12 string guitars, they're not just for Beatles, Byrds and Hair Metal Ballads!
A collection of some tracks that get left off all those other lists of "greatest 12 string songs". I've tried to show the versatility of the 12 string guitar sound. What songs did I forget? let me know in the comments, but check out part 2 first! • Ten Overlooked 12-Stri...

I do not really understand why, but this video feels so much better than an average guitar video
Good color, good angles, and good audio.
It's because there's twice as many strings.
Because he isn’t trying to melt your face off
something about a twelve string, am i right?
No shredding in drop Z
I tried singing along to Sloop John B when you were playing it. 3 coyotes in the back yard started howling.
Crossroads! An to be who grew up in the Midlands in the 60s and 70's knows that one off by heart.....
Brian May uses a 12-string to play ‘39, one of my favorite deep cuts off of A Night at the Opera, and quite possibly one of the best Queen songs ever written.
That or the prophet song off the same album. Both are crazy underrated because of bohemian rhapsody.
I really love that song.
Brian May is probably the most underrated guitarist of all time. "39" fantastic tune!
And on Long Away too
Love this! I've been searching for 12 string guitar songs from mostly the 60's & '70's, and actually ones that are lesser recognized. Thanks, man!
Thank you, Thank You Thank You. I have a martin 12 string I was neglecting and you started a fire under me to play it again!
Dylan! Awesome job on these great 12-string songs. As a 12-string player it’s great to hear some “lesser known” tunes.....and gives me more stuff to work on! Will check out your other videos for sure. Thanks for your talent, dude!!! JoAnn
Really enjoyed this video. Excellent playing. Thanks for the memories.
Other 12 string songs
That people don't talk about enough
"The rain song", "over the hills and far away"
Chilli peppers have a 12 string song, Breaking the girl"
Good songs, but they're on plenty of "top twelve string songs" list, OTHAFA for example:
ruclips.net/video/EAYA8q_jVXI/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/tsp8ue3E_ac/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/yn0EQ9E5W5A/видео.html
As I know The Rain Song isn't played in a 12 string. Its an acostic and one eletric, and live just the 6 string eletric.
But over the hills and far away is a classic too
The Song Remains The Same I would say too.
Franco Dallago How about Give a Little Bit by Supertramp.
Yeah but chilli peppers are drivel
Dylan Pank still have yet to find tangerine.
OMG Crossroads theme! Great selection of tunes and brilliantly executed. Thanks!
Watched your Pt 2 first, then looked for this one. Absolutely fantastic, both of them.
Thanks, so glad you enjoyed them. 🙂
One of the absolute best videos Ihave heard. Great job.
Just received my Danny 12 yesterday. Love it. My band does about 4 of these songs. Good shit man.
Wow, how good is this! So many great parts being played here by someone who is clearly a 12 str deep diver! Thx so much, I'm gonna love discovering the full songs for many of these.
Excellent selection of riffs, thank you!
i just got the same Danelectro today. Looking forward to playing each of these songs - thx!
The twelve string makes such an uplifting sound.
One humdinger after another!
I dont understand why there are thumbs down. Love the tones. Always said I grew up in the wrong era, 80s baby, but still enjoy the classics.
Nice list of songs. It shows the need for more contemporary 12 string songs. Beautiful sound.
Incredible performances! What a treat this was! Thank you! 🎸♥️
Wow, that's really kind of you to say so, glad you enjoyed them.
This is some of best twelve string playing I've seen on RUclips and great to keep away from the usual cliche songs
Some great songs to be sure.
Beautiful tone from your skillfully playing.
thats so cool and beautiful playing thank you so much.
‘Walk Right In’ - the Rooftop Singers. While there’s not much love for 12-strings out in the music world, I love my Guild 12-string. Thanks for the video. I’m not alone.
Eyes
Great job sir! Wasn't familiar with some of them but they all sound nostalgic when you give them that 12 string chime.
My 2 go-to songs whenever i get near a 12 string are Under a Milky Way and The Waiting. It was good to hear one of them. Great job.
Ahh, Killing Moon and Mysterious Ways - great choices!
Every song sounded good !!! Thanks
The Church! Yes! I didn't know that was 12 string. Such a great album.
Great fun song to play, very easy which makes it a blast to sing and play, but I recommend using the low end to get a fatter sound to hear the changes more sharply if you're playing without backing tracks. Fun times.
The talent level of your playing (all parts) is impressive. Your arrangements and recording skills are excellent. All things considered it's a very entertaining video. Thank You.
Some real nice picks there. Kudos.
I've had "When You Walk Into the Room" on my mind a long time, but never knew the name. Thank you!
Great playlist! thanks!
A lot of U2 songs were recorded with a Rickenbacker 360-12. For “Mysterious Ways,” the only thing I’d say is missing is that the Edge slides down the fretboard after he strikes the B chord. It has a pull-off sound that people tend to recognize when you do that. When talking to the Edge’s guitar tech, Dallas Schoo, he said that he wasn’t sure Mysterious Ways was recorded with a 12 string, but the Edge has always used the Rickenbacker 12-string for live performances. He said “the sessions for that album were all over the place and his Gibson Les Paul Custom was used for almost every song around that period, but it could have been his Strat or even his Epiphone Casino for all I remember.” The Edge tends to always sound like himself, so figuring out which guitar he used is very hard. For instance, Dallas confirmed the Edge used his Les Paul Custom for “Desire” on the Rattle & Hum album track, but when it was played live in studio for the Rattle & Hum movie, the Edge used a Gretsch White Falcon because he had it readily available and no one really heard a difference.
Nicely done. Can’t believe I missed this for 3 years.
Great selection of songs
What a great vid, man! Everybody else plays the same predictable "big" 12-string hits, this is golden.
Been trying to figure out the last part of the Bluetones riff for ages....thank you sir!!!
Excellent playing and wow, you really make that electric DC59 12 string sound fantastic! I've seen other reviews of that guitar and so far none of them have been very inspiring, but you make that thing sound just as good as a Rickenbacker! Excellent!
I didn’t realize many of these were 12 string songs but now that I see this, I don’t know why I didn’t make that connection before. Especially being a guitar player myself.
Really like hearing an in tune 12 string properly intonated and played precisely!
Also Selected songs are very choice examples.
Even when listening to the original recordings, the 12 string is a bit muffled or lost in the mix. This video really brings the 12 string alive!
"wouldn't it be nice" by the beach boys has an intro played with 12 strings which is so unique and lovely.
Your video production is superb. Exactly the way I’m planning to do things when I start this year.
Subscribed and shared. Well done.
This is really cool. Great job! And that Danelectro 12-string sounds pretty good.
I love how you picked some really good tunes that aren’t super well known. Especially Hazy shade of winter. Nice
Yeah, each tune was a delight for that reason.
Fantastic song!
That last one, Hazy Shade of Winter, came out about the same time as Paul Simon's "Scarborough Fair". Listen to the latter on 12-string. Later, listen to Crosby ,Stills and Nash: Guinevere. Beauty
nice playing Dylan thank you.
The sound of that danelctro sounds so damn good I keep watching the video over and over again because it sounds so good!
I also stumbled upon the Crossroads theme when I got my first 12 string, I'm glad that I'm in good company.
XTC, Echo & the Bunymens ..I love it !
Nice! I have a Dano 12/6 double neck and the 6 side is strung with baritone strings.
Lots of fun and options.
Man, this brings back memories.... GREAT JOB !!! - Doug a.k.a. "Crossbow", BMI, songwriter...former touring/live/stage, recording, etc. ... good to hear 'em "live", again ... keep 'em coming !!!
Brilliant video and great playing
Wow! Came here as I’ve had my 12 string for a while now and not using is as much as I should- and what do I hear but my bloody all time favourite song in the world!!! (Killing Moon) followed by Under the Milky Way, which is a close runner up. Your choices are spectacular and really inspiring. You’re also an excellent guitarist. In summary, thanks a million! Now I’m no longer constrained to Fisherman’s blues to exercise my 12-string 😂👍
The Crossroads theme tune! Haven’t heard that for years, since I was a kid
Good one 👌
Wings did a great cover on Venus and Mars, and apparently the Wings version was actually used on the show sometimes for cliffhangers.
Man, I’m loving this!
Great Playing!
De Música Ligera by Soda Stereo is a latin Song that uses a 12 string
Pero es imposible olvodar esa rolita;)
Gustavo uses a fender electric
Great selection. XTC and The Bunnymen in particular.
Wish i had that talent to be able to play guitar ? Always amazed at how musicians can remember all those chords
A video like this could literally go on for hours.
Man! That Danelectro sounds great! I thought it was a Richenbacher at first
The Dano 12 has separately adjustable saddles (two for each pair of strings) which gives it better intonation than many electric 12's. I believe the classic Rickenbacker 12 has only 6 saddles, and probably doesn't sound as good up the neck as the 12-saddle Dano (I have the Dano, but not a Rickenbacker).
I’ve got one of these and LOVE it. They are very adorable as well. Great twelve string jangle!
@@islander4986 The 6 saddle thing isn't as big a deal that that if you match the string gauges between the octave and bass strings carefully.
Fret height and action makes a bigger difference. The frets on Rics are SUPER low which improves intonation as much or more a than 12 saddle bridges.
@@DylanPank71 The 12-string is probably inherently a compromise intonation wise, even more than a 6-string, which most instrument authorities will say are imperfect too. I've never played a Rickenbacker, but I was pleased to see the ingenious 12-saddle bridge on my Dano after playing some Acoustic 12's with intonation issues. I'm not a big fan of super low action or small frets myself. My main 6-string is a strat with a Mighty Mite neck that I scalloped for this very reason. I'm confused about what you mean by "matching" string gauges in the octave pairs. I've only used pre-packaged 12-string sets (Ernie Balls?).
Love that sound, some of my fave 12 string riffs. And theme from Crossroads 'yes Miss Doiyan'. Would have added ' the Waiting ' by Tom Petty but not complaining coz sounds great. Many thanks, I need a Dano 12 in my life now !!!
the Hollies' "Look Through Any Window" and "King Midas in Reverse" are two good ones
lunarpollen let’s go someone else said it I was gonna comment this the Hollies deserve so much more credit than they get
13 years in youtube :o tas bien?
You have good taste, style, chops, ears and recording engineer skills!
Very nice to listen too as well as watch.
Nice selection of tunes and nicely played 👍
I didn’t expect Senses Working Overtime. I was expecting Mayor of Simpleton, but a chance I get to see XTC anywhere out of the blue is one I’d love.
wonderful .
Nice selection across the ages
Awesome 12 string labor !!!
Glad that you played The Killing Moon and Under The Milky Way. There are also classic songs by Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Sisters Of Mercy, The Cure, The Mission...
oh.. yea do a part two with these please
This is my world of 12 string songs.
I think Hazy Shade of winter would sound amazing on a Danelectro 12
Great list. Great songs!
This is SO good!
Brilliant!! The strange thing is that my girl always says that the start of "Eight miles high" by the Byrds sounds like "Crossroads theme" !!!
Gah that Phil Spector Wall of sound at the beginning. You nailed that tone sir!
OMG killing moon is 12 string! I never realized one of my fav tracks and I just recently got myself a Schecter 12! great vid man some great picks here!! GORGEOUS guitar man!!!!!
I don't care if out of tune, sounds sweet, love it
this is rocking ,good player
Thank you. ☺️
I still have a Fender Sidekick 10!!...good little amp!!...
Big fan of the 12 string sound well done.
Outstanding!
The Killing Moon and Under the Milky Way were both used in the film, Donnie Darko!
very good taste and playing
Thank you for the kind words.
Nice work. Fun! Thank you.
Crossroads. Excellent. 👍
Senses working overtime got me
@06:25 dude, watch your cable man.. 😭 I could feel the pain
Ouch...this video should be reported
Good lookin’ out, man! Decades ago, I switched to 90/180° and 90/90° instrument cables for precisely this reason. Because some amps can’t accept a 90° plug, I keep a couple of 90/180° cables in my gig bag in case we play through somebody’s backline. The 90° end is also good for standing while playing because it doesn’t stress and break the cable when you route it between the strap and button to prevent it being pulled to and fro as you rock TF out!
Now, most Strat players will point out that the majority of 90° plugs don’t work with their Strat because of the input jack plate’s indented design, but there is a workaround for that, and it’s one you may switch to if your main gig guitar is a Strat and you’d like to improve its function.
One of the guitar heroes back in the mid-70s (I can’t remember which one,) mentioned in a Guitar Player Magazine interview that inverting the input jack’s mounting plate so that it sits on top of the body not only made it possible to use a 90° plug with his Strat, but it also made it much easier than before to plug and unplug both 90° and 180° cables from it. My working Strats’ mounting plates have been inverted like this, ever since. I unfortunately it never looks as pretty, since the chrome plating on that back side is usually a bit duller than the front, but because it’s a performance mod instead of a cosmetic one, it doesn’t bother me. But the thing is, it’s not a permanent change, and you don’t need to desolder or cut the output wires to invert the plate, or restore it to its original orientation.
The Killing Moon part was incredible. Great work in general!
Just saw this on Facebook. Nice collection of songs. You play the 12 string very well. I had a Crafter like yours. It was a great 12 string
.
More honorable mentions -
Turn Turn Turn / The Byrds
Jeremy / pearl Jam
Hole Hearted / Extreme
Actually, Pearl Jam' s Jeremy is done with two six string guitars, but the bass is a twelve string. That's why it has that big sound. But all are great songs indeed! 👍
_Hole Hearted_ is a pretty good call. Might pinch that for Vol. II. I think _Turn Turn Turn_ probably gets mentioned (honourably or otherwise) enough.
Nirolevy1 Jeremy is a 12 string bass
"Mr Tambourine Man" intro as well
Fantastic, thank you. I own a Dano baritone; maybe I should record a baritone guitar compilation 🤔
I see a lot of people commenting songs that people mention and play all the time, read the title. Lots of people listen to REM, Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, etc.
Great vid/list! Wasn’t expecting to see XTC in there. Love it!
Or Killing Moon
Very nice!
Good stuff there Dylan, thanks for sharing! My two cents from the sixties: We Fives song "You Were on my Mind" and "Look through any Window" by the Hollies.
Gotta get a Danelectro now.
PhatLvis It’s my favourite guitar to play, it sounds and feels great to play!
Or you can use one of these- www.digitech.com/mod-effects/Mosaic.html
My first guitar was a Silvertone 1448 made by Danelectro. Wish I still had it. Nice sound from the 12 string!
Dano DC59-12 I used to own one of these but underused it so sold it on. One of those decisions you instantly regret. I had forgotten just how good it sounds until now.
I thought of selling mine last year but I'm so glad I didn't.
The first primal scream album all used a 12 string would be nice to see some of that
Great songs. I play guitar, thought there was more than one person playing! Thanks.
Well, thank _you._
The Backing tracks have some extra guitar parts (acoustics, six strings, etc) so sometimes there is more than one. _Do I Wanna Know_ is double tracked with a 6-String, because AFAICT that's how it's done on the record.
Great talent you have !
Fantastic! Under The Milky Way was my favourite, but this was all very instructive. Thanks
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it.
