    Great video, thanks. My recommendation for new players is to fumble your way through a first game and accept that mistakes will be made. Then come to these tutorials where everything said makes perfect sense as you can relate it to that first practice game.

    Civ does slingers dirty. They were an elite unit on the ancient battlefield. Seriously read up on it, they were devastating. Goliath was the underdog, not David.

    Thank you so much for your videos/tutorial. You do an excellent job. With that being said, I find Civilization to be an extremely difficult/steep learning curve for newbies. The developers need to really focus on a much more in depth/hands on tutorial. I’ve found myself going halfway through the game then giving up due to: what should I build/where should I build it, should I go to war/or not, how do I win this?, and just overall frustration on what to do. It’s a beautiful and extremely detailed game, but it’s far too arduous and time consuming for a casual gamer. I had to give it up and walk away from the game as a result of exhaustion and simply not having fun.

      That's a problem with strategy games in general. In my experience, the Civilization games are some of the simplest. Grand strategy games, e.g., most Paradox games, leave me scratching my head.

    I bought the game because it was $3 on a Steam sale. It was interesting to me and BOY could it burn some time away. I swear the clock moves 10x as fast when I'm playing. That said, the game does NOT explain much of anything very well and this and the first video has helped immensely and taught me things I never even knew just from experimenting. That said, I have dominated every game I've played in the War category. Now though, I may actually win in other ways. Although my first and only true win to date was actually a Science win. Go figure. Time to get the rest.

    While it helps to discuss decisions you're making on the fly, there is no talk of mechanics. For example, you discuss invading a city without explaining how that works. Do defenders get a buff being in a city, is it like CIV III where an unprotected city can be walked into and taken, does a city always fight back even with no military units, given all that how do city sieges typically work (e.g. how many of what unit types do you typically need and does it change by era when walls start coming up or whatever else [hard for me to describe as city battle mechanics are a blind spot for me having only played 1 game of Civilization 6 with very little war so far partly due to my ignorance of the mechanics). Do trade routes accrue their benefit in both cities, does it only apply to one city, does it apply per turn or only when they get there? What are city states and envoys? Do these states side with certain civilizations and how does that work?
    Or in this video and the second, I have very little idea of how districts work. Do you want an even mixture of all districts in every city, do you play it by ear based on which districts do best in a city perhaps not even getting others or do you always get all districts, what happens to the resources of a tile when you build a district, do you always build districts or are there cases where whatever happens to a tile means you should sometimes prefer that tile over a district? I can intuit you might focus more heavily on certain districts based on your goals, but I have no bearing on whether you'd like to get every district to some capacity to have a functioning city or how to decide whether to change the tile by building one however it changes it. As another example, when you discussed that mountains give +1 to science being near a campus, it would have been educational to mention all the other benefits of all the other districts as that was a point to neatly package all that information.
    The tutorial is better than nothing and better than the awful in-game tutorial that taught about nothing at all, but I'd recommend more summaries of mechanics with a little deeper discussion at points in the dialogue. My guess is you either thought it would overwhelm or perhaps you overlooked these opportunities, taking for granted your seasoned expertise with the game. When a person joins a new coding team, it's quite beneficial for them to critique the onboarding process since it's for them... new eyes... and stuff can be taken for granted, so this is a common problem in pedagogy.

      Many of the things you requested here are covered in part 3 I believe. As far as talk about strategy I do have other tutorials that go more in depth, but I wanted this Basics series to stick to just facts about the functionality of the game.

    As someone who barely started, should I play with vanilla, Rise and Fall, or Gathering Storm rules?

    • @Normul8or
      @Normul8or  4 года назад +2

      My suggestion would be to try at least a couple games under vanilla to understand where the game started so you can appreciate everything that the expansions provide. Rise & Fall was a tremendous expansion and took the game to a whole new level, so you may want to consider playing some games under that rule set as well before jumping to the full game at Gathering Storm rules. Hope this helps.

      Early on battering ram works fine with melee units. If you’re bringing cavalry class units then you’ll need catapult/trebuchet/bombard depending on the era you are in. Getting a general to go with those units is important otherwise they can’t move and shoot in the same turn and it really slows you down.

      Sorry if it was unclear. The food and production benefits indicated go to the origin city only.

    Should you manage how many pops your city can have? I've gotten to the point in my game where I simply don't have the amenities to make my larger cities happy. Granted this is my first game. So in sure I'm doing something wrong as well. But still seems like a good thing to ask.

    • @Normul8or
      @Normul8or  3 года назад

      There is definitely a point where cities can grow much bigger than you actually need. If I want to limit my pop in cities than you can control that by not providing extra housing and then the food takes such a penalty that a city takes forever to grow.

    I just go this game. Should I buy any expansion at all? Or learn the game first?

    • @Normul8or
      @Normul8or  3 года назад

      I always suggest trying out the game a few times to learn it in its original state, if for no other reason then to appreciate where it came from. That being said, the expansions add a great deal to the game and change a lot, so there will be lots to learn if and when you do pick up additional content. As far as what to buy, Rise & Fall was the best expansion by far but Gathering Storm is now the better purchase since you get all the functionality and features from Rise & Fall when you purchase Gathering Storm. The only thing you don't get is the 9 new Civs that come with R&F along with some Wonders. Gathering Storm does however come with its own set of 9 new leaders to choose from.
      BTW, the expansions are currently 50% off on Steam if you're thinking about pulling the trigger.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @Normul8or
      @Normul8or  3 года назад +1

      @@Mehwhatevr It really depends on the player and what they want to accomplish for a particular game. Early on when you're getting started it might be a good idea to choose a Civ that is particularly good at something and gear your win condition towards that. For myself I always had a victory condition in mind from the start as I wanted to know an exact direction to target in order to win as fast as possible, because the turn timer was always my measure of success. For others they may just want to chill and play the game and see what comes to them. One thing you'll find is that if you do up the difficulty level you're gonna need to be more focused on victory a little more as things become more challenging.

    • @Normul8or

      If you’re looking for things to be easy then islands is nice, less hostility. Other option is to reduce the number of opposing Civs so you have room to play. If you’re looking for a tougher test then continents will tend to have the tightest spawns. Perhaps choose your opponents and pick war Civs. Just some thoughts.

      The most important thing about beating deity is grinding out the details. Decisions matter a lot more. Getting early culture up is big, always putting in the right government cards in is crucial to get the right bonuses at the right time. Also, getting early production and momentum is key to start the snowball with your core cities. Lots of feudalism builders as quick as possible to get your cities going strong for mid game districts and buildings.
