  • "A dream of a dream," was a breathtaking score about why the man we've been rooting for is a heartless wretch, and good god I loved it. Yabushige's story comes to an end, Omi climbs the ranks, as does Anjin John, but man oh man did I want a battle.

    Omi was Toranaga's mole. In the first episode when he asks Yabu about informing Toranaga abt the Erasmus, Yabu replies that Toranaga is trapped in Osaka so "why tell a dead man the future?". It's not a coincidence that Toranaga says the same words to Yabu before seconding him in the last episode. Yabu smiling back is him recognizing Toranaga's plan.

      100% he told Omi this... but in the video I highlight that his Kosho is standing directly behind them, listening to that conversation! I really think it's him!

      I agree it was likely Omi. Amy had many female channels by which he could’ve communicated with Toronaga without arousing suspicion. Perhaps he was less of a direct spy, but instead just kept his ultimate Lord informed so as not to betray him and to win his favor

    Fuji scattering the ashes of her father and son on that bay is actually, perhaps, the MOST special scene in the WHOLE series ….
    Trivia: the bay where they shot Ajiro is in British Columbia, Canada.
    That’s the area where James Clavell raised his family. Michaela Clavell, James Clavell’s daughter and Executor of his literary Estate, remembers spending so much time in that bay.
    That’s the actual bay where they scattered the ashes of James Clavell. The production surprised Michaela Clavell by inviting her, her sister and her niece to the shooting of the last 2 episodes where’s they had Fuji scattering the ashes.
    That Fuji scene was an homage to James Clavell.
    Michaela, her sister and niece were all teary eyed and touched by the gesture of the production …

      @@HaxDogma With the massive success of the series there is a 100% chance of future Shōgun seasons - no way Disney will leave that kind of money on the table. If the creators are saying something different, it is to negotiate better deals. The last episode set things up to continue with the actual events, they can just cut and paste from the history books. Plus they’ll have the budget to do the Battle of Sekigahara and siege of Osaka castle correctly.

    Remember, this version was expressly designed to be more authentic from the Japanese perspective than the original book or previous adaptation. If you understand the concepts of _omote_ and _ura_ , and _in_ and _yo_ , within Japanese martial arts and culture overall, then it is natural to embrace Crimson Sky for the sublime strategic victory it was and episode 10 as a perfect end to the series.

    • @HaxDogma
      @HaxDogma  2 месяца назад

      Respectfully, (sincerely) I don't believe I need to know either of those things to embrace the strategic victory. I believe I went into detail about why they went with this direction and the pros of it. I just wanted a battle, or a visually stunning end that I could lose my mind over. Something that in five years, whenever we are trying to remember how everything ended, we can go... what an incredible ending! They had the emotional side down, I wanted to see it balanced with seeing the true weight of the lives Toranaga plays with.

      @@HaxDogma - You made excellent points throughout your video. There are simply nuances included thoughtfully for the Japanese audience, interwoven throughout the episodes, a lot of it non-verbal, that are not obvious or relevant to most members of the western audience. Sanada Hiro knew the Japanese audience would come with microscopes and magnifying glasses and rightfully so.

    • @darksnow07
      @darksnow07 2 месяца назад +2

      As a Japanese, it does indeed represent our more demure way of doing things. Fully agree with the original comment and appreciate that Sanada san pushed for this retelling from a Japanese lens.
      The genius in not having that epic battle speaks to Toranaga’s vision for a united, peaceful era for Japan under his rule as Shogun. One can argue whether he wanted it all this time, but what is more clear is that it was his destiny.

    • @24X7CARZ
      @24X7CARZ 2 месяца назад

      @@darksnow07 - I appreciate you making time to share your thoughts. To be fair to western viewers, no one has made a video that meaningfully explains these nuances - and perhaps like so much of what falls within the ura and inner heart of _any_ culture, first-hand experience is required. I hope this adaptation of _Shogun_ spurs that interest in such experiences in the west - whereas the 1980 _Shogun_ enamored the west with the omote face of Japan as a stepping stone to help make this next step possible, thanks to the new adaptation, going forward.

    My heart sank at the thought of a second season. I pictured a Game of Thrones fiasco where a cadre of new 'fans' began to dictate the show, and spectacle and action became the priority over good writing, subtlety and characterisation.
    FX' Shōgun is a masterpiece of storytelling. The plot unfolding slowly and gracefully via superb acting where a character often conveyed their thoughts and intentions through subtle facial expressions alone. People used to spoon-fed exposition thanks to lcd Hollywood felt cheated out of a Sekigahara grand battle finale, when the series was about setting up the complex chess board as opposed to showing the game. The real battles and combat of Shōgun was fought in the hearts and minds of the participants and what was not said nor shown was as important as what was. The empty space around it defining the object as much as the object itself. Let these ten episodes stand. Let them remain untainted by an inevitable decline in quality as usually happens to series that get popular. Let it remain a perfect subtle jewel in television and a template for future writers, actors and production staff in how to create a masterpiece.

    Tremendous, masterful show. At every level, truly. I so very much love all the performances; love the characters and the layers upon layers of meaning this show contains. I too would have liked an epic battle full of the various character moments, deaths, etc....And yet I remain in awe of the boldness in their restraint in this finale. It did feel a bit disjointed, like maybe it would have benefited from an extra 15min of connective tissue to help bridge some things. Especially if its the series finale. I would love to explore more in a second season but it does feel like that risks cheapening such an incredible story. After all, "a flower is only a flower because it falls."

    I remember watching this with my dad in the late 90s when I was like maybe 12, not too young, but still a kid. I was entranced by the way they made it feel like I was in Japan! I had never seen anything like it before. It was the 1st time I had seen anyone portraying Japan in that timeframe outside of anime. This remake was as close as you can get to a frame by frame remake as you can get with 50 years of technological and film advancements, not to mention budget lol. As good as the original was, this was 10x better! But seriously, they covered at least 90% of the scenes from the original, and the script was very similar, but updated and made to fit modern storytelling. The remake does however cut out some scenes that can be passed off as unnecessary, but really do flesh out some of the relationships/tie up loose ends or questions. Also some characters were added to the remake to add depth, like Omi never existing in the 1980 miniseries. it would end bad if FX decides to continue the story on their own for more seasons(money) and I think(hope) this is just a limited series.

    It’s worth noting that when the taiko’s heir is a teenager and wants to rule, Toranaga considers him a threat to his own power. He forces Lady Ochiba and the Heir to commit seppuku. He uses them to gain power and then kills them off so that they can’t threaten his power.

  • @sorelvio79
    @sorelvio79 2 месяца назад +1

    I think there's context for the torturing of villagers outside of testing Anjin. Toranaga took control of the Izu islands via Omi and used this event as a pretext for purging all possible loyalists to Yabu and Ishido. Throughout the show, he had shown a remarkable ability to use an important event for multiple purposes in order to maintain appearances. Even though he most definitely didn't care for the peasants more than their economic value, he wasn't a guy to enjoy in gratuitous violence (eg in history he outlawed boiling people). He was brutal when needed to be to prove a point, but he was restrained compared with Taiko before him.

    The Splint for the tree would've been removed once it was strong enough to hold itself up, otherwise the tree would likely grow around it, which is not what you want. They're temporary supports while it's growing, not a permanent thing. So years later, once the branches can support themselves, there's no reason for the splint. I'm not sure if that is supposed to be the analogy as well but hey that's why the splint isn't shown, it wouldn't make any sense

    • @HaxDogma
      @HaxDogma  2 месяца назад

      Yeah but years don't go by, right? Between Episode 1-8. They created the perfect way to show the audience how Toranaga's influence affects this child, and then never brought it back into the picture to highlight if it was a positive influence or not. Imagine seeing the splint broken in the finale, and we would know intimately that he did not have that child's best interests in his third heart!

  • @alesh2275
    @alesh2275 2 месяца назад +2

    Toranaga isn’t looking out for the Taikō’s heir, as the Taikō intended.
    In fact, historically, Tokugawa would kill the heir 15 years later, when the heir wanted to get back the power he thought he was owed being the the heir to the Taikō.
    You’re right that Toranaga is just a cold, calculated, selfish man.
    He was after his own power, and while he won’t kill the heir as long as the heir isn’t a threat to him, Toranaga also wouldn’t empower the heir over himself.

    Looking back at the first episode, it's surprising to see so many of Chekhov's guns being planted. Suicide, of course, but also the 'wind,' who is the 'barbarian' (the show spares nothing in making the Europeans dirty, smelly and generally disgusting), and that the crew of the Erasmus, Blackthorne included, was intent on plundering this 'dark land' (Japan).
    It backfires in a way, though. With no relatable main character, it becomes more an intellectual exercise than an emotional journey.
    Consequently, I feel no desire whatsoever to have anything more to do with the smotheringly joyless, death-obsessed Japan so presented.

      I just posted recently with the same theory. It struck me earlier today that Toronaga probably planned to have his own son start the war so he could have plausible deniability, yet set his own plans into motion. Of course the thoughts the OP makes sense as well. Perhaps Toronaga is more of a master of seeing things around him occurring and shifting his plans as opportunities present themselves. Or perhaps a bit of both. One thing is for sure. He got a lot of people willingly killed to further his plan.

    I don't as well agree that the series was set up to end on action.
