She was excited she had made a friend of some sort. I cant imagine how lonely some creatures get in the wild. its crazy that she chased off another seal. How terrifying to know another giant seal is behind you and it could be over any moment. Love it!
Be careful about imposing human emotion onto animals. Animals that have a heavy focus on social behaviors (such as cows, wolfs, humans ect.) can probably feel loneliness. However a leopard seal who primarily spends their life alone probably does not have the same social drives and thus feelings that others do.

The facial structures of leopard seals are naturally uncanny, their jaws open very widely, and sometimes they can appear as if they're 'smirking' from certain angles, which adds to their menacing appearance. She's as intimidating as Apex predators come, but she's far from ugly.

The threat display didn't get any reaction out of him, so he must not be a competitor. He's just floating there staring at her. So, the last remaining option is that he must be some sort of helpless infant that doesn't know how to feed himself. I mean, just look how skinny he is!
Simple: Leopard Seals are WILD animals, they are not your next door neighbor who can lend you some sugar when needed. You don't go out and play with a hyena, right? That doesn't mean that Hyenas are "evil" they are just wild animals who need to eat as horrible as it is when they tear apart their prey.

You can’t make elaborate inferences based on a _single_ encounter with _one particular animal._ Frankly, the more I read about cetacean and marine mammal cognition, the less certain I am about any explanation that depends on _sharing_ a similar feeling, thought or intention. I’m not sure science has the power to do that yet. They might as well be aliens. Like the idea that it thought the reflection was a pup-there are a lot of assumptions here! How do you know how a solitary animal like the leopard seal would react if it encountered a leopard seal pup that isn’t hers? Do you know? Has this behavior been documented before in leopard seals? Do you see the problem? Has anyone ever considered that maybe...we should just say, I don’t know, and leave it at that until more evidence is found to support all those assumptions? We don’t know why this happened. And that’s all there is to it.

Yeah I read it's quite nasty, there's an autobiography of the early south pole explorers who tried it. Even dying of starvation they couldn't stand to eat penguin. I can't remember the name of the book or exploration group.

Yeah I read it's quite nasty, there's an autobiography of the early south pole explorers who tried it. Even dying of starvation they couldn't stand to eat penguin. I can't remember the name of the book or exploration group.

I never get tired of listening to Paul's stories about his adventures. He has such passion and a great sense of humor. I pray he goes far, and that God blessed all his endeavors! We all need awareness of creatures living on the ice. Too bad, there are TOO many selfish idiots, who are too caught up with violence, crime, drugs, and idiocy. They will never get humanity.
I pity the penguins. Lol, they get killed repeatedly to feed a guy who is not interested in eating penguins.
Mom's. Doesn't matter what species they are all the same. They get mad if you don't finish what's on your plate or they won't stop trying to feed you.
I know this is an old comment but could go either way, males are a fair amount smaller then the females, so she might have thought he was a real small male.

I really love these stories. A creature of one specie helping a creature of another specie. It kinda reminds me of a documentary I once watched about a female cheetah (I think) taking care of young gazelles lost from their herds.
