Somehow, leopard seals manage to be both really adorable and absolutely terrifying at the same time.
Because they are cute, graceful, curious, etc; but they are also fierce and intelligent predators that dwarf most people in comparison
They got a cute face, but as soon as they look with their black eyes, and open their mouths, to like 90 degrees open, you start to see why they’re apex predators in their environment.
yeah maybe it's their teeth
That's every woman I know fam!

Actually orcas and sharks prey on them.

@@kerontucker4488 I'm sure an orca would take off with a human about 1000 feet and eat them if they were that hungry. Orcas are more dangerous than a majority of the sharks people fear. Great Whites fall prey to Orcas all the time. Orcas hunt like oceanic wolves. 🐺

It doesn't need to, they can just rip you in half.
The leopard seal in "Happy Feet" was terrifying.
always though those were scary since i watched it as a kid
Check out the movie Eight Below. That was the first time I'd heard of one.
Well that’s bc you identified with the humanized penguin that was all of a couple feet and was illustrated accordingly. So if you’re only a couple feet tall that 13 foot animal now looks 40 feet. And that’s a terrifying freaking monster
I remember watching that all the time as a kid those were scary
Same with the one in 8 below
it would probably kill me because I would try to hug it after the first 5 minutes....
it's super cute i don't blame you
Wouldn't we all what to

She seemed playful but I’d be betting she was deciding if she was food or not
Exactly. That thing was not cute.

Hats off to this extraordinary woman for what she does. Diving in Antarctica and with Leopard Seals? Nothing short of amazing in my book.

It's absolute badassery.

Leopard seals can be very deadly . it might look cute but some of them are very agressive so , you dont want to mess with 'em .
It's called a Leopard Seal - not a puppy seal.

But can you blame her tho?
that seal was not aggressive at all lol, if it was the lady would have scars or even be dead. the seal was merely curious
This is why I love this video. Not for just the amazing footage but because the Leopard Seal does something completely unexpected.
Leopard Seals have the reputation of being territorial and pose a threat to divers. This seal could have easily tried to attack the diver but she didn't. The diver kept her guard up, as you should when encountering any wild animal, but this seal showed her a behavior that is not filmed that often.
It shows you that an animal with a scary reputation can be calm and playful when it feels safe and secure. You just got to give them a chance to show it.
She was just curious. Dont think she sees humen everdyay.
sorry but that's not true.
Abe Sammy no they don't. If they did, the research camps in Antarctica would be surrounded by leopard seals because that is where all the humans are.

How many people have been killed by leopard seals?
@@bproducer The death of marine biologist (Kristy Brown) in Antarctica is thought to be the first human fatality caused by a leopard seal. There are a few records of adult leopard seals attacking humans.
Always carry a knife. Im not one who would want to kill a leopard seal or even a shark, but I will if my life is in danger and a knife is actually a very very effective weapon against both.
@@GreyBlackWolf if a shark really wants to attack you it’ll attack you before you know about it, you’ll never have time to pull out a knife underwater. What's really interesting me about these leopard seals is their body shape, length of neck and jaw and type of dentition, shape of the head and placement of eyes. They are quite different from other seals. I think their overall body features, including their flippers, suggest to us what ancient marine mammals like primitive whales and marine dinosaurs might have looked like. The head and eye placement and the size of the mouth actually reminds me a little of the thylocene, or Tasmanian tiger. These leopard seals are really interesting, and what is even more curious is that they are obviously so social and yet they live solitary lives. I think that these divers may seem like pups to female leopard seals.
Thanks for that visual ur right

Please don't coin the term Biology to allow you to win an argument, very few animals have been proven sentient
fiendin281
Ah, I can see you're one of those "I fucking love science.." documentary jockey types, we have scientifically recognised few species as sentient, I am not using my definition, I am using the biologists definition, please keep to facts rather than speculation, this isn't a thesis and you arn't supporting it like one
fiendin281
Okay, I'm not sure as to the intent of your comments, are you trying to prove in a comments section on youtube that this animal is self aware simply because humans in the past and still in the present do not know every fact about the universe?
Sentient, Noun, is used to refer to ones abilities to perceive the surroudnings and it's interaction with ones self, i.e. feeling pain when cutting yourself.
Sentient, Adjective, is used to refer to the consciousness and self awareness, if an animal is not self aware, it cannot be placed in the category known as Sentient.
I have tried to make this as transparent for you as possible but by simply googling sentience you could have seen that there are pages on its philosophical and scientific meaning or if you are really interested in the topic please feel free to read some journals on the topic but don't post your personal theories as if they were fact in an attempt to educate someone unless you are going to clearly mark them as something you have come up with.
The reason I posted mine without such a disclaimer is these animals have not been identified as sentient in terms of their ability to be self aware, I am going off the facts of today in a world where facts come and go, if/when my comment is no longer true fair enough, but until then, unless you personally have finished your research and just haven't got around to publishing it fair enough, otherwise you are assuming your results before having collected data in which case someone probably needs to check them for repeatability, of course, there is the possibility you arn't a scientist....

As if the ocean wasn't scary enough with Sharks and Orca whales in it!
Voracious T what are "orca whales"?
killer whales , like free wily
Voracious T No, you either call them Orcas, or Killer Whales, there is no such thing as an Orca whale, as Orcas are not whales, but instead Dolphins, very large dolphins. The nickname Killer Whale has done nothing but make people think that Orcas are whales.
goldenhedgehog9 the nickname "Killer Whale" comes from the original name Whale Killer, since fishermen pods of Orcas literally ripping whales to shreds and eating them. Yes, they are big enough to do that.
Its like with Adder snakes. They were originally called Nadders but when people verbally said "I saw a Nadder" or something like that the other person thought they were saying "an Adder." The nickname just changes over time.
goldenhedgehog9 well... Technically dolphins are part of the whale family. No matter how you put it, in the end orcas are whales
Having "seal" in its name does not make it adorable..

In Southern California (north of Laguna Beach area) I had a female sea lion grab my fin and pull me back about 5 feet. I immediately turned to be face to face with her, I screamed, she screamed and I thought I might have crapped my pants. I looked around and there was probably about 10 females swimming around me. Pretty amazing and frightening at the same time.

Y U No play with seal? Seal just want play! U hurt seals feelings!
*crying seal meme comes up*
Rookie Freediver that seal could have ripped her hand off, so touching it wouldn't have been the safest thing to do.
Robbie They also are not allowed to actually touch the animals in Antarctica due to regulations, which has lead to some frustrated leopard seals as the divers can't take the dead penguins that the seal brings them. There is a video somewhere on RUclips where a leopard seal catches a penguin and brings it to a diver (still alive), and lets it go right in front of the diver, which it then swims away and bolts towards the shore to get out of the water. The seal just looked at the diver with a confused look as it watched the penguin swim away. The seal then decided to catch the diver another penguin, but wounds it first so that it can't swim as fast, but as the seal lets the penguin go in front of the diver, it swims away and the seal gets the confused look on it's face yet again. The seal then proceeds to catch and kill penguins to give to the diver, but since the diver can not accept the gift, it just starts to sink. Every time the penguin sinks so far down (below the diver's flippers) the seal would retrieve it and attempt to give it to the diver again. Each time the diver doesn't take the penguin the seal's look of confusion begins to turn into frustration until the seal just decides to carry the penguin with it, most likely with the plan to not let go of the penguin again until the diver reaches for it.
