Voracious T No, you either call them Orcas, or Killer Whales, there is no such thing as an Orca whale, as Orcas are not whales, but instead Dolphins, very large dolphins. The nickname Killer Whale has done nothing but make people think that Orcas are whales.
goldenhedgehog9 the nickname "Killer Whale" comes from the original name Whale Killer, since fishermen pods of Orcas literally ripping whales to shreds and eating them. Yes, they are big enough to do that. Its like with Adder snakes. They were originally called Nadders but when people verbally said "I saw a Nadder" or something like that the other person thought they were saying "an Adder." The nickname just changes over time.
There was a video doc made where a leopard seal brought a diver chunks of penguin to eat. I think in the diving suits we kind of look like some sort of dorky seal haha
People say animals are not aware. But they care for there young and save there brothers and sisters. Some animals have life long partners. You have wolf packs and lone wolf's, who do you think survives longest? It's time people unite with other people and nature. Evolution of humankind is happening right now. Ignore those who want to grap on to the quick and easy. Love you all my fellow humans
We always think of seals as being this sweet creature that is always balancing a ball on its nose, but they're different in the wild as opposed to captivity.
The title is misleading. The leopard seal can be deadly if it needs to, but this was not the case. Using such a title on a National Geographic youtube clip... Shame on you, NG, you don't need to use those schemes to pull people over. I would gladly come to see it, if the title was something like: "Wonderful encounter! Diver meets a 13-foot leopard seal."
In Southern California (north of Laguna Beach area) I had a female sea lion grab my fin and pull me back about 5 feet. I immediately turned to be face to face with her, I screamed, she screamed and I thought I might have crapped my pants. I looked around and there was probably about 10 females swimming around me. Pretty amazing and frightening at the same time.
That's pretty scary, being that close to a leopard seal. Despite how cute playful and inquisitive leopard seals may be. It seemed like she was opening her mouth in some sort of play display.
Its great you have the nerve to dive and capture this footage because I could never will myself to do it. Almost thrown into a pile of sea urchin while snorkeling.. so much unknown down there and Ill leave it to you to discover! Terrified of the ocean and what lurks beneath!!
Cute ? Have you look at that situation with a critical eye ? Your underwater in the end of the world and a huge predator comes literaly out of the blue. Its not like on land, where you can run, or breath naturaly..that must be terrifying. Maybe Cute once you realize your not his dinner.
Wow! I have heard that leopard seals can be extremely dangerous. I think I would have been quite nervous. I have never done cold water diving. I have been diving in tropical waters for over 25 years. I have seen some pretty large sharks. I do not like when people get over confident around them or feed them. This makes them associate divers with food and can lead to a bad situation.

Each time the diver doesn't take the penguin the seal's look of confusion begins to turn into frustration until the seal just decides to carry the penguin with it, most likely with the plan to not let go of the penguin again until the diver reaches for it.
goldenhedgehog9 That is adorable and sad at the same time
No thanks
All people: "No, no. They aren't aggressive. They are just curious and playful."
All wild animals: "How are you eaten?"
Luckily the only wild non-human animal that will actually actively hunt humans as a source of food are polar bears . . . On the polar opposite side of the world 😅
@@luckytri9716 Leopard seals have also killed humans.
@@dimitristsekeris1821 I am aware. So have many other animals, carnivore or otherwise. Regardless, polar bears are the only non-human animal that will actively hunt humans as a source of food.
@@luckytri9716 now when you say non-human animal, makes me curious what human animals are.....
@@dougbenson8975 Humans are animals; it's a bit morbid but I am referencing cannibals ( . . . I'm a criminologist so . . . 😯🤷♀️)
Just an incredible experience! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Just WOW I will add what a magnificent and beautiful creature.
*Stereotypes: you can't be cute af and deadly at the same time -_-*
*Leopard seals: **_(underwater wheeze) try me bish_*
Someone should make a meme of that.
Absolutely stunning. We take soooooooo much for granted.
As if the ocean wasn't scary enough with Sharks and Orca whales in it!
Voracious T what are "orca whales"?
killer whales , like free wily
Voracious T No, you either call them Orcas, or Killer Whales, there is no such thing as an Orca whale, as Orcas are not whales, but instead Dolphins, very large dolphins. The nickname Killer Whale has done nothing but make people think that Orcas are whales.
goldenhedgehog9 the nickname "Killer Whale" comes from the original name Whale Killer, since fishermen pods of Orcas literally ripping whales to shreds and eating them. Yes, they are big enough to do that.
Its like with Adder snakes. They were originally called Nadders but when people verbally said "I saw a Nadder" or something like that the other person thought they were saying "an Adder." The nickname just changes over time.
goldenhedgehog9 well... Technically dolphins are part of the whale family. No matter how you put it, in the end orcas are whales
Will forever be the best leapord seal footage ever caught though
if its a male, i believe the situtation would be entirely different.
A Tem how so?
The question how well fed was it before the encounter.
Did u just assume it's gender ?
Aquaman we already know it's a female seal in the video....
Aquaman they said in the video that it was a female seal.
There was a video doc made where a leopard seal brought a diver chunks of penguin to eat. I think in the diving suits we kind of look like some sort of dorky seal haha
Cute, adorable and terifying at the same time...love this creature.
it so cuteeeeeeee I'm crying when it kept spinning
That thing had some fangs.
Those teeth were very sharp. You are a very lucky person to be able to do that to experience that. Thanks for sharing
This comment went like four different directions
I'd be scared out of my mind if I ever saw something like that that close to me .especially with those jaws .. :o
We always think of seals as being this sweet creature that is always balancing a ball on its nose, but they're different in the wild as opposed to captivity.
Absolutely fantastic, thank you for the video ❤️
I'd NEVER go back into the ocean again after that ençounter.
One of the moments where you become jesus and just sprint back to te boat
So cute! I love how s/he looks at the camera and open her mouth wide ❤ 2:14
The title is misleading. The leopard seal can be deadly if it needs to, but this was not the case. Using such a title on a National Geographic youtube clip... Shame on you, NG, you don't need to use those schemes to pull people over. I would gladly come to see it, if the title was something like:
"Wonderful encounter! Diver meets a 13-foot leopard seal."
Vegans and crossfitters approve this video
Declan McCartney ?
I approve this as well
live in a place with no vegetables, they're the ultimate predators
Same thing
Why crossfitters????
Amazing footage and story.
Congratulations on your film. Most people would panic in that situation.
Wow, that must have been scary but an awesome experience.
Wow that's quite an experience that most people will never witness personally. My kinda Lady and the leopard seal is an amazingly beautiful mammal!!
Diving single cylinder in the arctic - brave, I give you that
That's pretty scary, being that close to a leopard seal.
Despite how cute playful and inquisitive leopard seals may be. It seemed like she was opening her mouth in some sort of play display.
Merci beaucoup pour ton message
This video is so incredible. What a lovely and beautiful experience.
The leapard seal is like she's in love with who l am.
You met the 1 nice seal...you got lucky.
Its great you have the nerve to dive and capture this footage because I could never will myself to do it. Almost thrown into a pile of sea urchin while snorkeling.. so much unknown down there and Ill leave it to you to discover! Terrified of the ocean and what lurks beneath!!
I've seen similar behavior in a seal study. The seals were in captivity, wth mirrors which they really were looking themselves over.
Leopard seals seldom attack humans. And even if they do, it's seldom fatal.
statistically children seldomly get kidnapped... does it change anything?... not really, it's still scary.
Agree. :-)
That's only because humans seldom go swimming in Antarctic waters, duh.
Seldomly swimming and i seldom cant breath for seldom air! Help me i am seldomly drowning.....seldomly.
MosSadistic I wish jackasses seldom appeared.
Unreal creature 😱 like someone said beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Great job with the dive footage.
This thing looks so cute ^-^
Those things kill people
What an amazing video!👏👏👏
I went looking for a Lepard Seal video. I was not disappointed!
Oh man, yeah, that was really dangerous, even when it starting doing barrel roles, I never knew barrel roles were dangerous.
Humans have to be extra cautious, the seal could be put down if it dare touches the human with its tail!
+My username is so obnoxiously long and there is absolutely nothing you can do about the matter lol
Dany Boy well crocodiles bites his preys and start rolling to tear appart the meat.
Rolls, rolls...
Seals are dangerous, yes, but I would be more concerned with the animals hunting them (i.e. sharks and orcas).
@Talin Rawlinson yeah only because humans dont go out of there way to try and swim with orcas.
you guys are always amazing doing this expeditions, this female leopard seal was so graceful, nice job ,i dream to see one physically in my life time some time soon
Honestly, I was expecting the seal to have 13 feet. This is clickbait.
🤣
Such beautiful creatures, I hope they are protected! :-)
Why
There’s something so terrifying with the Seal just casually showing you it’s teeth like “You know I could kill you, right?” I truly believe that people with camera’s are immortal in the moment…
A lot of people have died while using cameras....
The title should be “Encounter with a wild sea doggo chonker”
