hello all. Pepsi’s pet parent here. here’s a little backstory on our kitty. previous to this groom Pepsi has been going to the vet for sedation grooms due to her spiceyness. as she is now pushing 12 years old we don’t feel comfortable doing that anymore. when pepsi was a kitten she got into a plant and ended up getting super sick. she was constipated and had to have surgery. since that occurred she has ALWAYS been sensitive around her bum. she lets us brush and comb her up until we reach her backend. then it’s game over. it’s not that we’re scared to touch her, it’s that we can’t and don’t want to break the routine we have going. I booked this appointment hoping to have her bum shaved in case there was matting or to prevent it. since Vanessa was unsuccessful (although got more nails done then I could ever lol) we will have to figure something else out and discuss options with our vet. I appreciate Vanessa trying as I know Pepsi is problematic 😂 so thank you again Vanessa for dealing with our grumpy old lady ❤❤

I have a cat who is still weird about the positioning of her food bowl due to be shocked, scared and splashed with a dropped cup of tea in the kitchen when she was younger. So, I sympathise. Experienced rescue cat mom here. To deal with this level of feisty the cat needs to be burritoed in a huge blanket. I typically sit on the floor with really thick jeans and thick towel over my lap. That way I can use my legs as extra arms. Then take one paw out at a time.
I still have to do this with my sweet former feral kitten Maybel.
Maybel comes when she's called, and wakes me up to pet her ... but claw clipping is where her sassy comes out. Took over five years until she wasn't pissed and hissing at me for the rest of the day.
Luckily she's short haired and the cleanest cat I've ever had so she's never needed a bath.
Had a strong ginger Main Coon cross rescue "Azzy" that unfortunately needed semi-regular baths because he had poop issues (poor boy was kicked as a kitten by an evil person, which led to constipation issues). He had fishhook shaped claws. Burrito technique also works in the bath. Highly recommend a non-slip bath mat!

Thick jean fabric is definitely the way to go for protective clothing against cats. Even thinner, stretchy jeans will hold up well against the claws. I had to wrestle a big, half-feral cat into a cage a while ago and my jean jacket has a bit more character now, but I didn't even get a scratch.

My childhood cat, a long-haired, part Persian Calico (beautiful but deadly) absolutely did not want to be trimmed, but also didn't like to be combed, so the mats built up to the point that my parents had to cut them off. They took her to the basement wearing heavy gardening gloves and heavy long sleeves and managed to cut off the hair mats, but you'd have thought they were torturing her to do it. I have never since heard sounds like that come from any other animal. It's a good thing the neighbors couldn't hear it, they would have called the authorities on us.

The vet put a warning on the file for one of my cats. The vet used heavy suede gloves that went up to the elbow. When the cat got diabetes and periodically had to spend the day at the vet getting blood tests, he gave up even trying to take my cat from the built-in cages to my crate.
My cat would be so mad it looked like his eyes were whirling in circles. That shocked me. But I just waited until he responded to the sound of my voice & double-checked that my finger smelled right and out he would calmly come, climbing into my arms. I really got a laugh when he turned his head and hissed at the vet. He's gone to that big cat playground in the sky (where there aren't any vets 😉), but I still remember him fondly.

My heart-cat (my first cat after I moved away from home, and the one I still miss terribly more than 15 years after his passing) had "BITES" on his file at his first vet. Since Sammy had never been a biter at home (never did more than hiss or swat a little at visitors he didn't like up to that point, although he did fight other cats when he managed to escape my apartment), I was more than a bit surprised. Then I found out that the (brand new) vet tech had -- with zero warning -- just reached into his carrier and hauled him out backwards. He bit her right through the very, very thin leather gloves she was wearing. All I could think was, "Well, DUH!! You probably smelled of other scared animals, and you pulled a stupid maneuver." I suggested that perhaps thicker gloves and/or NOT dragging them out backwards would be a good start for meeting new cats (or, y'know, sticking to dogs since she obviously wasn't a cat person).
Sammy's next vet was a bit smarter. We warned him that Sammy'd had a bit of a traumatic experience with that vet tech, so when Sammy refused to walk out his carrier, New Vet simply detached the lid and started working. Sammy was a bit surprised, but then decided he liked this guy (until the blood draw, anyway). This vet also let me or hubby come in the back with Sammy so we could help calm him.

Don't feel bad, some cats are just like that. We had an amazing groomer (who only does cats), she was the ultimate cat-whisperer. One of our cats (RIP) used to throw her for a loop thanks to being incredibly wily and also being one of those cats who would go from being the sweetest old lady to being a psycho without much warning. The groomer could work on the cat for up to five minutes at a time, which would be followed by about fifteen minutes for the cat to calm down, and then she'd get another few minutes of effort in before having to have another break. If it hadn't been for health issues in the cat's old age, we'd never have put the cat (or the groomer) through it. That cat was also notorious for terrorizing vet techs. Again, sweetest tiny cat until she really didn't like a situation, then she'd lose her shit and go for blood. People who didn't take the warnings seriously ended up regretting it.

My cat is like that. He's an absolute ball of love and affection...until you start touching him in ways he doesn't like. I know some cats are just wired that way, but he also had a rough first 2 years from what the shelter told me, which I'm sure didn't help things. I think he learned that the only way he could stop treatment/touching he didn't care for was to go for blood. It took several months after I got him for him to realize regular petting wasn't going to suddenly change into paw touching/tail pulling.

I'm sure my extremely docile cat would have acted the same way. When she had to be hospitalized for a few days, I was surprised when her Vet called me and said I had to pick her up 2 days earlier than planned because she was too aggressive. I was stunned: I had never heard anyone call her aggressive as she was such a sweetheart. I soon learned over multiple times in the hospital that she wasn't particularly welcome, though they did take good care of her. Students from the high school would come in and pick her up and brush her and tidy her up which mystified the staff. I had to eventually have her PTS when she was in total renal failure and had severe liver issues. The hardest day of my life. The sedation she was given before putting her to sleep worked the opposite and she flew out of my arms and ran around the room like she was possessed. When the vet finally grabbed her, he couldn't even place her on my lap because she was so agitated. She passed without me holding her. I then went home and took my dishes out of the cupboard and smashed them on the floor. I was inconsolable for weeks. 5 days before her 15th birthday 😢
