Heartaches by the Number - Danny Gatton

  • OK - this is the last one I have from this concert of the late great Danny Gatton. It is an old simple country tune, but Gatton plays it like an incredible guitar clinic and shows how to take a black and white tune and turn it into a rainbow of flowing technicolor! I encourage all you Gatton guitar fans who have similar footage buried in your closet to get it out and share it like I've done. Danny Gatton playing and memory must live on. Enjoy

Rolling Stone Magazine places Danny 63rd out of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Danny could play circles around all 62...even if they all played at the same time.

John Boda, thank you so much for posting this. I just wish I could have been there. This is a classic in every sense of Telecaster playing. The tune is an excellent platform for Danny's exploration of the fretboard. The steel style runs are so accurate and true to a pedal steel. Truly inventive playing... a real classic. Note the look of sheer gratitude in the lead singer's eyes at 1:43 - 1:44, as Danny hauls out the heavy artillery. He's like, "there's the sh*t...what the audience really paid for..." He was so grateful to have Danny Gatton at that gig with him. Danny Gatton was just outrageously good. I remember seeing him live so many times at the "Club Soda" in D.C. One of the few players who could just plaster wicked smiles on my face, time and time again. I got a little bit of that just now, watching this video. Most welcome and pleasant shocks of familiarity. I remember!

"The lead singer" is long time Gatton buddy Billy Windsor, also deceased. 80's era DC people would recognize Billy from The Act Four playing with "The Reasons".

He did play a long time with Roger Miller so he did know how to rein it in. One of my favorites of his live playing is Crosscut Saw. Any thing he did was great...wish he was still around,,,same for Roy Buchanan, Jimi, Stevie, Howard Roberts, Wes, Freddie King, etc, etc,
