Great list! Just a quick note on *why* Auto Unit Cycler is annoying: 1) It gives you no time to observe the effect of your actions. Say, you attack a barbarian with a warrior, but with AUC enabled, you're immediately taken to, say, your scout and have no idea what the damage was. It's far better to only cycle manually when you're ready ("Enter" by default; I remap to "X"). 2) The cycling is pretty much random (even if AUC is off). Say, you're attacking a city with multiple units -- there's no guarantee that, following an action of one of your troops, the AUC will cycle within that group: you can be taken back and forth. It's better to manually click on the units in a group in a meaningful order (in this case, the attacking units), then cycle through the rest (civilian units, reinforcements, etc.).
Also, as I know, unlike ruins from civ5, villages don't have any windows saying "You got something something from there". So I found AUC really annoying in early game
In my first hours of playing, I also accidentally moved units to random tiles often, because I was aiming for a next unit but got taken to a next unit automatically and just clicked on an empty tile for the unit to move to.

I've been playing Civ 6 for two years now, and it seems like I still haven't learned all there is to learn. The ribbon is completely new to me, and that looks really, really useful. I also never really thought about switching off food production when I'm at my housing limit, but now that you mention it... well, duh! Makes perfect sense. I confess that I often don't micromanage my population unless I'm trying to put a rush on something, but I'll try to use my population more efficiently next game. I did know about siphoning funds being the best mission to send an idle spy on. Helps that the mission naturally has a much higher chance of success than anything else.
Phlebas The trick is balancing the micromanagement with fun. Namely, not forgetting to set food back once housing is solved. Setting down pins to remind yourself of stuff like this can be very helpful. Early game is where micromanaging workers is most influential. Manually striking a balance between growth (top priority, perhaps) and production (slightly lower, but still high priority, perhaps) can make a significant difference. Otherwise using “focus on” food and production on every city is usually a good bet. Just add it to the things you’re considering when teching: sewers and neighborhoods. Also barracks/stables and lighthouses. Even aqueducts/dams/canals, particularly in plans to synergize with industrial zones. But the easiest thing is to use farms/pastures/plantations/fishing-boats and unique tile improvements or buildings from your civilization or suzerained city states (like cahokia mounds). Just always be considering that. Realistically, growth is always desirable. So not letting yourself get in the position of inadequate housing makes the point moot. When you inevitably find yourself in that position (cuz you have to prioritize something else over builders, for instance), thats when this comes into play. Of course, early game trading excess resources/diplo-favor to be able to buy granaries when you need to focus on settler and other production-this helps a lot too.
I love this type of videos. I started with Civ 1 and spend a decent time in Civ III so bruteforcing myself through the game is a massive rerflex for me. And even in Civ III 15 years ago i had trouble to understand the tile bonuses etc. What i wanna say is, these type of "Civ 6 for absolute idiots" is so important for me. I should realllly really really try to learn more. I do so much stuff at random that you pros decide sophistically about.
Hey, thanks for doing this tutorial. This is SO helpful for those of us who don't yet have an intuitive understanding of the game. Would love to see more of these!
I know this is an old video and this comment is unlikely to be seen but these tips makes late game Civ on the Switch so much bearable! Waiting for turns to end being twice as long as the turn itself was no fun. And being able to see how I compare to other civs is game changing.
I find the best tip in civ 6 is to only research a tech or civic half way and start researching a new one because if you meet the eureka requirement (tech) or the boost for the civic it gives it to you automatically and you may have half the next one researched already by doing so. :)
I played Civ 5 for years, but had to stop when I got rid of the computer, now I just got Civ 6 2 days ago and have been playing it again but its quite a bit different than I remember 5 being so this helped me lots! Thank you!
I remember when Civ 6 was released, we had to manually configure the .ini file to remove unit autocycling. Feels so worthwhile knowing the quality of life changes are in the options list now. Thank for this video Potato.
On Immortal level, spies keep me in the game. Getting that first promotion is key...normally gain sources, followed by the unrest mission. Then its party time...as you say, a gold rush and then following its promotions. I usually change cities every 3-4 missions before they get caught.
In EU4 in the mid to late game, it's fairly common for a battle to start without you realizing it's happening. Sometimes you just get a message that you lost a battle and wonder, what battle? So the attack animations prevent that at least.
It's "smaller" tips like these I actually appreciate the most. I don't mind learning the big parts of the game slowly and by trial and error, but when it comes to small things that, when done right, make the experience way more streamline/easy/enjoyable/efficient, I'm all for them. So thanks, Potato!
You blew my mind with that first tip. I haven't seen any of your video but when I saw a thumbnail in my recommendations my jaw dropped on the floor and I clicked ASAP. Why that ribbon isn't visible automatically? I was playing like stupid until now. I was playing smiling because I thought I was doing great job and then losing not knowing what just happen. You changed my whole life, man! I mean... as long as I'm still periodically interested in this game. (I still consider Civilization IV as the best one)
1:50 holy shit this can be fixed? This has been my biggest problem with the game since I bought it in launch and I am so blessed to have seen that you can disable that.
You should do an early settler rush to create a lot of settlements, then rush campus buildings and upgrades. It works for me, and I play as Japan(i really like the meiji adjacency bonuses).
Great video, thanks for the tips! Besides teaching me about managing food production, I got a better understanding of amenities and housing food growth bonuses! Gotta keep up that +3 amenities (20% growth) and 2+ housing to maximise food production for rapid population growth in the early game, I guess!
Thanks Potatoe. Due to this and many other videos of yours I can call myself now TWO TIME Champion and ruler of the world (well... some part of it). Officially won the Civ G8 Event last night!
2:00 OH MY GOD, I can still remember when I realized there was an option to turn this feature off. I recall it switching to some unforeseen unit all the time, which I promptly sent in the wrong direction. I got intensely annoyed. Turning this off was probably really healthy for my heart xD
it survived a long time against a massive congonese army, which for whatever reason decided to ignore the crossbowman until it suddenly killed it after like 20-30 turns
There was a huge greek army, the crossbowman fighted them bravely, the army was completely ingnoring him during a couple of tens of turns, until he was killed. I suggested placing down the pin as a memorial.
You knew Greece was going to be a problem! I like to change the game settings to domination only on deity and see if I can beat them before a certain era. The key to beating deity on all victory types is knowing exactly how an OP AI behaves and how to attack them at the right time.
Great gameplay mechanics explanations on things like the food/housing link. Would love to see more short videos like that explaining different aspects of rules/gameplay, and how to use them effectively and efficiently.

Wish there was a way to automate tile assignment across your empire for situations where it is obviously wasted food etc. Doesn't help that I've seen the same tile work bug (6:35) so much that sometimes ive had to manually assign most of the city's tiles.
For me it's not just food management lol, I cannot stand ever letting the governor manage anything, I always have to make sure I manually assign every single citizen in all my cities to make sure the correct tiles are being worked.
Perhaps one of the most useful Civ VI videos I have seen yet. Many thanks for sharing! I will be starting up a new game later on and will keep all of this in mind.
HUD stands for Heads Up Display. I like it especially in the early game to keep a eye on the military size of my neighbors to see if they are going to DOW me/attack me soon. I kinda like seeing barbs getting whacked upside the head as they are so damn annoying now.

@@bigfudge2031 In two scenarios this info is useful: The first being when there's a good defensive city spot without freshwater in early game, which you want to force grow to a size 4 or 7 so the city can throw down another district. Secondly if there's some marsh late game you're only just getting round to clearing, and you want to know if it's good micro to buy a sewer beforehand when food-chopping, or if that's unnecessary.

Spies are real game changers, not just in deity vs AI but in multiplayer too: 1) Most people will build their early cities with high adjacency bonuses in mind, which can often leave space between the districts, making them harder to defend 2) People tend to hone in on victory conditions much earlier, potentially from the start of the game. 3) Surprisingly, spies are underutilized. Usually people will have one, maybe 2 floating around just because they know they can be useful, but very few will use them to cap. If you're going all in on them people may respond too late to do anything about it. 4) Especially in online speeds, taking your units/army to attack someone else can be impractical, especially if they're on the other side of the world. Spies can slow them down in a manner that is actually practical. 5) gaining 2 points of diplomatic visibility when declaring a war. Even more important if you're playing mongolia. Spies are highly underrated. It's a shame the promotions are random early into the game, being able to get a quartermaster, polygraph, Seduction spy to base at home would be so good.
I think the information about the leaders (strenght, science and all that) should be related to the visibility the player has on them. Trade routes, alliances, spies and so on.
So just because i've never seen anyone bring it up...and i kinda accidentally learned it... (this may be something literally everyone knows and that's why its not talked about...i just recently started watching Civ videos) Did you know you can "loan" money to other civs? If you offer them a bunch of money up front you can get much more money back over 30 turns.
@@gabri-immortale you just trade a big sum of money say 100 gold for like ..4 gold over 30 turns and the later you go in the game the bigger the sums can be...you can actually use it as a strategy to kill loyalty too... because you can give them the huge lump sum then use a spy to take it back. I was just fooling around to see if it would work and...the computer will accept the deal every time. And late in game when you are offering thousands up front you start to get some big totals over 30 turns.
@@RickFoxChicken Exactly. If the strategic resources are tuned well, they should serve the role of making unit production strategic choices as well -- instead of spamming as many military units as possible, and thus making the gameplay potentially more diverse. As is, no human player is ever short of strategic resources and as long as there is AI civs, players would be dumbfounded to not trade those infinite resources off to AI civs. (The same can ofc be said of several other things. e.g. spy vs gold.) Except that enslaves human players into permanently watching for strategic resource overflows and busying trading surpluses off to AI as if Civ 6 was some resource management focused RTS game. In light of all that, not having a functioning trading AI is just a total blunder.
I knew about all of these other than the next action key binding-- so glad I dropped by to check this out!! I can't believe it never occurred to me to do this. Gonna open Civ right now before I forget haha
I really appreciate these types of vids. I've been playing civ since the beginning on 5 1/4 floppy lol. I just fire the new civ up and play. I'd never find these things on my own lol
So after WAY too many hours playing this game (my wife was pregnant at the time), the biggest things for me are: being OK with not getting in to your civilizations expertise until you have a solid foundation and army built. This is especially important in diety and immortal because before turn 1 even starts, that closest war mongering AI has a massive advantage and is coming for you. Also, the item you mentioned about specializing your cities - even just having +1 production or +1 culture, etc. early on can make a big difference in the long run because of how little is happening at the beginning of the game. Last but not least, spread your envoys early on unless you're beelining suzerain status because those +1's make a big difference and will set you up to compete with the AI who has a massive advantage at the higher levels.
I didn't know about the HUD ribbon thing - definitely something I'll turn on ! I'll keep in mind the other UI tips too. Re housing - damn, getting that city at 19/13 must have required some agressive farm building and deleting after enough pop was reached 😂 but yeah, put your citizens away from extra food tiles when housing limit is getting reached. I usually don't make spies at all - I'll try to start making them and getting some sweet gold from my opponents !
Thank you!
0:00 every time he says "Heeeeeeey" I feel like he is about to say "Vsauce here"
No no no. "Heeeeeeeey, Vsauce, ...... here." And fill in the blank with Kevin/Micheal/other_guy.
I addicted civ6 for months, once i saw the ribbons in your video i thought you use the mod but you told in that video about how to enable it. It helps me a lot to improve my game. THANKS!
I remember when Civ 6 was released, we had to manually configure the .ini file to remove unit autocycling. Feels so worthwhile knowing the quality of life changes are in the options list now.
Thank for this video Potato.
08:00 "Little tip" - that's a flipping game changer - never thought that the penalty can actually become more than the production of food. Wow!
Face it, Potato, i dont think people will ever stop asking about the ribbon xD
On Immortal level, spies keep me in the game. Getting that first promotion is key...normally gain sources, followed by the unrest mission. Then its party time...as you say, a gold rush and then following its promotions. I usually change cities every 3-4 missions before they get caught.
I am one of those who asked about the ribbons, I even joined your discord just to ask about it.
literally looked for the mod for this for like half an hour yesterday lol
I’m one of those people who go through every single setting the second I buy I a game. I’ve had the ribbons since I started playing lol
Why didn't you try just asking Google instead?
To be fair, they've only added it in their latest update, if I remember correctly, so it wasn't always there
OMG. had no idea you could turn off that damn auto-cycle function!!!!! this is not a game-changer, this is a life-changer, good sir!!!!
The food and housing tip is actually amazing. I'll use it more often in the mid-late game
Honestly, there’s a lot of the UI that I’m still discovering. We get so use to playing civ a certain way that some feature will be over looked
1:50 holy shit this can be fixed?
This has been my biggest problem with the game since I bought it in launch and I am so blessed to have seen that you can disable that.
This makes me want to play for 6 hours and it's already 10 pm, damn
How do you get that ribbon on the top of your screen
I'm so ass in this game the AI is always like light years ahead of me. 😔
Same man
what difficulty level are you playing man
@@azmrhaq7336 prince
You should do an early settler rush to create a lot of settlements, then rush campus buildings and upgrades. It works for me, and I play as Japan(i really like the meiji adjacency bonuses).
@@jeaneljaylamputi2215 Campus buildings really? I always skip those entirely, what good do they even do?
200 hours of casual play and I finally get the answer I was seeking in the first minute. Thank you so much!!!
Great video, thanks for the tips! Besides teaching me about managing food production, I got a better understanding of amenities and housing food growth bonuses! Gotta keep up that +3 amenities (20% growth) and 2+ housing to maximise food production for rapid population growth in the early game, I guess!
Awesome stuff
Thanks Potatoe. Due to this and many other videos of yours I can call myself now TWO TIME Champion and ruler of the world (well... some part of it). Officially won the Civ G8 Event last night!
WOW, WOW, WOW - so many great tips here that make the experience so much better, most of them hiding in plain sight!!
2:00 OH MY GOD, I can still remember when I realized there was an option to turn this feature off. I recall it switching to some unforeseen unit all the time, which I promptly sent in the wrong direction. I got intensely annoyed. Turning this off was probably really healthy for my heart xD
Why the "Here Lays Crossbow" pin? what kind of national hero died there? xD
it survived a long time against a massive congonese army, which for whatever reason decided to ignore the crossbowman until it suddenly killed it after like 20-30 turns
There was a huge greek army, the crossbowman fighted them bravely, the army was completely ingnoring him during a couple of tens of turns, until he was killed. I suggested placing down the pin as a memorial.
'Nam Flashbacks Intensify l
You knew Greece was going to be a problem! I like to change the game settings to domination only on deity and see if I can beat them before a certain era. The key to beating deity on all victory types is knowing exactly how an OP AI behaves and how to attack them at the right time.
I actually love the day/night lighting, it hugely helps with headeaches when I play during the night.
So I'd encourage leaving it on :)
Great gameplay mechanics explanations on things like the food/housing link. Would love to see more short videos like that explaining different aspects of rules/gameplay, and how to use them effectively and efficiently.
Holy shit, the auto unit cycling tip alone is a headache reducer. Thank you!
Here I am playing this on the Switch being amazed at all the menus, HUD info, and game speed.
I love your channel. Have never commented but after watching the Deity single city challenge i feel i must. You are awesome and thank you for all you do.
Thank you for the Quick Combat/Movement tip, I was getting so tiered of spending most of my time in game waiting on the enemy turns.
Making me feel weird for always checking out all the settings when installing a new game or coming back to one i havent touched in a long time. People please, check out the settings when you get a new game..
I've been looking for guides all afternoon to help me understand this game better, and this is the easiest to listen to, and understand i've found so far. thank you
Thanks. I'm thinking about showing this to my cousin that's about to buy civ 6
buy now wits on sale for 14 bucks
alien isolation on sale 2 bucks
It is free on epic games now
I have over 600 hours in this game.
That toggle though, for the ribbon. No clue. You're a legend!
I have the ribbon on and I don’t see the difference between having it on and not. Does it look different on the PS4 or something?
@@jmwngu1358 make sure you've encountered other cultures or players first - The ribbon shows you their turn income in gold religion culture and science
@@DarklordofBarovia I’ve met people but the ribbon never shows at the top of the screen, I open a thing on the side and it shows up there. I just don’t know how to see what they have.
It's so odd being taught Civ VI improvement by Dara O' Briain.
Yes. I knew the voice sounded like someone I’ve heard before.
I always set my day-night time to dusk so that I get the gorgeous dwindling sunrays glimmering on my rivers and lakes.
people are still going to ask about the ribbons 😂 you’re going to need a hotkey for a link to this video 😂😂
Unit cycling is helpful as someone who just started playing Civ but I can definitely see myself turning it off after getting more comfortable.
You're blowing my mind right now and I have 814 hrs logged on this game lol
all these tips were very useful. I always wondered about the stats of all the leaders showing on the screen. thanks for answering it.
Omg, thanks for the “next action” tip, Potato! I already had unit cycling, “wait,” and End Turn configured to my mouse’s extra buttons. But I somehow missed that command option and have been wanting it for a LONG time.
Civ 6’s keyboard commands are paltry compared to Civ 5. But this little optimization will make things more enjoyable for me. 😊
YES!! I started playing recently and it's so much information that it becomes overwhelming. But at the same time, even though I figured out a bit of management alone, it ends up feeling like the game is just clicky-click if I don't learn how to deal with it. But most tips are.... Overwhelming. This was a great list for me! I'm subscribing you! :)
Ugh the food production micromanagement is so annoying, i cannot be bothered to manage it most of the time.
8:09 This should really be an option in the game to automate.
I so glad to find Civ 6 explanator in 2020. Lots of guides is obsolete
+1 The food tip is a massive boost to my game
You are fantastic my good man. Straight to the point. Never had to hear your life story. Brilliant 👏 👏 👏
I actually like the unit cycler becuase I'm too lazy to keep clicking next unit
hats off to my favourite civ 6 player! informative, funny, and takes true enjoyment in the very mechanics of strategy!
I bind "next action" and "fortify" to the side buttons on my mouse
I found this comment on 6th January 2021 and my life got better.
OMG - that auto cycling is freaking game changer my dude , that was literally like 90% of my frustration towards the game hahahah
how do you get that ribbon up top?
Checked out this video purely because I saw the yield ribbon in the shot. I can't believe I didn't know this was available without a mod. Thanks!
Civ6 is the source of 100% of my self esteem
HUD stands for Heads Up Display.
I like it especially in the early game to keep a eye on the military size of my neighbors to see if they are going to DOW me/attack me soon.
I kinda like seeing barbs getting whacked upside the head as they are so damn annoying now.
i love ceasarsaladtown and would like to live there
I just commented on one of your videos asking about how to get that ribbon information up on the top right part of your screen for all the other civilizations to see what they're outputting so please ignore that I am so sorry thank you for making this video I'm a new player and such an idiot but thank you for this that's helped me out at ton.
Do 'food chops' gained from harvesting resources with a builder get reduced by the housing modifier?
why would you "chop" for food if you don't have enough housing to support it?
the answer is irrelevant because you shouldn't be doing it anyway.
@@bigfudge2031 In two scenarios this info is useful:
The first being when there's a good defensive city spot without freshwater in early game, which you want to force grow to a size 4 or 7 so the city can throw down another district.
It would be useful to know if you can force grow cities above the pop limit efficiently, or if you get a 50% penalty.
Secondly if there's some marsh late game you're only just getting round to clearing, and you want to know if it's good micro to buy a sewer beforehand when food-chopping, or if that's unnecessary.
@@bigfudge2031 City could be a few turns away from finishing an aqueduct or neighbourhood that would accommodate the pop gain. That's not true that the answer is irrelevant - it's a good question.

Thank you sooo much for this...i am new to civilization and this type of little things puzzles me and can spend lot of time figure them out.
Also last time i played a rts was back in the aoe2 era...(original aoe haha)...since then i moved to stealth games and hack and slash and i'm coming back rusty after probably a decade of not playing rts so these tutorials are greatly appreciated
I knew all 7 things in this video. I feel neither up nor down about this. Good Video Potato.
Spies are real game changers, not just in deity vs AI but in multiplayer too:
1) Most people will build their early cities with high adjacency bonuses in mind, which can often leave space between the districts, making them harder to defend
2) People tend to hone in on victory conditions much earlier, potentially from the start of the game.
TL;DR
"You should always steal gold"
Oh I didn't know that about the surplus food management thing. That's really useful to know, thanks for this!
Every 10 minutes on your streams? "How you do score ribbons" lol you finally made the video about it your poor tater
Finnally i found explanation about the upper enemies productions, and some other amazing tips. Thanks man
Hey @PotatoMcWhiskey ! Just curious, which civ game is your favourite?
whichever is the latest one -1
I love how for 30 seconds he explained why gold is useful. Very informative
I couldnt see the *Thingy* in Interface :(
I think the information about the leaders (strenght, science and all that) should be related to the visibility the player has on them.
How?
@@gabri-immortale you just trade a big sum of money say 100 gold for like ..4 gold over 30 turns and the later you go in the game the bigger the sums can be...you can actually use it as a strategy to kill loyalty too... because you can give them the huge lump sum then use a spy to take it back. I was just fooling around to see if it would work and...the computer will accept the deal every time. And late in game when you are offering thousands up front you start to get some big totals over 30 turns.
The trading system is problematic for many more things than the simple lump sum to 30 turn money exchange.
@@ecpgieicg agreed, I've found trading resources is a huge blunder. Just simple deals dont work, they just reload the original deal offered.
Oh my gosh thank you! That auto unit thing was driving me insane!
"I saw that Pericles was going to be a big problem because of his cultural output, so I went to war with him and took all of his cities"

I knew about all of these other than the next action key binding-- so glad I dropped by to check this out!!
I can't believe it never occurred to me to do this. Gonna open Civ right now before I forget haha
I'm playing on console so I can't get ribbons 😭😭
I am on PC and I dont have it either...
I really appreciate these types of vids. I've been playing civ since the beginning on 5 1/4 floppy lol. I just fire the new civ up and play. I'd never find these things on my own lol
Seriously some of this stuff i would have never thought of and its completely genius
tha auto unti cycling omg you just saved my computer's life, i swear i was gonna throw it next time it moved it the camera away
(I'm currently playing my first Deity-level game, with default settings (6 players) except random map. It's 1816 AD and I'm still not sure I'm winning this ! And also, newcomer in this channel.)
