I don't know about that. I'm currently remodeling a house and had some brick that needed painted and I went with a black that I have used on many different things and loved it. I am now on my fourth color and I'm finally happy with it. Obviously, each space is different but even though that is a large room the fireplace is huge and the black may very well overwhelm the space. That my thoughts with experience with black on brick.

I literally just painted my shop in Redmond SW Iron Ore. Although mine looks a bit darker in daylight. My exterior was rough sawn pine so primed it with a tinted oil based primer before the iron ore superpaint.
It sounds simple and logical, but what I really like at your reno is that you kept all walls through-out the house the same off-white color. Many people pick a different color for every room. Couple of years back, with our gut-to-the-studs reno, we did the same as you did, but picking the right color isn't easy :). Five years later here a strong piece of advice: If you're really happy with the color, stock up gallons and gallons of the same paint and color. Yep, paint is expensive today, but another thousand bucks is peanuts compared to your total project costs. As an illustration, here is what can go wrong. We (in Canada) settled ten years ago on Pratt & Lambert "Chinese White". Year later the first hurdle: P&L decided to leave the Canadian market, so suddenly we had to switch to Benjamin Moore. And they told us their computers could match any P&L color -- which of course they couldn't, but couple of try-out gallons and many dollars later we had a decent BM match that we liked. Then more recent, they decided to change the base (resin) of the paint. But the colors would remain the same ... Not so, it changed from some "ivory" look into something more "pinkish". You don't see that on a small sample, but you really do after painting a whole wall, which then doesn't fully match the rest of the room. Long story short, luckily we're planning no major repaint jobs anymore, our house is now done. But don't trust those paint guys, they're only focussed on profits and share-holders. This sounds like a bitching-and-complaining story, but we made on this front also a lot of the right moves. At the time we stocked up (many gallons) on oil-based paint (in various colours, but the majority plain white) just before it became clear that would out-ruled soon. And we're using them now. ALL IN ALL -- WHEN YOU FIND THE RIGHT PAINT AND COLOR, STOCK UP AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AFFORD. IT WILL REDUCE A LOT OF STRESS IN THE COMING YEARS ....
Hello Jason, I was thinking about your stair dilemma, I designed and built homes for 40 years and thought I'd offer another way to think about the problem. I fully understand the desire to walk in the entry, see through it to the views beyond. However, since that seems difficult to achieve you might want to rethink the objectives. Instead of views beyond the stairs upon entry, make the stairs the focal point, make them the Wow Factor, make them special onto themselves and make the views beyond a second Wow Factor once you get past the stairs. In that way you maximize the impact to the person entering your home and that is the goal. Since you mentioned some metal work from the balcony, I have a photo of a stair case I built a few years ago that I think would give you some ideas. I don't think I can post a picture here, so I will PM you on your Facebook page should you care to see those stairs. Good Luck, always enjoy your videos.....
As long as you are going all out on the house. Why not look at Sub-Zero Wolf Cove appliances for the kitchen and beverage center? They are built in and look amazing. It will take your kitchen to the next level.
Glad to see you pull out the BT. While I do appreciate and enjoy the woodworking, about 22 minutes into this video I started to feel you've been neglecting the bourbon lately, then, voila! Well done.
That is going to be a beautiful home. Renovating a house, where you can be there every day is a pain.... hours away has to be a nightmare, but what a great job. Thanks for the peak, and a lot of ideas.
We used durogrit on our patio furniture it looks great and holds up great! Application took a bit of learning it doesn’t go on line Rubio monocoat per se but we love how it looks and it is durable for sure!
I agree with you on the pocket door handles. I install hardware in new houses and I hate that type of handle, plus they are cheaply made and break easy. Great call on the upgrade.
How about Plexiglass for the stairs with metal risers to hold them. You could always install carpet on the steps. Kinda a floating look to them and structurally strong? Just a thought? Keep up with the great content!!
DIY here so I’m probably wrong but if they’re using something like a schluter system like KERDI I believe you can use drywall in the shower. It can be expensive but might be cheaper and easier than ripping out drywall and installing hardi board or something
Haha 9:33... the plate rail... A big "nope" for me after I considered it. Think about it... one huge dust catcher up at eye level. I did wainscoting in my bath and dining rooms only, just to add some interest to the boring walls, with a simple small cap.
I wish they would resist the urge to make everything “farmhouse” - it’s a cool 70s modern and I think they should lean into that a bit more and less of the 2015 trends
my 2¢: I know it is the norm to make everything in every room the same - ie: baseboards ALL THE SAME, etc, etc....... but that bores me. I'd vary the height, and perhaps not do every room.
Beautiful home, congratulations. Love most of the choices. I’m not sure about the stove/kitchen sink placement though. Someone’s going to really like cleaning that window behind the stove.
In a previous video he mentioned that it wouldn’t work because there was no good way to keep the pipes from freezing since it’s against an exterior wall.
Stairs, steel rail attaches to the wall, steel stair tread supports, stair treads, wood to match the floor or some kind of grid metal(?), 1/2" tempered glass on the side (where the balusters would be) with a handrail top, no balusters needed
@ 22:36 Elephant in room, explain to novices that all those blue painter tape pieces on walls are where you noticed paint or drywall needs to be touched up/ or repaired !!!

Maybe your buddy would come down and help build one.
Your door swing from the garage into the mud /laundry room is backwards You have to walk around the door past the washer/dryer instead of walk to the bench directly
I dont know how property values run in Oregon, but living in the Midwest, it blows my mind that you can put that amount of time and money into the house and not be severely upside down on it. I wish you the best of luck. Keep up the great work. We all love your videos.
He gets a bunch of the material for free and can make up a lot of expenses by treating this as YT-content(which it is). That changes the math considerably
Pretty fancy for a Airbnb. After a few years of tenants if you decide to move in there you’ll have to remodel again. Yes people are to sensitive MASTER bedroom is fine!
I've worked on a number of homes that were getting pocket doors and not once did any come with a chunk cut out of it like that. The only way it came like that was if you asked for it when buying it. I'd change the color of the fireplace bricks. Everything white is not great to begin with but white there is just gonna be a hassle especially as the years go by and it gets stained from all the fires. Something darker and contrasting with literally everything else that's white will look so much better.
In the kids bedrrom . . . 4 beds? Good idea. Make four twin murphy beds. When a bed isnt being used it can be folded up and is then a good looking cabinet. Create-a-bed has a super great deluxe adjustable kit that is really solid. And they provide plans with their kits.

@16:23 Go for it, I agree we should giving de-sensitivity training vs the other way around. Not saying we should offend on purpose, but the amount some people find offence in everything has gotten out of hand.
Who’s really being “too sensitive” here though? Is it the people asking someone to be aware/respectful or is it the grown man who feels the need to make petty remarks instead of accepting a mistake and changing use of a singular word in his vocabulary? 🤦🏽♂️
Whoever complained about you using the term “master bedroom” needs to get a life. You shouldn’t let them dictate your use of language. Great video as always!
Regarding the kitchen: 1. Kitchens never have enough outlets They should be grounf fault outlets. 2. There is plenty of room to make seating at the island on the living room side.
Great video! Btw - thank you for addressing the references to the "big bedroom"! I recently had that discussion with my wife when I wasn't politically correct with my terminology...
I thought the appeal of the small shop was to show how to build things with limited space (like the rest of us do). I get that logistically building the cabinets closer makes more sense.. But you phrased it as if still having your old shop would have been fine but the garage shop was too small...
@Bourbonmoth enjoy watching, thank you for your content it gives me enough confidence to at least try. You may need to get your electrician replace that outlet in the laundry room above the sink to a GFCI outlet.
Not a fan of textured walls or HOA but they seem to be common in the US. Here in Canada our walls are smooth and we don’t have HOA’s so we can paint whatever colour we like 😊
I love everything EXCEPT the plate rail idea. I know its a cabin in the woods, but it looks modern on the inside. Adding the plate rail is just a little too "country bumpkin" to me. Oh, and I agree with the other comments, paint the fireplace black!
On the exposed conduit, if you have to and you hate the look of round conduit, there is square cable raceway that you can run NM-B and tray cable through. Check the product for its code listings. Absolutely not all of it is rated for that use (especially in the isles where you’ll find square raceway for hiding an appliance cable) but an electrician can handle that for you for sure. It’s just not the default option since it’s three times as expensive.
Wood slab on Industrial Steel Stairs... just a thought if your going with the steel rails upstairs. It'll tie in with the Wood slab Mantle in the main room.
Great update. Just a few questions: 1) What are you going to do with the concrete slab front porch? It's doesn't really go with the grey pavers, IMO 2) Are you going to put a storm door in front of the front door? Just curious Master bedroom!! Yes!| Buffalo Trace! Yay!!!
To make the rooms brighter... Ceiling should be dead flat white and tint the walls to not be 100% white, so when the trim is painted you can see the wall is a different color! Otherwise, you get the hospital everything is white feel for the house!
Starting to look really good!!! Love the outside 'iron ore' colour. Will be looking out for your next episode in this build and your 'so called' small shop, which for me is big!!!
My wife and I say your kitchen design is wrong. You need to switch the stove/oven with the sink. Much better to look out the window while cleaning dishes. Also you should have some sort of range hood over the stove area. Love your content keep up the good work.
21:45 That steel railing could integrate with an epic twirly slide, just saying. Especially for a short term rental it would be a point of attraction, not to mention how much the Foreman would approve of something so awesome. 🤷♀️🤩
Yes, and I know plenty of women who definitely "wear the trousers" so either way it's appropriate. I'm a woman who lives alone in a one bedroom property, so it's just referred to as "the bedroom". If I had a second bedroom then the biggest of the two would still probably be referred to as the Master. Not quite sure what the fuss is about.
@@NothingByHalves The fuss is the word "master" falling out of favor in *some* contexts and people taking it to extreme to try to eliminate it from the lexicon completely. Wait till they find out that USB is a common architecture of electronic communication called "master and slave".
@@needamuffinThey won’t need to wait. I work in tech and devs and other tech folks switched out terms like “master branch” for “main branch” and others at least a few years ago.

don't agree completely............. texture makes it look better, look classier - more expensive (since IS much more expensive!). .. maybe Jason can showcase better when next there w/ camera? do agree, though, that if he is going to put up 'plate rails' then did NOT need to pay extra for the textre on lower 2/3s of his walls.

The HOA I dealt with in FL before moving to the PNW was a nightmare! It was a regular committee of Karens!
Karens usually take over HOAs.
I highly doubt he's going to be paying extra money to have the contractor fix their mistake.
I know you probably already built all the cabnets but please build one in the small shop. I have a small shop and need to build my kitchen cabnets soon...
This is quite changed since last I visited your channel. It looks wonderful, love the house color, its perfect for out there... I'm quite familiar w/that part of Oregon. My sister lives in Redmond, 2 cousins in Bend, one in LaPine...I've visited often from Hood River
Re: stairs... you've probably seen Black Tail workshop's terrific new mono. Maybe your buddy would come down and help build one.
Your door swing from the garage into the mud /laundry room is backwards
You have to walk around the door past the washer/dryer instead of walk to the bench directly
Ill tell you what, thats going to be the best Master Bedroom, the greatestz there won't ever be a better Master Bedroom.
I dont know how property values run in Oregon, but living in the Midwest, it blows my mind that you can put that amount of time and money into the house and not be severely upside down on it. I wish you the best of luck. Keep up the great work. We all love your videos.
I used to live in Oregon, where he is the house is probably in the lower 50%ile of the market. Bend home prices are VERY high.
It's a million plus after reno. His purchase was nearly 900K
Master bedroom is the correct way to say it 👍 lol
Only if you owned a plantation.
@@jmbisme Sorry, the term has nothing to do with plantations. It originated in mid-20th century to sound "fancy".
@@jmbisme Quit being so soft and sensitive. You’re what’s wrong with today’s world.
Way to be a staunch ally to your son. I guess it's progress considering you're a golfer.
Agree with Jonny Boy. All the pocket doors I've installed came as solid slabs, no notches. Think you fucked that one up, Bourbon (hiccup) Moth!
Staircase glass with a thin metal rail with either wire or glass sides to prevent falling off. Downside lots of cleaning.
Please use another camera setting next time. The in/out of focus is very distracting from your great work!
In the kids bedrrom . . . 4 beds? Good idea. Make four twin murphy beds. When a bed isnt being used it can be folded up and is then a good looking cabinet. Create-a-bed has a super great deluxe adjustable kit that is really solid. And they provide plans with their kits.
I think from his last update video, he said he has plans for 1 set of twin bunk beds and two more single twin beds in the nook.😊
@@scottjacoby2594. Just offering ideas that could be a pleasant alternative . . . I am sure that he has made many changes to his original plans as he is presented with new ideas. 😊
Tell your wife about crown molding. Add that to your trim package. :) She'll like that too, I'm certain of that.
Jason, love the master bedroom
You can’t say that! 😂
@@jacobschweitzer2954 for good reason
@ I did say and I stand by the statement. If sensitivities were upset…so what, move on.
Regarding the kitchen: 1. Kitchens never have enough outlets
They should be grounf fault outlets. 2. There is plenty of room to make seating at the island on the living room side.
The flooring people are going to love you for calling them lazy woosies.😂
Great video! Btw - thank you for addressing the references to the "big bedroom"! I recently had that discussion with my wife when I wasn't politically correct with my terminology...
'Cabin'? House, Mansion, Compound - it is amazing, but not your typical cabin
WHEN YOU GET TO DRY-WALL PHAZE, YOU'RE ABOUT 1/2-WAY DONE...
I just have to say you make many of my Saturday mornings enjoyable!! Keep doing what you're doing!🤙🤙
on the open side of the stairwell one could do a wall made of glass..maybe lit from to bottom and/or the top
I thought the appeal of the small shop was to show how to build things with limited space (like the rest of us do). I get that logistically building the cabinets closer makes more sense.. But you phrased it as if still having your old shop would have been fine but the garage shop was too small...
You’re rockin that plaid this morning. The house is looking amazing.
@Bourbonmoth enjoy watching, thank you for your content it gives me enough confidence to at least try. You may need to get your electrician replace that outlet in the laundry room above the sink to a GFCI outlet.
Likely has a gfci breaker for the room
Not a fan of textured walls or HOA but they seem to be common in the US. Here in Canada our walls are smooth and we don’t have HOA’s so we can paint whatever colour we like 😊
One of my first requirements when we first started looking at houses was NO HOA NEIGHBORHOOD.
One of my first requirements when we first started looking at houses was NO HOA NEIGHBORHOOD.
I have one popcorn wall and all popcorn ceilings. I hate them with a passion.
I love everything EXCEPT the plate rail idea. I know its a cabin in the woods, but it looks modern on the inside. Adding the plate rail is just a little too "country bumpkin" to me. Oh, and I agree with the other comments, paint the fireplace black!
6:43 Pfft, I built my custom kitchen in my living room 😂
I see you were visited by the blue tape fairy. Every contractor loves to walk in to that. It gives us the warm fuzzies.
Did someone run around spiking the drywall!? So many tape flags!
i was about to ask what is the reason behind the blue tape?
On the exposed conduit, if you have to and you hate the look of round conduit, there is square cable raceway that you can run NM-B and tray cable through. Check the product for its code listings. Absolutely not all of it is rated for that use (especially in the isles where you’ll find square raceway for hiding an appliance cable) but an electrician can handle that for you for sure. It’s just not the default option since it’s three times as expensive.
Wood slab on Industrial Steel Stairs... just a thought if your going with the steel rails upstairs. It'll tie in with the Wood slab Mantle in the main room.
Wow, what an improvement. The pavers and the roof over the entry door looks awesome.
Great update. Just a few questions:
1) What are you going to do with the concrete slab front porch? It's doesn't really go with the grey pavers, IMO
2) Are you going to put a storm door in front of the front door? Just curious
Master bedroom!! Yes!|
Buffalo Trace! Yay!!!
Commendable high quality work! However I would recommend hiring a good interior designer. I think they will make a huge difference.
So it's gray, white, and black. Color me shocked. 😉
To make the rooms brighter... Ceiling should be dead flat white and tint the walls to not be 100% white, so when the trim is painted you can see the wall is a different color!
Otherwise, you get the hospital everything is white feel for the house!
Paint everything same color...save on tape, masking paper, and other colors! Great thinking for a rental!
How cool would it be to have a patreon party at this cabin next year.
Master bedroom. Bedroom for the Master of the house. If it’s your house, you are the master of the house. Seems fine to me.
Master = Leader
Politically Correct = saying what you are told to say to avoid being punished by political powers, ie: a slave
@@NothingByHalvesThe historically negative connotation of “master” isn’t about men and women and whether the latter “wears the trousers.”
@@needamuffinThey won’t need to wait. I work in tech and devs and other tech folks switched out terms like “master branch” for “main branch” and others at least a few years ago.
Don’t do the counter depth frig! I HATE ours! You don’t think you’re loosing that much space but you really do. Then you’re stuck with it.
As a DIY homeowner with multiple projects planned having overlapping needs, the end of this video was way too real.
It’s only just begun !
Cheers from Aus
biggest mistake of this project is getting rid of bathroom on upper level...hands down
bathroom is still there, just the shower is gone. Kids don't shower anyway.
The place looks great. I don’t like the color tones but I do like the rock garden with waterfall.
We had a pocket door for the bathroom. It had the first hardware that you mentioned. It never really locked. I'm glad they updated it.
My Brother's new house has this pocket door latch from Hell. I hate them.
Your punchlist looks a lot like mine, I'm also having a bourbon!
Jason you should do a floating stair case with glass panels as your hand rail that would look sharp
That hand trowel wall texture just looks like a bad plastering job.
Not for nothing, that handle of Buffalo Trace ain't going to be enough. You best get yourself another, 'cause you've yet to see the final inspection for occupancy.
Absolutely delightful! You and your family will really enjoy the cabin.
Fresh drywall and putting a texture on the walls is diabolical
don't agree completely............. texture makes it look better, look classier - more expensive (since IS much more expensive!). .. maybe Jason can showcase better when next there w/ camera? do agree, though, that if he is going to put up 'plate rails' then did NOT need to pay extra for the textre on lower 2/3s of his walls.
Been following for awhile and subscribed, just received my Bourbon blade. Very well made if I were to change anything it would be to have the blade edged on all sides, not just the right side and tip. I’ve used the blade a few times now and find I’m flipping it over when using my left hand. As for your staircase please check out Pneumatic Attic floating staircase, I believe that’s the ticket for the Reno property. Can’t wait for the cabinets to be built! Cheers
