Being a self-employed freelance advertising photographer, let's just say it's a life of feast and famine. To make ends meet I have done more than a few stagehand gigs. I did a ZZ gig a few years ago and as we worked the load out after the show, the band's tour buses were idling in the parking lot. When we finished our work at 4am and closed the doors on the the last semi at the dock, a number of us were standing around BSing, and here comes Billy Gibbons shuffling across the parking lot in a silk smoking jacket (robe) and slippers and wearing that hat. He extends a hand, shaking our hands every one and thanking us for making his job possible. The only time I have ever had that happen, though I have to say that another band of the nicest guys I ever met was Iron Maiden. The same down to earth unpretentiousness. Cheers
My mom was the cleaning lady at a villa Iron Maiden stayed in when they did a gig in the Algarve back in '93. She was absolutely amazed at how nice, polite and clean they were and became a lifelong fan (she was already 45 at the time and obviously grew up listening to Sinatra, Bennett, Aznavour, etc. so metal was definitely not her thing). She best remembers Janick Gers and Nicko being consummate gentlemen and always talked about how clean and beautiful their hair was 😁.

How must you really feel inside, when the most versatile, popular, badass guitar in the world is built and named after you? Every kid who can hold down more than two chords dreams of owning one- every rock legend in the world owns at least one, and there is the man himself. Absolute Respect Mr Paul.
Les is hilarious! A regular comedian. And Billy plays along well . . . Even with their mutual teasing, you can see his respect for the old guy. Great video.
Tony Round -Definitely, Les loved playing with everyone, from any style of music, even if they didn't play the guitar he designed. He was a top notch human being first, and a guitar guy second.

Van Halen holds a patent for a flip-out support device that attaches to the rear of the electric guitar.[48] This device enables the user to play the guitar in a manner similar to the piano by orienting the face of the guitar upward instead of forward.[49][50][51] However, he is not in the Inventors Hall Of Fame. It's so nice to see a man like LesPaul at that age and so cheerful, and well-disposed, genuinely worried and interested in the circumstances of Billy's life. I really cannot understand how came there are such these abnormal types of guys that come a video like this one to put a “dislike” on it. For sure they do not even touch the surface of the depth of vision of a man of this caliber. And frankly, I think these guys probably never played guitar in their little lives!
Les Paul was not only a musical genius... he is the father of modern recording. He was doing multi-track recording before there was even a term for it!
When Les asked him to play one of ZZ’s tunes, Billy being respectful cause there’s a couple of them were inappropriate with his quick thinking, pulled out a good Mississippi blues feel and it was good!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Just a shot in the dark after some Buffet tunes and what an amazing lucky find. Real treat to hear and see a true legend with an amazing second fiddle. Real nice.
Every guitar player wanted to sit beside Les Paul and get teased...it was just a thing Les Paul did. You have to remember Les Paul is trying to put on a show for the audience...kind of a Vaudeville thing...Les was always nice and had everyone laughing...too bad he is gone...
Thank you Les Paul. What a memorable impromptu with BG, ...just love the mutual greatness and humility on stage that day. Nothing wrong with big stage, big amps and big performance, but... Watching great musicians just being themselves performing in intimate setting is worth more then every penny.
This truly is a Musical Phenomenon and carries Pure Professionalism and Unfathomable Blessings from both "Willie" & Les...THANK YOU BOTH AND MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS US ALL WITH MANY MORE YEARS OF YOUR MUSICAL MIRACLES...
He was a creative genius before his time & saw the writing on the wall with masters playing his guitars with certain strings de- tuned to creat new off camber sounds - he was ahead of his time. And guys like Tom Shultz took his ideas to a whole new level. Thank you Les Paul. You guitar BITE is unsurpassed.
Love " Willie Gibson" and Mr Paul joking and playing and telling stories. Just bought tickets for ZZ Top, I hope, coming to my region, Portland Oregon in October 2020. THANKS for your great work.
I keep coming back to this clip like to an old house by the river with all its aire ... sometimes just to hear Billy Gibbons talk that talk .. and so I never found any ZZT creation get to my soul . when he cradles those slow rhythm and muddy notes I am spellbound in heaven 🌹
I was too young when Les Paul was at his peak. I realize I missed out on some of the most talented performers ever. Les and his Wife were way ahead of their time.
Man I love watching these old guitar players. They always have stories and just know how to make everyone in the crowd feel like they’re part of the show.
That farmer had no idea what he was helping to create. Crazy to think about how if 1 thing in time was changed like if Willie was on his way to that farmer to buy that Les Paul and his car got a flat tire and the farmer ended up selling the guitar to another guy then everything that was created by ZZ Top might not of existed. Any number of things could of changed the course of fate for the bearded boys that day and we wouldn't of had the great music by one of the best bands in the world. You know I call that farmer and Willie's interaction and exchange of money for that Les Paul guitar? I call that gate my friends.
Actually it was a Gibson Melody Maker that was the turning point in the history of rock & roll. Young Billy G. got it for Christmas when he was about 5 ir 6 years old. 💪 🇺🇸
Made me think of so many of the guys who laid down the foundations of what we've come to call rock and roll. James Burton and JJ Cale came back to me, and then there's Les Paul and the incredible contribution he made throughout his astonishing career. And then there's Billy and the guys, who for me have driven the techniques and the sounds that set new standards for the guitar band through the 80s and 90s. A great pleasure to see this and be made to think that it was all, in the end, just smart guys working hard and playing guitar.
You have to remember, Les was born in 1915....some of these guys he was playing with we regard as legends....but Les had no idea who they are. He wasn't familiar with them or their music because he came up in a different time. The cool thing is, you can tell he has a genuine interest in who are they, where they are from, when did they start playing, how many guys in the band....and he wants to hear them play his creation. Notice he tried several time to get Billy to cut loose....and The Reverend, always the gentleman, wanted to keep it about Les and not himself. ZZ Top has been together and touring for 50 years....let that sink in. Truly one of the greatest American rock bands in history. Great to see two legends get together before Les passed.
I know I have seen before, but it's so AWESOME too see Les Paul joking around with Billy Gibbons. they should have done many more these little get togethers with Les Paul. and all the outstanding musicians before the great Les Paul left us.
I'm always in awe when I think about The Legend of Les Paul. The guitar proficiency, the curiosity that led to the creation of the signature guitar. Uhhh...multitrack recording! And that Willy Gibbons guy is pretty cool too.
I always enjoy the Reverend Billy Gibbons claiming he barely plays. Then bends a guitar to his will. Doing it with Les Paul is a good day. TEXAS born and bred.
I played next to him every day for a decade! Kept a poster of him in the studio because it never felt right to have no god looking over my shoulder during practice, believe me it works.

@@pippipster6767 I almost felt bad for Homeless dude -- BUT - Les is being honest, he's an old guy that doesn't know Billy Gibbons from a hole in the wall. Yes, he embarrassed him, don't think it was meant that way.
He got in a bad car accident with Mary Ford who slid on some snow or something while she was driving and the car went down an embankment and his arm got all messed up. He couldn't bend it properly after that so he had to have it set in a certain position. He told the doctor the way he wanted to have it set so he could still play the guitar. Tough and classy guy. Didn't give up.
What I see LP was a brilliant interviewer. He in a funny way pulls the best out of his guest. Believe it LP knows exactly who ZZ is and every star that uses his equipment. RIP and Thank You
Doogie,Don Douglas The B Sides of Classic Rock Thank you said that perfectly. Our world gets worse everyday every year because we lose people like them it's a shame can't remember my exact age early 50s but enjoy our history more than the times I'm living in.
I am sure that you are correct. Some people seem to be thinking that Les Paul was just a partially out of it senior citizen at the time this occurred and that he had no idea whom he was speaking with. I am virtually sure he knew who Gibbons was. He is asking very good questions that draw Mr. Gibbons out and give him an opportunity to reveal interesting facts to his owns fans. And I think Gibbon probably appreciated such a personalized interview. Also, Les Paul did not challenge him on his statement "I wrote a thing called 'How High the Moon.' It was covered by a guy who invented a guitar or something... " other than to say "You did...?" I am not sure what Gibbons was getting at with that statement but he obviously was not the composer of the classic that Les Paul highlighted on television in 1951 (Gibbons was two years old at the time). Both of them are music legends and it was amazing to see them interacting together like that.
Les Paul was a LEGEND, an icon, a gentleman. Without Les Paul, the man who's invention of the electric guitar made Rock and Roll possible, you'd never know who Jimmy Hendrix was. Les Paul transformed music as much as Mozart did!
Wait a minute, didn't Hendrix play a Strat? Me thinks you're completely wrong!! AND, Fender produced the second mass produced, commercially available electric guitar in 1950 (Telecaster), the Les Paul wasn't available until 1952!!! So sorry, I'm sure we would still have Hendrix and Page and all the rest!!! Les Paul was responsible for inventing multi-track recording, not the electric guitar!
@@timsmith9169 - Paul may have made a solid body electric, not first, but "second" (by and for himself by 1941), but Fender made, as I stated before, the second mass produced, commercially available electric (solid body) guitar in 1950! Paul's was NOT available until 1952, so that places his in a solid third place! AND, my comment was in response to Scott Tucker's original post, stating that without Les Paul, we would simply not have rock music or any of the great guitar players that came along!! I totally disagree. As for the *first* "solid body" electric guitar, the winner would have to go to Rickenbacker and Beauchamp for their 1931/32 A-22 lap steel guitar!! But hey, who's really interested in actual history anyway?
It’s so special what these two music GIANTS has given the world in their lifetimes. Yes, Les is responsible for the Les Paul guitar which is considered the pinnacle of electric guitars. The 1959 standard is the rarest and most valuable Les Pauls often exceeding a half million dollars. Billy’s Les Paul (Pearly Gates) is a 1959 that he paid only $200 back in the day and it’s practically priceless today. I got to meet ZZ Top backstage in Dallas at the old CocaCola StarPlex amphitheater while AeroSmith was playing on stage. It was so cool to shake the hands of Billy, Dusty and Frank. They autographed a book I have The Beauty of the Burst on the page that shows Pearly Gates and Billy wrote with his sharpie pen a scripted PG next to the full page photo of Pearly Gates. That book was always special to me but since meeting the guys it’s something I’ll cherish forever. They also signed my old original Tres Hombres vinyl album and yeah, that’s kinda special to me now as well. I also have a signed copy of Les Pauls book “In his own words” it’s a non numbered artist proof that Les signed. I would love to have met Les and would loved to seen him play back in his heyday. God Bless you Les and thank you for everything you’ve done even if it only was to give hope to someone and inspire them to keep playing guitar.

How must you really feel inside, when the most versatile, popular, badass guitar in the world is built and named after you?
Every kid who can hold down more than two chords dreams of owning one- every rock legend in the world owns at least one, and there is the man himself.
Absolute Respect Mr Paul.
Music doesn't get any better than this. Two great players putting it down low and slow. This was a treat.
Les is hilarious! A regular comedian. And Billy plays along well . . . Even with their mutual teasing, you can see his respect for the old guy. Great video.

Why are people bemoaning LP he's having fun with billy and billy is loving it, lighten up folks, Sad day when LP left this earth.

yes...be cool......enjoy the moment......
Tony Round -Definitely, Les loved playing with everyone, from any style of music, even if they didn't play the guitar he designed. He was a top notch human being first, and a guitar guy second.
Thin skinned people. Who cares. Good friends fuck with each other. I´d let him kick me in the balls just to let him bust my balls.
We work our a.... off as rule to survive a lot of folks don't have the money or time to stop working to enjoy life take a break so to speak I know no one cares but this is nice. Some other good videos similar to this
Genius is always a delight to watch ......
It helps us to accept our simple skills .......
Watching these guys just makes me smile from ear to ear .....
Happy Days all the way ..............
Les Paul is the only person who is in both the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and the Inventors Hall of Fame.
Les Paul represents the quintessential American Creative Genius! He is an example of what made America great.
Begg to differ. Eddie Van Halen
Van Halen holds a patent for a flip-out support device that attaches to the rear of the electric guitar.[48] This device enables the user to play the guitar in a manner similar to the piano by orienting the face of the guitar upward instead of forward.[49][50][51]
However, he is not in the Inventors Hall Of Fame.

Shows you how screwed up they are. Tom Sholz should be in both as well.
@@RalphPaglia1 Shows you what I know, hell, I thought Trump is what made America great!! 🤷🏻♂️😂
Guitar World Magazine interviewed Les at this session, & now I'm seeing it for the 1st time!
Love both guitars they're playing, but especially Les's!
Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top showing respect! Great jamming with Les Paul!
Billy's big fat bass notes really set the groove for Les. Fantastic slow blues phrasing by Billy too. Les' blues tone so sweet.
João Simões not to many people understands art/talent
Could you imagine what music would sound like today if it wasn't for this man?
I don't think I want to imagine that. LOL
Les Paul was not only a musical genius... he is the father of modern recording. He was doing multi-track recording before there was even a term for it!
Ies Paul is the best
But a quick to ego degrade. Dont tramp my flower. He' not that great and old stuff.

What are you on about?
Can you speak english please?
Awesome!
@@lisaweaver986 He was a great musician! Y B A FOOLISH person!
When Les asked him to play one of ZZ’s tunes, Billy being respectful cause there’s a couple of them were inappropriate with his quick thinking, pulled out a good Mississippi blues feel and it was good!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Only a couple? lol
I was blessed to see Les Paul at the Iridium in NYC. What a great show!
Gotta love this humor and jam session with Les Paul and Willie of ZZ Top fame, Brilliant. Sweet Blue Notes flowing.
Love this type of music- just stumbled as well, & pure gold!
The playfulness of Les Paul was classic Gibbons delivered a incredibly respect response, this was awesome to watch!!
This sort of understated playing is a gift from God. I love it. Miss Les.
I was too young when Les Paul was at his peak. I realize I missed out on some of the most talented performers ever. Les and his Wife were way ahead of their time.
Such soulful, subtle, bluesy playing Billy is doing here - Wow ! TY - rip LP.
Man I love watching these old guitar players. They always have stories and just know how to make everyone in the crowd feel like they’re part of the show.
Les Paul, Doc Willy, Lou Pa and Paul Nowinski... If only I could have been there. Sweet! Thanks Mr Lentz for providing this.
Billy Gibbons is the coolest dude on earth and there won't ever be another like him.
A legend bustin the balls of another legend. Love it.
Farmer had a Les Paul guitar sold it to Billy for 200.00 and the rest is history WOW.
To think ZZ top might not be here if it wasn't for a farmer Texas

That is an amazing sample of history. Simply amazing.
I've met Billy G. twice quite by accident...he's a down to earth easy to talk to feller
I honestly want to cry with how awesome this was
Just fantastic...and they're great and funny in this lil game of roles they made...and they're playing great music...what a taste👍👍👍🎸🎸🎸❤️❤️❤️
beautiful...thank you for this gr8 rendition of the most beautiful riffs. Off the cuff and so hot! RIP Mr. Paul! Thanks Billy!
It was a real pleasure to listen to you 2 greats jamming and bantering.
Les holding court and Billy kissed the ring with so much class. This one goes in the time capsule.
love this!
Love your comments.ditto
My father loved Les Paul...Dad would be 120 plus now!
Saw ZZ Top as the opener for Ten Years After, in downtown Oklahoma City, around 1972. Just a new little group from Texas that rocked the house.
The greatest music comes from the greatest state.
Billy Gibbons and Les Paul... Don't get any better than that :D
Couldn't have said it better mane
*Willy Gibson
The rev. He showed so much respect to les in how he played. Not a word said. Amazing
One of the best moments ever...the great Les Paul with Billy G of ZZ. Les Paul is hilarious...who knew he was so funny.
"Hey, Les Paul called, and he wants to play with you."
"Not interested." Said no one ever.
I played next to him every day for a decade! Kept a poster of him in the studio because it never felt right to have no god looking over my shoulder during practice, believe me it works.
I also write lyrics and someday I hope to get them published
@@quantumsith442 yes you always have to have a guy looking over your shoulder it Comforts The Heart and it gives a thought of mine the feeling the song speaks out more clearly

Love you Billy Frank and dusty I cruised in my ford escort in the 80s pumping your music ❤
Some very funny dialogue! Two brilliant musicians and Lou also. He knows all the chords...
Plus three. Lou is amazing. He plays the bass line, and melody, in chords, on every beat.
Fantastic stuff! So appreciate Les inviting Willie up for a session. God bless Les. Love you man ...and still playing the 1961 Les Paul SG.
Billy Gibbons was such a class act in this.

Such a nice guy
@@pippipster6767 I almost felt bad for Homeless dude -- BUT - Les is being honest, he's an old guy that doesn't know Billy Gibbons from a hole in the wall. Yes, he embarrassed him, don't think it was meant that way.
@Christopher Ross I say, BULLSHIT. Les knows many artists true, but he did not know nor understand the ragamuffin playing w/ him.
Nothing to say just listen
They say it all if you just listen
THIS IS GREAT STUFF!! I've never seen it before,, but the reverence and respect Billy has for Les and how personable Les is at his age is fantastic!
Billy is a pro at steering away from awkward questions LOL. And he does it in a very respectful way, almost without noticing. Love that guy.
What an honor to have the privilege to see this.. Thank you
Let’s be clear boys, ZZ Top knows to respect the older music generation, zz won’t let many people talk like that to him. The respect is real
ZZ Top is the name the band Billy Gibbons is in; his name is *not* ZZ Top!
@@JDines By the way, which one's Pink?
I know what you're saying and it's very true
Don't forget that Jethro Tull guy.
You gotta have a sense of humor. Besides this is stuff I would ask if I had the chance.
Les had arthritis in is knuckles and still played...that's how dedicated he was to music.thank you Les for inventing the electric guitar to the world
he didnt invent the electric guitar...but he did amazing things.
I remember to see ZZ Top open up for the kinks in the late 60s or early 70s. They gave a great show.
Most fun EVER watching a video. Two heroes and ambassadors of music.
Les and Billy two legends together. Awesome 👍
One of the most valuable clips on RUclips, thanks for sharing.
@@apocalypserailroad9047 Les Paul made the first solid body electric guitar. Plus sound on sound I am lucky enough to still have my 1958 Les Paul Jr .
A look back is even more AWESOME, Thank You.
