He makes that look so easy that you almost have to be a steel player to understand how difficult that really is. I had the privelidge of meeting him twice. He took time to explain his whole technique to me. Very nice man. Truly by far the best ever and probably the best that ever will be.
There are certain things on this earth that mother nature forces upon us that you just cannot deny their power, the incomparable Buddy Emmons was one of them, the old saying "Often imitated but never duplicated" has never applied more. RIP, Buddy!
Buddy was beyond belief and so cool. Bobby was my guitar hero. I loved these shows and really miss this. God bless Scotty and thanks for all thw wonderful years of great music. Thanks for posting.
@@danklotz263 Bobby Caldwell from St Louis. He was the staff musician and band leader for the International Steel Guitar Convention until his death. Bobby could burn with the best. I knew him for 40 years.
Just absolutely Amazing. Not only Buddy, but all the musicians. If someone gave this a thumbs down, it is because they did not have the musical knowledge to understand it.
There was a time in the early 70's that I thought I would buy a pedal steel, and master the instrument, then I saw Buddy on a small club tour of Europe, and decided six strings would have to be enough, the guy was a genius, and a really nice man, he'd talk to anyone, and particularly helpful to aspiring pedal steel players. RIP Buddy.
Amazing stuff! Looks like some garage in the 70's early 80's. Whoever is playing elec. guitar is tearing it up too. Just wow! Would have loved to been there. My Dad played with Buddy in the 50's. He's the greatest ever. My Dad called him a freak in a kind way and he was no slouch either.
There's bad-ass Bobby Caldwell sitting behind Buddy. What a guitarist he was! He played with everyone who appeared at Scotty's International Steel Convention.
Here's the source tune. Ya can hear one of Buddy's 'pet licks', the 'acsending tritone arpegiated triads' which btw, he also incorporated in the opening of Kicks To Boot at 1:58 ~> ruclips.net/video/cqG6HqG2JCE/видео.html
I can't believe Smiley Roberts has played on my songs & is a great friend of mine... ..and Im so lucky to have learned so much about Buddy and Steel guitar that I love so much...bGb @thebensonband
His work with Danny..... sometimes when two players of that caliber hook up it might not click due to many different factors.but when mutual respect occurs devine things happen.they had it.
I don't care your level of musicianship. Every steel guitar player, bass player, drummer and guitar player can learn something new from this 6 and a half minute jam.
Are there any steel players today that play single note solos in the way Buddy did? Lots of great steel players but non on my radar that do it quite like this
A true story and a comment about Buddy at the end of the story: Many years ago in England, a noted critic (Name escapes me at the moment) said, "Vladimir Horowitz was the greatest pianist, living or dead!" Whereupon an over zealous reporter took the critic to task as he asked, "Have you heard every pianist?" The critic paused for a moment and then responded, "Perhaps I was not at all inclusive enough when I gave my assessment of Mr Horowitz; because I failed to include those yet unborn!" Now my comments: IF per chance, Buddy Emmons "chosen" instrument had been the piano, THAT "critic" would have had to eat his words! Here is why: Buddy was NOT just a musician who played the steel guitar. NOT at ALL! He was a BORN "Musician" from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head. He was equal or better than ANY great musician who EVER lived. And I add: Those YET unborn!
This gets to idols, deserved..now remember if you spend all your waking hours listening to one you've missed hours you could have spent also listening to Bobby Garrett
@@ray2022 You apparently assume wrongly; that I listen only to one steel player. How foolish a thought. I loved Bobby Garrett and most of the other steel guitar players. But NO one could touch Buddy Emmons.; especially Bobby Garrett, etc He would be the first to say that if he was still alive. Also, I had many "TOP" steel players at two steel guitar conventions in '97 and '98; that I produced; and they ALL played outstandingly. But every single one of them would say that NO one could touch the Big E! So I stand on what I said above.
Yeh Def a superb steel player Def one of the best in his era but the jazz thing does nothing for me as it all started off from Hawaiian lap steel progressing to western swing /country with the help of buddy and show Jackson inventing the levers and pedals for this most complicated of one of the worlds most diverse instruments a big hand to these guys 👏and god bless them 🙏 I've been trying to learn to play this insane instrument for 9 years wth the help and support from the Scottish gartosh psg group club meetings and a big thanks to these golden oldies great bunch of guys
I was blessed to see Buddy with Danny Gatton a few times and damn there is was nothing like then or now! It was like John Coltrane went country and they channeled it...... ;)
The amps were known for clarity -- way before what we have today -- notice the 15" speakers, that adds to the sound -- but go to Robert Randolph and he will tell you something different =)
Peavey gets a bad name for whatever reason but their gear has been on just about every stage where I've seen a live gig. The predators, falcons, and T series of guitars are exceptional at very good prices.

You're no slouch yourself, Eddie Rivers (aka mark malak)! Hope that all is well with you, and Asleep At The Wheel!
google Buddy Emmons... he plays pedal steel on a Album of Lenny Breaus..
that trick at 4:47 was so cool. I've heard that sound before but never realized how it was done.
Hard to listen to …. 😴

I never knew you could even do, what that guy just did on a pedal steel! That’s worth another listen!
RIP Buddy and Danny.
Huge talent packed on that little stage!
They're all SMOKIN'!
That looks like it was filmed at one of Scotty's conventions...

Beyond amazing, and what can you really say after that break at the end ...a total mastery of the instrument. Buddy Emmons !!!
Buddy and Danny gatton were a musical match made in heaven.
Holy Smokes they're burnin.' They bass did the "right" thing by keeping the groove happening and reflected the tune during the solo. Wicked stuff.

Sweet mother of god.
I dont think there will ever be another Buddy.

3:30 The best riff Crazy
The "ending" to end all endings.
Amazing!
incredibly playing
When he’s done pickin, there’s not much left to say! The best there is!
Buddy Emmons.. The best! Thanks marcel.

That was amazing! I'm just learning lap steel and I only hope to get a millionth of a millionth percent of a millionth percent as good as that. Wow!
Trading fours with John Di! Bobby Caldwell was my guitar teacher!
Hands almost seem like they are not even moving at times. Crazy

Wow - he's absolutely on fire.
I can;t even think that fast love it

Amazing! I like the slide twirling!
Emmons just never ran out of tasteful ideas.
Does anyone know who the guitarist is ...?! Equally marvellous....!!
Bobby Caldwell, monster in his own right.
That's also some band!
WOW
Heck, drummers can twirl their sticks. Pedal steel players should be able to spin their tone bars. It's only natural. :-)
Thought you might enjoy this

Wow!!!!
Cowboy Bebop. Me like.
What is that a VFW Hall or something? Who is the guitarist? Mad skills I mean he could do anything with that steel.

rad
For what appears as a fairly loose jam on this version.they push it right through.these guys are pros.Buddy not too bad himself.
