    I love this version of Shogun. The production was serious with bringing Japanese actors who are not well known in the West. I’ve been studying how to wear kimono for several years and the costumes are exquisite.

      The production team definitely deserves praise. I was researching it after tonight’s episode and recently found out the filming of the show was delayed because they thought the production wasn’t ambitious enough.
      That combined with the fact that Hiroyuki Sanada (Toranaga) is a producer explains why the production is so brilliant!

      @@dontworrydonwearing a kimono is an art form in itself. At a minimum, it consists for 5 layers and 12 or more parts. There are no buttons or zippers to hold it together. Just ties. They don’t cut the length or width of the robes either. It’s a series of folds to get it to fit in the most aesthetically pleasing way. Kimono dressers do years of training. This isn’t a cosplay costume you DIY from YT. It’s masterful work.

    You should check out the original miniseries. The producers asked James Clavell to write the script. 3 days later, they received a copy of the paperback in the mail. Clavell had torn out all the pages that were not from Blackthorne's point of view. That is what they used as a shooting script. It allowed the audience to discover and learn as Blackthorne did.

    • @BadTakeRisan
      @BadTakeRisan  2 месяца назад +3

      Thanks for the info , that’s such a cool story. TBH , I think one of the weaknesses of the original miniseries is the lack of perspective from the Japanese side.
      A major part of the story in Shogun doesn’t even really include Blackthorne and in the grand scheme of things, he somewhat irrelevant. The Japanese perspective is very much so needed in this story.

    For context, the war with Korea caused this period of social upheaval in 1600s Japan as the Japanese defeat at the hands of the Koreans during the Imjin War decimated many Japanese armies and completely decimated and crippled the Japanese Navy, hence their reversion as an isolationist state during the period. This war against Korea also caused the previous leader, Toyotomi Hideyoshi to go insane and later die. Americans don't realize, Shogun is their history in a way.. Think about it if Japan modernize then, Meji Restoration would not have happen, that led to Pearl Habor.. In alternative history, Japan might have been colonized by the Portugal at this time of what 1600's.. If so, eventually, they would have modernized and all of Asian history in WW 2, might have been different.. An early modernization of Japan, would have led to modernations of China, for sure.. Instead of China catching up to the world in 2000's, they would have already been 400 years earlier.. Whole world history may have changed.. Imagine a Japan knowing of the Europe news, and then the news of American civil war.. These War like people, would keep up with repeating guns, machine guns, biological weapons, airplanes, carriers n etc.. They would just keep pace with West or surpass it.. But now that Japan is modernized and their Abe leader died, who knows what is Japan future now ? Will it go back to Shogun ? If America financially collapses, it is likely..

      I had great hopes for the remake, but they skipped very very important scenes and changed other important scenes for no reason and it makes what happens nonsensical. The rushed events also make it very confusing, with no time to understand the characters, their motivations and why everything happens in the story. The line that holds the plot in the book and the original adaptation is his desire to get his ship and crewmates back, while being torn between the need to survive in a foreign land and his love for Mariko, which this new show misses by a few miles. I do like the actors that play Yabu and Toranaga though. The rest just seem blurry caricatures, typologies, rather than real people. Buntaro's scenes in the book and og adaptation were few, but established him as a character, while in the new, they make him a hero, cutting away the possibility for one of the greatest scene this character could have, the tea ritual. The way this show is going, it seems that more and more errors will appear and it's strange that Clavell's daughter, who is part of the production crew, didn't care at all. Missed opportunity, such a shame, the sets and the costumes are quite impressive...
