- I went to see these guys at the cellar Door 3 times once with Buddy Spicher setting in on the fiddle haven't been the same since. I still have my autographed Red album.Legend has it that their agents used this tape to book their act. After Danny passed I ask Buddy about this tape he said he had heard about but had never seen it ,so I made him a copy and gave it to him. Check out the other Danny Gatton videos on our channel. Please subscribe. Thanks Jimmy Hodge
These are some of the scariest guys I've ever heard. Completely off the charts. I'm so glad we had Danny and Buddy for as long as we did. Two wonderful players. Marc T.
They were at the top of their talent
@@marctrainor5595 both of them at the same time is amazing their talent comes along every hundred years or more when musicians dedicate their life to this kind of excellence praise them and enjoy their talents while they are with us such a gift is rare
danny was just different than everybody else.
never to be duplicated.
his vocabulary and improvisation was unequaled.
one of the very few "what the fuck did i just hear" guitar players.
You got that rite my friend…..Tom
The tone of this pedal steel is unbelievable.
It is, he makes it sing and squeal and thump....and then plays some of the best melodic lines I have ever heard. Genius.
What was the device Buddy sat on the bridge and kept culped in his right palm?
@@tommcdonald1746 Some people were saying it was an MRX 90 or something. I am not a pedal steel person. Search around the comments, they discus Buddy''s effects.
@@tommcdonald1746
An ebow.
Absolutely insane. It’s hard to fathom how anybody could be this good.
One of the best guitar performances of all time.
Oh my....everybody at there best...but Danny and Buddy ? Just unimaginably awesome !
Why did Danny commit suicide? Why did Buddy stop playing pedal steel guitar the last 8 years of his life?
@@thomaspick4123
1.) chronic depression 2.) repetitive motion injury.
I bought the CD of this back in the 90s.... couldn't make it through one listen. This is a lot more fun to watch than listen to.
I had that CD too around the same time, listened to it about 1000 times. 😅
this is really a treasure, thank you. you can tell that cameraman was probably a guitarist by his unflinching focus on the players' hands.
Yeah, I hate it when the camera is on their face while a masterclsss is going on just below.
Cameraman was named Jim Hall in credits. Not sure if it was "that" Jim Hall. But...
Wow! What a treat. I went to school in Charlottesville and was lucky enough to see him several times there and 1x in DC around the time the red record came out. It was crazy, but at a couple of those gigs in the summer, maybe 20 people were there. As a young guitarist, my mind was totally blown. Loved when he had Evan Johns in the band who was a great singer and foil for Danny as well as a fierce player in his own right.
The rockabilly stuff with Evan Johns was just spectacular - Saw them dozens of times at Dannys club in Georgetown. Just remarkable.
"Canadian Sunset" drives me to tears.
epic
This is just another level - beyond human reasoning !
They call Danny Gatton the greatest unknown guitar player, but lately Danny has found a new following, and many of them are (guess who?) also guitarists. Why? Just listen to him play a few tunes. RIP, Mr. Gatton: We are catching on.
I’m not a guitarist can’t play a note but there is something about Danny that just made him tops in my book playing with buddy emmons seems to bring out the best in Danny another one is the recording Danny made in 92 with top jazz cats called New York stories where Danny plays strictly jazz with a country flair it’s one of the best jazz albums ever made listen to it I think you’ll agree it’s great
Also go check out Scotty Anderson who is alive and well and as good as danny or better you decide check out scottys triple stops his octaves tone phrasing you name it Scotty is the best guitarist right now today it’s too bad he does not tour or get the recognition he deserves as he is a world class tele player that can play any genre
Oh yeah I’ve had new york stories for 20 years and it’s still one of my favorites Danny’s playing is nothing short of genius just like everything he did a true master of the telecaster Danny is tops in my book for 20 years now pure greatness on guitar nobody else like him
@@claytongillaspy8847 Scotty a little faster, best technique; but Danny has to many speeds and techniques for Lenny, Scotty, Wes, Django, Johny Smith, Jeff Beck, Bryant, Garland, Farlowe, Bickert, Pass, SRV, JWilliams, Bream and all the rest of them !
@@TheGattonmaster gatton is still my favorite all these years and will be he’s great 👍 but Lenny and Scotty are as good or better in different ways especially Lenny along with some others who are incredible like Rory Gallagher & Roy Buchanan and throw in jr brown & Wes Montgomery joe pass & Johnny smith Jeff beck tommy bolin are all great players tommy tedesco Ravi Shankar andres segovia and frank marino really got it and so many more I’m leaving out right now oh can’t forget Roy Clark and the great glenn Campbell! Who I discovered recently very underated players
thanks for posting the whole thing. absurdly, over the top good and unique
Zoom !!!!
Is this really the whole thing is there no more of this
😅those guys could melt the sun !!
I can't believe it !
Finally in better quality 🙌
Thanks allot Amigo.
Finally after searching and searching, I now can peruse and steal licks from Danny Gatton and Buddy Emmons! Thanks so much!
I remember the first time you showed me this. We were on the road in PA. I think you actually brought a VCR with you and this tape. We were playing at a hotel in Harrisburg near Hersheypark. Still blown away by it.
Thank you so much for sharing this treasure! Just floored by the talent... wow
New subscriber here…! This is sweet stuff my people. ….Tom
This how ya advertise your band!!! Love it and Dannys playing.thank you for this gem
The Swingin' Shepherd Blues quote was perfect. 3:58 on...
Fantastic post. Saw Danny a handful of times around B-more and MD. Was lucky enough to be in the very front for a show at Max's in Fells Point. About 5 feet from the master. Man, oh man!
Have never heard jazz licks played on steel g. Buddy is every bit as good on steel as Danny on guitar or att least very close
Go and listen to anything you can find of him, he's the greatest pedal steel player there ever was.
I've been wanting to see this full set for a while... thank you so much!
I believe mine is the original tape before I let it get passed around as far as I know
WHHHoooaahhh ... Maybe he IS the BEST!!
Astonishingly good.
I think you would have to be a guitar player to totally, completely, understand, comprehend how good Danny really was, and let’s not forget about buddy Emmons here he really really really shines ❤ thank you for posting this!!! ❤
wow.. what a treat this is. talent galore..
Buddy Emmons on all those great country records and all the while he is the HIPPEST jazz player around. Just from another world...
Inside out MAESTRO,, (no kidding ) since we were kids. 54 55 or so With Jimmy Dickens, Bud replaced Walter Haynes,, He hates to be called BUD> Howard Rhoten was Guitar Player, Jr. Huskie Bass ,,, Chubby Wise fiddle kenxqed Sleepy Hollow Ranch
Buddy is my Hero and Danny too! But please don't forget Tom Morrell.. if you haven't heard him play Jazz..try to find the 1972 Studio set with the incredible Case Bros, Johnny and Jerry and includes super Maurice "Reese" Anderson
@@sitarnut I’ll check it out!
TALENT! wonderful!
Love it! Love the red shirts with their names on them
Thank you for posting this!
Wow! Speechless..this is so fantastic. Can you add credits for the bass (a Jaco driven Steve Wolf) and drums. They are killing it. Thank you for sharing this! RIP Danny.
The credits are at the end of the video,Steve wolf on bass and Scott Taylor on drums
@@jimmyandmelchannel9636 also they're literally wearing shirts with their names on them
@@TheMrCompletely 😂😂 well said sir!!!
Imagine Jaco in his band?!? This guy is Awesome, though!
Man that Ode to Billy Joe was just nuts. ….jeeeezus……Tom
Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve never seen it in its entirety before now.
You had to be the best at what you played to play with Buddy emmons
I've heard about this footage for awhile, thank you!
I wonder if Danny every actually realised just how good he was??
In this clip there is enough material to study to cover my entire life.
supreme
OUTSTANDING & INFLUENTIAL ❤️🎶
Thanks for posting!
I'm sure loads of people already know this but among the top guitarists he was known as The Humbler . Not an ounce of arrogance in him either.
BEST GUITAR PLAYING OF ALL TIME; 200% BEAST AND HES NOT EVEN COCKY, JUST LOVES TO PLAY.HES THE TRUE AMERICAN TREASURE GUITARIST NOT LENNY BREAU. LENNYS HARMONICS GREAT BUT GATTON IS AWESOMELY UNBEATABLE, GREATEST SOLOIST EVER; AND IN LATER YEARS BEST SHOWMAN= BEST EVER !!!
Hey Don, Buddy Emmons said Danny was the only player who had blown him off the stage and there wasn’t anything he could do about it! And Buddy had played with Lenny before playing with Danny.
Absolutely killer! Thank you. I wanted more... it would be so awesome to see the whole show. But it probably doesn't exist
You can search around and get bits here and there, pretty much the whole show.
I caught them at The Lone Star in NYC. I went to see Buddy and had no idea who Danny Gatton was. I found out!
He certainly made an impression wherever he played.
Holy shit. THANK YOU
I'm speechless.
It is jaw dropping.
16:30 love the screaming harmonic that spices up this quote
Awesome.. thanks for posting this ;)
magnifico !!!
Most of the other guitar hero's are from another planet...Danny was from another universe.
@maurice19541
He was not ahead of his time he was ahead of ALL time, his fingers travel at the light of speed.
How do you spell great. This video. Thank you.
They call Danny the greatest unknown guitarist. Believe me when i say he is just to jawdroppin to be unknown
woah!
get us t-shirts with our names on em! and make em all a size too small!!!
Indeed :)
5:50 Call the fire department !!!
🤯
Such a loss losing Danny.
This is so terrifying it actuality hurts my feelings. Lol. These guys were cookin
Alot of people dont realize Gatton was so good because he had an extra finger on his right hand.
When people start posting comments online about the greatest pickers I aways refer them to the live Redneck Jazz Explosion....
16:31 Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton, old times there are not forgotten...
Flat-out ridiculous!
How about some for the rhythm section?
shit hot!
Huge loss in losing Danny. I learned quite a bit from his video lessons.
It’s a lil strange seeing him playing a LP and not a Tele. When you’re that good you can play the strings off of ANYTHING.
Danny is the man , what is the song at 6:26 is it isolated anywhere ?????????? I love it
It's Canadian Sunset.
Canadian Sunset was originally from Hugo Winterhalter
Great playing! Can somebody please tell me the name of the song that starts at 6:30?
Cowboy Jazz!
Anybody else I’d think they sped up the film.
What just happened to me?
Rushhhhh
Amazing musicianship! what year was this?
1978?
The ultimate noodlefest
Like they need their names on the shirts...
Made it easier for their parents to find them when they got lost.
Don't try this at home! You can't.
When was this video shot
👍🚂👍🚂👍🚂
Try listening to Les Paul he smokes on the guitar too .
Is steel going through a Leslie?
OBS FMB!!
Zorba the Greek at 1:09 ?
By the way….I know these guys without names on shirts…lol
What year was this?
10:05
Jimmy, do you know when and where this recording was made?
It was recorded at the Cellar Door in Washington DC. Buddy and Danny played together for about 2 years in 78 and 79. To the best of my knowledge.
September 1978 Cellar Door DC
The other 1978 Redneck Jazz Explosion gig new years eve 1978 ; it's on cd and the black and white video runs at least 2 hours.
*******
is that a pedal mounted to the guitar?
That's Gatton's famous and custom "Magic Dingus Box", which wasn't a single effect like a stomp box, but a controller for several pieces of outboard gear (an echoplex, an EQ unit, a Leslie speaker, iirc).
@@jimdixon3470 ok thanks. i guess no one knew except you cause it took a year for someone to answer....lol. thats pretty inventive/innovative for it to be a controller.
MXR made a steel guitar wtf!
Yes and there's no need for the ( WTF )
@@keithclark486who are you to tell people not to say wtf?
Yikes!
#unreproducible
I do not believe he killed himself. Sorry.
Love his playing but those are horrible tones
OMG!
