Hornby Pug - Improvements, Modifications and Mistakes made along the way

  • This video shows "How to" improve the appearance and running qualities of the basic Hornby ex Caledonian Railways 0-4-0 Pug. It is rather longer than my usual videos and it was filmed over a number of weeks as I made modifications to the model. I have left in the problems I encountered and mistakes I made along the way ....but I got there in the end and I think a good looking loco eventually resulted.

    Great stuff Keith. Your detailing is superb. I tinkered with my Pug and didn't even attempt to fit the fiddly handrails. As for improving the running, I sourced an old 3-plank wagon (with metal-tyred wheels) on eBay and converted it into a pick-up tender using the kit you have from Eileen's. It's wired via a connector to the Pug to give it another 2 pick-ups on each side and no more stalling! I understand that these informal tenders existed in the prototypical world. Cheers!

      Thanks Andrew, your comments are much appreciated. I had intended to add a 3 plank wagon in the way you describe but so far have been unable to source a metal tyred one on Ebay. What make is yours? Regards Keith

      @@KV12543 Hi Keith, I have of course covered the brand with the pick up strips, but I seem to recall it’s an old Dapol. I’ll leave another reply to the topic I posted on RM Web, just in case RUclips ‘moderates’ the comment with a web link in it.

    Hello from the East Riding of Yorkshire. Just watched your excellent video about your 040 pug locomotive. You have made an amazing excellent job of weathering the pug. Well done sir, and I also watched your video about fitting seats, passengers and lightning to the Hornby four wheel coaches. You have done another amazing transformation.       Thanks Martin, its always good to receive comments like yours. Since this modification I have also added extra pickups by adding a small coal truck which the prototypes also had...this improves the slow running no end and now there are no hesitations over my dead frog points, Regards Keith

    You should be Well Pleased with your Efforts, turning a Bland Little Toy into a Good Looking little Shunter.
    I have not seen the Coal piled up in front of the Cab like that before. Great little touch.
    I can only just remember Steam in my Youth. (back in the Old Country.)
    And was too young to take in Such Details.
    But can Imagine the Crew getting as much Coal on Board as Possible, to save some time through the Day..!
    Time Saved for an Extra Tea Break at some point..!

      They also ran with small coal wagons behind them so they could travel further. I have built one since this video by converting a Hornby shunters truck. Needless to say there is a video.....Regards Keith

    A good looking detailed model, enjoyed watching this video which was very encouraging for my own plans for the few loco s I have in store, one for detailing, with the others for making a ex LNER, ex LSWR and similar industrials, thank you!

    Yep.. I enjoy these cheap & cheeky engines, ideal for improving weathering and painting skills & they look really great pulling branch line mixed freight trains with 4 wheel or clerestory coaches. Yes!, I always look for examples with the handrails intact 😜 Nice Vid, thanks for leaving in the “out takes” 😂👍🏻

    Hi Keith - That was absolutely fascinating as always and what a cracking finished look to your pug, no wonder your very pleased with yourself.
    Out of curiosity are you aware of any N Gauge steam locomotive shunters that worked in the Bognor Regis area that are out there as I dont seem to be able to find any. This would be for Era 3, 4 and 5. I think I will have to wait till some kind soul decides to produce one methinks.

      Thanks Chris for your comments, they are much appreciated. The Guildford shed pilot in the 1930's was a very short wheelbase saddle tank much like a shorter version of my pug but as far as I am aware no models of it exist in either 00 or N gauge, Regards Keith

    You've done a fantastic job again. May I suggest snipping off the securing clips to finish off the look . Otherwise it's spot on

    Beautiful! sadly i have the centenary version but might look for a cheap second hand one to do something like this as well as make a tender also i believe this model also comes from a LNER Y9

    You should be pleased with yourself! great work, you are getting very good at this weathering lark. Please tell me more about liquid lead, not heard of it. I use fishing lead shot to add weight to the front of planes.

      Hi Max, as you can see from the video, fluid lead is much smaller than fishing shot lead so can get into much smaller spaces. A possible word of warning though - one of my viewers said that you should not glue it in with PVA as it can expand and split the plastic of the model. However, the instructions that came with it said you should use PVA so at present I am a little confused. Thanks for your comments, this time the weathering actually came out as I intended!     Yes that Pug looks great. I renumbered mine as I believe the Hornby number is incorrect for a Caley Pug, 51200 is in the sequence for an L and Y Pug. I renumbered mine 56032,

      Thanks for your comments ...you are quite correct regarding the numbering sequence, the ex Caley tanks were indeed in the 56000 series in BR days but I had missed that when researching the locos.....I don't think I will bother renumbering it now though as the new number might not too good now the loco is weathered, Regards Keith

      @@KV12543 but hey you did a grand job on your Pug. I'll leave mine alone as its a sweet runner, much better than the old Smokey Joe I bought for my son..taking loco bodies off to service them seems to be a mugs game these days!

    I found it funny when you said you were unsure of if it was still in the range or not. Smokey Joe's been going 37 years strong in Hornby's range.

      I was referring to the BR version with the early totems as on my model. Starting with Smokey Joe I would have had to repaint and then apply transfers - even more work! Regards Keith

    You should NOT use PVA and lead shot this will react and expand splitting the body.

      That's interesting....the instructions that come with the fluid lead say use a mix of 3 parts PVA to one of water plus a drop of washing up liquid - no mention of splitting the body. I hope it doesn't cause any problems as I have added Fluid lead this way into a number of my models over the last few months, Regards Keith

    Why not add a small capacitor to the engine so it won't stall over points?

      Electrics are not my strong point but I think the problem of stalling lies more with my very old uneven track, Regards Keith

    A good job but sadly spolit by the gross Hornby tension lock couplings.

    Got to be carefull adding wieght to the front as this can lift the rear driver and loss pulling pwer.

      Agreed Darren, I did balance the loco roughly in my hand and it seemed OK and as you can see , the loco quite happily still pulls at least 4 wagons, and round my sharp curves. I don't need it to pull long trains so it will do for me, Regards Keith

    Use a pin to put super glue on.

      Great tip....The problem I had was that the handrail knobs are so small I was finding it difficult to hold them in my pliers without them flying off and ending up on my carpet never to be seen again. I threaded them onto the handrail wire first and then tried to glue them into the holes on the saddle tank....not my best idea. Wet and dry followed by weathering has luckliy covered up most of my mistakes, Regards Keith
