It’s been a while since good footage of hooded seals has been recorded. Amazing animals with the males sporting a unique feature! Reminds me of frigatebirds and their inflatable throat pouch.
Nature and Animals are never boring to watch whats going on, but this was unexpecting ! Imagine the diver who filmed underwater🥶👍and the crew on the Ice.🎬
It is mostly drones and underwater mini toy subs with cameras attached that catch these great pics and videos , most of the time it's not a person but a machine , you really think a diver can sit it those waters for hours just to get few seconds to minutes of good video 😏
They don’t, that’s what they are killing each other constantly. Even domestic animals like cats kill other cats when mating. The female can kill the male cat after doing it.
Do the inflatable nose and flap under the nostril in any way relate to their ability to hold their breath underwater? Evolutionarily speaking, do they serve any purpose, which makes these features, in particular, so important for impressing potential mates?
It may be completely useless or even bad. Oftentimes, sexual selection degenerates as evolution goes on. To understand why, I recommend you look into Goodhart's law. I'll sum it up for you. It's about tests. Basically, when a new test turns out to be very good, it will first become more popular (take for example those big standardised exams to get into university) but what happens next is that the test becomes bad again. Why? Well, as the test becomes more and more popular, more people become aware of it and they start focusing their studying and training on the test itself instead of preparing for whatever skill the test was testing. The same happens in nature, there's some of it in every species. We can use these seals as an example. Imagine the first time some female elephant seal randomly became attracted to males with a deep voice. That's a new and successful test! Deep voice = big male = strong male = stronger offspring. (Female mammals NEED to be selective because they have limited and costly chances to reproduce, if they mate without being picky, their pups might not be strong enough and the mother's genes will die forever.) So okay, generations go on and females with that taste have an offspring that simply survives better, it's good, it spreads, it becomes popular. But now, how did the test degenerate? Welp males developed the big nose to add depth to the noise they can produce, and it attracts females selecting for that trait just as good as being bigger. Males became good at the test, the test is now bad. The balloon nostril may be useless in a similar fashion. But maybe it's also a way to show health with that nice red colour. Remember, even obsolete tests may retain some sort of good core.
@@RightWitit that's just uselessness with extra steps lol You're merely shifting the uselessness of the trait to the uselessness of the method of selection the females are adopting - and calling that useful. The question remains: why do females want their future offspring to inherit that seemingly useless trait?
When he inflated his nostril, I felt for him cuz he was putting it all out there. And he could tell she wasn't going for it but he summoned the courage to try anyway. 😂
You’ve gotta respect those male seals- out there with boldness and courage, not knowing what the answer will be, but doing it anyway. Making the sea a better place, I say 🙌🏼
Why even try after that. Jesus female seals are picky. He just pulled a heart shaped balloon out of his nose and she was like ”how dare you". Just give up and rub it.
Male dromedary camels also have a similar looking part of them that comes out of their mouth, called a dulla, if I'm not mistaken, which is appealing to a prospective mate.

I think it's just intersexual selection. It could possibly be a negative thing for males (as it is with male peacocks) but I don't know for sure :)

My all time favorite Narrator of all time ❤
