for 10 years now,and i played with bands most of the time,so i played electric guitar sometimes for fun,but never wanted to buy one,then i started working in small guitar store in my town,most of the guitars was classical and acoustic and one guy ordered 12 string guitar,so i checked if is everything okay,wood,paint,frets and i tuned it (it took me long time) :D but when it was in tune,from that moment i knew that my first guitar will be 12 string! i bought one in two weeks! even people which dont know anything about guitars,when they hear 12s, they notice that something is different,thats what i love about it! good video,new subscriber!

Hey Parthiv. I really appreciate that. The channel is about to turn one. At six months I had 250 subs and I would get about 3 comments a week. I committed to myself that if the channel ever popped a little, I would answer 100% of all comments, replies, and emails. I'm closing in on 4k subs and I truly believe it's a result of doing the right thing. I try to give each viewer at least as much time as they're giving me and I pay careful attention not to fall into the 'thanks man' trap. I will write that every once in a while if someone is trolling me or being an ass but I've been very lucky with that too. Only a couple of trolls and everybody has been so cool. I recently purchased an old 12 string guitar, which was inspired by my affection for Tom Petty. Good song selection (even without Tom). I watched this video with my three kids (13, 13, and 16), who asked me to subscribe (although I had already done so). Thanks for including Rush/Lifeson. That went over well with the family.

Hey man. What a great song. Funny thing. Back in the early 2000s my band opened for David Byrne in NY in front of maybe 1000 people. About three weeks later we opened for the Tom Tom Club (Chris and Tina's band) in New Haven in front of about 500 (200 of which we brought in). I thought to myself, if only they could patch up their differences they could have played in front of 25,000. Band relationships can be tough though. More complicated than family sometimes. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video and I appreciate your comment. My channel has subsequently become primarily focused on all things 12 string. Interesting that you bought a 12 string for your first guitar. I bet it was a little tough to start but you must have been a beast when you switched to the 6 string? What type of stuff do you play? I'm thinking of doing a video about songs that were originally recorded on a 6 string but would have sounded better on a 12. This one was borrowed from a student and was in rough shape. I recently put some work into it (filed nut, sanded saddle) and I have it sounding much better now. 8 Minute Axe thanks a lot friend . Yes I am a German but living since 30 Years in Madrid Spain , I married a Spanish women , and moved.., never regretted . The Takamine I bought is the G3 DC 12 . It was really hard to me to make a decision, but finally I rememberd , Nils lofgren, Glenn Frey, Bonjovi.. and all the others , this couldn’t fail. And the Takamine is ver good and loud (Dreadnought body) will have a look at hour video and leave you a comment and like and subscribe. Keep on playing , and stay healthy.

Hi Axe, really enjoyed the video, and loved the part with Don Henley! I was wondering if you have any tips for people who get a lot of wrist/hand/forearm pain from guitar playing - especially from barre chords. I'm also not a beginner which I imagine is the group most affected by the problem! I think I've picked up bad habits of squeezing too hard for barre chords. Thanks.

Hey Daniel. Thanks so much for the positive feedback on the video. I'm really glad you enjoyed it. One thing you can try is to economize your effort. It's something that I really focus on when teaching kids. Don't squeeze the chord until you're ready to play it. Eventually, you'll get used to this. A side benefit will be that it will help you control other notes from ringing out. Another idea would be to forgo barre chords altogether. Tim Pierce has an excellent video on how he rarely uses barre chords anymore. Try using different voicings. If you need any help with it, feel free to email me and we can discuss in more detail. A couple songs I'd love to hear on a 12 string are 'The Breakup Song' by the Gregg Khin Band, 'A Horse With No Name' by America and ... I had a third one but I can't remember what it was. Oh well, those two would sound amazing on a 12 string. OH, not the one I was thinking of but I bet 'As My Guitar Gently Weeps' would sound pretty good on one.
I've never owned one either. But man do I want one. This is an amazing concept for a video man. Loved it!

Thanks again Sean. I didn't even know what aperture was when I started. Slowly getting the hang of it. I need to sound proof the studio now. I get that echo even close miked with lav like I am with this video. As a matter of fact, until I treat the room properly, I switched to having an SM57 just out of camera. Almost the same quality and I don't have to fool with the lav. :)

My reason for that number was because I figured that 80 to 100 of those would actively engage and I want to get to the point where I can do live streams where we can all get together and either share ideas, I can give a lesson, or even just talk classic rock. The amount of comments you reply to is just mind blowing, i’ve been playing guitar for about 2 years now and i’ll i know are simple chords. The only ones i know are Am A C D Dm G E Em F G in their original power chord shape. I mostly like playing pop songs that are 4 chords on repeat throughout most of the songs. Any advise or new information I should learn? Also I have no idea how to play the scale and have to remember Ever American Dad Goes Bald Eventually when figuring out what string i’m on.
